00:00The United Nations Children's Fund revealed on Friday that the number of children displaced
00:13by violence in Haiti rose by 48% in less than a year.
00:21The people and government of Venezuela are preparing for their first popular consultation
00:24in the year 2025.
00:30In Colombia, after the Security Council held on Friday in the Department of Santander,
00:33the government announced that it will decree a state of internal commotion in the area.
00:42Hello and welcome to From the South, I'm Luis Alberto Matos from Televisa Studios in Havana,
00:47Cuba.
00:48We begin with the news, and we do so in Haiti.
00:50The United Nations Children's Fund revealed on Friday that the number of children displaced
00:54by violence rose by 48% in less than a year.
00:57According to the multilateral organization, one out of eight children is a displaced person,
01:02and it is estimated that there are currently more than half a million.
01:05Its executive director, Catherine Rousseau, was categorically affirming that this is a
01:10horrible time to be a child in Haiti.
01:13In addition to all the realities they face, displaced people in a country in the midst
01:17of several crises, children without homes, schools, food or medicine are also victims
01:22of sexual abuse.
01:24In this context, during the same period, 186 rapes were reported, 173 of them against minors.
01:37And in Cuba, President Miguel Díaz-Canel said that innovation is the way and the many
01:40works collective, such as the Fructuoso Rodríguez Orthopedic Hospital, are demonstrating it.
01:46Correspondent in Havana, Fabiola López, has all the details.
01:52Havana's orthopedic teaching, Hospital Fructuoso Rodríguez, a long time ago, made headlines
01:57in the press for being the institution where the partial hip prosthesis created in Cuba
02:02are implanted.
02:03This time it is in the news again on the island.
02:05Now for the revolution it is undergoing in its medical services, research and innovation
02:10and patient care.
02:11We have found a way to solve different problems that, due to the country's needs, could not
02:21be solved this year.
02:22I don't know if it will be solved in 2025, but I don't think so either.
02:29What is happening?
02:30Each hospitalization room was estimated to cost between 4, 5 and 6 million pesos to repair,
02:36but there are six rooms.
02:37We already have three rooms repaired and we are finishing the fourth one free of charge
02:41with an exceptional quality.
02:45The hospital is living at this time a new experience of a joint trade between medium
02:53and small state and private companies, diverse institutions and the revolutionary armed forces
02:59for a capital repair in times of blockade and maximum pressure.
03:02Jolly, a small and medium-sized food and beverage company, is one of the private companies that
03:07have joined the initiative.
03:13As a private micro and small business, we have made a disinterested contribution to
03:16the hospital and the services and everything that can be improved.
03:22It is a very nice project, I liked it from the first moment and we are here body and
03:25soul giving ourselves to this project.
03:27So far we have repaired three recovery rooms for patients, we have done the hydraulic part
03:31and the constructive part, the painting part, we have contributed with the hospital's food,
03:35with the coal chambers that there was no coal chamber to maintain the food.
03:42This hospital institution, in addition to being a development and innovation unit, intends
03:49to become an international research center.
03:52They recently received a donation from the studio of Cuban troubadour Silvia Rodriguez,
03:57which included high-definition cameras and connectivity equipment for live transmissions.
04:05Many things can be achieved with this equipment, either the transmission of these images to
04:09the hospital for teaching purposes and some other objectives that are of interest to the
04:12hospital, as well as international video conferences or making the streaming of these videos internationally
04:25because there are cases that are interesting and it was necessary not only for Cuba but
04:28for the rest of the world.
04:35Among the personalities who have joined the hospital remodeling project is musician Alito
04:40Reve, who donated the funding for the epoxy resin needed for surgical areas.
04:48I had hip surgery.
04:52I feel very well and I am recovering.
05:03The hospital needed a donation for the operating room and Alito Reve donated the money that
05:07was needed for the room to recover the fructuoso room and many patients have already been operated.
05:17And I feel very happy with this help that I gave for the hospital and for my country.
05:33As if that were not enough, just a few meters away from the hospital, with the contribution
05:38of the armed forces, this organoponics was built with houses made of covered roofing
05:42for the feeding of workers, patients and their families.
05:45The times can be complicated, said the president of the country, but he warns that they can
05:49be overcome and they are overcome when working with intelligence.
05:53The people and government of Venezuela are preparing for the first consultation to be
05:59held this year 2025.
06:00In this context, the Ministry of Popular Power for the Communes held a working meeting to
06:05finalize details of the electoral schedule.
06:08According to the national authorities, the first popular consultation is scheduled for
06:12next February 2nd.
06:13The Venezuelan authorities pointed out during the meeting that a work process has been generated
06:19consulted by the popular places where assemblies were initiated in all the communal circuits
06:24and communes.
06:25In this sense, they indicated that in the next few days they will begin with the electoral
06:28campaign and will install tables to prepare for the date.
06:36We started today with a great national day of popular assemblies in all the communal
06:43circuits, communes, communal councils that will last until next Monday.
06:49Our people who have prioritized projects will begin to discuss them in the assemblies and
06:54will bring their ideas and proposals and they will be received in a system that we have
06:59where all this information will be sent, in the next few days we will also be doing the
07:03whole electoral campaign process, installing the polling stations and preparing ourselves
07:10so that February 2nd will be a day of participative democracy and an electoral party where millions
07:16of men and women will go to their polling stations to vote for their projects and immediately
07:21receive their resources and continue executing very important works in all the communities,
07:27especially to solve problems of public services, economic development and youth projects.
07:35For his part, the Vice President of the Organization of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela,
07:39Pedro Infante, said that next January 21st, the projects that will go to the consultation
07:44must be approved, assuring that this year will be extraordinary for the people's power.
07:51There are 16 days left, attention community members, attention communal circuits, 16 days
07:57of development of the electoral chronogram that corresponds at this precise moment, well
08:03they are developing assemblies in each of the communal councils, more than 46,000 communal
08:08councils and assemblies in each of the communal circuits, more than 5,000 communal circuits,
08:14assemblies for the submission of projects, the people have a project for public lighting,
08:19viability of public services for entrepreneurship or different health and sports projects, for
08:25the issues and needs that our people have in each of their communities.
08:29So we have today, tomorrow Saturday 18, Sunday 19, Monday 20, Tuesday 21, until Tuesday 21
08:39the projects that will go to popular consultation next Sunday February 2nd must be submitted
08:44and approved. These projects will be loaded into the system established by the National
08:50Electoral Council, the governing body that organizes the elections in our country.
08:58We have our first short break coming up, but remember you can join us on TikToks where
09:01you'll find news in different formats, news updates and much more. We're going to be right
09:06back, stay with us.
09:20Welcome back. In Guatemala the government of Bernardo Arevalo is promoting a new attempt
09:25to establish a water law which is considered by the Farmers Development Committee as a
09:29maneuver to privatize the country's water. Let's see.
09:36These territorial coordinators of the Peasant Development Committee are promoting a campaign
09:40to alert the communities about what they consider an attempt by the state to privatize water
09:44in Guatemala.
09:50This is for the people to wake up and realize what is happening because we are clear that
09:56the people of Guatemala are never consulted. Decisions are always made from the practice
10:01of the state.
10:06In August 2024, the president formed the specific water cabinet responsible for proposing a
10:12water law in Guatemala to be presented to the legislature in 2025.
10:20We will create a framework so that water, this invaluable resource that abounds in Guatemala,
10:24is used by all for the benefit of all.
10:29Human rights advocates warn that the state's proposal would seek to secure water for industries
10:35that have historically monopolized more than 70% of water sources, without paying for it.
10:42It is a failed and corrupt state because everything it does is for the benefit of the powerful
10:47and it is to take advantage of the people's goods. It is a robbery, it is a plundering
10:51of the wealth of the people.
10:53Over the last 40 years, more than 20 water bills have been introduced in the legislature,
11:01some of which include penalties and permits for indigenous communities for using water.
11:06None have prospered.
11:11And only two have an opinion, and that is rodent food in some archives of the Congress
11:16of the Republic.
11:21This is the legislative or legal reality on the water issue.
11:31In this situation, the Peasant Development Committee suggests a National Constituent
11:35Assembly to draft a new constitution where water is managed and cared for by the native
11:40communities as they have done historically.
11:45Moving on to Colombia, after the Security Council held on Friday in the Department of
11:50Santander, the government announced it will decree a state of internal commotion in the
11:53area. Clashes between the National Liberation Army and dissident factions of the Revolutionary
11:58Armed Forces of Colombia have led President Gustavo Petro to lead this meeting to address
12:03the situation in the Catatumbo region, where so far there have been 30 deaths, about 20
12:08kidnapped and numerous displaced people in cities of the same department.
12:13The meeting granted extraordinary powers to the head of state to adopt measures that would
12:16lead to the re-establishment of order in the area. Other measures and decisions taken during
12:21the meeting, including the establishment of the state of internal commotion, will be official
12:25decrees in the next hours.
12:32In this context, Venezuela has received displaced Colombians after clashes between the ELN and
12:37dissidents of the FARC's 33rd Front in Catatumbo, north of Santander.
12:42Venezuelan government expressed its solidarity with the people of Colombia and activated
12:45a mechanism to receive and assist those displaced by the violence of paramilitary young groups.
12:51According to official information, the latest clashes left at least 30 civilians dead, 20
12:55kidnapped and dozens wounded.
13:03The Constitutional Court of Ecuador upheld the ruling that annulled the five-month suspension
13:08imposed against Vice President Veronica Abad. The highest instance determined that public
13:13positions of popular election cannot be removed nor suspended through administrative processes,
13:18as the Ministry of Labor did in November.
13:21The decision supports that taking back a judge who denounced threats and intimidation by
13:25collaborators of President Daniel Oboa, who has used all the resources at his disposal,
13:30not necessarily legal, to prevent the Vice President from assuming the presidency of
13:34Ecuador during his leave of four-day electoral campaign, as dictated by the Constitution.
13:45We now have a second short break coming up, but before we invite you to join us on our

14:15Welcome back. The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees near
14:32the Middle East has confirmed that its schools, health centers and hospitals will open normally
14:39on February 1, 2025, despite restrictions imposed by Israel. Philip Lazarina, UNRWA
14:46commissioner-general, emphasized that these limitations would not directly affect operations
14:50in Gaza, although activities in East Jerusalem will be compromised due to the total ban on
14:56operations in that area. Lazarina criticized the Israeli campaign against UNRWA and rejected
15:00the proposal to replace it with other UN agencies, arguing that none has the capacity to adequately
15:06care for the more than 650,000 Palestinian refugees.
15:17Israeli occupation forces carried out three massacres in the Gaza Strip during the last
15:2124 hours, killing at least 23 Palestinians. Health authorities added that Israeli actions
15:27left more than 80 wounded. Authorities warned that ball figures could be even higher, since
15:31many of the victims remain trapped under rubble. Occupation forces continue to hinder
15:36the movement of ambulances and civil defense teams. According to a most recent health report,
15:41at least 46,899 Palestinians have been killed and 110,725 injured since October 2023.
15:57Meanwhile, the Israeli Ministry of Justice published the names of at least 735 Palestinians
16:02who will be released as part of the ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip. The communique
16:06detailed that the release includes 230 Palestinians sentenced to life imprisonment, several of
16:11them locked up for decades. Tel Aviv plans to release about 1,167 Gazan residents captured
16:18in the midst of the attacks of October 7, 2023. In addition, as part of the truce reached,
16:23it plans to increase the amount of humanitarian aid to assist the population that remains
16:27in Palestine.
16:33In Bolivia, activists gathered in front of the Argentine embassy to protest against the
16:37genocide perpetrated by the Israeli regime against the Palestinian people. During the
16:41day, citizens raised Palestinian slogans and banners against the repression that some governments,
16:46such as that of Javier Millet, a recognized ally of Zionism, applied to activists who
16:51denounce Israeli crimes. In this sense, the protests show its support to trade union leader
16:56Alejandro Bodar, who was arrested and sentenced to serve six months in prison in Argentina
17:01for showing solidarity with the Palestinian cause. It is important to note that the agreement
17:05will come into force on Sunday, January 19, and yet Israel continues with its attacks
17:11and bombings.
17:18We are in front of the embassy of Argentina because there is a comrade militant who has
17:24been taken prisoner for six months in jail. It is unjust, so we are protesting against
17:29these colonialist policies that some presidents have in South America.
17:36There is my law, there is Peru, there is Ecuador. We also have to go on fighting little by little.
17:42We have to win over the people as well as the militants and the public in general. We
17:46are anti-colonialists. We do not want colonies to exist.
17:52We are in full support of the Palestinian resistance and condemn the genocidal acts
17:59of Israel. This week, a ceasefire agreement was reached, but Israel continues bombing
18:05the people who celebrate that there is going to be a ceasefire and Israel bombs them killing
18:09children, as it has been doing for more than a year, in the most brutal way in women and
18:13women as well. With respect to the murder that we have seen against journalists and
18:16doctors from Bolivia, we pronounce ourselves against all this genocide that is being committed,
18:20which is not only in Palestine, but is spreading the Israeli attacks in Lebanon and Syria.
18:24We condemn all of this.
18:28Russian authorities banned the import of livestock products from the European Union under transit
18:33through its territory due to a foot and mouth disease outbreak in Germany. The decision
18:40follows the confirmation by the German agriculture agency, Rossell Just Natsur, of the first
18:46outbreak in a farm in Brandenburg near Berlin. Restrictions were also implemented in several
18:51Latin American, European and Asian countries, while Belgium, Ireland, the Netherlands and
18:55Poland tightened controls to prevent the spread of the disease.
19:11At the New Year Festival in Beijing highlighted the interpretation of El Alma Llanera, an
19:21emblematic work of Venezuelan music. The show was in charge of the colonels of the National
19:26Bolivarian Armed Forces of Venezuela, Rubel Bogatti Morello and Edward Sarmiento Paz,
19:32students of the 48th course of the International College of Defense and Strategy of the Peoples
19:36of the Republic of China. The event held at the National Defense University brought
19:41together family members and authorities who enjoyed this musical piece considered a popular
19:46hymn in Venezuela. The performance, which included dance and music, highlighted the
19:52patriotic pride and the cultural importance of El Alma Llanera, recognized as an asset
19:57of cultural interest in Venezuela since 2014.
