00:43towards the communal state.
00:49Hello and welcome to From the South, I'm Alejandra Garcia from Telesub Studios in Caracas, Venezuela.
00:55To begin with, Denise, stay with us.
01:10The African Union has called for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire in the Democratic
01:15Republic of the Congo in view of the escalation of violence in the east of the nation.
01:20The body also called for the withdrawal of the M23 movement, the allied democratic forces,
01:25the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda and other armed groups currently operating
01:30in the territory.
01:31In addition, the African Union reiterated its full support for the sovereignty and territorial
01:36integrity of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and warned that it is a deteriorating
01:41humanitarian situation that requires collective regional action.
01:45Furthermore, the bloc stressed that there is no military solution to the conflict and
01:49called on the parties to return to the diplomatic channels to ensure the safety of the civilian
01:55population.
02:02In this context, the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child has warned about
02:06the situation of children in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
02:10It also denounced the increasing violence in the region by armed groups which often
02:15target children who are displaced or living in extreme poverty.
02:20In view of this situation, he urged the parties involved to put an end to these abuses and
02:24to negotiate an immediate ceasefire in order to protect the civilian population, especially
02:30children who are the most affected.
02:40The Lebanese Resistance Hezbollah and the Amal Movement rejected the presence of Israeli
02:51forces in large parts of Lebanese territory and considered it an act of state terrorism
03:04that reflects the aggressive nature of the Zionist enemy.
03:08The groups stressed that the actions carried out by the occupying army are a flagrant violation
03:13of the international ceasefire agreements.
03:16They also recalled that the reconstruction of what was destroyed by the Tel Aviv regime
03:20and compensations to the affected people must be a priority for the authorities.
03:32Israeli forces mounted Wednesday evening a raid, opening fire on several homes in the
03:37Farah refugee camp near Toubas in the occupied West Bank, claiming at least three Palestinians'
03:43lives.
03:44The occupation army kept with the corpses and justified their killings by claiming they
03:48were alleged wanted terrorists.
03:51On the raid, Israeli forces arrested two Palestinians.
03:54The genocidal ongoing offensive of the northern West Bank has pushed up to thousands the figure
04:00of displaced civilians.
04:02Jenin, its refugee camp, Tulkarem and its Nour Shams refugee camp had been some of the
04:07areas devastated by bulldozers that tore down infrastructure and soldiers who brought about
04:13more deaths.
04:19The gold market continues to see a lot of pressures to the upside as the market continues
04:24to look at the possibilities of terrorist wars and geopolitical problems around the
04:29world driven by President Trump's new tariff measures.
04:33The gold market continues to show a lot of upward momentum in the early hours of Thursday.
04:39Spot gold climbed to US$2,954.69 an ounce, making it 10th record high this year.
04:48As for US gold futures, its price gained 1.2%.
04:53As for Trump's tariffs, the President stated he would rise the tariffs on lumber, cars,
04:58semiconductors and pharmaceuticals next month or sooner.
05:02Besides these goods, Trump did impose a 10% tariff on Chinese imports and a 25% tariff
05:08on steel and aluminium.

05:23We'll be right back, stay with us.
05:28Welcome back to From the South.
05:50In the Vatican City, health authorities reported that Pope Francis spent a quiet night after
05:55showing a slight improvement in his pneumonia treatment, for which he remains hospitalised.
06:00According to sources at the Holy See, the Supreme Pontiff continues his treatment and
06:05work activities authorised by the treating physicians from his stay at the Agostina Gemeldi
06:11Hospital.
06:12He is signing documents, instructing his close aides via telephone while the pneumonia responds
06:17to the treatment.
06:19His health situation has sparked the solidarity of the international community and kept the
06:24Catholic parishioners on their toes.
06:32In Argentina, Catholics gathered on Wednesday night to pray for the health of Pope Francis
06:37and his native Buenos Aires.
06:39From the neighbourhood of Flores, where Jorge Bergoglio grew up, the parish priest Martin
06:44Bordi responded to the call of the Argentine Catholic Church to pray for the Pope's recovery,
06:50who at 88 years old is hospitalised in Rome due to pneumonia in both lungs.
06:55The faithfuls, who share a special bond with the first Latin American head of the Catholic
07:00Church, listened quietly to the Mass and joined in prayer.
07:08We are all very mobilised because, well, we are following minute by minute the reports,
07:13the medical reports.
07:14There is concern, but there is also a very nice reaction from the people of God, that
07:18is to turn to our temples and to pray for him.
07:20It is what he asks, what he always asked for and also what we can do.
07:24Pray a lot for him so that he has peace, so that he has health and good, that he can make
07:28this journey in peace, especially in peace.
07:31But the people pray and ask a lot for him, permanently.
07:35In Uruguay, a general strike and mobilisations called by the Inter-Union Workers' Plenary
07:40moves forward in solidarity with workers facing conflicts with companies.
07:45The rally is held in the Independence Square, in front of the headquarters of the Presidency
07:49of the Republic.
07:50The Confederation of Industrial Unions represents the workers that are in conflict situations
07:55with companies such as Colem, Calcar, Yasaki, among others.
07:59According to the Union, these mobilisations are also in opposition to anti-union repression
08:06and call for better working conditions regarding their rights.
08:12We are standing up in defence of the right to work.
08:16We are standing up in defence of our salary.
08:19We are standing up in defence of our conquered rights and against a model of inequality,
08:25a national model of national development that has shown its exhaustion, comrades and colleagues.
08:32In Panama, the People United for Life Alliance is calling for a march this Thursday towards
08:37the National Assembly to reject Bill 163 on the Social Security Fund.
08:42The protest was called after the release of 83 members of the Single National Union of
08:46Workers in the construction and light industries who were arrested following confrontations
08:51with riot police.
08:53In this sense, the Alliance is calling for a march to the National Assembly to reject
08:58following confrontations with riot police.
09:01In this sense, the Organisation expressed that this new regulation aims to steal the
09:05resources of the Social Security Fund and hand them over to the banks and private pension
09:10fund management companies.
09:12Meanwhile, the Parliament is continuing a second debate to approve other regulations
09:17and aspects of the management of the state body in charge of pensioners.
09:27The Mexican government sent an initiative to Congress for the reform of two Articles
09:32of the Constitution with the aim of protecting the country's territorial sovereignty.
09:36During her morning conference, President Claudia Chambon detailed that Articles 19 and 40 of
09:42the Constitution will be modified to clarify that any country, including the United States,
09:48can collaborate and work together with Mexico but without interference or violation of the
09:53nation's sovereignty.
09:54In this regard, the Articles will underscore that under no circumstances will interventions,
09:59meddling or any negative activity coming from abroad be accepted.
10:04Furthermore, the measure indicates that in case of investigations, they will not move
10:09forward without first obtaining the approval of the Mexican state.
10:16We are submitting the following initiative to incorporate into Article 40 of the Constitution.
10:22The people of Mexico, under any circumstances, will not accept interventions, meddling or
10:28any other act from abroad that is harmful to the integrity, independence and sovereignty
10:33of the nation, such as coups d'état, interference in elections or the violation of Mexican territory,
10:40whether by land, water, sea or airspace.
10:45The government of Mexico also warned the administration of Donald Trump that it would not allow
10:50extra-territorial actions after declaring Mexican cartels as terrorists without prior dialogue
10:56on the issue between the two countries.
11:04We share with the government of the United States the fight against these criminal groups,
11:09particularly because of their empathy in the violence they have against our country,
11:15as well as obviously cooperating to prevent trafficking.
11:20Particularly of synthetic drugs.
11:23Although all drugs are obviously illegal, but what we want to make clear in the face
11:28of this designation is that we do not negotiate sovereignty.
11:38The President of the United States marks his first month in office with a series of executive orders.
11:44During his first 31 days in office, Donald Trump admitted that the country is experiencing
11:49inflation, stressing that these economic indices were caused by Joe Biden's administration.
11:56In the same vein, Vermont Independent Senator Bernie Sanders pointed out that since Trump's
12:01rise, the three richest men in the world of technology and social media have become $215
12:07billion richer.
12:10Sanders argued that while this is happening, 60% of U.S. citizens are living paycheck to
12:15paycheck and 85 million are uninsured.
12:25The U.S. President Donald Trump assured that he is willing to seal a deal with China and
12:29Russia to reduce the nuclear arsenal, describing as unacceptable the use of atomic weapons.
12:35The GOP leader said so on his speech at the priority summit in Miami, where he addressed
12:41both domestic and global issues.
12:43Trump ensured that he has held phone conversations with his counterparts of Russia and China,
12:48Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping respectively.
12:51The U.S. head of state advanced that they have a common vision about the risk of nuclear
12:56armament.
12:57In all, he warned that if a nuclear conflict were to break out in these times, it would
13:01be 500 times worse than Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
13:31Welcome back to From the South.
13:53The government of Venezuela condemned the decision of the United States authorities
13:57to designate as terrorists different organizations, including the now extinct TRENDERAWA, a criminal
14:03structure that has already been dismantled in Venezuelan territory.
14:07Through a communiqué, the government of Venezuela stated that the organized crime group TRENDERAWA
14:12was, at the time, used by foreign agencies such as the FBI and the DEA for terrorist
14:18and destabilizing purposes against the institutionality of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.
14:24In addition, it was used by sectors of the Venezuelan ultra-right to create chaos, destabilization
14:29and violence in the country.
14:31It also stressed that the government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela informs that
14:36within the framework of the Return to the Homeland Plan, it has requested the repatriation
14:41of a group of nationals who were unjustly taken to the Guantanamo Naval Base.
14:46This request has been accepted and the citizens have been transferred to Honduras, from where
14:52they will be brought back by Kenyatta's planes to be reunited with their families.
14:57Venezuela expresses its gratitude to President Xiomara Castro and to the Honduran leader
15:02ex-president Manuel Zelaya for all the collaboration provided for the rescue of these compatriots.
15:15Also, Venezuela holds the high-level workshop on popular government to foster the transformation
15:20towards the criminal state.
15:22The event is led by the executive vice-president, Adelsi Rodríguez, together with the ministers
15:27of education, Héctor Rodríguez, of communes and social movements, Ángel Prado, of planning,
15:33Ricardo Menéndez, and the secretary of the Federal Council of Government, Leonardo Montezuma.
15:38It is aimed at civil servants from public institutions in order to optimize processes
15:44to respond to the people's power in the resolution of the requirements and needs.
15:48The initiative of President Nicolás Maduro is part of the fifth transformation of the
15:532025-2031 plan aimed at developing the country.
16:02President Nicolás Maduro has already reflected extensively on where we came from and where
16:07we are heading to.
16:09When Chávez was telling us about the Gramscian contradiction of that state that does not
16:14quite die and is not quite born, and that we were in the middle of that childbirth,
16:19I could say today to Commander Chávez,
16:21Commander we are taking giant steps in the direction and strategic guidelines that you
16:26taught us, to turn ministries into ministries of the people's power.
16:33On the other hand, the Venezuelan vice-president highlighted that the people's power was the
16:37center of the Bolivarian socialism.
16:41The people's power, dear Angel, has been the compass of this process.
16:46The people's power has been and will be the north star of our administration and that
16:51is why I say and I started saying that this is an unprecedented activity, because it is
16:56a workshop for the strategic guidelines of the management and implementation of public
17:01policies in the territory, together with the people's power and the communal organization.
17:08Colombian authorities reported Wednesday evening several blasts targeting two police stations
17:15in Popayán, the capital of the Cauca Southern Western Department.
17:19The first briefing on these incidents unfolded that one of the explosives detonated in an
17:24immediate attention command, alias CIA, and the other did it in La Carceleta, an old headquarters
17:32of a school.
17:34Security forces had been deployed to the scenes to determine the causes and quantify damages.
17:39Earlier, authorities informed there weren't any casualties from the blast.
17:44However, investigations are underway to find the offenders.
17:51Right now, the police personnel are in the park and in adjacent sectors of the park,
17:56making controls and verifying to try to establish if there was any use of a device such as a
18:02drone.
18:04It is still to be ruled out that it could have happened.
18:09At this moment, we further have explosives personnel inquiring into the area to determine
18:15if we have any additional elements.
18:18In Peru, over 450 families have been affected by the flooding of the Tambo and Urabamba
18:24river streams caused by heavy rains in the province of Atayala in Ucayali.
18:29According to authorities, the overflowing rivers have also caused damage to coca leaves
18:34and other plants.
18:35The authorities say the flooding of the Tambo and Urabamba river streams caused by heavy
18:40rains in the province of Atayala in Ucayali.
18:43According to authorities, the overflowing rivers have also caused damage to cocoa, banana
18:48and yucca crops, as well as the disappearance of livestock.
18:52In this sense, the major of the province of Atalaya expressed that in the face of this
18:57collapse, he is working to provide humanitarian assistance to the affected people.
19:01He also stressed that most of the people affected are indigenous people, so he expects the government
19:07to provide support in the emergency.
19:13Meanwhile, from the north to the south of Argentina, almost 150,000 hectares of forest
19:19have been affected by forest fires so far in 2025.
19:23Experts point out that the spending cuts promoted by President Javier Millet have limited the
19:28prevention and response capacity of the forces in charge of fighting the flames, prolonging
19:33the duration of several of the fires.
19:36In this sense, the flames spread in the territory due to air currents, dryness, humidity, high
19:41temperatures and lack of rain.
19:54Highly acclaimed director Soliman Sis, who is considered one of the pillars of the African
19:59cinema, has died at the age of 84.
20:02His daughter announced that Sis died on Wednesday, leaving a revolutionary legacy in cinema,
20:08spanning half a century that was marked by a commitment to African storytelling, deep
20:13humanism and profound political engagement.
20:16Sis won the jury's prize at the 1987 Cannes Film Festival for the movie Yelin Brightness,
20:23which draws on legends from West Africa's Bambara people.
