00:17civic-military rebellion of January 23, 1958 that overthrew the dictator General Marcos
00:24Pérez Jiménez.
00:28More than 31,000 people have been forced to flee their homes in Los Angeles, western United
00:33States, as a new fire rages in North Castile.
00:38Israel's deadly raid in West Bank, Yenin, has entered its third day, with its forces
00:45issuing a forced evacuation threat to residents of the refugee camp in the city.
00:52Hello and welcome to From the South, I'm Alejandra Garcia from Telecir Studios in Caracas, Venezuela.
00:57To begin with the news, stay with us.
01:13The people of Venezuela mobilized in defense of their sovereignty and to commemorate the
01:17civic-military rebellion of January 23, 1958 that overthrew the dictator General Marcos
01:23Pérez Jiménez.
01:25The demonstration in Caracas also takes place in the midst of the ongoing Bolivarian Shield
01:292025 military drill that seeks to warranty the country's territorial defense with the
01:46participation of the organized popular power.
01:49In this regard, the first vice president of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela, Diosdado
01:53Cabello, highlighted the determination of the Venezuelan people to defend their sovereignty
02:06and independence against any threat against the peace and stability of the nation.
02:12During the mobilization to commemorate the 67th anniversary of the end of Marcos Pérez
02:25Jiménez's dictatorship, the president of Venezuela recalled the legacy of the eternal
03:30In addition, the president of Venezuela declared that the actions of the extreme right will
03:48have no place in Venezuela, and we will see each other in the same balcony in the next
04:10year 2020, the 21st, the 22nd, the 23rd, the 24th, the 25th, and from now on, because
04:18power belongs to the people of Venezuela.
04:27Do you remember where the fake president is?
04:43Moreover, President Nicolás Maduro referred to the activation of the third transformation
04:48related to the security and sovereignty of the country, which the Venezuelan people are
04:52preparing to defend.
04:55But what I can ask, and we are cleared about, where is the Venezuelan people?
05:01Where is the Bolivarian revolution?
05:04We are victorious, moving forward in an offensive.
05:18the third T, the T of security and sovereignty, and we deployed the civic-military-police
05:37fusion in the whole country.
05:40They think we are playing, but we are not playing.
05:56We are getting ready permanently for the armed fight in defense of peace, institutionality,
06:05stability, and the right to the future of Venezuela.
06:09In Venezuela, January 23rd marks the 67th anniversary of the fall of the dictatorship
06:15of General Marcos Pérez Jiménez after the people's uprising that sought to restore
06:20freedom and democracy.
06:25Marcos Pérez Jiménez governed Venezuela from 1952 to 1958, establishing an authoritarian
06:34regime characterized by censorship, persecution, and human rights violations, while popular
06:40discontent rose due to the lack of liberties and repression.
06:46Various sectors of society, such as students and workers, extended the protests until January
06:5123rd, 1958, when they united in a civic-military movement that saw the overthrow of Pérez Jiménez's
06:57government.
06:59After the fall of the military dictatorship, a democratic process began as a symbol of
07:04hope and the struggle for freedom.
07:09A transitional government junta is installed made up of political parties such as Acción
07:13Democrática, COPEI, and URD, which later betrayed the Venezuelan people after signing
07:18the so-called Punto Fijo Pact.
07:22After the pact, these parties perpetuated themselves in power for more than four decades
07:27through a pseudo-democracy and the alternation in office, resulting in the surrender of
07:31resources, political persecution, and extreme poverty.
07:38The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, OHA, denounced Thursday
07:44the humanitarian crisis in the Colombian region of Catatumbo and described it as the worst
07:49crisis in the country caused by clashes between armed groups since the signing of the peace
07:54treaty.
07:55Representatives of the humanitarian agency pointed out that in only one week there are
08:00at least 50,000 people affected by the violence in the zone, a situation that is growing rapidly
08:06in the country.
08:07The United Nations body also said that the crisis in the region was foreseen by the Ombudsman's
08:13office, which had declared on November 15, 2024, that the civilian population was under
08:19risk with the presence of illegal armed groups.
08:26Ecuador's Vice President Verónica Abad accused President Daniel Navarro of sedition on a
08:32letter addressed to the National Assembly, where she also demanded the censure of six
08:37office ministers.
08:38In addition, in the letter sent to the president in charge of the Assembly, Ester Cuesta Abad
08:44requested the censure of the vice president in charge, Cintia Galibert, for allegedly
08:49violating the exercise of the functions of the second in command of the republic.
08:54In this regard, Abad assured that the action constitutes a violation to her human rights
09:00and to the institutionality of the country.
09:02Furthermore, she asked to be received in the Assembly's General Commission during the
09:06next plenary session after the end of the legislative vacancy.
09:13And now we have a short break coming up, but first remember you can join us on TikTok at
09:17TELUS in English, where you'll find news in different formats, news updates and more.
09:22Ester with us.
09:52Welcome back to From the South.
09:53More than 31,000 people have been forced to flee their homes in Los Angeles, Western
09:58United States, as new fire rages in North Cascade.
10:02The fire, known as the Huge Fire, was declared on Wednesday morning and has already burned
10:07more than 2,000 hectares.
10:09Emergency and weather services warned last week that winds in Southern California were
10:14helping to fuel the flames.
10:16Ventura and Los Angeles County are under a red flag warning until Friday, and the Department
10:22of Education announced that more than 2,000 students had been evacuated from Cascade schools.
10:29The Huge Fire is now estimated to be over 9,400 acres with zero percent containment
10:38with no structures reported damaged or destroyed.
10:44We have over 4,000 firefighting personnel assigned to the incident, and we had a very
10:49robust ground and air response to the incident that you see behind me.
10:55What we have is that we have approximately 31,000 people who are affected by our evacuation
11:03orders, another 23,000 that are impacted by evacuation warnings.
11:11A massive wildfire was reported in the city of Ipacaraí in the Central Department of
11:16Paraguay along with other fires spreading nationwide.
11:19The firefighting force of Paraguay reported that the blaze started with three outbreaks
11:24in pastures in the Central Department of the South American nation and so far no injuries
11:30were reported.
11:31Meanwhile, the firefighters and the National Emergency Secretariat stated that the winds
11:36allowed the flames to spread rapidly and the drought made fire control more difficult.
11:42In addition, they highlighted the possibility that the fire was intentionally provoked by
11:46hunters of capybaras, lizards and other species of the region while the country's Animal
11:52Defense Department is working to rescue the endangered species to return them to their
11:57national habitat.
12:02The Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez assured on Thursday that his government would
12:06pay for the reconstruction of all the municipal buildings damaged by the passage of the cold
12:11drought.
12:12The Prime Minister explained that this will involve the restoration of municipal buildings
12:18and water infrastructures damaged with a total budget estimated at 2 billion 200 million
12:23euros.
12:24After meeting with the 28 majors of the most affected municipalities, Sánchez explained
12:29that 100% of the reconstruction will be financed.
12:33Nearly 100 administrative centers, 45 children's schools, 58 libraries, sports centers and
12:39markets will benefit from the program.
12:47Today I would like to publicly announce two new measures that we have shared in the meeting
12:51with the mayors concerned.
12:53The first of these measures is that the Spanish government will finance not 50 but 100% of
12:59the cost of rebuilding damaged municipal infrastructure.
13:04In Indonesia, the death toll from a landslide caused by heavy rains on Monday on the island
13:13of Java rose to 22.
13:15After restarting the search for missing people, Indonesian rescuers recovered four more bodies
13:20that had been buried by mud during the landslide.
13:23In this sense, rescuers continue to fight against adverse weather in search for possible
13:28survivors.
13:29On the other hand, according to reports, the natural disaster destroyed a total of about
13:3425 houses, a dam and three major bridges connecting villages in Pekolangan city.
13:41Meanwhile, local authorities ordered the evacuation of at least 300 people who were relocated
13:47to temporary shelters.
13:51Air pollution forced nearly 200 schools to close on Thursday in Thailand's capital, while
13:58officials urged people to work from home and restricted heavy vehicles in the city.
14:02According to the Swiss air quality technology company IQ Air, on Thursday, the Thai capital
14:08was the sixth most polluted major city in the world since the level of PM2.5 pollutants,
14:15which are cancer-causing microparticles, hit 122 micrograms per cubic meter in the city.
14:23Meanwhile, Bangkok authorities said earlier this week schools in areas with elevated levels
14:28of PM2.5 particles could close.
14:31Thus, by Thursday morning, 194 of the 437 schools under the Bangkok metropolitan area
14:39had shut their doors, affecting thousands of students.
14:43For its part, the government has announced incentives to reduce pollution levels as soon
14:48as possible.

15:22Welcome back to From the South.
15:47Israel's deadly raid in West Bank's Jenin has entered its third day with its forces
15:52issuing a forced evacuation threat to residents of the refugee camp in the city.
15:56In this context, hundreds of Palestinians have started leaving their homes on Thursday.
16:01Jenin Governor Kamal Abu Al-Roub told the press that the Zionist army has ordered the
16:07evacuations through loudspeakers and drone and military vehicles.
16:11Meanwhile, two Palestinian men were killed overnight in attacks by Israeli forces in
16:16Burkina, taking the death toll to 12 across Jenin Governorate in the first two days of
16:22large-scale raids, which are part of Israel's Iron Wall campaign, launched just days after
16:28a ceasefire in Gaza.
16:30The soldiers entered and started firing at us from four directions.
16:35We have young girls at home and I started screaming for them.
16:39I grabbed them and we went into the bedroom.
16:42We stayed there while the shooting got stronger.
16:44We started screaming.
16:45We didn't know what to do.
16:47We stayed put until the end.
16:49And when the bulldozers arrived for demolishing, we came outside with a white flag in hand.
16:57Winter weather and high food prices are worsening living conditions in the Gaza Strip despite
17:02an increase in humanitarian aid since the ceasefire took effect.
17:06Rain and cold inundated the Palestinian territories on Thursday, leaving tents floating in muddy
17:12puddles.
17:13Despite the Israeli ceasefire in Gaza, the living conditions of at least 2 million displaced
17:18people are still extreme due to the lack of food and other essential supplies.
17:23This combined with the impact of families who are living in the open due to the destruction
17:28of their homes by Israeli aggressions.
17:33We are suffering.
17:34We suffered during the war and during the truce.
17:36They raised the price of flour and food.
17:38There are no vegetables.
17:39If you go to buy a kilogram of tomatoes, they tell you it costs 13 shekels, and a kilogram
17:43of potatoes costs 13 shekels.
17:45My husband is sick and I have 10 relatives.
17:47I can't feed them or give them anything to drink.
17:49I can't bring them anything, and even if I went to northern Gaza, I couldn't get anything
17:53either.
17:57We are suffering a lot.
17:58Yesterday it rained on us and all the nylon fell on us, and all the blankets were flooded
18:03in the water while my daughters were sleeping.
18:05I carried them quickly, and we had to sleep here in the corner, me, my two daughters and
18:09my husband, and we stayed awake all night for fear of drowning more.
18:14In Spain, public education unions held the second strike of 12 days, a call in the Basque
18:20public education system to demand an improvement in working conditions.
18:24At least 30,000 teachers mobilized in the cities of Bilbao, Victoria and San Sebastian
18:30denouncing that the agreement on working conditions have not been updated for 15 years.
18:35For its part, the Department of Education reported that 82% of the public schools and
18:4048% of the teachers were present in the demonstrations.
18:45In this sense, the union denounced the abusive minimum services established by the Basque
18:50government, pointing out that the teachers sent a clear message to the education department.
19:01In Mexico, the New Great Museum of Chizan Itza presents more than a thousand pieces
19:11that highlight the architecture and cultural history of this pre-Hispanic site.
19:16Most of the collection is made up of original objects from the region since 1890.
19:22In this way, the museum seeks to be a model for future cultural initiatives, including
19:27workshops in the Mayan language.
19:30One of the archaeologists involved in the project, Octavio Juarez, highlighted the importance
19:35of the exhibits, which reflect the Mayan cosmovision of nature and death.
19:44Cuba prepares to celebrate the 33rd edition of the International Book Fair of Havana.
19:50The Cuban Book Institute announced that tickets are already on sale for the event, which will
19:55be held from February 13th to 23rd at the San Carlos de la Cabaña Fortress.
20:00With the premise, reading is growing.
20:03This year, the fair will have South Africa as its guest of honour and pay tribute to
20:07the writers Francisca López-Dibeira and Virgilio López-Lemus.
