00:00I had a stronger stream.
00:25What?
00:27My stream was stronger.
00:30Maybe I don't have to see this guy.
00:32Pardon me.
00:34Andy, look, you had problems for a week, right?
00:36Go see a doctor. Find out what's going on here.
00:38Hey, my age, you get a pinging for every bad thought you ever had.
00:43I can't run to the doctor every minute.
00:45When's the last time you've been to the doctor, when you got shot?
00:48I haven't had a finger up my ass since longer than that,
00:51which is exactly how this guy's going to examine my prostate.
00:54Here you go.
00:55Excuse me, are you writing a book?
00:58I'm sorry?
00:58No, because you seem extremely interested in our conversation.
01:02Detective, I haven't heard a word you were saying.
01:04Uh, hey, Andy, you and Bobby got a shooting, third and 12th.
01:10Come on.
01:12Here you go, Joe.
01:2410-13, officer shot.
01:26Officer shot.
01:28Look at the cop shot near that shooting on 3rd Avenue.
01:31You get the hell out of the street.
01:56Councilman Paul Manos, there's a woman in there bleeding to death.
02:00I thought our crime scene's a couple blocks down.
02:02I called 911.
02:03Cop cars keep passing by.
02:05All right, all right, all right.
02:05This woman's been shot, for God's sake.
02:07I got this.
02:08All right, I got this.
02:10Are you around the corner?
02:11Yeah.
02:12City Councilman Paul Manos.
02:14Yeah, I heard.
02:15I just came in, shot, and ran away.
02:17I got a carry permit, but I didn't want to endanger anybody with a crossfire.
02:21Put that away.
02:30Help me!
02:31Can't you see I've just been shot?
02:33Ma'am, ma'am.
02:35Somebody help me!
02:36Ma'am, ma'am, come on.
02:37It's okay, come on.
02:38Come on, don't worry with me.
02:38We'll sit by the car, wait for the ambulance to come, all right?
02:41It hurts!
02:42Oh, my God, am I going to die?
02:44No, I'm not going to let that happen.
02:46Here, look, look, look, here comes the ambulance.
02:47Everything's going to be fine.
02:49Am I going to be fine?
02:50It's going to be fine.
02:51Can you tell me what happened here?
02:51I don't know what happened.
02:53I don't know what happened.
02:53All right, all right.
02:54Here's the guys from the ambulance, all right?
02:55You guys got her?
02:56Yeah, come on.
02:57Come here.
02:58Come here.
02:58Come here.
03:03Get down!
03:04Get down!
03:05Get those away inside of here!
03:08Is anybody here?
03:11What do we got?
03:12Radio cars chased him in the garage.
03:15He opened fire on him, hit a couple of our guys.
03:18We returned fire.
03:19We had him pinned down inside.
03:20Where the hell is he now?
03:21Who's coming out?
03:22We don't know.
03:23Come on, clear him out!
03:24He is.
03:24He's going to need him to put him out.
03:27I'm going to need someone inside here.
03:28Let's get by.
03:29Let's get by.
03:30I'm going to need somebody inside.
03:31We're not going to need somebody inside.
03:33Let's get by.
06:36Hey.
06:38What do we got?
06:40Anna Pena, waitress, 35 years old.
06:43Around 11.15, a white male walks in, puts a gun to her chest, and fires one shot, walks out, not a word spoke.
06:50Anybody ID the guy?
06:51Nobody knew him.
06:53Coworkers said she's got a husband.
06:56I found her address on a phone bell in her purse.
06:59I sent a uniform to pick him up.
07:01Any showcases?
07:03Nine millimeter.
07:04Steel, not brass, which is unusual.
07:07This guy would be the same guy.
07:08We're picking up steel casings all up and down the sidewalk.
07:11What's the start of the inside here?
07:13Third Avenue's a battlefield.
07:14Four cops down, three civilians.
07:16Purps got away?
07:17Yeah.
07:18Owner of the place is Colombian.
07:21Off the bat, you gotta think drugs.
07:23Yeah, a rough way to take care of business.
07:25Yeah.
07:25We got two blocks of chaos out there.
07:28All right.
07:28Anybody who saw anything, get him into the house.
07:31This woman's life could have been saved.
07:44I'm going to find out why.
07:46From the time I called 911, it took 25 minutes for help to arrive.
07:51I want to know why.
07:53I told that clown, go straight to the station.
07:56He's a politician, man.
07:58He can't help himself.
07:59I'm going to find out.
08:00Hey, excuse me.
08:15He didn't know a damn thing about handling firearms, I'll tell you that.
08:19Put two cops in the hospital, he must have knew something about what the hell he was doing.
08:23No, man.
08:24If you shoot me, hit a target, you got to have a two-handed grip.
08:27None of this.
08:28Hey, guys, don't talk to each other about what you saw.
08:31Wait till you sit down with a detective, all right?
08:35Excuse me.
08:37Yeah?
08:38I'm city councilman Paul Manos.
08:40I'm here to give my statement.
08:41Just wait here, sir.
08:42Somebody will be out to talk with you.
08:45Julie Rojas?
08:47Come with me, please.
08:48Here you go.
09:00Thanks a lot.
09:01Yeah.
09:03You gave him my weapon for ballistics, huh?
09:06Yeah.
09:08Every cop would discharge it around, just so we could figure out who did what out there.
09:11I should have put that guy down.
09:13I should have put him down.
09:15It's not so easy when you're under fire.
09:18I don't even think I hit him once.
09:20Look, Officer McCone, right now we've got to concentrate on finding this guy, right?
09:25Now, most people out there on 3rd Avenue once they started hearing gunshots are either ducking inside someplace or they're underground.
09:32If you can do any better here on your description, man.
09:40We're white male.
09:43How old do you figure?
09:44See, I never got a clean look at his face.
09:50I was coming up behind him.
09:52Mm-hmm.
09:54Well, what color hair then?
09:57Kind of blondish, like I said.
10:01His height, his build.
10:04You said average.
10:06Detective.
10:09The guy's walking with the gun raised up.
10:12And then he starts firing.
10:14I understand.
10:15The only clear thing in my mind is that gun.
10:29Excuse me.
10:32Hey, Arthur.
10:33Hey, Dick.
10:35How you doing?
10:36Come on in.
10:37You got a madhouse on your hands, huh?
10:40Yeah, something like that.
10:41So, what's up?
10:43Uh, I know you probably want the kid to fend for himself, but, um, just so you know, your brother got himself jammed with his sergeant.
10:52Jammed how?
10:53They had a blow up yesterday in the squad.
10:56I don't know the particulars, but McNamara may be looking to hurt him now.
11:00And from what I do here, Reggie might have it coming.
11:02But you don't know the particulars.
11:04Look, I don't want to see McNamara jammed up either with this thing.
11:07You guys know each other, right?
11:10Yeah, we went through the academy together.
11:12That's a good thing.
11:13Maybe you two could talk her through.
11:15Yeah.
11:15Yeah, maybe.
11:17Arthur, I hate to come and distract you with all you got going here, but I get the feeling if this thing escalates, it might ripple through the whole precinct.
11:24Wouldn't be good for anybody.
11:26Okay, Dick.
11:27I'll look into it.
11:29Thanks for stopping down, okay?
11:30It's okay.
11:31I had to go to the borough anyway.
11:34I'll see you.
11:42You didn't see the government at all?
11:45No.
11:47Sit down.
11:49And you have no idea why somebody would want to harm Miss Pena?
11:55Not at all.
11:56She's a lovely person.
11:58How long she worked for you?
11:59Four months.
12:00Honestly, I didn't need her.
12:02I heard her because of her husband.
12:04I'm a fan of his.
12:05Husband?
12:06That'd be, uh, Javier Pena?
12:10He plays trumpet, jazz.
12:13He's very, very good.
12:15While he makes himself known around New York, I give his wife work three days a week.
12:19Uh-huh.
12:21Tell me.
12:22You thought it was a possibility.
12:25Maybe this thing was directed at you, Mr. Belisario.
12:30I'm sorry, what?
12:32Maybe somebody was trying to get at you.
12:35Make trouble in your life.
12:38By murdering a waitress?
12:40How'd you come to a thought like that?
12:42Well, Belisario, you know, restaurant business, you know, maybe you got enemies.
12:47I see.
12:53How long you been in business there?
12:56A strange man.
12:59White man.
13:01Walks into my place.
13:02Shoots on a Pena.
13:04Goes out.
13:04Shoots more people.
13:06Shoots police.
13:07How is this about how long have I been in business?
13:10Hey, Mr. Belisario, if I want to delve into your business, if I want to talk to everybody
13:15you ever served a bowl of beans, I will do that.
13:18Because all that which went down today started at Belisario's, and you are point A.
13:24And I'm Colombian, so I must be in the drug business.
13:27That's where we're going, right, detective?
13:29Being honest, Mr. Belisario, I can't remember the last time I dealt with Colombians on a
13:35police matter that drugs weren't involved.
13:40Have a nice day.
13:42What time is your doctor's appointment?
14:08I got all these interviews.
14:09I can't get over there.
14:10I put in a call to narcotics on their restaurant owner.
14:16Yeah?
14:16Yeah?
14:17Yeah?
14:18His brother took one collar for possession.
14:23I'm going to talk to that loud mouth counselor.
14:30I got to go to the doctor.
14:33Mm-hmm.
14:36You know, you're losing an hour of shift in the job.
14:40Here you go.
14:46Thanks.
14:49All right.
14:50If this is the speed you guys operate at, I can understand why that waitress bled to death.
14:56Sorry to hold you up there, councilman.
14:58We're taking people in turn.
14:59That is what I heard you said before, isn't it?
15:04You hope no one got preferential treatment.
15:07I want your DD5s to reflect.
15:11I phoned in that 911.
15:13Yeah, I'll make sure that gets in there.
15:15With the shooter still at large, right now we're focusing on physical description.
15:23Anything you might have seen him do or heard this guy say?
15:26White.
15:28Average height, about 5'10".
15:29That's what everyone's saying.
15:31Did you get a look at his face?
15:33I didn't really know.
15:36Well, searching your recollection then, could he have muttered anything?
15:40Done anything peculiar?
15:42All I can give you is he was wearing faded blue jeans, unraveling at the cuffs with dirty white Converse sneakers.
15:53Got a pretty good look from the ankles down.
15:55Surprising what details stick in the mind.
16:00Mm-hmm.
16:03I've got to get back to my office.
16:06Could you have been under the table, councilman?
16:11Is that why you happened to notice the shooter's feet?
16:15What kind of smart-ass question is that?
16:18We are just trying to situate everyone in the restaurant, sir.
16:25On the DD-5s, I'll note that you were on the floor.
16:49Lieutenant?
16:51Hey, Reggie.
16:55How you been, man?
17:00I've been getting along.
17:01How about you?
17:02I'm good.
17:06You need to come over and see your new nephew.
17:12Yeah, I've been meaning to do that.
17:16So, anything you need to talk about?
17:20Hey, you summoned me, remember?
17:22All right, then.
17:25I hear you in a jam with your sergeant.
17:28Well, it's nothing I can't handle.
17:30What, you got somebody downtown looking over my shoulder?
17:33What happened?
17:34Don't concern you, Arthur.
17:35It does concern me.
17:36I'm your brother.
17:40Well, he told me to change a tire.
17:44Four white cops standing around and my black ass.
17:49And McNamara talks to me like I'm some damn field hang.
17:51So, you call him a red-faced donkey, son of a bitch?
17:55He was looking to piss me off.
17:57And you went right for it.
17:59Look, man.
18:00McNamara's got a problem with black police, bottom line.
18:03Now, I don't care what you had to do to get where you're at.
18:05I got too much integrity to have these fools talk to me any kind of way.
18:09Look, me and McNamara, we go back a ways.
18:12If you're lucky, he might do me a good turn on this.
18:14Oh, please, man.
18:15I don't need your bowing and shuffling on my behalf.
18:18Hey, Reggie.
18:18Quit being the knucklehead, all right?
18:20Hey, yo, man, I do my job.
18:22If you're saying I got to get talked to like I'm picking cotton
18:24for the privilege of keeping on with it,
18:27nah, man, hell no.
18:28I ain't with that.
18:29Meaning you're willing to lead the force over this?
18:31Meaning I am not kissing any ass to stay on it.
18:35So you want me to stay out of it?
18:36I don't know, bro.
18:38Is that in your nature?
18:41Look, just stay clear, McNamara.
18:43Tell I had a chance to sit down with him.
18:45Am I dismissed?
18:55Yeah, Reggie, you're dismissed.
18:57Well, now, nasty scars.
19:19I had an action and a work.
19:22Bear down.
19:22Oh, boy.
19:25Try not to pull away.
19:27It just takes me longer.
19:29What, are you pitching a tent up there?
19:31Just another second.
19:34All right.
19:35You can stand up.
19:36What makes you think so?
19:39Because of your age, I'm going to run a PSA test.
19:42I felt no nodules or hard spots.
19:45I have no suspicion of a tumor.
19:47What you've got is a prostatitis.
19:50What am I going to do about that?
19:52You're going to give me another urine sample,
19:54and then you're going to take a medicine called cyperfloxin for the month.
19:58And then you're going to be fine.
20:00I, uh, I've been abstaining on sex.
20:05No reason to.
20:06If anything, sex in moderation tends to relieve your condition.
20:10When you finish this medicine, I want to see you for a follow-up appointment.
20:14Yeah, I'll circle that on my calendar with a big, happy face.
20:26Okay.
20:27You got a good look at the shooter?
20:29I was right there when he shot that Spanish guy.
20:33Spanish man said something.
20:35I couldn't hear what.
20:37And then, bam.
20:38And from the look on his face, man, it meant nothing to him.
20:43He just went on his way.
20:45Uh, can you describe him?
20:47Yeah, he's five foot ten, if that.
20:50Uh, medium build.
20:52Call it 170 pounds.
20:54His hair was sandy brown.
20:56Uh, not well-kempt.
20:58Fairly long.
21:00He has a pale, angular face.
21:03Kind of a haunted look to it.
21:07I, I'd put him early to mid-thirties.
21:11Let's see, uh, thin lips, small nose.
21:16You sure about all this?
21:18Hey, he passed right in front of me.
21:20Besides, I make a habit of studying people.
21:23Something I like to do.
21:25Hundreds of people a day.
21:27I won't soon be forgetting this one.
21:30This is very good.
21:31Anything to help?
21:33Yeah, um, I want to put you with a police on.
21:37It's fine, fine.
21:39Then you can help me.
21:41I, I, I help you.
21:42You help me.
21:43Yeah, sure.
21:43What, do you want a few dollars, something like that?
21:45Oh, no, no.
21:46I, I, I want you to help me warn people.
21:52Concerning what?
21:52I, I must warn mankind as to the identity of the wicked son of perdition, the beast.
22:02I know who he is.
22:04Oh, boy.
22:05Hey, open your mind to this, all right?
22:08Open your mind to my knowledge.
22:10I have all knowledge going back 236 trillion years.
22:15Let me show you what I'm talking about this is.
22:17I want, I want to show you.
22:19Come here.
22:19Come here.
22:20Listen to me.
22:21Listen to me.
22:23I don't want to know about the trillion years, and I don't want to know about the son of perdition.
22:29I want to know if you saw the guy.
22:32Yeah, I saw him.
22:35Can I use that description?
22:37People's lives may be at stake.
22:40You can use it.
22:42He looked just like what I said.
22:47Yeah?
22:48Yeah.
22:49The shooter entered Belisario's at 845.
22:58He fired one round into Anna Pena, killing her.
23:02Then walked out of the restaurant and moved north of 3rd Avenue.
23:06300 feet from the restaurant, he shot a pedestrian named David Castaneda in the chest.
23:12Castaneda was DOA at the hospital.
23:14The shot that killed Castaneda was heard by an officer, Pacone, who called it in and began pursuit on foot.
23:21Well, was Pacone able to take the guy out at that point before the guy started shooting again?
23:26The officer says he was concerned about discharging his weapon on a busy sidewalk.
23:30Is he under the impression that the perp shared his concern?
23:33The shooter fires on Pacone at this point in the street, at which point Officer Pacone returns fire.
23:39Missing the shooter.
23:40Patrolman Evans and Byrne arrive in a radio car at this point and join in the exchange of fire.
23:47Both patrolmen in the radio car are struck and wounded.
23:50And a British tourist son, an Amelia Rose, who's stable at Bellevue but didn't get a look at the perp.
23:57Also in this exchange, a 60-year-old female in a grocery store was struck in the head by a stray.
24:03She was also DOA.
24:04According to Ballistics, the stray was a police round.
24:08We don't know yet which officer.
24:09Probably that sorry-ass rookie.
24:11We got no idea what the perp is, what his problem was, racial, what, anything?
24:16Not yet.
24:18Yeah.
24:22Detective Metaboy got a full description from a vagrant.
24:25It squares with our parcels, but it's much more detailed and complete.
24:31We've made a sketch that, as you can see...
24:33Do you want to go into TV stations?
24:35Everywhere, including psychiatric facilities, on the chance he's been under care.
24:40As you know, there can be confidentiality problems in that area.
24:44Oh, yeah.
24:45Confidentiality is more important than a few dead citizens.
24:48Where do we stand on the stink about EMS response time?
24:51That was Councilman Manos, Captain.
24:53I think he's going to be leaving that issue alone.
24:56Well, the media's already got it.
24:58I mean, did we bypass the dying wages to get to wounded cops?
25:02We're looking into the 911 call.
25:05We're also looking into how he escaped from the garage.
25:08Looks like he made it out over the roof.
25:10Which is worth letting the guy get away or not nailing him before he got in the garage?
25:15All right, I want you to cut two detectives loose.
25:18Send him back down there.
25:20Inspector, my first priority's got to be getting this guy identified.
25:23Yeah, I'll get other manpower on the garage.
25:26All right, let's get it done.
25:27Let's get on it.
25:31Captain.
25:35This is lousy timing, but I've got a family problem I need to take care of.
25:41You got a heavy situation right here.
25:43My brother, he's on the job.
25:45He's got some problem with his sergeant.
25:47He's just about to go to paperwork.
25:49I can be back inside two hours.
25:53All right.
25:54I'll run it from here.
25:55I appreciate it.
25:57I'm on a beeper if anything breaks.
25:59How's it going?
26:13What's going on?
26:16Well, we finished the initial canvas.
26:20Greg, you got a pretty good description from a homeless guy.
26:23So we're circulating now.
26:25Hey, Bobby?
26:27Yeah?
26:27I'll be back in a little while.
26:29Run everything through a bass.
26:32Get up.
26:34Want to talk to a detective?
26:37Yes, sir.
26:38Here's my restaurant guy.
26:39Detective Sipowitz?
26:40What's going on, Mr. Belisario?
26:44What's my name?
26:50My name is Belisario.
26:52Have you people been able to contact Javier Pena?
26:55Yeah.
26:59The uniformed cop got no answer at his place, but we'll try again later.
27:03I think you ought to go over there.
27:05I think something might have happened to him, too.
27:07Why do you think that?
27:08He had an audition at a club this morning.
27:11He never showed up.
27:13An audition to play music.
27:14It was important to him.
27:15I got him to the audition.
27:17He wouldn't have missed it without calling me.
27:19All right.
27:19We'll go down there ourselves, Mr. Belisario.
27:21Thanks.
27:21I'd go with you, but I got to go back to my place.
27:24I'm expecting 100 kilos of cocaine.
27:27Be nice.
27:36You all right to take a ride over there?
27:39Yeah.
27:39So, what did it start to say?
27:46Inflamed prostrate.
27:48Can I help that?
27:50Took my mind off for the minute with that exam.
27:55I cannot believe some people do that for pleasure.
27:58I cannot believe some people do that for pleasure.
28:28You're paying your first floor.
28:39We better catch a break here somewhere.
28:42I do not want to go to bed not knowing who it is you're dealing with.
28:45Cops came by here twice, is there?
28:50Somebody's got to be here.
28:59Andy.
29:00Andy, there's feet there.
29:02Feet laid out on the floor.
29:07Who are you?
29:08What do you want?
29:09New York City Police.
29:10Let us in.
29:11What are you buzzing me for?
29:12Police emergency.
29:13Let us in.
29:14What for?
29:15What's going on?
29:15Hey, we won't let us in now.
29:17Come on.
29:21You better be coming down here.
29:22Yeah, we're still clear.
29:24Clear more.
29:24Okay.
29:32Police!
29:37What the hell is this about?
29:42You were right.
29:44Clear.
29:45Clear.
29:45What the hell is wrong with you?
29:53What the hell is wrong with you?
29:56What is this?
29:57You connected to this thing?
29:58Answer me.
29:59No.
30:00What happened in there?
30:01I don't know.
30:02Answer me.
30:03Andy.
30:04Andy, we got steel showcasing there, man.
30:06This is the same guy.
30:07All right.
30:08I don't know.
30:09You got me.
30:10What is this?
30:11You seen the sky around?
30:12I don't recognize him.
30:13Who is this?
30:14We just moved in here last week.
30:16Andy, next door.
30:16Somebody's coming for help.
30:18What?
30:18I'm hearing it through the wall.
30:19A woman's voice is coming for help.
30:21All right.
30:21You take your trusty camera,
30:23and you go back to your apartment,
30:25and you sit there until we come for you.
30:27Okay.
30:28Watch it.
30:29Go.
30:29Go.
30:32Help me.
30:37Andy.
30:38I don't want to put my claw on.
30:41Okay.
30:43Thank you, God.
30:47You all right, ma'am?
30:48Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
30:50Just thank God.
30:51What's clear in here?
30:52Come on.
30:53Let's go sit down.
30:55Let's go sit down.
30:55Let's go sit down.
30:55It's all right.
31:04Can I help you, sir?
31:08Okay.
31:10Get down the phone.
31:10Hey, Mac.
31:14Hey, Ben.
31:15Making my way?
31:18Day like this, all those homicides in your precinct?
31:21Wouldn't think you'd have time to visit another squad.
31:24Well, I went to see if there was a way to smooth out this problem between you and my brother.
31:28Reggie's starting to sweat a little.
31:30Came running to you, did he?
31:31No, he didn't, Mac.
31:33Yeah?
31:33Who brought you into this, then?
31:35Some of the other brothers?
31:37Strong-arm crap don't work with me.
31:39You know me better than that, Mac.
31:41I want to fix this thing if it can't be fixed.
31:45Come here.
31:46I asked young Reggie to do something for me.
31:56He gives me mouth in the middle of the station house.
31:58He knows he reacted wrong.
32:00I got a platoon to run.
32:01I take that disrespect off of no one.
32:03I wouldn't expect you to.
32:05You know what I mean, fancy.
32:07They put you in a position of authority yourself.
32:09Look, Mac, you do me a good turn here, I'd be very grateful.
32:14And I promise, I'll keep on top of him.
32:16Plus, he's running around saying it's some kind of a racial thing.
32:20Hey, you and me always got along, right?
32:23Right.
32:24In the station house, I get along with anybody.
32:26Blacks, women.
32:28Mac, I'm asking you for a favor.
32:31Reggie's got a problem with white bosses.
32:33It's him who's in the wrong line of work.
32:35I don't think he is, Mac.
32:37I like to keep him on the job.
32:39Look, as far as I'm concerned, he keeps his mouth under control.
32:46We don't have a problem.
32:48That's good.
32:49This thing that happened, I guess I'm willing to let it slide.
32:52Okay.
32:53I won't forget that.
32:54But I tell you, he pops off at me again like that.
32:57Never mind the paperwork.
32:59It's going to be me and him, and the badges get set aside.
33:02Okay.
33:03And if I need Reggie Fancy to fix a tire,
33:06he's going to get on his knees and do that.
33:08Yeah, but you won't go out a turn and ask him to fix a tire, right, Mac?
33:13I mean, if it's somebody else's turn, you don't call on Reggie.
33:17No.
33:18Why would I do that?
33:21Just so that's clear.
33:24Sure.
33:26Hey.
33:27Nice seeing you, Fancy.
33:28Yeah.
33:29Hey, you take care of yourself, Mac.
33:42Take a look at this man.
33:43Oh, yeah.
33:44That's definitely him.
33:46Steven Capers.
33:47I suppose I should recognize him.
33:49Uh-huh.
33:50Living next to him for five years.
33:52Yeah.
33:52Up until a few months ago.
33:54I liked him well enough, but he was a troubled young man.
33:57How could you tell that?
33:59He muttered to himself.
34:00More and more as time went on.
34:03Eh.
34:03Talked to me more than anybody else, I suppose.
34:06But it was just neighbor chatter.
34:08You know when we'd run into each other in the hall?
34:11Hi, Mrs. Eubanks.
34:12And I'd say, hi, Steven.
34:13How are you?
34:14And then we'd talk a bit.
34:16You never had any problems with him?
34:17Nah.
34:18Yeah, but in recent weeks, since he's been evicted, I've been seeing him outside, standing
34:23around with a strange look on his face, even when I'd pass.
34:27I mentioned it a few times to Mr. Bernstein.
34:30It's the landlord.
34:31We're trying to get in touch with him.
34:32Yeah, I think he's out of town.
34:34This, uh, Steven Capers.
34:36Did he ever have any words with the people that took over his old place?
34:40I don't think so.
34:41Well, not that I'm aware of.
34:43But I do know that he was on disability of some sort.
34:46And, uh, he lost his benefits recently.
34:50He was upset.
34:51So you did see him this morning, though?
34:53Yeah, standing across the street.
34:55But that wasn't unusual.
34:57About nine o'clock, I heard this loud noise next door.
35:01You know, like a gunshot.
35:02So I peeked out the door, and I saw Steven.
35:05And he's holding a pistol.
35:07And he backed me into my apartment.
35:10So flabby, yesterday I couldn't say a word.
35:13And he says, get in the closet, Mrs. Eubanks.
35:15He could have killed me easily.
35:18He must have liked you.
35:19Pays to be neighborly, I guess.
35:25Uh, this is Detective Bally.
35:26Hey.
35:32Sergeant said we got another body and an ID on the perk.
35:36New DOA is the husband of the waitress that got shot at the restaurant.
35:40Simone and Sipawitz found him in the apartment when they went to make notification.
35:45Perk barricaded the woman in the next apartment in her closet.
35:49Simone and Sipawitz heard her pounding.
35:52They got her an interview warning.
35:53So what'd she say about the perk?
35:55She said he used to live in the apartment where they found a new DOA.
35:59They're getting the details now.
36:01So all hell broke loose while I was gone.
36:03We all got family, Lieutenant.
36:06I heard we got a witness and an ID.
36:08Is that right?
36:08Um, yeah.
36:10Uh, Lieutenant Fancy was just bringing me up to speed.
36:12Good.
36:14Yeah.
36:14You got a minute for me, Detective?
36:25Sure.
36:26How's it going?
36:27I wrote up a statement.
36:29When I talked to Detective Simone earlier, I couldn't really get my thoughts together.
36:33That was verbal, though, right?
36:34You, uh, interviewed with Detective Simone?
36:37Yeah.
36:37You, uh, gave him what you knew in terms of looking for the guy?
36:41Right.
36:41Because, uh, I don't think you want to make a written statement at this point until you talk to your delegate.
36:46All right.
36:47In terms of waiting to discharge your weapon and so forth.
36:50Well, it looks like I didn't hit anybody.
36:52Uh-huh.
36:53I mean, I hope to hell I didn't hit anybody because I know I didn't hit the perp.
36:58I know they're testing on the guns.
37:00I mean, I'd hate like hell to think that I hit a civilian.
37:03It's bad enough to miss the guy.
37:05You did your best out there.
37:07Anyways, I, uh, trashed a written statement for now.
37:12All right?
37:12Yeah.
37:15Okay.
37:17Thanks for the advice, Detective.
37:19Anytime.
37:34Hi, Eddie.
37:35Hi, Eddie.
37:37Hi.
37:39Got Thai food in the fridge.
37:42Lemongrass soup.
37:44Yeah, that sounds great.
37:48Heard you guys find another victim connected with a street shooter?
37:52Yeah.
37:53I like a guy in the homicides.
37:55Some head case from the apartment building where two of the victims lived.
38:01What's that?
38:01I, uh, went to the doctor today.
38:10What, what?
38:12Turns out I got an inflamed prostrate.
38:15Gave him this medicine, said it's nothing to worry about.
38:20Okay.
38:20Yeah, actually, he, uh, he gave me, he gave me the okay in the area of relations, which I've been concerned about.
38:31You had.
38:32Like you hadn't noticed.
38:35No, I noticed that we weren't having relations.
38:42I didn't think that it was for medical reasons.
38:46No.
38:50What did you think?
38:52Because of finding out about that incident?
38:55Where the guy attacked you?
38:58Yeah.
38:59No, it was this other thing.
39:04Well, I wish you'd told me.
39:06What am I going to tell you about, Sylvia?
39:09I'm peeing in two different directions.
39:11I'm falling apart in all my systems.
39:19Andy, we're going to grow old together.
39:22And what's going to happen to our bodies will happen.
39:27But let's always talk.
39:30So we don't misunderstand each other.
39:34Okay.
39:36It's a deal.
39:40And this with my prostrate, uh, he says it's completely correctable.
39:47Good.
39:49He says this medicine's good.
39:52He also said, uh, relations were good.
39:59We'll have some soup.
40:02And I'll try a treatment.
40:22Good morning, detective.
40:28How's it going?
40:28Detective, could I talk to you for just a minute?
40:34I just want to assure you, in regard to your concerns yesterday, I would never eavesdrop on a conversation.
40:41I tell you, I, uh, I was having a medical problem yesterday.
40:44Maybe I overreacted.
40:46We work in such proximity here.
40:49Trust is very important.
40:51I was having prostrate difficulties, but I think I'm on a mend.
40:56I'm glad.
40:57Have I been mispronouncing that word all these years?
41:01I always thought it was prostate.
41:03No, it's prostrate.
41:05Oh.
41:06I'm Harry Bernstein.
41:07I'm looking for Detective Simone or Sipowicz.
41:10I'm Detective Sipowicz.
41:12You the landlord of that building on 2nd Avenue?
41:14Yeah.
41:15Come on in.
41:15I got your messages off my machine.
41:20This dead guy, wow.
41:23That should give you some indication how my luck was going.
41:27So you were out of town, huh?
41:29Yeah, I was in Atlantic City.
41:31Detective Simone is Harry Bernstein.
41:33He owns that building.
41:34How's it going, Miss Bernstein?
41:36Some horror story at my place.
41:38I understand you're looking for Stephen Capers.
41:42Yeah, that's right.
41:42You know, when he came to my place, this guy was a graduate student at NYU.
41:47No kidding.
41:48All that deep thinking.
41:50He must have blown a gasket, because by the time I had to evict him, he was a total friggin' nutbar.
41:55We're looking to find this guy, Mr. Bernstein.
41:59He started in your building.
42:01Now he's shooting people on the street.
42:04I wouldn't know where to tell you to look.
42:06Excuse me, what's up with the notebooks?
42:08He had like hundreds of these in the place there.
42:11He'd written on every page, too.
42:14I got him in a storage room over there.
42:18Out of curiosity, you know, eavesdrop in on an unsound mind.
42:22You ever ask for these back?
42:24No, uh-uh.
42:25So you haven't had any contact with this guy recently?
42:28Not since I kicked him out.
42:30Mrs. Eubanks said she's seen him around.
42:32I guess he had strong feelings about that apartment to go back and kill those people.
42:40I guess.
42:42Anything?
42:43Nothing I can make out so far.
42:45Look, Mr. Bernstein, I want to talk to our boss about these, and then we're going to want to take a ride over to your building.
42:52I'm going to want to see all of these.
42:53Yeah, sure.
42:56Hey, let me ask you.
42:57The city's going to pay to replace the door you guys busted, right?
43:02You got to make a claim with the corporation council.
43:05How old are you playing to live today?
43:08Perfect.
43:08Lou?
43:12Yeah.
43:13We're talking to the landlord of that building.
43:15He give you anything?
43:16The Ferb kept a lot of notebooks, and this guy saved him, so we're going to go pick him up.
43:20Okay.
43:22I got to talk to this kid.
43:24Ballistics came back with his gun.
43:27What, the stray killed a woman in the grocery?
43:29Yeah.
43:29Yeah, that's rough.
43:31All right, I'll let you know about the notebooks.
43:35How you doing, officer, Bill?
43:36Yeah.
43:37Right.
43:38You wanted to see me, lieutenant?
43:41Yeah, come on in.
43:49How you doing?
43:52Pretty bad night.
43:55To tell you the truth, my mind wouldn't sleep.
43:59You understand why I didn't shoot at first, don't you, lieutenant?
44:03Officer McCone, listen to what I'm going to tell you.
44:06This is off the record.
44:07Off the record?
44:09I'm not sure when you'll receive official notification, but I wanted you to know.
44:14A civilian who died during the shootout.
44:16The bullet they took from her, an autopsy, matches up to your weapon.
44:20Oh, man.
44:21Oh, man.
44:23I'm sure there's no criminal problem here, but there will be an investigation into the shooting.
44:29My weapon?
44:30My PBA representation.
44:32Who?
44:32Who was killed, you said her, a woman, the woman in that store?
44:38That's right.
44:41Listen to me.
44:42You should plan on this getting to the press sooner rather than later.
44:46I've seen cops who did exactly the right thing and still got hung up.
44:51Let alone what I did.
44:52Just the magnitude of what happened yesterday.
44:54You need to be ready for media scrutiny.
44:58Oh, my God.
45:00Oh, my God.
45:01Son, your life changed forever when that guy fired that first shot.
45:11You've got to deal with those changes.
45:14And you have to decide whether you ever want to be in that position again.
45:19You think I should quit?
45:23That's not for me to say.
45:26But maybe you should ask yourself, are you doing what you should be doing?
45:31I've wanted to be a cop all my life, all right?
45:34So, so I didn't do the right thing this one time.
45:39This job can do a lot to you emotionally.
45:43And it's just a job.
45:46There's other jobs.
45:49You really believe that, Lieutenant?
45:54The notification will come through your sergeant.
46:01Okay.
46:10Let me ask you.
46:11These notebooks.
46:13I can get them back at some point.
46:15You want them back?
46:16Of course I want them back.
46:17Wait a minute.
46:18All right, I've got to use a cannon here.
46:19Now I can't stop going.
46:21Hey, you're making them for lost time.
46:23The guy's a notorious killer.
46:25Maybe the stuff turns out to be worth something.
46:28I mean, I got a solid claim.
46:30He's in arrears to me for four months' rent.
46:35You're in there.
46:36That's this maniac.
46:56That's this maniac.
46:58You're in there.
46:58You're in there.
46:59You're in there.
46:59You're in there.
47:00You're in there.
47:00You're in there.
47:01You're in there.
47:01You're in there.
47:02You're in there.
47:02You're in there.
47:02You're in there.
47:03You're in there.
47:04You're in there.
47:04You're in there.
47:04You're in there.
47:05You're in there.
47:05You're in there.
47:05You're in there.
47:06You're in there.
47:06You're in there.
47:07You're in there.
47:07You're in there.
47:08You're in there.
47:09You're in there.
47:10You're in there.
47:11You're in there.
47:12You're in there.
47:13You're in there.
47:14You're in there.
47:15You're in there.
47:16You're in there.
47:17Thanks.
47:43How's it going, Reggie?
47:44Hey, I did a four to twelve yesterday.
47:48McNamara treated me okay.
47:51Good.
47:58Did he make you look to shine off his shoes?
48:01He made me lick a little.
48:03I didn't ask you to see him.
48:05No, you weren't stand up enough for that.
48:07You told me to follow my nature.
48:09Look, look, I don't want to ask you, but I know you reached out to that guy and I came to say thanks.
48:18Let's pick you, Reggie.
48:20Now here's some free advice.
48:22Get enough self-respect so when some fool talks to you like a nigger,
48:26you don't go half nuts and jam yourself up needing to prove he isn't right.
48:30You got some funny ideas about self-respect.
48:32My idea is when I hear an ass out in the field braying, I don't feel any deep need to start braying back.
48:40From where you sit, Reggie, I can never do anything right for you.
48:46I don't expect that to change now.
48:48If you and McNamara are trainwrecked, maybe you should transfer out of there.
48:55Maybe I should.
48:57I'll see how it goes.
49:03When can I come check Junior out?
49:08Anytime.
49:10Lily and them new girls want to see you, too.
49:14How about this weekend?
49:16Saturday?
49:16Saturday?
49:18Good.
49:20Maybe Sunday?
49:22Either way.
49:24You okay, Bobby?
49:51Yeah.
49:53Bass already signed off on your weapons discharge report.
49:57Did he make it a good shooting?
49:58Yeah.
49:59He made it a good shooting.
50:02I heard you found a witness that saw this guy run from the garage.
50:07Yeah.
50:08He split over the roof.
50:10I got a tape for that councilman's 911 call.
50:19He's been shot.
50:21Oh, God.
50:22Send an ambulance right now.
50:24A man's been shot.
50:26A man's been shot?
50:27Yes.
50:28Yes.
50:28Yes, just now.
50:28It's happening right now.
50:30Right in front of me.
50:31Oh, God.
50:32Where are you, sir?
50:33I'm city councilman Paul Manos.
50:36No.
50:36Where are you, sir?
50:39Bellisario's at the corner of 3rd Avenue and 10th.
50:41Send help.
50:42Send the police.
50:433rd Avenue and 10th Street?
50:45The guy just walked out of here with the gun.
50:48Send help right now.
50:50I'm sending help, sir.
50:52You said Bellisario's at the corner of 3rd Avenue and 10th Street?
50:56Yes.
50:57Yes.
50:58Who is it that's been shot?
51:00I don't know.
51:00I don't know.
51:01A man's been shot.
51:02Is it just one person?
51:04I think so.
51:07A man's been shot?
51:09From underneath the table.
51:11He didn't see who the hell got shot.
51:13The paramedics arrive.
51:15They see a pedestrian bleeding further down the block.
51:18They think that's the job.
51:25So that's what happened there.
51:29You want to get any trauma treatment on your shooting?
51:33No, I'm all right.
51:39Just got to type this mess up.
51:43Did you put this on my desk?
52:01Oh, yes, detective.
52:02I was looking up something else and I happened to notice that word we had talked about.
52:07Live and learn.
52:08I just thought you might find it interesting.
52:10Oh, absolutely.
52:12This way, if I'm ever on that quiz show Jeopardy and they ask about prostrate, some other idiot's
52:18going to say the gland behind the nuts and I'm going to say, no, no, no, no.
52:23That means to lie face down in a posture of submission.
52:28My old friend, PAA Urban, told me that.
52:32You know, that other civilian aide that we had, all she did was she gave us our messages.
52:36But this guy, he gives us definitions and everything.
52:40I'm sorry, was that inappropriate?
52:46Nah.
52:48I'm just a little chatty.
52:50I almost got murdered earlier.
52:52I was thinking if I could wash your car for a year or something like that.
53:10Yeah, that'd be good.
53:11The other guy, uh, all the jams we were in, had never came up.
53:21Yeah, but I'm sure he was always looking out for you.
53:24Oh, yeah, definitely.
53:28Ass signed off in a shooting?
53:30Yeah.
53:30Because, uh, I'm prepared to nominate it among my all-time favorites.
53:42All right, I'm going to get some lunch.
53:48Want something?
53:49No, I'm good.
53:54Thanks.
53:56Anytime, partner.
