00:00South Pacific countries bid farewell to the year 2024 and welcome the year 2025 with fireworks
00:16and large parties.
00:20Palestinians received a new year in the midst of a humanitarian crisis, product of the Israeli
00:25genocidal operation in the region.
00:30And Panamanian President José Raúl Molina reaffirmed the 70th of the Panama Canal on
00:35the 25th anniversary of its administration handover to the nation.
00:44Hello and welcome to From the South, I'm Alejandra García from Telesur Studios in Havana, Cuba.
00:49We begin with an ease.
00:50The South Pacific countries are the first regions worldwide to bid farewell to the year
00:552024 and welcome the year 2025.
00:58Kiribati was the first country to celebrate the arrival of the new year 2025 with fireworks
01:04and festivities.
01:05The city of Outlet in New Zealand joined this worldwide celebration with thousands of people
01:11and the traditional countdown and colourful fireworks launched from the country's tallest
01:16structure, the Sky Tower.
01:18Likewise, other regions such as Samoa, Tonga, Shadham Islands, Fiji and Australia celebrated
01:25with their families the traditional arrival of the new year.
01:34Around the world, people entered the new year at 38 different times during 26 hours.
01:40The Kiritimati Atoll Alliance Christmas Island was the first to bring in the new year.
01:47Kiribati is a 33-island country in the Central Pacific Ocean.
01:51Other nations that already welcomed 2025 were New Zealand and Australia.
01:56Some people enjoy toasting twice for the new year, so they cross over time-zone borders.
02:03They can travel from Sweden to Finland, from New Zealand to Cook Islands, from Guam to
02:08Honolulu, among other cases.
02:10Finally, Kiritimati will be into January 2, 2025, before uninhabited Howland and Baker
02:18Islands leave 2024.
02:20For their 26-hour time difference, the islands, which are officially part of the US territory,
02:27are located in the Pacific Ocean.
02:33The Indian Space Research Organisation, ISRO, described Tuesday as a success the liftoff
02:40of the SPEED-X mission, the two-satellite docking experiment that will advance future
02:45manned spaceflight.
02:48Some goals of the SPEED-X mission are to enhance and demonstrate the technologies required
02:53for rendezvous, which involves docking and undocking of small spacecraft in a low circular
03:01orbit around the Earth.
03:02The project counts on a novel processor that facilitates determining accurately the relative
03:09position and velocity of small spacecraft.
03:12Moreover, the mission serves as a test for the Small Satellite Launch Vehicles, SSLV,
03:18that India started producing for commercial purposes.
03:21Furthermore, it will be paramount for future lunar expeditions on the Baritiya Antirish
03:27Station, BAS.
03:34Vietnam's capital will rise its stakes in the tourism sector by 2025, Hanoi expects
03:39to welcome 30 million tourists, including 7 million foreign visitors.
03:44The number compared favorably with 2024's figures.
03:48This year, Hanoi welcomed over 27.8 million travelers, 12.7% more than in 2023.
03:56According to the Municipal Department of Tourism, in 2024, revenue generated by the sector totalled
04:02US$4.33 billion, a year-on-year rise of 18.3%.
04:09The Vietnamese capital introduced more than 20 new night tourism activities this year
04:14and developed seven pedestrian streets with culinary and cultural activities.
04:22The United States has detained nearly 44,000 people at its southern border with Mexico
04:28during the month of December.
04:30According to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Office, the figure could increase slightly
04:35in the last hours of 2024.
04:37The data corresponds to the statistics that have been maintained throughout the year.
04:42The border office assures that the levels registered since July are maintained and points
04:47out that December becomes the sixth consecutive month, with figures lower than those registered
04:53in the monthly average of 2019.
04:56In this context, the Mexican government's immigration policy has achieved a 75% reduction
05:02in irregular crossings of its northern border.
05:09In the United States, California farmers are increasingly alarmed by President-elect Donald
05:14Trump's deportation plans, which threaten to disrupt the agricultural workforce.
05:19In the Central Valley, where nearly half of farm workers are undocumented, many farmers
05:24rely on this labour for essential tasks like hand-picking crops.
05:29While some dairy farmers remain sceptical about the likelihood of mass deportations,
05:34fruit and nut growers fear that such actions could lead to significant labour shortages,
05:41resulting in wasted harvests and rising food prices.
05:44Many farmers who supported Trump now face the grim reality that his policies could devastate
05:50their operations.
05:52Advocates warn that mass deportations would not only harm the agricultural sector, but
05:57also exacerbate existing issues of food insecurity and inflation.
06:05We don't know what mass deportation is going to mean.
06:09We don't know when it's going to start.
06:11He said it's going to be in day one.
06:13I don't know where he's going to start because if there are millions of people here, he obviously
06:18can't cover the whole country at one time.
06:20I don't know where he's going to go.
06:23Hopefully it gives us time to reach out to the administration and talk to them about
06:30immigration for our essential workers, like our farm workers, that we can't have deportations
06:38here because it would disrupt our food supply for the country.
06:43We really don't think that anybody wants that.
06:48And now we have a short break coming up.
06:49But first, remember you can join us on TikTok at TELUS at English, where you'll find news
06:53in different formats, news updates and more.
06:56Stay with us.
07:19Welcome back to From the South.
07:29Palestinians received the New Year in the midst of a humanitarian crisis, a product
07:33of the Israeli genocidal operation in the region that entails the destruction of their
07:37territory under the indifferent gaze of most nations of the world.
07:42In this regard, the Palestinian Higher Presidential Committee for Church Affairs denounced in
07:47its New Year's message Tel Aviv's plan of extermination and occupation in the region,
07:52which the regime has been committing for over 14 months in open violation of human rights
07:58and in complicity with the international community.
08:01Furthermore, it warned that the Zionist forces' campaign is targeting women and children,
08:06the elderly and holy places, and stressed that the legal and moral responsibility for
08:11these crimes falls on the leaders of the world, who should act to achieve global peace.
08:21Displaced Palestinians within the Gaza Strip are facing a difficult situation as heavy
08:25rains have flooded dozens of tents in Deir el-Balad downtown and in southern al-Mawassi.
08:32These rains are accompanied by thunderstorms and falling temperatures, aggravating the
08:36situation for the nearly 1.6 million Gazans illegally displaced to makeshift shelters.
08:43Gazan authorities reported that at least 110,000 out of the 135,000 tents in which the refugees
08:51are staying are unfit for use.
08:54As a result, thousands are subjected to rain and low temperatures while the health system
08:59is slowly destroyed by the genocidal forces.
09:03The outer tent, which we were using as a kitchen, collapsed, and inside the tent, we
09:11were submerged in water and the ground became slippery.
09:22I appeal to all Arab and foreign countries to try to save us and to immediately take
09:26the initiative to stop and end the war.
09:30We, as a Palestinian people, are tired.
09:34The water has submerged us, the tents have been blown away.
09:39All night long we have been holding on to our tents to cover ourselves.
09:44Where could we possibly go?
09:49Through a joint statement, more than 11 experts at the Service of the United Nations demanded
09:54an end to the protection of Israel's international allies, so the Zionist regime can be held
09:59accountable for the genocide it commits on Gaza.
10:02The communique highlights the lack of responsibility of the Tel Aviv government for having openly
10:07defied international humanitarian law.
10:10To this end, experts from all fields listed with data the extensive number of war crimes
10:16perpetrated by the Israeli troops, among them murder, torture, sexual violence, forced displacement,
10:23destruction of hospitals, schools and the use of starvation as a weapon of war.
10:28The crimes are part of the host of atrocities that Netanyahu's administration commits,
10:33thanks to the protection provided by governments such as the United States, the United Kingdom,
10:38France and Germany, among others.
10:45On Tuesday, Yemeni Houthi forces launched a drone and missile attack on the USS Harry
10:51S. Truman aircraft carrier.
10:53Precisely, the spokesman for the Yemeni Armed Forces, Jaja Sadeh, informed that in a joint
10:59operation by the Navy, missile force and air force had managed to hit the ninth US nuclear
11:05aircraft carrier.
11:07The military spokesman also said they had foiled an attack by Washington forces on their
11:12territory and revealed they had carried out an operation hours earlier using Palestinian
11:17class 2 hypersonic missiles on Israeli territory.
11:27South Korean Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport briefed Tuesday having identified
11:32174 out of the 179 fatal victims from the December 30 plane crash at Muan airport in
11:40the southern region.
11:42Officers are still working on identifying other five corpses but those 174 remains have
11:49been handed over to their relatives.
11:52Authorities explained that the bodies are being preserved in a temporary cold storage
11:56facility installed in a hangar of the airport to keep them until their families take them.
12:02On this incident, just two people, both flight attendants, managed to survive after the plane
12:08crashed into a concrete wall.
12:10So far, both black boxes from flight 2216, the flight data recorded and the cockpit voice
12:17recorded have been found.
12:2011 accident investigators from the Aviation and Railway Accident Investigation Board and
12:32eight joint investigators from the US will be dispatched to the scene and begin the accident
12:37investigation starting today.
12:39Among the eight joint investigators from the US side, one is from the US Federal Aviation
12:44Administration, three are from the US National Transportation Safety Board and four from
12:49the aircraft manufacturer Boeing.
12:57Regarding the black box, the test and analysis center has completed cleaning the surface
13:02contamination and is currently checking its condition.
13:06However, it was found out that the flight data recorder has lost the connector of the
13:10data storage unit and the power supply unit.
13:13As a result, we are conducting a technical review to find a method to extract the data.
13:22Chinese President Xi Jinping addressed the nation in a New Year's speech broadcast highlighting
13:27China's roadmap for 2025 and stressing that current world challenges may be overcome with
13:33hard work.
13:40In 2025, we will fully complete the 14th Five-Year Plan.
13:46We must implement more proactive policies, focus on high-quality development, promote
13:51high-level scientific and technological self-reliance, and maintain the good momentum of economic
13:56and social development.
14:00The current economic system faces some new problems, challenges from the uncertainty
14:04of the external environment, and pressure from the transformation of new and old economic
14:08drivers, but these can be overcome through hard work.
14:23On Tuesday, the Russian Defense Ministry confirmed a series of attacks on Ukrainian territory
14:28with high-precision weapons.
14:30Russian forces shelled a military airfield and an enterprise of the military industry.
14:35Moscow forces also used unmanned aerial vehicles.
14:39The Defense Ministry added that the Black Sea Fleet destroyed eight unmanned Ukrainian
14:45vessels while its anti-aircraft defenses shot down more than 103 drones.
14:51Ukraine claimed in a morning report that its forces shot down a Russian helicopter and
14:55called the operation a historic event.

15:30Welcome back to From the South.
15:32Panamanian President José Raúl Molino reaffirmed the sovereignty of the Panama Canal on the
15:3725th anniversary of its administration handover to the nation.
15:41In response to US President-elect Donald Trump's threats of appropriating the canal, Molino
15:46clarified the waterway is not for sale, noting it will continue to belong to Panamanians
15:52and be a disservice of the world.
15:55Even though the United States built it in 1914, the US government transferred it to
16:01Panama on December 31, 1999.
16:04Nowadays, the US is the canal's main user, with over 160.1 million tons passing by the
16:12route, which represents 74.1% of the total freight.
16:17Meanwhile, China and Japan take the subsequent positions as they harnessed the canal to move
16:2345 million tons and 30.7 million tons, equal to 21.4% and 14.6% respectively in 2024.
16:41It is because of our neutral stance that nations do not fear that a canal of such a
16:45strategic level as the Panama Canal could be, or take an active part in any conflict.
16:50Because we Panamanians are interested in a more connected world, with a more open trade,
16:54and with a greater exchange of goods between countries, there are no other forces involved
16:58in our canal but the Panamanian ones.
17:07Ecuador's National Electoral Council has rejected a request to discuss a regularity
17:11that President Daniel Novoa intends to commit by staying in office while campaigning for
17:17re-election.
17:18The request, made by Consulwoman Elena Najera, demanded the council to decide over the application
17:24of the law in question, which obligates the head of state to take an unpaid leave of absence
17:31during the campaign for re-election that starts on January 5.
17:34Novoa has failed to comply with Article 93 of the Democratic Code in order to avoid handing
17:40over the mandate to the Vice President Veronica Abad, as the Ecuadorian legal and constitutional
17:45framework require.
17:47In this context, after the council's decision, Najera accused her colleagues of siding with
17:53the president at the expense of democratic principles.
17:58Yes, it is important that the National Electoral Council pronounces itself, by means of a resolution,
18:08so that from there the compliance, or non-compliance with the norm may be derived.
18:12Having said this, I know that you come to these sessions having previously discussed
18:16that you already know what is going to happen, I already anticipated it in an interview on
18:21the radio, that in general, the only counselor that is and acts alone is me, since all of
18:27you manage yourselves through previous discussions, even the schedules you set are already agreed
18:32upon.
18:33So because of that, the citizens tell you and are aware of who is going to manage the
18:37electoral processes, because it cannot be that here interpretations are given based
18:42on relationships with whichever government is in power.
18:49Also in this regard, National Assembly member Lucia Pozo referred to the conduct of Ecuadorian
18:54President Daniel Novoa, calling it an ethical fault and pointing out the legal breach it
19:01entails.
19:04No authority can go out to campaign while being an authority, that has not been seen,
19:09it is not foreseen.
19:10But even before the law, ethically it is unpresentable, that they want to support the president of
19:15the republic since surely if he wants to do it, the rest of us have to do the same, right?
19:21I find it really unconscionable, more so from the ethical standpoint, than from the
19:25legal one, with which he is also being protected.
19:29And on the other hand, you must realize the immense contradiction that exists when there
19:34is a government that is precisely proposing to eliminate the financing of political organizations,
19:39right? and then wants the state to fund its campaign.
19:44It is laughable, they have no logic, they have no coherence whatsoever, to the point
19:49of imposing themselves under the arrogance, under the lack of capacity to reach an agreement
19:54among them.
20:00In this context, the National Electoral Council of Ecuador approved an almost 14 million dollar
20:05fund for the electoral campaign.
20:07Resources will be distributed in an equitable manner for leading campaigns on press, radio,
20:12television, social media, among others.
20:15The electoral activity is scheduled from January 5th to February 6th, 2025, for going
20:21to the polls where over 13 million voters are eligible to elect the new Ecuadorian head
20:26of state.
20:27The 151 members of the National Assembly and the five representatives to Parliament will
20:32be elected as well.
20:38In Ecuador, the murder of the four missing children in Guayaquil is confirmed.
20:43The Ecuadorian Prosecutor's Office reports that the results of the examinations of forensic
20:49genetics confirm that the four bodies found in Taura correspond to the three teenagers
20:55and a child who disappeared after a military operation on December 8th.
21:08The Venezuelan Public Prosecutor's Office reported Monday having released 1,369 detainees
21:14who had participated in the violent riots and crimes committed after the July 28th elections.
21:20The entity explained that from December 26th to 30th, 413 petitions had been assessed to
21:28study the cases of those involved in acts of violence following the electoral process.
21:33These releases were granted under a process of respect and unrestricted observance of
21:39the principles and guarantees enshrined in the Constitution of the Republic in matters
21:44of human rights.
21:45Thus, the Public Prosecutor's Office reaffirmed its commitment to the defence of peace, justice
21:51and the rights of Venezuelans.
22:02And we have come to the end of this news brief, but you can find this and many other stories
22:06on our website at www.telesudyinglish.net and join us on social media.
22:10We are on Facebook, Instagram, Telegram and TikTok as well.
22:14For TELUSUDIENGLISH, I'm Alejandra Garcia.
