00:00Hello and welcome to Manchester World. My name is Theo Guesenbet and this video is your transport update for the week here in Greater Manchester.
00:07Now we've got some very exciting news from the region, particularly Wigan, so we're going to crack straight on.
00:12And we're going to start in Goulbourne in Wigan because plans are in motion for a brand new train station there that will connect the area to the rail network for the first time in 60 years.
00:21The project has now been greenlit by the council and is part of Transport for Greater Manchester's plans to introduce eight new rail lines into the B network.
00:29Now the plans should be completed by 2028, but the Goulbourne station in particular could be huge for the local economy.
00:34Goulbourne-based engineering firm Murphy have been hired to develop the final designs and the hope is that the station itself will be up and running by 2027.
00:41The move is huge for the area, with local residents having been advocating for it for a long, long time and it's said to be the only direct link into Manchester from the area.
00:49No tram, bus or train currently serves the place directly.
00:53Sticking in Wigan though, the popularity of the night buses over the last few months will see a park and ride stop in Tildsley treble in size.
01:00Plans submitted to the council will add 99 parking spaces and electric charging points, with the guided busway between Manchester and Lea being incredibly popular.
01:08Now demand for parking at the park and ride has grown much too big and this expansion will allow the route to continue to serve the people of Wigan without massively disrupting the local area.
01:17Work is expected to start in early 2026 and it should be completed by summer of the same year.
01:23Finally, £1.3 million of active travel funding is set to be used to increase the amount of school streets in Greater Manchester.
01:30This is going to encourage kids to walk, cycle or scoot to and from school without being overly affected by traffic and is a great idea keeping kids active and keeping cars off the road.
01:39That's all for now, thank you for watching and follow Manchester World for more.
