00:08Barack Obama was born in Honolulu in 1961 to biracial parents.
00:12When Obama was age 2, his father, Barack Sr., left to study at Harvard University.
00:16Shortly thereafter, in 1964, and Barack's mother and Barack Sr. divorced.
00:21After his mother remarried, Barack was sent to live with his grandparents.
00:24Obama enrolled in the esteemed Panahu Academy.
00:27He excelled in basketball and graduated with academic honors in 1979.
00:31Obama attended college in Los Angeles and New York City,
00:34where in 1983 he received a bachelor's degree in political science.
00:37He returned to school three years later and graduated magna cum laude in 1991
00:41from Harvard University's Law School, where he was the first African-American
00:45to serve as president of the Harvard Law Review.
00:47After law school, in February 2007, Barack Obama made headlines when he announced his candidacy
00:53for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination.
00:56On November 4, 2008, Barack Obama defeated Republican presidential nominee John McCain to win the election
01:03and become the 44th president of the United States and the first African-American to hold this office.
01:09He won a second term in 2012.
