00:00Thank you so much for watching Riff TV.
00:02Now, this interview is obviously with video, but I don't interview everybody on Zoom.
00:07That's why I put it on my Talkin' Rock with Meltdown podcast.
00:10We talk to rock artists from all over the genre.
00:13So check out Talkin' Rock with Meltdown wherever you get your podcasts.
00:16And now, to today's video interview.
00:20Man, look at that room. You're making me jealous, Richard. That looks cool.
00:24It's my dojo.
00:26Is that right?
00:27It's my studio. Yeah, this is where I recorded the last record,
00:30The Algorithm, that comes out August 25th.
00:33Yeah, it's August 25th. We'll get to that here in a few minutes.
00:35You know, you were just talking before we started recording here about the internet and stuff like that.
00:40The first time I ever met you was in 1996.
00:42You came to Detroit right here to WRF.
00:44I have a picture on my wall with you and Brian and myself.
00:48And we did a computer chat room thing.
00:51That was like so long ago.
00:54And it was just at the very infancy of the computer and the internet and stuff.
00:58You got to talk to fans.
00:59And I think we even did it from like a computer store or something like that.
01:02I wasn't even here at the station.
01:04Wow. I completely spaced on that one.
01:07Yeah. I mean, I'm not expecting you to remember that.
01:08But it's just wild to think of where we've been since then.
01:12Yeah. Now it's here we are in the Zoom age.
01:16Yeah.
01:17And you're no...
01:18I've got gray hair.
01:19And you look great, dude.
01:20What are you, like 25 still?
01:21I hide it well, I suppose.
01:23I think I'm actually exactly 10 months younger than you.
01:27Wow.
01:29Yeah. You're doing good, buddy.
01:31Yeah. Thanks, man.
01:32Looking good.
01:33Yeah. So you're no stranger to Detroit.
01:35And I forgot all about this.
01:37But you recorded your guys' first record here, right?
01:39Or did you mix or produce it here?
01:40It was mixed at Pearl Audio, Ben Gross' studio near Farmington Hills, Michigan.
01:47Yeah.
01:47And I actually lived in Farmington Hills, Michigan around 1975, 76.
01:57So I was like six or seven when we left.
01:59Oh, no kidding.
02:00So that's when you went to...
02:01Yeah.
02:02That's when we moved to Cleveland.
02:04Oh, okay.
02:05I didn't know that.
02:05All right.
02:06Yeah.
02:07That Pearl Studio is still up and still recording and stuff.
02:10My friend Chuck Alkazian runs that place now.
02:13Oh, that's great.
02:14But that's really...
02:15Yeah.
02:15We mixed short bus there.
02:17Yeah.
02:18For people that are outside the area, that you wouldn't even know it was a studio.
02:21It's a cinder block square building on the corner of just like...
02:25Out in the middle of nowhere.
02:27Yeah.
02:27I didn't know there was even...
02:28Well, there's all subdivisions around it now.
02:30But outside the subdivisions, there's this building.
02:32I didn't even know what it was for years.
02:34Oh, wow.
02:34Yeah.
02:35It's just...
02:35Yeah.
02:36He likes to...
02:37Ben liked to have kept his buildings like anonymous.
02:40Like, you know, he didn't advertise that he was there because he was worried about, you
02:46know, people breaking in or something like that.
02:49Right.
02:49And even today, he has a studio in Burbank and it's all just completely just...
02:54You would never guess that it was a studio.
02:56Like, it is just...
02:57And people like their anonymity.
02:59Like, when you get people like...
03:01Madonna was there.
03:03No one knew she was there.
03:04You know what I mean?
03:04Like, you know, it's just an empty...
03:07It looks like an empty office building.
03:11Yeah.
03:11Yeah.
03:11It's Madonna's birthday, by the way.
03:1365, another Michigan.
03:14Happy birthday to you.
03:21Anyways, let's talk about you.
03:22Let's talk about Madonna.
03:23The algorithm, like you just mentioned, comes out August 25th.
03:26Now, this record has been in the hopper for quite some time.
03:29It's gone through...
03:30I guess, to coin a phrase, it's gone through a bunch of amalgamations.
03:33There you go.
03:35Yeah.
03:36It started off, I was going to call it Rebus, and it was going to be done entirely by me
03:41and Brian Leeskang, and that fell apart.
03:44And I have four songs from Brian Leeskang that we're using.
03:50Well, two of which already came out.
03:51Thoughts and Prayers in America came out already.
03:54But Summer Child and Command Z are on the algorithm.
03:59And then it was going to be called They Got Us Right Where They Want Us,
04:03at each other's throats, which was way too long.
04:06And I decided to bail on that.
04:09And then I kind of enjoyed the idea of the algorithm.
04:13Like, everybody has a math equation or a problem or something in their life
04:18that they're trying to overcome.
04:20And I figured it was more universal this way.
04:24Yeah.
04:24And of course, that's one of those phrases that's fairly popular nowadays.
04:28Yeah, the algorithm.
04:30Yeah.
04:30It's kind of, it's everywhere.
04:32I was watching that video for Face Down.
04:35That's a fun video to watch.
04:38Yeah.
04:39Yeah.
04:39Face Down.
04:40Taking it really literally and, you know,
04:43just put in a bunch of crazy shots of people face planning.
04:48And that was in that studio right there at your end, right?
04:51Yeah.
04:51It was recorded right here in the studio.
04:54But the video as well.
04:55The video as well.
04:57Absolutely.
04:57Yeah.
04:58Everything.
04:59So when the record comes out,
05:00what do you think people are going to gravitate towards?
05:02What kind of grabs you right away from this album?
05:05I think people are going to like the heaviness.
05:08I mean, you know,
05:09I love music that makes me just want to get up and run
05:13or drive a car really fast or something like that.
05:16But I think people are going to,
05:20they're going to feel like the way they did during Amalgamut
05:24or Title of Record or Short Bus.
05:26It reminds me of the Warner Brothers first three records that we did
05:29on Warner Brothers.
05:31And those are definitely some great years.
05:34So it kind of reminds me of that because I took a real heavy hand in
05:38production.
05:39Like I really,
05:40really,
05:40really made sure that I was happy before anybody.
05:44And for the past 10 years,
05:47I've really relied on producers and songwriters and stuff like that,
05:51which I love.
05:53And I love working with them.
05:54But this year I like bought a computer and like sat there and recorded
06:01everything like on my own.
06:03And with the exception of two or like maybe five songs where I asked for outside
06:11collaboration with Zach Monowitz or Sam Tinez or Mark Jackson and Ian Scott.
06:17But I really did apply myself and kind of I made sure that it sounded like old school filter.
06:28Now,
06:28was that something that you thought about going in or did it just happen to work out that way?
06:33Like,
06:34you know what I'm saying?
06:34Like it's,
06:34it's like when you first started this,
06:37you know,
06:37what now 2017 or whatever it was,
06:39did you want to go back to the roots or did it just kind of go that way?
06:43I think it just naturally kind of went that way.
06:45Cause I'm,
06:46I'm not,
06:46I'm,
06:47I'm not a big like planner of like what I'm going to do.
06:50There's,
06:51you know,
06:52I don't,
06:52I don't like navigate through like,
06:56Oh,
06:56it's getting too much like this or it's getting too much like that.
06:59I stay on target,
07:01stay with the plan.
07:01And I try and go with the flow on the record and see what it wants to be.
07:06And then when I'm done,
07:07like come up with the title and,
07:10and,
07:10and,
07:11and the,
07:11the,
07:12the visuals and everything like that.
07:14So I guess you,
07:15you,
07:16you let the song kind of dictate where it goes.
07:18Exactly.
07:19This,
07:19whatever's best for the song is,
07:21is what's,
07:22what's,
07:22you know,
07:23like there was a chunk of me that wanted to have the record be more industrial.
07:29And,
07:29and I was going to leave,
07:31leave the drum programming like artificial.
07:35But then as I was hanging out with my drummer,
07:39Elias Mullen,
07:40he was just like,
07:41you know,
07:41Rich,
07:42if I took this and I took these 11 songs and I went to a studio and played live
07:47drums,
07:47I think you would like it way better than the program stuff.
07:50And I said,
07:50all right,
07:51let's give it a shot.
07:52So we went to a little studio in Burbank and the,
07:56called stag street and recorded all the drums for 11 songs in a couple of
08:00days.
08:01And I was blown away by how good it sounded.
08:04And yeah,
08:05it,
08:06you know,
08:06it,
08:07it,
08:07it was changed at the last minute.
08:09I mean,
08:09like literally at doing drums is the last thing that you do before you start
08:15mixing it in,
08:16in our band.
08:17And so I,
08:20I,
08:21I,
08:21I'm loosey goosey when it comes to creativity.
08:23I,
08:24I try and,
08:25and,
08:26and accentuate what's weird and what's,
08:29what's interesting about the record and,
08:31and,
08:31and just play it by ear.
08:33Literally.
08:34Right.
08:35Yeah.
08:35Now,
08:35are you,
08:36are you a fan of the electric drum sound or that's just what you're used to
08:40or?
08:40Yeah.
08:40So short boss,
08:42our first record was completely drum machine and samples and stuff like
08:46that.
08:46And then title of record.
08:48I used a drummer.
08:49His name was Steve Gillis.
08:50And then amalgam.
08:51I,
08:52I use Steve Gillis again.
08:53And then for anthems for the damned,
08:56I use Josh freeze.
08:57And then,
08:58um,
08:59the trouble with angels.
09:00It was,
09:01uh,
09:02Mika Finio.
09:03Then for the sun comes out tonight,
09:05it was back to a drum machine.
09:07It was all programmed.
09:08And then crazy eyes was a lot of drum machine,
09:12but a lot of Chris Reeve on drums.
09:14And then for this record,
09:16it's,
09:16uh,
09:17Elias Mullen.
09:18It's funny.
09:19I'm talking to you today.
09:19I just talked to Wolfgang Van Halen yesterday and I just saw ghost the
09:22other night.
09:23And all you guys are kind of like in the same kind of boat where you guys
09:26are really,
09:27truly the captains of everything you do,
09:29as opposed to a band,
09:30like,
09:30I don't know,
09:31like a Metallica or somebody where there were,
09:32there's like four guys that,
09:33that can,
09:33but you're really the guy,
09:35aren't you?
09:35Uh,
09:37yeah,
09:37I,
09:38I was the guy that got,
09:39got the record deal back in 1993 off of demos.
09:44I made pretty much by myself and,
09:47um,
09:48I had some friends around with me,
09:50but,
09:50uh,
09:51I was kind of the,
09:52the king of,
09:53of,
09:53of my world.
09:54And I've just,
09:56I,
09:57I'm just,
09:58you know,
09:58I'm blessed because I'm,
10:00I'm,
10:00I'm free.
10:01I can work with anyone I want.
10:03I can work with on this record.
10:04I worked with Zach Monowitz on guitar.
10:07Uh,
10:07he,
10:07he played,
10:08he wrote three songs with me.
10:09He pretty much came up with these riffs that were amazing.
10:13And,
10:14um,
10:14you know,
10:14I have this freedom,
10:16whereas a band like you too,
10:17it's the four dudes and that's it.
10:19You know what I mean?
10:20And Danielle Lenoit and Brian,
10:23you know,
10:24you know what I mean?
10:25There was a lot of songwriting that Danielle and Lenoit and Brian,
10:28you know,
10:28did for you too,
10:29but essentially it's you too,
10:31you know what I mean?
10:33Or,
10:33you know,
10:34or the clash or,
10:35you know,
10:35other,
10:36the who it's,
10:37it's,
10:37it's the four dudes,
10:39even though Pete Townsend is heavily handed in,
10:42in the music end of it,
10:44it's still considered to be like a band,
10:46like the four dudes.
10:47So,
10:48or the Rolling Stones or something like that.
10:50This is more of like the Richard Patrick show without having the bad title,
10:56the Richard Patrick show.
10:57I mean,
10:57it it's,
10:58I just think it's cooler.
10:59I come from nine inch nails and I learned a lot from Trent and that's just the way I did it.
11:05It was,
11:05it was very similar to the way Trent did it.
11:08Yeah.
11:09I was just going to compare that because obviously it's,
11:11it's very similar.
11:12You just mentioned 1993 when you left nine inch nails,
11:14you really took a huge gamble on yourself.
11:18Didn't you?
11:19It was a ballsy move.
11:22Yeah.
11:22And people were begging me not to leave.
11:26And I just felt at the time that like,
11:31I think I'm just going to be better off if I go and learn how to write and,
11:36and,
11:37and sing and,
11:38and do all that on my own.
11:40And it's better for my life.
11:43It's better for my state of mind.
11:44It was just a scenario where I just literally just felt like I had to express myself and give it a shot.
11:52Yeah.
11:52And you've,
11:53you've talked about this before.
11:54You actually told me this several years ago where Trent at one point said,
11:57yeah,
11:57there's a pizza place,
11:58you know,
11:58looking for drivers if you want to make some extra money or something.
12:01It was,
12:01it was your relationship really shattered at that point.
12:03And yeah,
12:05it was,
12:05you know,
12:06the manager to John mom had said straight up like,
12:10Hey,
12:10there's a pizzeria down the way.
12:12And,
12:12and he,
12:14he,
12:14he,
12:15you know,
12:15it's,
12:16if you're looking for some extra cash while you're here in LA,
12:19while we're working on the record,
12:21you know,
12:21you can be a pizza delivery guy.
12:24And,
12:24you know,
12:24and the thing that stuck out to me was when he said,
12:27but this is a good way to get to know Los Angeles,
12:30you know,
12:31like you'll be able to navigate around and learn Los Angeles.
12:35Cause back then we didn't have computers.
12:37We had Matt,
12:38we had Thompson guide maps that.
12:41So I just was floored and I,
12:44they didn't know it,
12:46but I was talking to Warner brothers and I had a demo of Hey man.
12:49I shot Warner brothers is like,
12:51we'll sign you right now.
12:53You know?
12:53And it was like,
12:55I was like,
12:55okay,
12:56well maybe I'll do that instead of the pizza job,
12:58but it was,
12:59they,
13:00you know,
13:00they just had miscalculated a little bit.
13:03And,
13:03and you know,
13:06they,
13:06I,
13:07it was,
13:07it was,
13:08yeah,
13:08it was,
13:08it was a little weird back then.
13:10You know what I mean?
13:11I got to say.
13:12Now,
13:12by this time you had already like toured and stuff,
13:14right?
13:15So you were like touring and playing out.
13:17I was Piggy.
13:19Yeah.
13:19Yeah.
13:19My nickname,
13:20my nickname was Piggy.
13:21I was the guitar player,
13:23Piggy.
13:23And we did Lala,
13:24we did everything up from 1989 to 1993,
13:28including Lollapalooza.
13:30Yeah.
13:31I was in several of the videos and,
13:33you know,
13:33I was,
13:34I was more of a member than I was a higher gun.
13:37You know what I mean?
13:37But again,
13:38Trent really,
13:40he really held his cards close to him as a songwriter.
13:44And he,
13:45you know,
13:45and rightfully so it's his baby,
13:48you know,
13:48and he,
13:50it was just hard to,
13:53you know,
13:53it was just hard to navigate me wanting to be creative and,
13:58and staying in nine inch nails at the same time.
14:01And that's in a perfect world.
14:02I should have probably done both.
14:04You know what I mean?
14:04I probably should have stayed and I probably should have done filter at the
14:08same time and just,
14:09and just was like,
14:11yeah,
14:11this is also what I'm doing.
14:12But I think Trent deserved a hundred percent of,
14:16of,
14:16of a person.
14:17And,
14:18you know,
14:18look,
14:19look at the great people that came out of it.
14:21Danny Lohner and Robin Fink.
14:23And Robin Fink is an amazing guitar player and he's definitely an upgrade.
14:28And I'm,
14:30and I love Danny and Robin and they had,
14:33they,
14:33they had a chance because I,
14:35you know,
14:36I split,
14:37you know what I mean?
14:37They,
14:37they got an opportunity to be in nine inch nails and,
14:40and so be it.
14:41And they're great.
14:42They're great musicians.
14:43Yeah.
14:44I,
14:44you know,
14:45I've never met Trent or interviewed him or anything like that.
14:47And I don't really,
14:48you know,
14:48obviously I don't know,
14:49but it's like,
14:50if you're doing nine inch nails and doing your own side project,
14:53that seems to me like that might be a little bit of a friction point.
14:56That's just my,
14:57yeah.
14:58And,
14:58and yeah.
15:00And I,
15:01and I figured maybe it would just be better if I was gone.
15:03And I,
15:04I,
15:05I honestly didn't think that it was going to be the,
15:09the huge kind of letdown that,
15:12it turned into.
15:14And,
15:14you know,
15:17I got a phone call from Brian Leeskang who was like,
15:20dude,
15:20Trent's writing songs called piggy,
15:22you know,
15:23he's writing songs about you.
15:25You know what I mean?
15:26And,
15:26and cause Brian had stayed to work on the prick record.
15:30What,
15:30after I left up at the Sharon Tate house.
15:33And,
15:34you know,
15:35I,
15:35I didn't,
15:36I didn't realize I had that much of an impact in nine inch nails.
15:39And I,
15:40I was shocked that I was kind of,
15:42you know,
15:44so missed.
15:45I was kind of like,
15:46well,
15:47where was the love when I was in it?
15:49I mean,
15:49you know what I mean?
15:49Like,
15:50yeah,
15:51for sure.
15:52And so,
15:52so you,
15:53you talked about this several times.
15:54All this is water under the bridge,
15:56right?
15:57Yeah.
15:57All this is water under the bridge.
15:59We,
15:59I,
15:59I have had the greatest time in filter.
16:04I'm still playing shows.
16:06I've been playing shows for 30,
16:0730 years now.
16:08Yeah.
16:09And,
16:10you know,
16:12I put out,
16:12this is my eighth record coming out and I live a beautiful,
16:17wonderful life.
16:17I have a wife and kids and everything is fantastic.
16:21So it totally worked out.
16:23And the best thing in the world happened last year,
16:26which was I got to reunite with Nine Inch Nails and Blossom Music Center on
16:33August 20,
16:34on August 24th last year.
16:37And it was absolutely amazing.
16:39It was look it up on YouTube for all the listeners.
16:43It,
16:43it,
16:43it,
16:44it was absolutely amazing.
16:46Trent was so generous.
16:47I came out,
16:48he's like,
16:48you're singing eraser.
16:49I'm like,
16:50okay,
16:50I'm singing eraser.
16:51And I could barely hold my shit together because I was crying.
16:56You know,
16:57I was so overwhelmed.
16:58The audience was so overwhelmingly positive and sweet.
17:02And,
17:02and then,
17:05you know,
17:05then we went into wish and then,
17:07you know,
17:07sin and then gave up.
17:09And then he had Nine Inch Nails learn Hey Man,
17:13Nice Shot,
17:14the song that,
17:15you know,
17:15I left for.
17:16So he,
17:17Nine Inch Nails performed Hey Man,
17:19Nice Shot with me singing it.
17:21And then he's like,
17:22you're singing after that,
17:23we're doing head like a hole.
17:24And you're going to sing the,
17:26the second verse and head like a hole.
17:27And I'm like,
17:28God,
17:28all right,
17:29this is amazing.
17:31So,
17:31and I just had to like,
17:32I was just like freaking out.
17:34I'd say I'm making mistakes,
17:36singing the wrong lyrics,
17:37crying,
17:38you know,
17:38it was just,
17:39it was just the greatest thing ever.
17:41I,
17:41I,
17:42I just really,
17:43really had,
17:44had the best time ever.
17:46That is a great story.
17:47Cause you know,
17:47a lot of times some of these bands,
17:49they don't make up or they make up and they're in different dressing rooms or
17:51whatever the case is.
17:52But when did,
17:53when did that,
17:54did that,
17:54did that reunification start that now you got there or were you guys
17:58talking,
17:59texting back?
18:00There was,
18:02there was,
18:03you know,
18:04there was,
18:04I saw him in 1997 at a YouTube concert and it was pleasant and he was
18:09very sweet.
18:11And,
18:12you know,
18:14and then I,
18:15I saw him later on at,
18:18well,
18:19then I heard that he had gotten sober.
18:22and I was actually struggling with addiction at the time.
18:25And I,
18:26and I kind of remember getting sober,
18:28but it was really like,
18:30I think I sent him an email like 15 years ago.
18:33And I was like,
18:34yo dude,
18:34it's Richard.
18:35What's going on?
18:36I haven't talked to you in forever.
18:37How are you?
18:38And it was like,
18:39right then and there just kind of came back and we started goofing on,
18:43like telling old stories and stuff like that.
18:46So,
18:46and then over the time he's invited me to his,
18:50his,
18:50his house for stuff.
18:52And you know,
18:53he's he's,
18:54we,
18:54we went to a haunted house at universal studios and,
18:58you know,
18:58they have this big,
18:59huge haunted thing.
19:00And he invited me to that.
19:02And,
19:02and then,
19:03yeah,
19:04and we've always,
19:05and I have his phone number and I,
19:06we just text back and forth.
19:08We're always goofing on each other,
19:09you know,
19:09like goofing around on,
19:10on texting and stuff like that.
19:13So yeah,
19:14we've kept up.
19:16No,
19:16that's cool.
19:16I'm glad that you guys are,
19:18you know,
19:18at least back together and in some way,
19:21shape or form because,
19:22well,
19:23I mean,
19:23the thing to remember is we were so young and we were so crazy and,
19:28you know,
19:29there was,
19:30we were drunk all the time and like things,
19:32you know,
19:32like all of that stuff disappears when you start having kids and,
19:37and you get sober and you,
19:40you know,
19:40you realize life is short.
19:42Like I want to keep my friends from when I was a kid childhood.
19:46I like,
19:47I have,
19:47I have some dear friends that I stay in touch with over these,
19:51over these past 50 years,
19:52you know?
19:53And I think it's important to have those relationships.
19:57Cause you know,
19:58I knew Trent before he was huge.
20:00I knew Trent before,
20:01like,
20:01you know,
20:01I knew him when he was living in a tiny little apartment back in
20:05Cleveland,
20:05Ohio,
20:06you know?
20:06And I remember that guy as well as the guy that's,
20:11you know,
20:11just won a couple of Oscars and,
20:13and towards the world is nine inch nails and,
20:16and kicks ass.
20:17You know what I mean?
20:18And,
20:19and I think there's benefit in that.
20:24Yeah.
20:24By the way,
20:25I went to a show at Blossom music center last year and I just got out of
20:28traffic last week.
20:30Yeah.
20:31That place is the worst.
20:33It's yeah.
20:34You got to plan ahead.
20:36You got,
20:37but the facility is,
20:39Oh,
20:39the facility is great.
20:40Yeah.
20:40No doubt.
20:41Yeah.
20:42Half hours to get in.
20:44And I thought we,
20:44we left with plenty of time and the whole thing.
20:46And yeah,
20:46it wasn't great.
20:47So it's always been that way too.
20:49I mean,
20:49the same amount of people show up at it,
20:51you know what I mean?
20:52And it's got those two little roads.
20:54Yeah.
20:54And I'm like,
20:55did this place just open last week?
20:56They don't know what the traffic's going to do.
20:58It was just kind of stained to me,
20:59but yeah,
21:00you have to,
21:01you have to definitely plan ahead when you're leaving.
21:04So this is cool.
21:05Yeah.
21:05Right.
21:06So this is cool.
21:07So the record drops on August 25th.
21:09And the day before that is if I'm not mistaken,
21:11can you leave on the freaks on parade tour,
21:13correct?
21:14No,
21:14we're leaving tonight.
21:16I'm leaving this tomorrow morning at like 9 AM.
21:20We're going to go do like two or three shows just to kind of warm up like
21:24headline shows.
21:25And then we're going to meet up with those guys next week.
21:28I think.
21:29Yes.
21:29It starts on the 24th or something.
21:32If my memory serves,
21:33I don't have it written down here,
21:34but I thought it was the 24th.
21:35Yeah.
21:36I would have to look.
21:37I'm pretty sure it starts next week.
21:39So yeah,
21:41but yeah,
21:41it's going to be a huge tour.
21:44Rob zombie,
21:45Alice Cooper and ministry and filter.
21:48It's going to be insane.
21:50Yeah.
21:50That's great.
21:51So did you grow up a big zombie and Cooper fan?
21:54Of course.
21:54Well,
21:55I was zombie happened at the same time.
21:57Well,
21:57that's true.
21:58Yeah.
21:58You know what I mean?
21:59He,
21:59he kind of,
22:00we kind of came up together because I toured with white zombie back in
22:031995.
22:05And,
22:06but the band that really changed my life was ministry.
22:10The land of rape and honey came out in 1987 and I was at a ripe old age
22:15of like 18 or something like that.
22:17And it blew my mind.
22:19It was like,
22:20I,
22:21I had just been turned down by a record company for sounding too much like
22:25you too.
22:26And I called my friend up Trent Reznor.
22:28And he's like,
22:29dude,
22:29you just got to start listening to other things.
22:31You got to start listening to other bands.
22:33And my friend Dave Soleil came over with the cassette of the land of rape
22:38and honey,
22:38which is the ministry record.
22:40And it was unbelievable.
22:44It was so industrial.
22:45And I didn't even know what industrial was.
22:48And it blew my mind.
22:50And the next time I saw Trent,
22:52he saw me,
22:54he's like,
22:54he's like,
22:55what's gotten into you?
22:56And I'm like,
22:56I listened to skinny puppy in ministry and that's it.
22:59That's all my world is dark.
23:01You wouldn't understand.
23:02And Trent's like,
23:03you know what?
23:04I've got something for you.
23:05It's called nine inch nails.
23:06It's my project.
23:08And that's how I got into nine inch nails.
23:11No kidding.
23:12Wow.
23:12That's a great story.
23:13Yeah.
23:13Ministry.
23:14Man,
23:15I'll tell you what I want.
23:16I stood side stage for rock in the range.
23:17Watch them a couple of years ago.
23:19It's pretty wild.
23:20They're heavy.
23:21Yeah.
23:21Yeah.
23:22They just did this thing that we did called the hit core where it's a web.
23:26It's a web stream.
23:27It's hit core.
23:28H I T K O R.com.
23:31There's a concert that we did that anyone can see as long as they have 20
23:36bucks,
23:36but anyone can see.
23:39And so did ministry do it.
23:41And they're,
23:42they're amazing.
23:42And yeah,
23:44it was a,
23:45it was a great show to see them and they're heavy as hell.
23:49And,
23:50but they're the nicest guys in the world and it's going to be a blast
23:53touring with them.
23:54Yeah.
23:55Do you like,
23:55you like going on those big,
23:56like those big,
23:57like tours like that or do you,
23:58do you like to,
23:59do you prefer to headline or what,
24:00what do you like?
24:01I mean,
24:02yes to all of the above.
24:04I'm,
24:04I'm,
24:05I'm okay with opening the show and,
24:07and playing for 30 minutes.
24:10Cause it's easy.
24:11It's,
24:12it's really fun and easy to do those shows.
24:15But at the same time,
24:16I love headlining shows because we get to do so much from our catalog.
24:21I mean,
24:21remember we have eight records and so I,
24:24I like to hit each record and yeah,
24:30it's,
24:30it's,
24:31it's,
24:31it's,
24:32it's,
24:32I think it's,
24:34it's,
24:34it's,
24:34it's also the ticket.
24:36I,
24:37you go around the world on these things and you get to see foreign countries and you get to go to like,
24:42we're,
24:42we're going to be going to Europe next March and then Australia in April.
24:48And,
24:49um,
24:49we haven't announced that yet,
24:51but the rumor is,
24:52is that we're going to be going in April for those of you who live in Australia and hear this somehow,
24:58uh,
24:59which is totally possible.
25:00Well,
25:01in this day and age,
25:02anything's fine.
25:03Yeah.
25:04With this,
25:04but yeah,
25:05just going to Australia and seeing the rest of the world and stuff like that.
25:09That's always fun.
25:10And those are going to be headlining shows for sure.
25:12You take your kids out on tour with you.
25:14Well,
25:15no,
25:16they're big enough.
25:16They're in school.
25:17They're,
25:18uh,
25:19it was hard leaving them when I was,
25:21you know,
25:22when I was on tour for like eight months out of the year,
25:25back in 2013,
25:272014,
25:272015,
25:28they were like,
25:29you know,
25:29six and seven years old and they didn't really understand where I was going.
25:33Um,
25:34but,
25:35uh,
25:35now that they're older and they're a little bit more together and everything's rocking and they're a students.
25:41I,
25:41I,
25:42I tend to leave them at,
25:43you know,
25:44at,
25:44at first school and,
25:45and hanging out with their mom and just,
25:48just making sure they rock in school and everything like that.
25:51Yeah.
25:51That's great.
25:51But,
25:52but,
25:52you know,
25:52I,
25:53I come back,
25:54I mean,
25:54this tour is only six weeks long and then I'm going to be back for three or four months working on a movie score.
26:00And then,
26:01um,
26:01after that,
26:02and that's another reason why the algorithm took seven years to make is because I was doing movie scores all in between it.
26:09And,
26:10um,
26:10uh,
26:12that's,
26:12that's my side hustle.
26:14That's,
26:15that's what I do to,
26:16to,
26:17to keep the wheels of,
26:19of,
26:19of industry going.
26:21Yeah,
26:21no doubt.
26:22And,
26:22and,
26:22and,
26:23and plus we had a pandemic right in the middle of that too.
26:25Yeah.
26:25And the pandemic,
26:26yeah,
26:27that'll slow you down.
26:28So the pandemic was kind of crazy because I was working on the movies and I was doing the record.
26:33So it didn't really affect me.
26:34I mean,
26:34I,
26:34I wore a mask.
26:36I remember that,
26:37but like,
26:37and I got vaccinated three or four times,
26:40but,
26:41uh,
26:42uh,
26:43yeah,
26:44it,
26:44uh,
26:44the pandemic didn't really hurt us.
26:46And my kids were completely like,
26:49Oh,
26:49sure.
26:50School on our computer.
26:52Great.
26:52Right.
26:53They were,
26:53they took to it like zoom meetings.
26:56They,
26:56they took to it quickly and studied and got great grades.
27:00So I'm proud of my little,
27:02my little ones.
27:03Yeah.
27:03Stop rubbing it in.
27:04Cause my son,
27:05my son was on zoom.
27:07Maybe I don't know what half the time,
27:10but,
27:10uh,
27:10Hey,
27:10uh,
27:10last thing here for you.
27:11I can't believe what I tell people that,
27:13that your brother is Robert Patrick.
27:15Like people don't know that or something.
27:17Are you,
27:17you know,
27:18are you in,
27:19you in touch with your brother?
27:20You guys hang out.
27:20You guys,
27:21you know,
27:21you know,
27:22as life is going on,
27:23we don't,
27:24we don't really talk too much that much.
27:26Uh,
27:27he's politically,
27:28he's really different than I am.
27:29And,
27:30and,
27:30um,
27:31you know,
27:32he's,
27:32he's a,
27:33he's a booze fighter.
27:34He's a,
27:34uh,
27:35he's in a motorcycle club that he loves and,
27:38but he's,
27:38he loves acting and he's also a singer and he's been,
27:42he's been working on music for the last 10 years.
27:46Like,
27:46like,
27:47you know,
27:47he,
27:47he did a song,
27:48uh,
27:49called Oh Lord on the,
27:51um,
27:52last rampage soundtrack that's out there on high music and everything.
27:57And,
27:57um,
27:58but yeah,
27:58you know,
27:59Robert,
27:59the actor,
28:00he's my bro,
28:01Rob,
28:01the slob.
28:02I call him.
28:02I just saw somebody,
28:04just somebody just ran into him,
28:05uh,
28:06on this,
28:06uh,
28:06Instagram account.
28:07I follow,
28:08he was in,
28:08uh,
28:09Ireland.
28:09And I guess this guy walked out of a tavern and your,
28:11your brother was there and I,
28:13you know,
28:13and it'd be kind of cool.
28:14I never met him before,
28:15but he seems like a pretty good dude,
28:16but I,
28:17yeah,
28:17my brother lives 300 miles away.
28:19We're seven,
28:20you know,
28:20seven years apart and yeah,
28:21we don't communicate that much,
28:23you know?
28:24Yeah.
28:24You know,
28:25I mean,
28:25brothers always fight,
28:27you know,
28:27it's just,
28:28we come from a fighting kind of intense family and,
28:32uh,
28:32you know,
28:33we're,
28:33we're,
28:34you know,
28:35we bicker back and forth,
28:36but you know,
28:37ultimately I love him and I wish him well.
28:39Right.
28:39There you go.
28:40Well,
28:40Richard,
28:41thanks so much for everything we'll see here on a September 5th,
28:43a freaks on the parade,
28:44a freaks on parade tour.
28:45And,
28:46uh,
28:46the algorithm drops on August 25th.
28:48Good luck with everything.
28:50Thank you so much.
28:50And I hope you guys are playing obliteration and,
28:53uh,
28:53I hope you join our ads this week.
28:55Hopefully you're like,
28:58no comment.
28:59You're going to edit that.
29:01That's not me.
29:02I just,
29:04I just say stupid crap on the radio,
29:05but,
29:06uh,
29:06yeah,
