00:54Hello and welcome to From the South. I'm Alejandra Garcia from Telesur Studios in Havana, Cuba. We begin with the news.
01:10In Peru, the relatives of the 13 miners who were murdered in the Patas province demanded justice for their loved ones in view of the government's inaction.
01:25Victims reportedly worked for a contractor of La Poderosa Gold Mining Corporation.
01:30In late April, their relatives reported that they had been kidnapped by criminal groups linked to illegal mining.
01:37Likewise, their families highlighted the police, ignored their warnings and a video of their executions.
01:43Meanwhile, local media unfolded their co-workers found sunday their bodies.
01:49In this regard, the Peruvian Congress urged the executive branch to respond firmly and take immediate action against organized crime.
02:00In this context, in the mining province of Patas, eight people injured in another kidnapping are being evacuated after an ambush.
02:11The authorities announced that the injured people are two policemen and six mining workers
02:16and stated that six of those affected had to be transferred by helicopter to be treated in the city of Trujillo.
02:23Local authorities also stated that the ambush arose after an attempt to take over the Arakoto camp of the Carabeli Mining Company,
02:31located in the district of Tayabamba in the province of Patas.
02:35Meanwhile, military and police contingents are trying to control the situation by order of the government.
02:42In Argentina, the population's distrust of President Javier Millet's administration has increased for the fifth consecutive month.
03:02A study by the Torcuato di Telo University revealed that the Government Confidence Index in April scored 2.33 points,
03:11a decrease of minus 3.7% compared to March 2025.
03:16The study shows a negative variation in five components, such as the government's inability to solve the country's problems,
03:24the efficiency in the administration of public expenditure, the general evaluation of the government,
03:30and the concern for the general interest.
03:33The Association of Journalists of El Salvador expressed its rejection of threats to issue an arrest warrant against a journalist of the digital media, El Faro.
03:52What is happening right now reflects a more pressing and darker situation.
04:03It is very likely that next year's report will have to be called, doing, journalism, is not a crime.
04:11Because what is happening right now is one more step in the criminalization of the practice of journalism.
04:17I believe that we have to raise our heads, we have to stand tall, we, journalists, are not criminals.
04:25We, journalists, do a very important job for democratic cities, for democracy.
04:32What we have done is an investigation based on the journalistic method,
04:36and they are trying to impose a narrative that basically wants to manipulate in a very perverse way,
04:43and make us look, as if we are the ones who commit crimes, as if we were criminals.
04:52In Guatemala, members of the 48 cantons, together with Guatemalan indigenous people,
04:57mobilized against the criminalization of former indigenous authorities in the country.
05:01Demonstrators advanced from Plaza de la Constitución in front of the seat of government,
05:06to the Supreme Court of Justice, demonstrating with banners their discontent with the salary increase
05:12that the legislators had prescribed for themselves.
05:16In this sense, on April 23rd, the Public Ministry arrested the former president of the 48 cantons,
05:22who led the road blockades in defense of the electoral results.
05:26On the other hand, the civil society organizations declared a permanent assembly in support of the indigenous authorities,
05:34in the face of the criminalization by the Public Prosecutor's Office,
05:38an urge to rescue the rule of law in the nation.
05:45In Colombia, the evidentiary phase in the trial against former President Álvaro Uribe moves forward.
05:53Uribe faces charges of bribery of witnesses and procedural fraud.
05:57After the end of the sessions corresponding to the witnesses,
06:00statements were collected from former paramilitarists linking Uribe to the emergence of armed groups.
06:07In addition, an analysis was made of a wiretap of the former president in 2018,
06:13which shows the attempts of lawyer Diego Cadena to obtain testimonies through blackmail in favor of Uribe.
06:20During this Monday's trial, Álvaro Uribe appears as a witness and in person.
06:30And now we have a short break coming up, but first remember you can join us on TikTok
06:34at Telesur English, where you will find news in different formats, news updates and more.
06:38We'll be right back, stay with us.
06:50Welcome back to From the South.
06:52On Monday, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum stated that her US counterpart Donald Trump
06:57proposed sending US troops to Mexico.
07:00The Mexican President avoided responding to recent statements by President Trump,
07:04alleging a supposed fear on the part of the Mexican head of state of the cartels in the country.
07:10Sheinbaum also highlighted the good relations with the US government,
07:14pointing out that she prefers dated communications and not through other means.
07:19Sheinbaum indicated that in the three months of Donald Trump's administration,
07:23they have shared at least five telephone calls.
07:32What I said on Saturday is that, in fact, in a phone call, rather than as a warning,
07:38as the Wall Street Journal presented it, President Trump said,
07:42we want to help Mexico and to help Mexico we want to send them, among other things, troops, if they need it.
07:49And I told him, no, President, we can collaborate in many other things, within the framework of our sovereignty,
07:57and the territoriality that corresponds to each one of us.
08:01Moreover, the Mexican President said that she supports President Trump's statements on stopping arms trafficking from the United States to Mexico.
08:16That has never been heard before from a President of the United States,
08:19and it is important for Mexico to stop arms trafficking just as we are working very hard to reduce and stop the trafficking of fentanyl from Mexico to the United States and other drugs.
08:33So, there is also a very good relationship between the Northern Command, the Secretary of the Navy, the Secretary of Defense,
08:39there is a very good relationship between Secretary Edward and the Secretary of Commerce of the United States,
08:46between the Mexican Finance Secretary and the U.S. Secretary of the Treasury.
08:50So, it is not worth it and it is not a matter, you know that, we are here with a security strategy that you are going to see on Thursday that has very good results.
09:02The U.S. company Chevron warned of the risk it would pose to the United States if it abandons Venezuela.
09:08The company's presidency assured that if the company stopped its operations in the South American country,
09:14energy security and the growing influence of China could affect U.S. interests.
09:19Chevron, which is only allowed to export Venezuelan oil to the United States,
09:24has been under pressure from Donald Trump's administration to stop extractions in the Bolivarian nation.
09:30According to the oil company, the refineries on the Gulf Coast of Mexico are designed for this specific type of oil
09:37extracted from Venezuela, so it is very important for Washington's energy security.
09:44The Brazilian government expands the More Doctors Health Programme to 3,174 new positions,
09:55which will provide healthcare to more than 63 million Brazilians.
10:00The Ministry of Health said that of this new post, at least 3,066 will be distributed in 1,620 municipalities
10:09and the rest in 26 special health districts for the indigenous population, especially in remote and socially vulnerable areas.
10:17The More Doctors Programme is aimed at strengthening primary healthcare and specialized care of the single health system,
10:24which is one of the main plans of the national government administration,
10:28and contributes to the training of doctors specializing in family and community medicine,
10:34master's degrees, and doctorates in family health.
10:41In Brazil, the Christ, the Redimir, was illuminated with an image of Pope Francis paying tribute
10:47at the close of the traditional nine-day liturgical mourning period following the death of a Pope.
10:53To mark the moment, the sanctuary projected two of Francis' most powerful messages onto the iconic monument,
11:00Todos, Todos, Todos, a call for universal inclusion, he said during World Youth Day in Lisbon in 2023,
11:09and peace is possible from his final Easter address, underscoring his commitment to global peace.
11:15Meanwhile, preparations are underway for the Papal Conclave, set to begin later on Wednesday 7th.
11:22Representing 71 nations, this will be the most geographically diverse conclave in the Church's history.
11:29The Vatican authorities are finalized in preparations for the celebration of the conclave in the Sistine Chapel,
11:39where the 133 cardinals will gather to elect the new pontiff on May 7th.
11:44The Holy See has announced that two bonfires and a chimney have been set up at the site
11:50to emit the white smoke that signals the appointment of the successor of the late Pope Francis.
11:56Until an agreement is reached, the black smoke will continue to be emitted.
12:01The test will consist of four-day daily votes, two in the morning and two in the afternoon.
12:07If necessary, a direct and obligatory second ballot will be held between the two cardinals,
12:12who received the most votes in the previous ballot.
12:15In all cases, a two-thirds majority will be required.
12:22What I'm doing is looking, listening, seeing people coming from Mongolia, working in the Curia,
12:32who are with the poorest people in Latin America, in Africa.
12:36This is very beautiful. It's a richness and for this I think it is us all good, believers and non-believers.
12:44This I think is also the legacy of 2,000 years of ecclesial life and also the legacy of Pope Francis.
12:52Everyone is among us, I don't know who it is he doesn't know himself, but there's the future Pope, and he will hear all of this.
13:02And it's from this richness that he will nourish himself and I hope that afterwards we will be able to be for him a true college of brother cardinals.
13:10We have a second solid break coming up, but before we invite you to visit our Facebook page Artelacer English,

13:40Welcome back to From the South.
14:08In Yemen, an attack perpetrated by the United States and Israel killed two civilians in the west of the country.
14:15The Ministry of Health also detailed that more than 40 civilians were wounded as a result of the U.S.-Israeli aggression in the port city of Hodeidah.
14:24Following the attack, the Yemeni Armed Forces reported that they would consider expanding the list of targets for possible attacks in Israel
14:32in response to the aggressions of Tel Aviv and its allies.
14:36For their part, the Zionist regime forces argued that the attack was in response to the latest offensives by the Ansarola movement in defense of the Palestinian people.
14:45In Iraq, a massive sandstorm swept through the city of Baghdad and surrounding areas on Monday, triggering urgent warnings from traffic authorities due to low visibility.
15:00The methodological event was attributed to a seasonal transition pattern caused by shifting wind directions across the Arabian Peninsula.
15:19In this scenario, authorities warned of diminished visibility, urging drivers to exercise caution.
15:26The storm reportedly caused delays in opening hours for schools in several districts.
15:32This type of phenomena have become more frequent and severe in recent years, as environmental researchers warned that unless major reforestation and land restoration initiatives are implemented,
15:44Iraq could witness up to 300 dust storms annually in the coming decades.
15:51In Jordan, flash floods triggered by heavy rain caused the deaths of two Belgian tourists on Monday in Petra.
16:02Authorities had evacuated the majority of the close to 1,800 tourists visiting the Asian city on Sunday as a precautionary measure to ensure their safety.
16:12The Belgian woman and her three children went missing while being part of a group on an unguided trip.
16:19According to a statement from the General Security Directorate, rescuers retrieved the bodies of the mother and one of her sons,
16:26about 125 miles south of a man in the Schubach region, while the two other children were found in good health.
16:34The area witnessed increasing rains and storms, which scientists climbed more frequently around the world due to climate change.
16:47The United Nations honored the victims of the atomic bombs of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on Monday during a ceremonial tree planting in the United Nations Staff Garden.
16:57The tree planting is a symbol of peace and resilience. It also marks the 80th anniversary of the United Nations.
17:04Let's listen to the statements of some of the organization's high ranking officials.
17:09It is very difficult to really imagine and understand what happened in Hiroshima and Nagasaki 80 years ago.
17:18But I think what we all need to remember is that we can make peace and build peace if we are together.
17:28And as you can imagine, the United Nations is a place where people and countries come together and work together to make that objective a reality.
17:40I hope as these sufferings grow, so too will our aspirations for peace spread and become a reality.
17:51At the ongoing NPT prep comp, Japanese Foreign Minister Iwaya Takeshi spoke at the general debate last week and called on state parties to, quote,
18:04cherish and exercise the spirit of dialogue and collaboration, unquote.
18:10I sincerely hope that hibakujumoku today we will plant or atomic bomb survivor trees planted here will stand as a symbol of this spirit.
18:28Today, more than ever, however, many around the world are worried about the persistence and scale of conflicts, including the deepening poverty and underdevelopment and the deterioration of the world being and dignity of many around the world.
18:43More is therefore required of us in addressing these concerns and meeting the expectations of the peoples of the world as we celebrate the 80th anniversary of the United Nations.
18:54The disarmament agenda and the need to prevent the catastrophic effects of a nuclear war cannot be left out of such an effort.
19:09In other news, the Ministry of Health of the Russian Republic of Tajistan has announced the deaths of three people after a shooting in a town in the Russian Caucasus.
19:17Health authorities also reported that at least five people were wounded after several armed men attacked a traffic police unit in the capital of Tajistan.
19:26They also detailed that the perpetrators of the shooting fled in a vehicle and an interception plan was executed to find and arrest the attackers who have already been neutralized.
19:36The authorities are continuing the operational search in the area and are looking for information about the victims.
19:48Australia's Prime Minister Anthony Albanese gave his first speech on Monday after being re-elected on Saturday's polls.
19:55The leader of the central-left Labour Party vowed to continue working and not take the people's vote of confidence for granted.
20:08We are deeply humbled by the result on Saturday and we don't take a second of it for granted.
20:18The hard work will continue today.
20:21My government has been an orderly government.
20:23We have worked hard.
20:25We have had effective ministers but also an effective caucus.
20:31We have engaged in a way that is clear, that is forward-looking.
20:36That made not just a case that we had been a good government in getting inflation down, wages up, interest rates starting to fall, employment growing.
20:48We also had an effective offer going forward as well, that resonated with people, that we developed in consultation with people.
21:01And like this we have come to the end of this news brief but you can find this and many of the stories on our website at telesurenglish.net and join us on social media as well.
