Influencers like Nara Smith, Hannah Neeleman, and Estee Williams are showing a picture-perfect life of staying at home, caring for their husbands and children, and making everything from scratch.
But what looks like a soft life is also part of a larger shift.
Some call it “choice feminism.” Others see it as a step back for women’s rights. As global politics shift to the right, and alpha male content rises online, the trad wife trend is being viewed as more than just a lifestyle.
It reflects how today’s society views gender roles, feminism, and what it means to be a “good woman.”
In India, the term may not be trending, but the expectations still exist – women juggling careers and home, while trying to be the “ideal wife.”
Is this balance, or backlash?

00:00Is conservatism back in fashion? From the bold brand embellished clothing of the 2010s
00:05to sun dresses and plain minimalistic clothing, women's fashion has had a full circle moment.
00:11This rise in conservatism can be seen in the form of the old money aesthetic as
00:16embodied by Sofia Richie and with the rise of the trad wives. This switch in fashion can also
00:21be associated to the overall political and socio-economic direction the world is heading
00:26in today. But is fashion related to politics? Of course. Fashion and politics have been interlinked
00:33since the start of time. As per Andrew Bolton, the head curator of the Anna Wintour Costume Center
00:38at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, fashion functions as a mirror to our times
00:43and is inherently political. Welcome to Deep Dive with Outlook.
00:49Today we'll be discussing the rise of the trad wives and what this trend means in the context of
00:53today's politics. When we think of the term trad wives, influencers such as Nara Smith, Hannah
00:59Neely-Min and S.T. Williams come to mind as they take their millions of followers through an
01:04aesthetically pleasing journey of staying at home, taking care of their husband and children and
01:08making every food item from scratch. But before these three influencers, there was Alina Kate Petit.
01:14Petit, who is considered the original trad wives, says she adopted the traditional
01:19wife concept in order to reject the girl boss ideal of the 2010s. However, in a detailed
01:25interview with the New Yorker, she revealed that the concept of a trad wife, which she embraced due
01:30to choice feminism, has now turned into its own monster. Since 2020, the concept of the trad wife
01:36has been revived through social media. The trend, which aims to reach women with an appeal to a softer
01:41life, has left netizens divided. While some believe it's an ideology championed by traditionalists who
01:47believe a woman's worth is tied to her submission to her husband, children and her home, others see
01:53it as a direct clash with the feminist movement that challenges oppressive structures which limit
01:58women's autonomy and potential. The trad wife trend also represents how today's politicians see the
02:03feminist movement. With an increasing shift to the right in global politics, many leaders have openly
02:08criticized feminism and have played a direct role in the backsliding of women's rights. In the digital
02:14sphere, we have seen a surge of alpha male content, ranging from TikToks, podcasts to the rise of
02:20influencers such as Andrew Tate. Many in the online space have embraced the manosphere, which in turn
02:25has aided the increase in misogyny and the backsliding of equality of the sexes. In Outlook's latest issue,
02:31we talk about the Netflix series Adolescence, which shows the influence of the manosphere on young boys
02:37and how it threatens the life and safety of young girls and women. While the concept of trad wives may not
02:43be directly related to the manosphere, it is often seen as a projection of the field's views on young
02:48women. This resurgence of traditional gender norms is also connected to the manosphere and presents the
02:54idea of what real men believe constitutes a good woman. According to S.T. Williams, who is one of the
03:00only influencers to openly embrace the tag of a trad wife, this concept has gained popularity due to the
03:05current culture where the distinction between man and woman is blurred and a whole generation of women
03:11is tired and burnt out from being both providers and homemakers. This is what happens when the
03:17pendulum swings so far one way. It has to come back down. And a lot of people believe the trad wife
03:24movement is an overcorrection to modern feminism. I do not believe that. I believe the trad wife
03:29movement is bringing balance back to families. Experts say that just as the manosphere views feminism
03:35as misandery, which is the hatred of men, trad wives also carry a misconstrued idea of feminism
03:41in which they believe women are not allowed to be homemakers, are not allowed to embrace their
03:45feminine side. While the manosphere aims to radicalize men and young boys and turn them into
03:51alphas and the man of the house, a trend like trad wives aims to reach young women and reinforce the
03:56ideas of embracing submission, taking us back to a time where women were viewed as their husbands' property.
04:02In India, the concept of a trad wife has not gained much prominence on social media, but this concept
04:08remains deep-rooted in Indian society. India still functions within the framework of a trad wife,
04:14as a large number of Indian women still have to work, come home and do all the household chores
04:19and be the good daughter-in-law, the good daughter and the good wife. While feminism works to empower women
04:25to make their own decisions, including that of being a homemaker, in the context, in the backsliding
04:30of women's rights today, the concept of a trad wife represents something far more dangerous for
04:35the future. Stay tuned to Outlook for more such explainers.
