The University College Union and Cardiff University have agreed on a deal to cancel industrial action as the uni pauses potential job cuts. It’s been an ongoing saga since earlier on this year, with plans to axe 400 staff members turning into less than 300, and now assurances no cuts will take place in 2025 - but nothing is promised beyond this year.

00:00Planned industrial action here at Cardiff University has been cancelled after the uni
00:07officially paused its job cuts until at least the end of this year. As many as 400 staff members
00:12were set to be laid off as part of plans to scale back some courses at the university announced
00:17earlier on this year but in the meantime that number was lowered to less than 300 and with
00:22strikes and other pressures on the university they have now said that there will be no more
00:27redundancies to happen for the rest of 2025. This is partly due to the number of people taking
00:32voluntary redundancies across the staff. In plans released earlier on this year a number of departments
00:38faced the chopping block including music and most controversially the nursing department which
00:43has since had assurances it will stay open for the time being at least something politicians in the
00:48Senate as well as health bosses across Wales welcomed. At the time of the initial cuts students told me
00:54they were concerned for the future of the university and in particular for their future studies without
01:00assurances moving into the next few years. It seems though that the latest deal struck between the
01:05university college union and Cardiff uni is something of a stop gap to keep things in line for the time
01:10being with no assurances of job security past the end of this year and talks around cutting some
01:15departments still on the cards with further discussions to take place in June. A spokesperson for
01:21Cardiff university said that they hope now to move forward with more positive and constructive talks
01:26with campus trade unions on how to work together to address immediate financial challenges and secure
01:32the university's long-term future. A welcome relief for staff and students but there are no promises for
