00:00 Hello, welcome to Outlook. You are watching Matinee Idol with Girdharja, our weekly post-mortem
00:05 of the latest Bollywood release.
00:07 Today I will tell you why you should or should not watch the latest Hrithik Roshan starrer,
00:19 Superb 30.
00:25 The success of an underdog fighting against all odds stacked against him is a favourite
00:31 template for a hit movie across the world, simply because it offers the filmmakers an
00:35 opportunity to explore an entire gamut of emotions through the ups and downs in the
00:41 life of its protagonist.
00:43 Superb 30 is one such story of Bihar-based mathematician Anand Kumar, who sets up a pioneering
00:48 coaching institute Superb 30 to help children from the marginalized sections of society
00:54 crack the coveted IIT entrance examinations.
00:57 The film traces the journey of this gritty young man, who fails to make it to Cambridge
01:02 University because of financial constraints, but devotes the rest of his life to his mission.
01:07 The film was embroiled in many controversies in the run-up to its release. Questions were
01:12 raised over the selection of Hrithik Roshan as the main lead in this film, primarily because
01:16 of his looks. Critics had wondered if Hrithik, otherwise known to be the Greek god of Bollywood,
01:23 would be able to pull off the character of a Bihari mathematician with conviction. Murmurs
01:29 were also there over his accent in the film. Many had found his Bihari accent to be forced.
01:35 But to give credit to Hrithik Roshan, he has come up with flying colours, infusing life
01:40 and intensity into his character. At no point do you feel that there is a superstar playing
01:46 this character. He has gotten into the skin of this character very well.
01:51 Apart from Hrithik Roshan, Pankaj Tripathi as a scheming Bihar minister and Virendra
01:56 Saxena as Anand's father in the film are excellent. In supporting roles, Nandeej Singh
02:02 as Anand's brother and Mrinal Thakur as his love interest are also good. Aditya Srivastava
02:08 heading a coaching mafia and Amit Saad as a journalist have also done their part well.
02:14 The first half of the film is like a breeze, but the narrative slows down after an interval
02:18 because of its 154-minute length. The biggest drawback of this film is there is too much
02:24 dramatisation of the real events in the name of cinematic liberty, just like any other
02:30 average Bollywood biopic. Some scenes look totally contrived, especially one where the
02:35 super 30 students take on the gun-totting goon. I would like to give it 3 stars. If
02:40 not for anything else, this movie can be watched for the intensity of the long-drawn struggle
02:46 of Anand Kumar, the Bihar mathematician who happens to be one of the biggest agents of
02:51 change of our times.
