00:46Hello and welcome to From the South, I'm Alejandra Garcia from Telesur Studios in Caracas, Venezuela.
00:51We begin with the news, stay with us.
01:07The Brazilian government held an emergency meeting Tuesday to discuss the conditions
01:11in which the Trump administration is deporting the South American country's nationals.
01:16The meeting takes place one day after the charge the Affairs of the United States Embassy
01:21Gabriel Escobar was summoned by the Brazilian Foreign Ministry to explain why Brazilians
01:26are being deported in handcuffs.
01:29The purpose of the meeting is to discuss the terms of the deportation agreement with Washington
01:34and to define strategies to face future cases.
01:37The Brazilian government indicated that its objective is not to provoke confrontations
01:42but to make sure that its nationals are respected by Washington.
01:52In this context, the Brazilian government rejected the treatment received by its nationals
01:57from U.S. authorities after the first group of deportees arrived in handcuffs and shackles
02:02and claimed they had been mistreated during the deportation process.
02:06The Brazilian government ratified its determination to prevent similar cases from happening again
02:12especially with the arrival of new flights of deportees in the coming days.
02:16Lula da Silva's administration said it remains attentive to the changes in the U.S. immigration
02:22policies in order to warranty the protection, security and dignity of its nationals in the
02:27North American country.
02:31Meanwhile, an Italian Navy ship arrived in Albania on Tuesday with 49 migrants it has
02:40intercepted in international waters.
02:42The migrants were taken to special centres in Albania to check their asylum applications
02:47after the third such attempt following earlier obstacles raised by Italian courts.
02:52The 49 will be held at a reception centre in the port of Schengen, 66 kilometres northwest
02:59of the capital, before being taken to an accommodation centre in Llader, 22 kilometres to the east.
03:05The Italian Minister of Interior did not disclose the nationalities of the migrants.
03:10However, local media say they are from Bangladesh, Egypt, the Ivory Coast and Gambia.
03:23The first flight of Colombian nationals deported from the United States landed in Colombia
03:27on Tuesday.
03:28Around 110 people arrived in the South American country on board a Colombian Air Force plane,
03:34not a U.S. government plane, as other deportations.
03:38Unlike previous deportations, this process was carried out in conditions that warrant
03:43irrespective of human rights without the use of chains, shackles or other measures that
03:47violate people's dignity.
03:50According to the Colombian presidency, the citizens have no criminal records or arrest
03:54warrants which contradict previous claims by the President of the United States.
04:02The President of Honduras, Yamara Castro, warned that she is considering closing U.S.
04:09bases in national territory in view of the massive deportations executed by Trump's administration.
04:15The Honduran president stated that her government will be forced to re-evaluate the cooperation
04:20policies with the United States, specifically in the military field, following the enormous
04:26expulsions of Hondurans from that country.
04:30The head of state mentioned the Sotocano Air Base, alias Palmerola, which has housed
04:36the U.S. Southern Command's Joint Task Force, BRAVO, since 1982, which would lose all justification
04:43for remaining in the Central American nation if hostile measures against Honduran citizens
04:48are taken.
04:49The statements come as a response to Trump's stance, who has already accepted deportations
04:55of migrants, of which around 560,000 are Hondurans.
05:07In Argentina, the drivers' union La Fraternidad staged a six-hour rail strike after wage negotiations
05:13broke down.
05:14The union is demanding the payment of a basic food basket equivalent to 10 percent of workers'
05:20salaries, around $153,000, to compensate for inflation.
05:25The strike will affect all the lines operated by the company, leaving one million passengers
05:30without transport.
05:32All lines in the metropolitan area are also affected, leading to long lines at bus stops
05:37near stations.
05:44And now we have a short break coming up, but first remember you can join us on TikTok at

06:18The Venezuelan National Assembly approved an agreement to support a call for elections
06:22made by the National Electoral Council, CNE.
06:25During the assembly session, the lawmakers declared that the far-right will not use again
06:30the democratic system to provoke violence in the country.
06:34On the other hand, the President of Parliament, Jorge Rodríguez, proposed the CNE to take
06:38into account the last laws passed by the legislative power to prevent criminal groups and those
06:44who do not recognize the electoral results from participating again in elections of this
06:49nature in the country.
06:51Rodríguez also congratulated the electoral power for its efficiency in establishing the
06:56election date and said that was an essential moment to defend the peace in the nation.
07:03I think this is an essential moment for the defense of peace and of the electoral results
07:13established by the Venezuelan people through their votes.
07:18The President of the National Assembly also affirmed that the far-right opposition is
07:22not above the Venezuelan organic law and called for the Bolivarian legislation to be applied
07:27to them for their actions against the nation.
07:32They are under the legal status of the organic law, libertad del sermón Bolívar, and it
07:41has to be applied to them and their leaders and their political parties in Venezuela.
07:48In another part of his address to the National Assembly, Rodríguez reiterated that the United
07:52Socialist Party of Venezuela and the Patriotic Pole will recognize and respect the results
07:57of the next April 27th elections.
07:59No matter what it is, the result of the elections of the National Assembly and governors of
08:06the State Assembly of April 2025, the United Socialist Party of Venezuela and the Great
08:14Patriotic Pole will recognize all of the electoral results that come from the polls on April
08:2227th.
08:24In Cuba, students from all over the country march in commemoration of the 172nd anniversary
08:30of the birth of José Martí, the island's national hero.
08:33The historic march of the torches illuminated the streets of Havana, reminding the world
08:38of the prevalence of the ideals of the independence hero and anti-imperialist leader José Martí.
08:44In this sense, young Cubans, mostly university students, marched throughout the city to pay
08:49tribute to the most universal of Cubans.
08:52Moreover, the event was accompanied by Army General Raúl Cáceres, significant leader
08:57of the Cuban Revolution, and Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, President of the Republic.
09:02During the event, authorities recalled Martí's legacy and called on the country's youth
09:07to express their pride for their homeland and the Cuban Revolution.
09:17In the framework of the commemoration of the 172nd anniversary of the birth of José Martí,
09:24Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel said,
09:26The flame of admiration and respect for the apostle of our independence, who is also
09:31the apostle of our profound anti-imperialism, is growing every year.
09:35Martí lives on all of those who do not allow themselves to be dazzled or intimidated by
09:41the brutal and violent north that despises us.
09:44During the Chinese New Year celebrations, President Xi Jinping highlighted China's

11:07Welcome back to From the South.
11:15In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, several citizens mobilized in Kinshasa city in support
11:20of the country's armed forces.
11:22According to local media, the demonstrators attacked the embassies of France, the United
11:26States, Belgium, Kenya and Uganda, claiming that these nations support Rwanda's aggression.
11:32Under the slogans, no to the massacre of the Congolese people and no to the plundering
11:37of our minerals, the protesters denounced Rwanda's complicity in the crisis of violence
11:42that the country is facing.
11:44Moreover, the citizens rejected the actions of the M23 fighters and showed their support
11:49for the armed forces of the country.
11:51In addition, they expressed their solidarity with the villages suffering from violence
11:55and insecurity.
11:59Meanwhile, the United Nations Organization warned about the humanitarian crisis that
12:05the population of the Democratic Republic of the Congo is facing due to the armed conflict.
12:10In addition, the spokesperson of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian
12:15Affairs, OCHA, Jens Laerck, warned that the residents of the city of Goma, the capital
12:21of the North Kivu, have reached a critical moment due to the imminent shortage of food
12:27and drinking water.
12:28Moreover, the international body also indicated that there are several corpses laying in the
12:34streets of the city and hospitals are crowded with dozens of wounded civilians.
12:45The ephemeral calm that had prevailed in Northern Kivu, in the east of the Democratic Republic
12:49of the Congo, has been disrupted since fighting has restarted in Goma, the capital city.
12:55The M23 rebels, backed by more than 4,000 Rwandan soldiers, seized the regional capital
13:01and early Tuesday morning fighting began in the cities of Vierere and Kisubukavu, bordering
13:07Rwanda.
13:08In this sense, telecommunications remain cut off and many areas have no power or water
13:14supply in the cities.
13:15According to local medical reports, there are so far 17 dead and more than 350 wounded.
13:21Meanwhile, Congolese President Félix Chikisseri is expected to address a message to the country
13:27on Tuesday, on the eve of the United Nations Security Council, which will focus on the
13:31situation in North Kivu.
13:33On Tuesday night, Israeli occupation forces carried out a series of raids on villages
13:54west of Ramallah, West Bank.
13:56In Baitiyu, soldiers raided the house of a prisoner who was to be released under the
14:01Gaza Ceasefire Agreement, threatening reprisals over a possible public celebration.
14:07These raids, which did not require a warrant, were repeated in the Deir Emmar area.
14:12The Israeli authorities carried out these operations under the pretext of finding wanted
14:17Palestinians, provoking clashes with the local population.
14:26More than 300,000 people have crossed from southern Gaza into the north as the United
14:31Nations warns that needs on the ground remain immense.
14:35According to al-Jazeera's team on the ground, many of the returnees set up their makeshift
14:41shelters near the ruins of their destroyed homes in northern Gaza, starting their lives
14:46again from scratch.
14:48United Nations special rapporteurs and independent experts say Israel's repression of Palestinians
14:54in the occupied West Bank is escalating with no end in sight.
14:59Israel's war on Gaza has killed at least 47,354 Palestinians and wounded 111,563 since
15:09October 7, 2023.
15:13Look at this scene, a scene of complete destruction.
15:16There is no village that was destroyed like Marwahan, honestly.
15:20Complete destruction in Marwahan.
15:21May God help the people of Marwahan.
15:23Since yesterday morning, in coordination with the Lebanese army, we've been working on
15:28reopening roads inside the village in order to facilitate the entry of the village residents
15:33to inspect their destroyed homes.
15:35The president of Poland, Andrzej Duda, rejected any possibility of activation of the Russian
15:40Nord Stream gas pipelines which supply Europe and call for their dismantling.
15:46According to the Polish head of state, the pipeline represents an energy and military
15:50threat to Ukraine, Poland, Slovakia and other Central European countries and is also a symbol
15:56of Russia's economic domination over Europe.
15:58On the other hand, experts warned about the implications for the European economy to
16:03stop buying cheap gas from Russia and that the decision would only benefit the United
16:08States and some of its allies.
16:14In this context, the Danish government authorized the shutdown of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline
16:19and granted a permit for the repair of the structures damaged by the September 2022 sabotage.
16:25The permit was granted to Gazprom's subsidiary, Nord Stream 2 AG, to prevent gas from leaking
16:33into the Baltic Sea by installing plugs at the damaged ends of the pipeline.
16:39The Nord Stream 2 pipeline project cost $11 billion and was completed in 2021.
16:45It was intended to pump gas from Russia to Germany and the European market.
