00:06Muhammad Ali, born Cassius Marcellus Clay on January 17, 1942, in Louisville, Kentucky.
00:12At the age of 12, Ali discovered his talent for boxing and soon began his boxing career.
00:17Ali became known for his lightning speed and fancy footwork.
00:20Ali would go on to win the light heavyweight Olympic gold medal.
00:23Ali knocked out Sonny Liston in 1964 to become the heavyweight champion of the world.
00:28Muhammad Ali started a different kind of fight with his outspoken views against the Vietnam War
00:33when, after he was drafted in 1967, he refused to serve on the grounds that he was a practicing Muslim minister
00:39with religious beliefs that prevented him from fighting.
00:42He was arrested for committing a felony and almost immediately stripped of his world title and boxing license.
00:48Ali returned to the ring in 1970, and the U.S. Supreme Court eventually overturned his conviction for violating selective service in June of 1971.
00:57Ali reclaimed the heavyweight title two more times during the 70s, winning famed bouts against Joe Frazier and George Foreman along the way.
01:05Ali devoted much of his time to philanthropy, earning the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2005.
