00:28in the sistine chapel in front of all cardinals
00:31and the united nations warned that over two million gaston suffer daily from severe drinking
00:43water shortages hello and welcome to from the south my name is belen de los santos i'm from
00:54the news studios in havana cuba we begin with the news
00:57on the morning of may 9th a victory parade was held in moscow to commemorate the victory
01:16of the red army over nazi germany and the end of world war ii the event began after the arrival
01:23of president vladimir putin and other heads of state before the parade began president putin
01:28addressed the russian people with a speech paying tribute to the history and sacrifice of the
01:34soviet red army soldiers on the battlefields after this in honor of the fallen soviet soldiers
01:39a minute of silence was held military troops from various countries took part in this parade
01:44followed by several units of the legendary t-34 tank a symbol of the soviet victory
01:55and for more information on this we go once again live to our special envoy in moscow yunus sonner
02:02hello yunus tell us a little bit of what happened today and how it was lived there in moscow
02:08hello hello good evening from moscow it's a little bit getting dark slowly now we have almost eight
02:16o'clock local time uh it's the end of a very emotional day for the population of moscow and
02:24also for the population of russia in general we have been witnessing the military parade among the
02:30citizens of moscow and we asked them how they felt about it and they were really emotional because
02:36almost all of them had lost a family member in this great patriotic war as it's called here in russia or
02:46was called in the soviet union they were carrying photographies of these grand grandfathers who had
02:53sacrificed their lives in the fight in the war against fascist germany and they were remembering these
03:00family members and noteworthy there were a lot of very very young people who told us that they grew
03:07up with these stories how their grand grandfathers uh went to war how their families survived the
03:15hardship of war the siege of leningrad for instance the fighting in stalingrad they grew up with these
03:23stories and this was the day of remembering these stories again remembering their past the second
03:29very dominant um feeling was that they were felt united and they emphasized that this was a struggle
03:38of all the soviet people and they clearly and explicitly mentioned also for instance the ukrainian people
03:46as well as the belorussian people and other peoples of the soviet union and the third feeling they expressed
03:52to us very clearly was pride they were proud that their nation that their country had won this fight this
04:01war against nazi uh germany and they also felt very proud of more than uh 27 leaders i think that the
04:11last official number given by the russian agency is 27 leaders of different countries attending this
04:19ceremony that made them also proud and gave them the feeling of uh kind of being a leadership uh of the
04:28of a global struggle so this war these were the common emotions that we encountered at all corners
04:34among the russian uh population here in moscow you news you were speaking about the importance of unity
04:42at a day like today and also about this international component right a day of international solidarity as
04:49well with the presence of leaders worldwide but specifically leaders from the global south and from
04:55latin america in particular what can you tell us about how they were received what is the general
05:02feeling regarding the presence of leaders from our region over in russian soil oh that's something
05:10really noteworthy because as you know the presidents of cuba miguel diaz canel and the president of nicolas
05:17maduro have arrived here already days before they already held the ceremony yesterday at the statue of simon
05:25bolivar and today they obviously participated in the parade and they received a lot of applause from
05:31the spectators in the red square and besides that as correspondents of telesur we present themselves to
05:40the citizens of moscow before asking them for interviews or for statements and when we say that
05:46we are working for telescope they immediately say cuba and they say venezuela and they cheered us
05:53well they did not cheer us personally but they cheered our tv channel and the countries that we have the
06:01roots in as uh cuba and venezuela and they expressed their gratitude and also their respect for these
06:09countries resistance against today's uh attempts of domination and imperialism as cuba and venezuela have
06:17been one of the of two countries known worldwide of resisting imperialism and this is acknowledged
06:24a lot by the population of moscow we witnessed that uh when asking them and they combined actually this
06:34struggle this resistance of cuba and venezuela against u.s imperialism with the soviet resistance against
06:41uh fascist germany so they made a clear connection between that and uh they were very uh welcoming us
06:49in all the questions we asked and in all the interviews we made such nice stories to know about
06:56the friendship and solidarity not only of the world leaders but also among those peoples thank you so much
07:03unis for your report from the ground from moscow thank you and now we go to a short break and first
07:11you can join us on tick tock at tell us ringlish where you'll find news in different formats
07:15news updates and much more we'll be right back stay with us
07:33welcome back to from the south we continue with the information and in this case
07:41with the analysis of the relevance of this 80th anniversary of the soviet win the soviet victory
07:48over the nazi regime in 1945 and for that we now welcome hermelinda malcott international analyst
07:56thank you hermelinda for joining us here in from the south to go deeper into such an important topic
08:03i would like to start by asking you from a european perspective from europe what does this day mean
08:10as in terms of how it shaped the decades after that moment in 1945
08:17well it's a bit strange because we have some kind of uh schizophrenia in europe about that date
08:24actually the 9th of may has been converting the european day by the new uh commission european
08:30commission authorities because they don't want to align with the agenda of commemorating the end of
08:36fascism with the russians so we can see that there is some kind of um uh separation uh between europe and
08:44russia and it has been the case actually since a very long time and even since before the the the winning
08:52of the war by by units soviet union so the the project of separating europe from uh russia or the
09:00soviet union it's a very long project and nowadays we can see how far that project that is has been
09:06initiated by european imperialism but also by the united states how far that project that has been
09:14fomented since uh several decades has reached today so we have uh um several um uh person several uh
09:24presidents of prime minister from europe that has been going to russia but that are facing sanctions
09:31from the european institutions so it's a very strange day of course uh lots of uh anti-imperialist
09:38people are very proud of the victory of the soviet union and russia against fascism but we feel that
09:44we are against our own authorities on that subject of course and you were talking about that historical
09:52dispute that has also been brought about by this different narratives regarding the end of second
09:59world war and we see for example today this very important parade being held in russia with the presence
10:06of very relevant international world leaders how do you see this impacting or what does it mean
10:13in terms of how the global scenario today is positioning itself in in this context
10:22we are clearly seeing a reshaping of the uh international relations and of the
10:28force correlation in the world united states which has been the main imperialist countries
10:33for more than five six decades is really now losing its power and we are seeing how much uh the new
10:41world that is emerging today is it's is present in moscow today so we have seen that the total isolation
10:49in europe for example france for example is uh has been alone for his uh uh eight of may uh festivities and
10:58we see on contrast that russia is really uh having a huge uh diplomatic and international event of all of
11:05those countries that wants to uh on the same time uh construct a new world together and also who are
11:12knowing that they will have to construct it against uh the the aggression of uh european and united states
11:23imperialism so it's a new shaping of the world a new diplomacy a new institution that are working today
11:29together
11:32it's very insightful also to understand the tensions of course that have to do with the present moment
11:39and you you were talking before about this project of separating europe from russia and of course
11:46its historical roots how do you see the years to come because of course also the arrival to a second
11:53term of u.s president donald trump and its own tensions with europe has put europe on a very tight spot
12:01regarding its relations both with united states and also with russia how do you see this affecting the
12:09years to come well it will be a very schizophrenic process again uh i see uh europe in a very strange
12:17position because um we have to understand that european institutions it's not a european creation
12:23it's a united states creation so uh cutting the the the cutting the relation with united states would be
12:31quite difficult so europe is trying to to enter a little bit into that new multipolar world but
12:38would not have all the means to do because it has that quasi-colonial relation with the united states and
12:45also because europe is uh it's a it's a conjunction of imperialism and imperialism is very incompatible with
12:53what we want we are trying to construct into the multipolar world so it will be a very difficult position
12:59we also can see that europe is um actively uh separating itself from the euro asian continent
13:07at the same time in what it wants to construct the relation with the euro is in continents so uh what
13:14i fear the most is that on the day of the 9th of may uh we can see that europe is really uh cultivating
13:22uh some fascist elements into its continent we can see it obviously in ukraine and in the baltic
13:28countries but also we have to remember that uh and we have to read all the biography that has been
13:34produced the last day for example of the family of us 11 delay and president of the european commission
13:40which has a long history with nazism the history of the family of the new chancellor of germany which
13:48has also a long history with fascism the history of the the french president which has a long uh
13:56relation with the financial sector which also has a huge uh relation with fascism and nazism in europe so
14:04it's very interesting on those um days to understand that uh the the huge contradiction europe will be
14:11in in wanting to rejoin the multipolar world but being an imperialist country and having so strong
14:18relations with fascism it will be extremely complicated for it so uh i think that what will change uh the thing
14:26here is that if we don't have popular movement that are pushing for real multiplayer world europe will be
14:33stuck in the united states uh influence and won't be able to to do anything else that's being mostly
14:40some kind of colony of the united states definitely such a relevant day to think about these challenges
14:47to come thank you so much ermelinda for joining us here in from the south thank you very much for
14:54inviting me that was ermelinda melcott international analyst in from the south analyzing the significance of

15:35welcome back to from the south the newly elected pope leo 14th officiated the first mass of his
16:03pontificate and the 16 chapel to find out more on this first day of the new leadership of the catholic
16:09church let's go to our special envoy in the vatican jorge gestoso with the latest news over there
16:17thank you leo 14 was celebrating a mass this morning as pope for the first time
16:25and it did so in the 16 chapel attended by the 133 cardinals that were selecting him and mostly his message
16:37in the homily was that he was being selected to bring with him a church and cross and he was expected
16:47that those cardinals walk with him with that cross he was denouncing the lack of faith in the world he
16:56said that mostly the catholic church and the catholics itself they need to shine by the commitment to the
17:05to the church and not by the material buildings around them it was a criticism of the materialistic
17:14world and the lack of principles in a way that he was mentioning he was also putting emphasis in his
17:23relationship with the rest of the world and what we have known is that he has been a very close ally of
17:31pope francis so much so that he was spending 24 years of his life in peru he was 30 when he arrived
17:42there as a missionary and the diocese of chiclayo he was there in his commitment and when yesterday he was
17:53giving his benediction in that balcony for the first time he turned to spanish because he was talking in
18:02english he was talking in latin and also in spanish and he was saluting his diocese of chiclayo
18:12and all the commitment of that people was the first time that we saw the pope already talking
18:18about the language and mentioning that he's really sharing the commitment to the church that was
18:26emphasized by pope francis like a reformist meaning social justice meaning taking care of migrants and
18:35the most vulnerable people and the most vulnerable people people left by aside he was also mentioning
18:41that he's into dialogue building bridges and trying to put away all violence that is all over the world
18:50today so mostly what the conclusion of the all the analysts that are uh observing what's going on they
18:57say in reality it was the big victory of pope francis in a way directly or indirectly was pope francis who
19:08really was elected him as his successor so uh leon 14 is expected to have uh another activities not today
19:20but most definitely is uh is going to have a very very heavy agenda in the coming days
19:26we get back to you now thank you jorge for all the information in this relevant day for the catholic
19:34church from the vatican city now we continue with other topics
19:56united nations warned that over two million gassons suffer daily from severe drinking water shortages
20:02the u.n special rapporteur on the human rights to safe drinking water and sanitation pedro agudo
20:08reported israeli military operations had destroyed over 70 percent of the water system the human rights
20:14expert further noted that this condition had prevented access to pumping drinking water labeling the situation
20:21as a time bomb likewise the diplomat highlighted that the vast majority of the population had received
20:27a minimal water amount and in some cases they had been given contaminated water which posed a great threat
