00:00On the second day of the Conclave, United States Cardinal Robert Provost has been elected
00:17as the new pontiff of the Catholic Church, Pope Leo XIV.
00:24Russian President Vladimir Putin held a meeting with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping where
00:29they signed several strategic cooperation agreements.
00:35In Venezuela, flight number 20 arrived at Maiketilla International Airport to bring back
00:40home 315 migrants as part of the return to the homeland governmental plan.

00:55We begin with the news.
01:13Leo XIV has been elected as the 267th Pope of the Catholic Church after two days of conclave
01:20in the Vatican City.
01:22East Cardinal Robert Provost, born in Chicago, United States, who has become the first Pope
01:27of that nationality.
01:29Provost is 69 years old and has spent 40 years as a missionary in Peru, the country where
01:34he became a bishop.
01:36In his speech from the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica, Leo XIV mentioned the Synodal Church,
01:42a concept promoted by Francis and very controversial with the more conservative camp.
01:57Dearest brothers and sisters, this is the first greeting of the risen Christ, the Good Shepherd,
02:07who gave his life for the flock of God.
02:10I too would like this greeting of peace to enter your hearts and reach your families, all peoples,
02:22wherever they may be, all nations, the whole earth.
02:29Peace be with you.
02:31In this regard the new Pope recalled from the balcony the memory of Pope Francis.

06:13the 267th Pope of the Catholic Church who took the name of Leo XIV. We express our congratulations to the
06:23Vatican City State for this election, which symbolizes a renewed commitment to the values of love,
06:28compassion and unity. May your leadership inspire all to follow the path of peace and hope. We reaffirm
06:36our willingness to continue strengthening bilateral relations with the Vatican State on issues of common
06:41interest such as the promotion of human rights, the defense of the most vulnerable and care for the
06:48environment. The President of Honduras, Xiomara Castro, also welcomed the election of Pope Leo XIV,

07:29Honduras celebrates his firm commitment to social justice in the tradition of Leo XIII and his historic
07:36encyclical prerum novarum, which vindicates the dignity of work, the social function of prosperity

07:55From Russia, Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel also greeted the election of Robert Prevost as the new
08:00Pope of the Holy See. Through his social networks, the Cuban head of state expressed that
08:05we congratulate His Holiness Pope Leo XIV on his recent election. We share the will to promote dialogue
08:13and peace. We will continue to work for the strengthening of relations between Cuba and the Holy See,
08:19which are celebrating their 90th anniversary this year.
08:22In this context, the Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez greeted as well the election of His Holiness
08:37Pope Leo XIV as the new Pope, successor of the Holy Pope Francis. Through his social networks, the Foreign
08:44Minister emphasized that we join in congratulating His Holiness Pope Leo XIV on his recent election. We
08:52reiterate the will of the Cuban government to continue strengthening the positive relations
08:57between Cuba and the Holy See.
09:04For his part, the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, congratulated Pope Leo XIV for being elected on
09:11Thursday on the second vote. The head of the Kremlin underscored, I trust that the constructive dialogue
09:18and interaction between Russia and the Vatican will continue to develop on the basis of the Christian

10:15four continents to celebrate the great victory of the Red Army over Nazi Germany in 1945. Heads of government
10:23and senior officials had arrived to this city to attend the commemorating act, including those of allied
10:29nations such as Venezuela, China, Brazil and Cuba. Moreover, they reaffirmed their will to boost bilateral
10:36cooperation to work on building up a new multipolar world order. Furthermore, such active participation in
10:43such historical celebration has consolidated strategic alliances to face the challenges posed by the
10:49Western elite. Indeed, the day of the victory in the Great Patriotic War has been considered as one of
10:56the pillars of historical memory and national identity. As part of his agenda in his official visit to Moscow,
11:08the Venezuelan head of state further held talks with the President of Burkina Faso, Ibrahim Traore,
11:15to strengthen South-South relations with that nation. On the meeting, both senior leaders discuss issues
11:21to consolidate and review their strategic cooperation deals in areas of common interest, such as economy,
11:27politics and energy. So far, the governments of Venezuela and Burkina Faso have signed over 21 agreements
11:34aimed at confronting the unilateral measures imposed by the U.S. administration.
11:46The President of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, met with the Patriarch of the Russian Orthodox Church,
11:51Vladimir Mikhailovich, in the Historical Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow. On the meeting,
11:58the religious leader recognized the work of President Maduro to ensure peace and tranquility in his
12:04country. Overall, the Patriarch wrote an emotional message to express his admiration for the South
12:10American nation. Meanwhile, the head of state noted that Venezuela is committed to a world full of respect
12:17and equity. In this context, the presidential visit ended with a tour of that holy site and an exchange of
12:25gifts as a symbol of friendship. In the framework of the 80th anniversary of Victory Day in Russia,
12:38President Vladimir Putin held a meeting with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping, where they signed
12:43several strategic cooperation agreements. At the reunion, the Russian head of state assured that Moscow
12:49and Beijing remained staunch defenders of the historic truth and remembered the countless people their
12:55countries lost during World War II, stressing that the sacrifices that both their nations made should
13:02never be forgotten. In echoing remarks, Xi highlighted the need for the continuous development of the
13:08country's bilateral relations as both leaders agreed to deepen the global partnership and strategic
13:14cooperation. For this, the foreign ministers of both nations signed a joint declaration and strengthening

14:04Welcome back to From the South. In Venezuela, flight number 20 arrived at Maiketia International
14:10Airport to bring back home 315 migrants as part of the return to the homeland governmental plan.
14:17The Conviasa airline departed from Mexico to turn back several Venezuelan migrants detained at the
14:22Mexican-US border, as well as several relatives of the Venezuelans kidnapped in El Salvador. Over 3,000
14:30nationals have been able to come back home as a result of the governmental plan to rescue them from the
14:36U.S. anti-immigration policies. In addition, Maduro's government has been making great efforts to get
14:42Venezuelan migrants away from the Salvadoran second prison. Likewise, it was advanced the arrival of
14:49another flight with Venezuelan migrants on Friday.
14:59In Peru, demonstrators take to the streets to protest over the death of
15:03Raifredio La Caribeña journalist at the hands of alleged hitmen in the Amazon city of Iquitos.
15:10Seventy-year-old journalist Raul Celis Lopez was murdered on his way to work on board of a motorcycle
15:16cab at around 5.30 a.m. This is the second murder of a Peruvian journalist so far in 2025,
15:22according to the National Association of Journalists. The people of Iquitos mobilized to demand justice for
15:28the murder of the journalist who received death threats after denouncing land and land trafficking
15:34in his program. The protest took place at the headquarters of the police and the judiciary
15:40in rejection of the growing wave of violence in the city of Loreto.
15:43In Ecuador, residents of the native community of Salango demanded justice on Wednesday in the case
15:55of the sale of beaches over which they have ancestral rights. The Salango community argues that the
16:01Ecuadorian government ignored their community rights by allowing the legal sale and appropriation of
16:07approximately 84 acres of land in 2000 to a real estate company managed by a Swiss national.
16:14Community members argue that the sale has restricted their access to the natural resources that have
16:20historically sustained their economy and cultural identity. Next, May 20th, the Inter-American
16:26Court of Human Rights will hold a public hearing to address the case.
