00:29migrants to the Guantanamo Naval Base.
00:36And Hamas and Israel completed their third hostess exchange as part of the ceasefire
00:41deal signed on January 17.
00:50Hello and welcome to From the South, I'm Alejandra Garcia from Telesur Studios in Caracas, Venezuela.
00:55We begin with the news, stay with us.
01:00Uganda's health authorities reported Thursday the Ebola-related death of a nurse, the first
01:18recorded fatality from that disease since the last outbreak that ended in 2023.
01:23According to authorities, the 32-year-old male nurse was an employee of Mulago Hospital
01:28in the capital Kampala, and was treated at several locations in the country after developing
01:33a fever.
01:34Multiple lab tests confirmed he had been suffering from Ebola, while the sudden strain
01:40of the disease was confirmed following post-mortem tests.
01:44At least 44 contacts of the victim have been identified, including 30 health workers and
01:49patients at Mulago Hospital.
01:51Uganda's last Ebola outbreak was discovered in September 2022 and killed at least 55 people
01:58before it was declared over in January 2023.
02:18The French town of Redon remains flooded as residents wait for water levels to decrease
02:23after a nearby river did not recede as quickly as expected.
02:27The Armenian Depression earlier this week unleashed downpours on northwestern France,
02:32sparking some of the worst floods in decades.
02:35As a result, the town of Redon in the region of Brittany has been sitting in water since
02:40Wednesday as it is surrounded by two rivers, a canal and marshes.
02:45Meanwhile, the Red Cross had set up an emergency shelter for 50 people at a local sports centre,
02:50with camp beds lined in a row and tables and chairs set up under its basketball hoops.
02:57The water is 50 centimetres inside, 45 centimetres here and 45 centimetres outside.
03:07The water comes from the basement, from outside and from the pipe.
03:10So we've actually saved all this.
03:12We put it here and blocked it off here.
03:14The hotel is working at the moment, just without hot water because the boiler was damaged.
03:20They brought in a pump to stabilise the water level so it wouldn't hit the electricity box
03:24behind it.
03:25The electricity box would have been affected by the water, which would have meant that
03:28they would have cut the electricity to the whole of Rue des Dauves.
03:31That would have meant evacuating people.
03:33It would have meant the risk of an accident, lots of things.
03:36So they were super reactive.
03:38You really have to give them credit for that."
03:41Australia's recovered more than 30 bodies from the Potomac River after a passenger plane
03:47and a military helicopter collided in Washington DC in the United States.
03:51With no reports of survivors, search and rescue teams continue to work to recover the
03:55bodies of 64 passengers and crew from the plane and three from the helicopter.
04:00A team of divers has recovered two black box recorders from the crash site, which showed
04:06that the operators asked the helicopter if the plane was inside before the crash but
04:11did not receive an answer.
04:13The American Airlines plane was on a domestic flight between Wichita and Washington DC when
04:18it crashed and landed at Vigan International Airport.
04:29On Thursday morning, President Donald Trump confirmed that there were no survivors of
04:33the plane crash and held a minute's silence for the victims.
04:39I would like to request a moment of silence for the workers now shifted to a recovery
04:45mission.
04:46Sadly, there are no survivors.
04:50This was a dark and excruciating night in our nation's capital and in our nation's history
04:56and a tragedy of terrible proportions.
05:00As one nation we grieve for every precious soul that has been taken from us so suddenly
05:07and we are a country of really we are in mourning.

05:30Welcome back to From the South.
05:43Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel rejected Thursday the US government's decision to send
05:48illegal migrants to the Guantanamo Naval Base.
05:51According to US President Donald Trump, a facility holding as many as 30,000 inmates
05:56will be built in the illegally occupied Cuban territory to house what he described as the
06:01worst criminal illegal aliens threatening the people of the United States.
06:05The Guantanamo Naval Base has been occupied by the US government since 1898 against the
06:11will of the Cuban people.
06:12During the last few days, the United States Immigration and Customs Control Service intensified
06:17its operations, detaining at least 5,000 immigrants and issuing more than 1,000 arrest warrants.
06:26The Cuban President expressed on X his rejection to Washington's decision posting, in an act
06:35of brutality, the near US government announces the imprisonment in the Guantanamo Naval Base
06:41located in illegally occupied Cuban territory of thousands of migrants that it forcibly
06:46expelling who will be placed next to the infamous prison of torture and illegal detention.
06:57The Sixth International Conference of World Violence continues in Havana, Cuba with the
07:03holding of forums, social workshops and the World Congress on Poets for Peace and Defense of Life.
07:09Forums such as International Coalition of Humanity and Building a World Beyond Wars
07:14are part of the event to face the problems of development and the consequences of armed
07:19conflicts in the world. At the same time, a space is planned to promote the experiences
07:24of the José Martí Cultural Society and José Martí's ideology in the Caribbean
07:28Island as well as the Third International Colloquium of Cuban Historians. The event
07:33is being attended by more than 600 delegates from 98 countries and will end on Friday.
07:46Brazil's President Lula da Silva assures that the country will respond reciprocally
07:50if the U.S. imposes tariffs against Brazilian imports. In the face of Trump's threats,
07:56the Brazilian head of state also indicated that he seeks to establish a practical relationship
08:01with his U.S. counterparts, especially on environmental issues. In addition, he recalled
08:06Colombia's diplomatic situation with Washington after refusing to receive deportations, which
08:12caused tensions between both governments. However, the White House announced that it
08:16would pause the imposition of the additional tariffs to other nations announced by Trump.
08:28It is very simple. If he imposes tariffs on Brazilian products, there will be reciprocity
08:34from Brazil. We will impose tariffs on products exported from the United States. It's simple.
08:39There is no problem.
08:41Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro called the ALBA-TCP members to a summit meeting in
08:46order to evaluate the political landscape in the region within the context of the far-right
08:51aggressions. The Bolivarian head of state said he agreed with the presidents and prime
08:55ministers of the bloc's member states to hold the summit on Monday, February 3rd.
09:01The announcement was made during a meeting with the teams promoting the nation's great
09:05During the event, Maduro stressed that coups d'etat in Latin America have always been
09:09triggered by Yankee-orientated oligarchies and the United States government.
09:20Days before the first national public consultation of 2025,
09:24Maduro said that he was ready to meet with the president of the United States,
09:29and that he was ready to meet with the president of the United States.
09:31Days before the first national public consultation of 2025,
09:35Telesur visited different communes to know the transformations that their inhabitants have
09:41carried out through this democratic and participative initiative.
09:44Belén de los Santos, our correspondent in Caracas, has more details from El Panal 2021 commune.
09:51On Sunday, February 2nd, the communes and communal circuits of Venezuela will go to the polls.
09:57Instead of electing representatives, Venezuelans will be able to directly decide
10:01which community projects will be financed in their territories. This is the third
10:07national public consultation of 2025, and it will be held in the capital of Venezuela,
10:12the capital of the Dominican Republic.
10:14which community projects will be financed in their territories. This is the third national
10:20public consultation, another chapter in the construction of Bolivarian participative
10:26and protagonist democracy. In the El Panal 2021 commune, located in the iconic 23 de
10:33enero parish in Caracas, this new instance of popular organization is eagerly awaited.
10:40With lots of joy, with much enthusiasm, in recent days we held an assembly with our
10:47nine communities, where they postulated six projects ranging from repairs to cultural
10:52spaces, fixing of leaks in our buildings, in our houses. We have tried to ensure that
10:57the reality of our communities is represented in this participation of the 2025 national
11:03public consultation.
11:09The two previous national consultations held in 2024 have already left their mark in El
11:15Panal. At that time, the residents of the commune decided to finance the renovation
11:20of a staircase of vital importance for the daily life of the commune, and the purchase
11:25of an ambulance to guarantee the transfers to health centers. These projects are now
11:30a reality.
11:32The ambulance is for us, our first executed project, it was really an initiative of our
11:40people, it has changed the community a lot. Now from the people's power it is possible
11:45with a lot of effort to have our own means for the transfer and health care of our people.
11:52And truly, many people, both here in building 28 and in the whole community,
11:56have benefited from having the ambulance, people from here and from outside,
12:00so it is very good, it really is.
12:03For the neighbors of El Panal, the consultation evidences the steps taken by the Valdivarian
12:09government to achieve a participative and protagonist democracy based on the strengthening
12:14of the popular power.
12:16This relation between the government and the grassroots, popular power, is fundamental
12:22to really reorganize the whole of society, to put the people al mando, we would say in
12:30Spanish, in control of their own lives, collectively, not individually, the people, the working
12:36class, in charge of their history, of their daily life, of their economy, that is basically
12:45what the communists, and these consults are an exercise that helps us go in that direction.
12:54The walls of El Panal speak of a history of struggle and a clear horizon for the future.
12:59The consolidation of popular power and the creative capacity of the inhabitants to transform
13:05their own territory. In this sense, the public consultations are a step further on the road
13:11to this dignified and sobering destiny.
13:16Because here they do not come to do what others think is convenient for us, or what they think
13:20we need. We have a plan, and that work plan is called a concrete agenda of action, what
13:25we want in the short, medium and long term. On February 2nd, the people come out, they
13:30wake up very early to go out to vote, to choose. We get the results and then this government,
13:36this communal government, this new government of the communes, goes out and carries out
13:40these projects, executes them financially and with its qualified labor force, because
13:44we have that force.
14:14Welcome back to From the South. The Palestinian resistance movement Hamas and Israel has completed
14:42their third hostage exchange as part of the ceasefire deal signed on January 17th. After
14:48a delay of a few hours, the Israeli occupation released 110 Palestinian hostages in compliance
14:55with the agreement. The Palestinian Commission for Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs and
15:00the Palestinian Prisoners Society pointed out that in the group set free by the Israeli
15:05forces there are 32 people serving life sentences, 48 serving various prison sentences and at
15:11least 30 children. On the other hand, before the Palestinian hostages released, Hamas handed
15:17over three Israeli prisoners to the International Red Cross as part of the exchange. The United
15:29Nations urged the State of Israel to reverse its decision to ban UNRWA from operating in
15:35Gaza, East Jerusalem and the West Bank. The United Nations Office for Human Rights expressed
15:40its concern about the decision and warned of the serious impact the ban would have on
15:45essential services, including food distribution, medical care and education in the occupied
15:50Palestinian territories. The international body also stressed the serious human rights
15:55consequences for tens of thousands of Palestinians and urged the Israeli government to repeal
16:01the law passed in October by the Israeli Knesset. The Israeli regime's decision has provoked
16:06international criticisms, with humanitarian organizations warning of negative repercussions
16:12it will have on Palestinian refugees who depend on the agency's services.
16:22The Israeli occupation forces cut roads, demolished houses and attacked civilians
16:27in villages south of the Lebanese border. The Tel Aviv occupation has once again violated the
16:32ceasefire agreement by carrying out a bulldozer operation in the border town of Al-Daida. An
16:38Israeli drone also dropped a bomb near a family inspecting their home on the outskirts of the
16:43village of Talusa. In this context, since the ceasefire came into force on November 27th,
16:50Israel has violated the ceasefire more than 1,300 times without being condemned
16:55by the monitoring mechanisms that are supposed to ensure compliance with what has already been
17:00agreed.
17:07Syrian de facto terrorist governments disbanded the People's Assembly as well as other national
17:12and political institutions and laws. De facto authorities announced Wednesday the abrogation
17:18of the constitution, including all associated amendments. Likewise, they unfolded dismissing
17:23the People's Assembly, which had been set during Bashar al-Assad's government. In addition,
17:29they disbanded the committees derived from that entity. They further informed that a temporary
17:34legislative council will be created for the transitional stage until a permanent constitution
17:40be enacted. And with this information, we have come to the end of this news feed. But remember,
