Adolescence series has revealed a phenomenon hiding in plain sight -- Manosphere and its community of men and boys.
Manosphere is an online space brimming with anti-feminist ideas, incel culture and misogyny. It promotes male supremacy at the cost of labelling women fundamentally different -- somehow inferior and definitely deserving of being penalized.
While the manosphere has become pervasive, entering our phones and minds - with or without consent - the show has brought out an important question: How do parents of teenagers know what’s going on with their children ? How do they assure that a seemingly normal childhood may not be so normal after all?

00:00It all comes down to Jamie's fit of rage when things start unravelling.
00:04We knew that Jamie murdered his classmate, but why?
00:08Up until now, it was difficult to believe that a 13-year-old boy
00:11who wears t-shirts that are too big for his narrow shoulders could commit such a crime.
00:16But suddenly, he transforms into an unhinged madman,
00:20slamming the table, throwing away his jacket,
00:22spitting words that his actions cannot be dictated by others.
00:26Jamie, in his attempts to salvage his low self-esteem,
00:28got influenced by the manosphere.
00:31Adolescence revealed a phenomena hiding in plain sight,
00:35manosphere and its community of men and boys.
00:38Welcome to Deep Dive with Outlook.
00:42I'm Annie, and today we will discuss the manosphere
00:45and how does influencer and rotate get into the picture.
00:48This show opens with the police violently invading 13-year-old Jamie's house
00:52at 6 in the morning.
00:54Jamie, visibly scared, struggles to find words,
00:57almost making us, as viewers, feel sad for a teenage boy
01:00who's dragged straight out of his bed to a lock-up.
01:04He's a rude kid.
01:06Jamie, why don't you tell us to be careful?
01:09But this sympathy quickly turns into shock
01:12when we see Jamie brutally murder a girl for calling him an insult.
01:16What scarier is that this incident, although fictional,
01:19is not limited to fiction.
01:21Stephen Graham, the co-creator of the show,
01:23said that he watched on news how incidents of young boys
01:26killing young girls are becoming common,
01:28which drove him to make a series to raise public awareness.
01:30What's happened in today's society
01:33where a young boy, and they are young boys,
01:38feel a need or this age or whatever it may be,
01:43you know, I'll never understand it,
01:45to kill a young girl, to stab a young girl to death.
01:50And I knew we were going to be making a series,
01:52so I said to Phil,
01:54this is the idea I'd like us to focus on.
01:57Researching about the show led him to dark places on the internet,
02:00called The Manosphere.
02:02Manosphere is an online space brimming with anti-feminist ideas,
02:05incel culture and misogyny.
02:07It promotes male supremacy at the cost of labelling
02:10women fundamentally different, somehow inferior
02:12and definitely deserving of being penalised.
02:15Young boys and teens take on platforms like Reddit and Instagram
02:18to find answers for why women reject them,
02:21how to lower women's self-esteem,
02:23how to benefit from it and how to be their most masculine self.
02:26But does this show have any real relevance?
02:29Apparently, The Manosphere is not all that hard to find.
02:32On the contrary, it is unavoidable.
02:34Even though some governments, like the Australian government,
02:37has banned social media usage until age 16,
02:39it may just not be enough.
02:41Young boys are becoming increasingly receptive to insult culture,
02:44since this sort of toxic masculinity
02:46gives them convincing answers
02:47as to why women avoid them.
02:49With this shift of blame,
02:51such irrelevant theories become easy to believe.
02:53This term incel is a short form for involuntarily celibate
02:56and is associated with men who are unable to attract women
03:00and harbour ill feelings for other men who can.
03:02What's worse is that celebrities and public figures
03:05personally benefit at the behest of this community of males.
03:09It gives rise to a host of self-designed influencers.
03:12This causation and correlation between Manosphere
03:14and the rise of popularity of influencers like Andrew Tate,
03:17who is an alleged rapist,
03:19and said that women belong indoors,
03:21can't drive,
03:21and are a man's property.
03:23I think my sister is her husband's property, yes.
03:26Such videos spreading violent misogyny materialize in real crime.
03:30Almost a month ago,
03:31a 26-year-old man,
03:32Kyle Clifford,
03:33committed triple murder
03:34of his ex-girlfriend,
03:36her sister,
03:37and mother.
03:38And in the lead-up to the crime,
03:39he watched videos by Andrew Tate.
03:41Now let's take a look at the gender-based violence in India.
03:44It's no secret that gender-based violence is rampant in India too.
03:47In the year 2021,
03:49India recorded the highest number of crime against women ever.
03:52Last month,
03:53a man killed his 17-year-old girlfriend in Uttar Pradesh,
03:56saying she was very proud of her beauty.
03:59In Maharashtra,
04:00a 20-year-old man raped a 10-year-old girl
04:03and threw her from the sixth floor.
04:05At last,
04:06how has the show fared?
04:07For what it's worth,
04:08the show has left an impact,
04:10bringing a virtual and intangible space of Manusphere
04:13to the very tangible conversation table,
04:16leading to decisive policies.
04:18UK has decided to add the show to the school curriculum
04:20as measure to tackle misogyny.
04:23The UK Prime Minister also spoke about
04:25how he felt watching the show
04:26as the father of two teenagers.
04:28As a dad,
04:29I have not found it easy viewing.
04:31We've been watching it with our children.
04:32My girl is 14.
04:35My boy is 16.
04:37And it's been really hard to watch.
04:40While the Manusphere has become pervasive,
04:42entering our phones and minds
04:43with or without consent,
04:45the show has brought out an important question.
04:48How do parents of teenagers
04:49know what's going on with their children?
04:51And how do they assure
04:52that a seemingly normal childhood
04:54may not be so normal after all?
