00:48Hello and welcome to From the South. I'm Alejandra Garcia from Telesur Studios in Havana, Cuba.
01:03We begin with the news.
01:21Leo XIV has been elected as the 267th Pope of the Catholic Church after two days of conclave in the Vatican City.
01:28It's Cardinal Robert Prevost, born in Chicago, United States, who has become the first Pope of that nationality.
01:35Prevost is 69 years old and has spent 40 years as a missionary in Peru, the country where he became a bishop.
01:43In his speech from the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica, Leo XIV mentioned the Synodal Church,
01:50a concept promoted by Francis and very controversial with the more conservative camp.
01:56Dearest brothers and sisters,
02:06this is the first greeting of the risen Christ,
02:11the Good Shepherd,
02:14who gave his life for the flock of God.
02:17I too would like this greeting of peace to enter your hearts
02:24and reach your families,
02:26all peoples,
02:29wherever they may be,
02:32all nations,
02:35the whole earth.
02:37Peace be with you.
02:38The new Pope also recalled from the balcony the memory of Pope Francis.
02:45This is the peace of the risen Christ,
02:51a disarmed peace and a disarming peace.
02:56and perseverance.
02:57Humble and persevering it comes from God,
03:03God who loves us all unconditionally.
03:11We still keep in our ears,
03:13that weak but always courageous voice of Pope Francis' blessing in Rome.
03:18The Pope who blessed in Rome,
03:31gave his blessing to the world,
03:33to the entire world,
03:35that Easter morning.
03:37Let me follow up on that same blessing.
03:40God loves us.
03:47God loves,
03:48you all and evil will not prevail.
03:51We are all in the hands of God.
03:59Therefore,
04:00without fear,
04:01united hand in hand with God,
04:03and among ourselves,
04:05let us move forward.
04:07We are disciples of Christ.
04:14Christ precedes us.
04:15The world needs his light.
04:18Humanity needs him,
04:20as the bridge to be reached by God,
04:22and his love.
04:28A number of tourists from the United States at the Vatican City
04:31share their thoughts on the election of the first American Pope.
04:35Well,
04:36I'm just hoping that the new Pope can help steer us in a good direction
04:40and run into politics.
04:41You know,
04:42right now it's very complicated.
04:45So,
04:46I'm just hoping that he's able to rekindle a good relationship
04:50with our president and like all the government officials,
04:53so that we can start going into a good route,
04:56I would say.
04:57I'm just excited to be part of history
04:59and have the first American Pope
05:01that's also part of history.
05:02It's just very exciting,
05:03and we're hopeful for what's to come.
05:06I mean, it's amazing.
05:07I think it comes at a really interesting time
05:10because, you know,
05:11we have all of this kind of political unrest right now
05:14with the Trump presidency in the U.S.
05:16and there's these religious kind of undertones
05:20with the Christian population in the United States.
05:25You know,
05:26Trump kind of used those values as he stood on those values
05:33for his election.
05:35So, it's kind of interesting to see.
05:37I'm curious to see how it goes
05:40and how, you know,
05:42politics in the U.S. is influenced by these kinds of like politics here.
05:50The new Bishop of Rome was born on September 14th, 1955.
05:55He arrived in Peru in 1985
05:57and since then he focused his work on the communities of that country
06:02with recent emphasis on the community of Chiclaggio,
06:05which he referred to in his first address as
06:08my beloved diocese.
06:10On January 30th, 2023,
06:12the Pope called him to Rome
06:14as Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops
06:17and President of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America
06:21and promoted him to Archbishop.
06:29And now let's take a short break,
06:31but remember you can join us on TikTok
06:33at TeleCityEnglish
06:34where you'll find news in different formats, news updates and more.
06:37We'll be right back and stay with us.
