00:00Across France are thousands of magnificent chateaux.
00:06Many are in a state of disrepair.
00:10Terry, where's the water in here?
00:14Now they're being given a new lease of life by courageous owners.
00:19I'm giving you a hug.
00:21Who are taking on the challenge...
00:24It was better I would first start it, it just got worse and worse.
00:27...to transform these unloved buildings...
00:31Where do we start?
00:33...into glamorous new homes...
00:35What a transformation, loving it.
00:38...and event venues.
00:40I will announce you, husband and wife.
00:43One, two, three.
00:44...there'll be ups...
00:45It looks nice, doesn't it?
00:48...and downs.
00:49Having some real issues.
00:51It's the same rock that the house is made out of.
00:53But however tough it gets...
00:56It needs to come much forward.
00:57Yeah, I know.
00:59Those who decide to move here...
01:02Cheers to a new life in a new shuttle.
01:05...get to live the dream.
01:08Oh, look at that.
01:09Quite a staircase.
01:10...as custodians of their very own castle.
01:14Today...
01:17Major technical difficulties could bring an end to a huge renovation.
01:25Do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do.
01:27I actually don't know.
01:29Could be too tight.
01:32Yeah.
01:34Working on a chateau scale forces one owner further than he's been before.
01:39Well, we're putting in double rails because the height's so big.
01:44And these brothers are on the hunt for the dream family chateau.
01:49Absolutely amazing place.
01:51Like, driving up and seeing this from behind the trees.
01:53Fantastic potential.
01:54Surrounded by the lush hills of the Dordogne stands the 14th century Domaine de la Barde.
02:08With 32 splendid rooms.
02:1610 acres.
02:18Formal gardens.
02:20And several outbuildings.
02:23It's now the family home of Tim, Chris and their two sons, Owen and Ollie.
02:31It's a very, very handsome house.
02:33Yeah.
02:33He's got good bones.
02:34I think my favourite part of the day is the morning, waking up and opening the shutters
02:40and looking into this beautiful French garden that we created.
02:45That's really magical for me.
02:47Just a hundred miles east of Bordeaux, in the market town of Le Bug, Tim and Chris bought
02:59the abandoned hotel in 2020.
03:03And after a lot of hard work, now offer accommodation for up to 25 guests.
03:10The last time we saw them, Tim and his mate Steve were working on the chateau's enormous 90-square-metre
03:20orangery.
03:23It's been used as a gym, spa and more lately, for storage.
03:29And now it's on its way to becoming an event space.
03:33At the moment, it's just a big, empty room.
03:36We would like to have a reception area or just another usable space that we can add to the property.
03:44Much progress was made.
03:47Well done.
03:48This is brilliant.
03:49Until heavy rain stopped play.
03:52Today, though, the forecast is looking sunny.
04:01The orangery is drying out.
04:03I can get on and do some more work.
04:05I'd really like to get in and start cleaning it now and start to put some paint on the walls.
04:14I want it to be very multi-use.
04:16So I'm thinking I'm just going to paint it very bright, very white, very light, and just have a big, big, bright, open space.
04:29Tim has a lot of painting ahead of him.
04:33Luckily, he's got a new toy to help.
04:37A friend's lent me his sprayer, but I haven't done it before, so I'm going to have to, you know, a bit of trial and error until I get the hang of it.
04:44But it should be pretty straightforward.
04:51I should be able to get this whole ceiling done in kind of two hours as opposed to sort of four days.
04:57So hopefully it saves me a lot of time.
05:02Once the paint's thinned, all Tim has to do is switch it on and start turning the walls white.
05:14Or not.
05:23Do-do-do-do-do-do-do-do.
05:26I don't know.
05:28I actually don't know.
05:29Could it be too tight?
05:32I just feel like if I loosen that off too much.
05:35Yeah, that's what I thought.
05:42Maybe the nozzle's blocked.
05:45It hasn't been cleaned, maybe.
05:46I think the nozzle was blocked.
05:53This is all going a bit well now, isn't it?
06:10Three hours later, it's not just the ceiling that's well covered.
06:15The paint sprayer may have worked well, but with half the building still to complete, and Tim covered in paint, this masterpiece is nowhere near finished.
06:40Amidst the rolling fields of southwest France, sits the stunning 17th century Chateau de Saigonvie.
06:56With six acres, 42 majestic rooms, and no fewer than four towers, in 2018, it captured the hearts of music teacher Becky and civil engineer Mark, who bought the place for £645,000.
07:20It is absolutely stunning here.
07:24It's a beautiful home, and the views are just to die for.
07:28It's the wow factor.
07:30It is absolutely breathtaking.
07:32Located an hour's drive from Toulouse, the couple have been steadily transforming the Chateau into a family home for themselves, daughters Sophia and Charlotte, and Becky's dad, George.
07:53For Mark, work on the Chateau is a constant juggle with his engineering career.
08:00I still work overseas, and I'm currently based in Saudi Arabia, in order for us to be able to fund the property here.
08:08It is a little tough at times.
08:11Obviously, it's heart-wrenching leaving Becky and the girls and knowing that it's going to be an extended period of time before I see them again.
08:19Last time we saw them, Mark and Becky had reached the end of a year-long labour of love.
08:28It really is quite spectacular to see it all come in.
08:31Suddenly, it's looking like a staircase.
08:33The renovation of a formerly derelict outbuilding into a beautifully designed self-catering gite.
08:43This has been quite a chapter.
08:45It's almost like a book on its own.
08:48And I think we're both quite relieved and pleased to be seeing the end of this one.
08:53When you live in a grand chateau, you need a proper boot room.
09:00And that's Becky and Mark's next project.
09:06Once we've put a bench in here, it's going to be wonderful for just being able to sort of sit and take your wellies off, hang up your coats.
09:14And when guests come in, they'll be able to do the same.
09:17With workman Cyril, Mark's first task is to start on a partition wall, to divide up the boot room and a new downstairs loo.
09:35Like everything in the chateau, the space is on a grand scale.
09:41The ceiling comes in at a lofty 3.5 metres.
09:44We're putting in double rails because the height's so big.
09:51My background is civil engineering.
09:53I enjoy it.
09:54Making sure the calculations are right, making sure the measurements are right.
09:58It's really good.
09:58Really good.
09:59Really pleased to see this happening.
10:01This is transforming this room already.
10:05Good stuff.
10:08For Becky, times like these are precious.
10:12I always love having Mark here to help me get on with things and also help make decisions as we go.
10:19It can be quite tough sometimes.
10:22But the end plan is that he's going to sort of be able to afford to come be here permanently.
10:29And hopefully it won't be too much longer.
10:31Next door, with the framework up, it's time for the plasterboard.
10:41And the first piece fits like a glove.
10:46C'est bon, hein?
10:47C'est bon?
10:48Oui, oui.
10:48Ah, super.
10:49So there you go.
10:50There's the expertise of the engineer.
10:53I'm claiming all the credit for that.
10:55It doesn't take long for it to take shape, does it, when you throw those up?
11:12They may have kicked things off in the boot room,
11:15but there's still a huge amount left to do before this room reaches its full potential.
11:27Coming up, these brothers begin the quest for an opulent chateau that can house both their families.
11:36First chateau.
11:38Chateau number one.
11:38While Becky gets to grips with something she hasn't done in over 30 years.
11:44It's fantastic that we're doing this transformation in this room, because it was a horrible mess.
11:57There are over 40,000 chateaux spread across France.
12:03And for some, owning one is a lifelong dream.
12:08Brothers Will and Richard want to create a shared family home in the country they fell in love with as children.
12:19Our family holiday every year was take the trailer tent down to the Dordogne, somewhere in the south of France,
12:26and we've kind of just fallen in love with the lifestyle and just the country, the way of life is brilliant.
12:33We've talked about it long enough.
12:35It's got to the point where the kids are saying, are you actually going to do this?
12:38And when is it going to happen?
12:40Construction manager Will and marketing company director Richard have a joint budget of £680,000 to find a home big enough for both their families, as well as space for Gitte.
13:00I'm really looking for outbuildings that we can convert, have business potential from them, not too much to do with the main chateau itself.
13:10The main thing for us is if we're going to have a way of living together, sharing the kind of next stages of our kind of life,
13:19where there's space enough for us to share those moments and space enough to get away from each other when we don't want to share those moments.
13:27That's the important part.
13:28Yeah.
13:30Cheers.
13:31Happy chateau.
13:32The brothers will be visiting four chateaux on this trip, starting in western France, an hour inland from La Rochelle.
13:41Their first appointment is the gorgeous 19th century Chateau de Pignan.
13:51This grand residence presides over several acres, and with eight bedrooms, there's plenty of space.
14:02First chateau.
14:04Chateau number one.
14:05Yeah, nice.
14:07Nice.
14:09Let's go.
14:11It's on the market for £679,000, just shy of their maximum budget.
14:21Hi.
14:22Richard.
14:23Hi, nice to meet you.
14:24Will.
14:24I'm Matthew.
14:25Nice to meet you.
14:26Welcome to Chateau de Pignan.
14:28Showing them round is Agent Matthew.
14:31The original house was built in 1612, and then it was rebuilt in the 19th century.
14:37And you've got two large barns, so you could have that converted into sheets or accommodation, if that's what you're looking for.
14:44That's a text box, isn't it?
14:45Yeah, nice.
14:46Sheet conversion potential.
14:48Nice.
14:48Can't wait to go inside.
14:49Yeah, great.
14:49Fantastic.
14:50Lead the way.
14:51So, we're coming to the original entrance hall, so you've got lovely flags, stone floor.
14:58Love the staircases.
14:59Which curves all the way up to the top floor.
15:02So, it's basically a statement.
15:04Yeah, very much so.
15:05This side is a reception room.
15:07Nice.
15:08And then coming through this way, this is the kitchen dining room.
15:13Yeah.
15:13And the option here would be to either keep this as a kitchen, but maybe take that wall down.
15:18It's only a partition.
15:21So, they knock on the wall.
15:24With two staircases and another reception room.
15:28Nice marble fireplaces, south-facing, so it's bright and light.
15:33As well as a potential second kitchen at the other end of the building, this chateau could certainly house two families.
15:42Amazing.
15:44Absolutely amazing place.
15:45Like, driving up and seeing this from behind the trees.
15:48Absolutely amazing.
15:49Fantastic potential.
15:50Really, really great.
15:52But with the upstairs and outside yet to explore, there's still a lot more left to see.
16:03Over 100 miles south, Tim's finished spray-painting the orangery
16:10and is moving on to some creative carpentry.
16:15We haven't got masses of storage, so I want to keep these bays as storage,
16:19but they're very unsightly.
16:21I need to hide them.
16:22Easiest way that I can do something fairly permanent and solid
16:26is just to sort of make some doors.
16:29It's the first time for me, this, so we'll see how this goes.
16:32In light of the recent extreme weather, Tim needs to future-proof his design.
16:41Because it did flood in here, I don't want to make them kind of flush with the ground.
16:45If I've got them lifted an inch, then at least they're not going to soak all that up
16:49and bow and go extremely wrong.
16:51Yeah, that works.
17:14I can start putting my doors together now.
17:18I've already bought ply pre-cut, so now all I really want to do is add a bit of detail to them.
17:24It shouldn't be too complicated.
17:26As a trained chef, Tim is used to precise measurements,
17:31but this is a little different.
17:35I think that's the look we're going for.
17:38I'm thinking just when it's all painted, it should look OK.
17:41I've got to let that dry now.
17:54Ever multitasking, he takes the chance to tackle the stair handrail.
18:04Most people would probably see this as quite a tedious job,
18:08but I find it a good way to unwind.
18:11Three, two, one.
18:23Finished.
18:26So the paint's dried.
18:29I just want to pop the hinges on, stick them on the frames,
18:32and my work is complete.
18:34Like many jobs around the chateau,
18:42Tim's not only had to work out how to do it,
18:46but how to do it by himself.
18:52A cupboard door works right.
18:56Just another six to go.
18:58Yeah.
19:05Hello.
19:07Wow.
19:08Yeah, yeah.
19:09They look very modern, don't they?
19:11I've got a bit of adjusting to do,
19:13but I think they're all right.
19:15I think they'll work.
19:16The doors look really, really beautiful.
19:19It looks really modern, clean,
19:21and it looks like a master carpenter has created them or built them.
19:26Doesn't it?
19:27Almost finished.
19:29Mm.
19:29Almost finished.
19:32The end might feel near,
19:34but when it comes to final fixtures,
19:38storm clouds are gathering ahead.
19:40In south-west France,
19:49Becky has roped in 13-year-old daughter Sophia
19:53to pitch in with their new downstairs loo and boot room.
19:59Now plasterboarded and painted,
20:02today their task is wallpapering.
20:05The very last time I did real wallpapering,
20:11I was about the same age as Sophia.
20:13Things have changed a lot since the 80s.
20:16Right, shall I show you what we're going to do?
20:18Are you happy to do it?
20:20OK, so we're going to go in.
20:22Yeah.
20:23And we're literally doing that Sophia.
20:28To help with application,
20:31the paste is pink when wet,
20:33then dries clear.
20:35Yep.
20:36And there's more there.
20:40Try not to get it all over your clothing.
20:43It's fantastic that we're doing this transformation in this room
20:46because it was a horrible mess.
20:50Right, take it all the way to the very top.
20:54That's it.
20:56And line it up with the ceiling.
21:01Whilst Becky and Sophia battle on with the wallpaper,
21:04is it right in at the edge?
21:08Outside, Sophia's sister Charlotte and Grandpa George...
21:13Right, shall we go to the chickens?
21:15Yeah.
21:15Come on.
21:16..are foraging for breakfast.
21:20Right, come on, girls!
21:21Where are you?
21:22Can you check how many eggs there are, please, Charlotte?
21:28All right, no problem.
21:31How many are there, Charlotte?
21:33Ten!
21:34Oh, come on!
21:35How many, really?
21:36Seven.
21:38You can't count.
21:39One, two, three...
21:40Hey, they're big, aren't they?
21:41Look at that.
21:42Look at the colour on there.
21:44OK, scrambled eggs for breakfast.
21:46Can I catch them?
21:48No, out.
21:49Not escaping.
21:50No, you're not coming with us, Choo-choo.
21:52Becky and Sophia's wallpaper is now complete,
21:59so Mark and workman Cyril can tackle some carpentry in the bootroom.
22:04We're going to start with building out our frame
22:08for both the bench seat and for the panelling that will go in.
22:15We've got a good feeling about this.
22:17The plan is to clad the walls in pine
22:20to create a backdrop to some built-in seating.
22:25Hammer's at the ready.
22:37OK, that's secure.
22:42The last bit goes in.
22:44Ceremonial now.
22:53Perfect.
22:54Mark may be buoyed up,
22:57but with a whole toilet suite still to fit
22:59and lots to build,
23:02he won't be able to down tools just yet.
23:06Up next,
23:12Will and Rich get a step closer
23:14to realising their chateau dream.
23:17It feels very French, very idyllic.
23:19I think it's amazing,
23:21and it's got so much potential.
23:24And Tim has a big job to handle on his own.
23:28This kind of feels like a two-man job now.
23:30I think it's like 35, 40 kilos,
23:32but it may be not.
23:32In the Dordogne,
23:42in the Domaine de la Barde Orangery,
23:46it's out with the old
23:49and in with the new.
23:52So we're really sort of pushing
23:59to the end of the orangery now.
24:01It's getting there.
24:02I've got some nice old raw iron effect lights.
24:05They're very heavy,
24:06but we'll give off a lot more light.
24:08The bracket's in,
24:09so that should take the weight.
24:12This kind of feels like a two-man job now,
24:14where I've got to get that very heavy light up here,
24:18balance it,
24:19somehow support it up there
24:20while I kind of connect it.
24:22I think it's like 35, 40 kilos,
24:25but it may be more.
24:29With no-one around to pitch in,
24:34Tim's forced to fly solo.
24:36Fingers crossed this all goes very, very easily.
24:47I'm already knackered.
24:48With plans for the Orangery to host events,
24:59Tim is after statement lighting.
25:02But at 40 kilos,
25:05it might be too much to bear.
25:08He can only hope the bracket and chain are strong enough.
25:35And there is only one way to find out.
25:38I keep forgetting how heavy it is.
25:46All right, I'm going to take the weight of it
25:47and then sort of try and push the scaffolding out
25:49from under it and see what happens.
25:58Well, who wants to go that way again?
26:00At last, Tim can step back
26:02and see the overall effect.
26:05What do you think?
26:05It must be high.
26:10Might be all right.
26:11Might be all right.
26:11I think I probably want a bit less chain
26:13if I was being hypercritical.
26:17Yeah.
26:19Other than that, perfect.
26:24And for the final test...
26:28Yay!
26:31Orangery is now complete with a chandelier.
26:34I've got a couple of matching wall lights to put up,
26:37so that'll key it all in nicely.
26:40I hear the lunch bells ringing.
26:43So, um, not a bad morning's work.
26:48Before the Orangery can be signed off, though,
26:52Tim's got a plan to indulge his artistic licence
26:55on a final decorative touch.
27:05Back in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region,
27:08brothers Will and Richard
27:10are searching for a shared family home and business.
27:15So let's go and have a look upstairs.
27:16OK.
27:16So far, Chateau-Pignot is hitting the spot.
27:22This is the original staircase.
27:24It's amazing, isn't it?
27:25It goes right to the top.
27:25Metal's been...
27:26Yeah.
27:26It comes straight out onto a good-sized landing
27:29and a great view this way out across the field.
27:34Yeah.
27:34Oh, yeah, lovely view.
27:35Really nice.
27:38Upstairs are eight bedrooms
27:40and potential to divide the space
27:42between their two families.
27:47So when we downstairs in the kitchen...
27:48Yeah.
27:48..there was another staircase
27:49that leads up into this space.
27:52OK.
27:53So you can imagine a door there
27:55would close this end off...
27:57Yeah, completely.
27:58..completely,
27:58and you've then got two bedrooms,
28:00both with really good views.
28:01Yeah.
28:02You've got a loo and a bath,
28:03as well as the stairs going back down to the ground floor.
28:06Yeah, so self-contained, just...
28:07Yeah, if you wanted to chop it off.
28:09Yeah.
28:11With the interior ticking boxes,
28:13they head down to size up the outside.
28:17So the outbuildings are still from 1612.
28:19Right, OK.
28:20And this is where the kitchen used to be.
28:21So you've got the well...
28:22Old well.
28:23..and through here...
28:25Oh, wow.
28:25..the original bread oven.
28:26Oh, brilliant.
28:27And this is all, as far as you know, working.
28:30When the roof was redone, they left the chimney.
28:32So you could, with a little bit of effort,
28:34just tidy it up and then use it for pizzas.
28:37Might need a bit of a clean with all the pizzas going.
28:40This first visit has given Will and Richard plenty of food for thought.
28:45Love it.
28:46Really great.
28:47Should have bought your swimmers.
28:48And at £679,000...
28:53OK.
28:53Thank you so much.
28:53Thank you very much.
28:54Thank you very much.
28:56It's just under budget.
28:58I think it's amazing, and it's got so much potential,
29:04but there's something missing,
29:05and I just can't put my finger on it at the moment.
29:07Yeah, I know what you mean.
29:07I think it feels very French, very idyllic.
29:10It feels like you're going on a holiday in France,
29:12which is what our guests would want to have.
29:14Mm-hmm.
29:14I guess it works from a kind of business approach point of view,
29:17but maybe less so from a living point of view.
29:22They're not sold just yet,
29:24but they still have three more chateaux to view.
29:29OK.
29:29There we go.
29:33The next stop is two hours' drive away,
29:38near the dardorned village of Milac de Nontrand.
29:43In the Parigas-Limousin National Park
29:45stands the impressive 18th-century Domaine de Maumont.
29:52Nice.
29:53Well, it's certainly large.
29:56Yeah, yeah, yeah.
29:57Surrounded by a five-and-a-half-acre estate,
30:02the house hosts 14 rooms,
30:08outbuildings,
30:12and a large terrace.
30:16It's currently on the market well under budget
30:19at £580,000.
30:23Hello.
30:24Bonjour.
30:25I'm Richard.
30:26Nice to meet you, Richard.
30:27I'm Natalie.
30:28Nice to meet you.
30:29Nice to meet you.
30:30Hello.
30:31Agent Natalie will be showing them around.
30:36Welcome.
30:37Come in.
30:39Excellent.
30:40Nice.
30:40Like the tiles on the floor.
30:41Yeah.
30:42A very nice old floor,
30:43a very beautiful wooden staircase.
30:46That's incredibly old, isn't it?
30:48Yeah.
30:48Yeah.
30:49OK.
30:49That's some serious taxidermy up there, isn't it?
30:54Yeah.
30:54Oh, dear.
30:55So this is the private kitchen, dining room.
31:00Really nice double aspects.
31:02Really airy in here, isn't it?
31:03Yeah.
31:03And these are new windows as well.
31:05Yes.
31:06Lovely beams.
31:07Really nice aspects.
31:08Really nice.
31:09Like the first chateau,
31:11this property has the potential to be divided.
31:15So we have the second kitchen or something?
31:18Yeah.
31:19Second kitchen.
31:19Second dining room.
31:21Yeah.
31:22If we were ever to split it into east and west wing,
31:24we've already got two kitchens already in place.
31:27Yeah.
31:27We don't argue over who has which one.
31:28The downstairs is delivering on space so far.
31:33And there's still a lot more of this chateau for them to fight over.
31:46180 miles away in southwest France,
31:49Becky and Mark have made great strides
31:52in transforming an old storage room into two distinct spaces.
31:57We've managed to complete the cloakroom grunt work.
32:02And then with the toilet behind it,
32:04we have just about finished.
32:07Sophia has done a tremendous job on the wallpapering,
32:12the lures in place, the wash hand basin in place,
32:15the steps are done.
32:16Really pleased with it.
32:17I love the colours.
32:19Today, Becky plans to finish the last of the decorating.
32:23It's a joy to be getting this little room painted up
32:29and looking beautiful.
32:30It's been a while since it's been derelict.
32:33It's a nice manageable size that I was able to get on
32:36and do a lot of it myself, which is always good.
32:41Meanwhile, Mark is adding a cloakroom essential.
32:45Hopefully, this will work.
32:49There we go. Functioning.
32:53Good roll.
32:54Done.
32:56And Becky can now add some inspired details
32:59to bring the spaces to life.
33:02You can put those under there like that.
33:05It's an old lump.
33:07I thought it might work.
33:16So, have something nice to lean up against,
33:20make it comfortable.
33:28Very pleased.
33:30Now I've got to get the girls to use it.
33:32Stop dumping their shoes in the hallway.
33:35Four months ago, this was a single, abandoned
33:39and unused storage room.
33:44Now, it's been transformed into two chic
33:48and practical spaces.
33:51In the stylish family boot room,
33:54Mark's bespoke panelling defines the area.
33:58And built-in seating provides much-needed shoe storage.
34:03The blue and white colour scheme
34:06lends a freshness and airiness to the space
34:10and soft furnishings give it a cosy touch.
34:15At the rear, behind the new stud wall,
34:19now lies an elegant downstairs loo,
34:23where refined period fittings
34:25are set off by a beautifully papered feature wall,
34:30adding depth and interest.
34:34Their daughter, Sophia,
34:35has come to see the finished result.
34:38Wow.
34:39Oh, oh, wow.
34:40So you've got a box each
34:42for putting your shoes into.
34:45That's cool.
34:45And then we can put all of our coats and things in here.
34:48But aren't the windows fabulous?
34:50It's such a lovely little room, actually.
34:53Yeah, now with the light coming in, it's super.
34:57I think the best bit is my wallpapering.
35:01I think when we started this,
35:04we really weren't sure how splitting the room
35:06was going to work.
35:08And actually, it's come out incredibly well.
35:11This is a tremendous transformation.
35:13And to think that this room was probably not used
35:15in 60-plus years,
35:16it's nice to bring it back to life again.
35:20It's taken a lot of hard work,
35:22but the family have gained
35:24two stunning practical spaces
35:27that will now be an essential part of chateau life.
35:32Still to come,
35:38Tim counts on his children's bath toys
35:41to give his latest project a touch of class.
35:45I'm hoping I will just mix up different colours
35:47and it will all come to fruition.
35:52While chateau shoppers Will and Rich
35:54are forced to face a major problem head on.
35:57It's quite challenging to look past
36:00some of the way that it's dressed.
36:02The taxidermy is substantial.
36:11In the Dardogne,
36:13potential buyers Will and Richard
36:15are continuing their tour
36:17of the 18th century Domaine de Montmont.
36:21So, living room.
36:23So, this is obviously just panelling
36:28straight over the top of the ceiling.
36:30Must be.
36:31Not a massive fan of the panelling on the ceiling,
36:32but it's, you know, easy enough to sort.
36:36The last thing you want to do is
36:37take the panelling down
36:38and half the ceiling with it.
36:39No, it's true.
36:43Upstairs, the chateau has eight en suite bedrooms.
36:47So, the bedroom.
36:50Oh, really light.
36:51With cupboards, which is nice.
36:53And, again, I think...
36:55High ceilings.
36:56Yeah, high ceilings.
36:58Good size.
36:59Really good size.
37:00Just really nice.
37:00It's a big room.
37:03OK, this room is a rather large room,
37:07but used as a storage room.
37:09It's the linen room at the moment.
37:10Laundry room.
37:11Yeah, for him it's a laundry room.
37:14But it has also a bathroom,
37:16which is a pretty nice bathroom.
37:20Rather big.
37:21OK.
37:22Double sinks.
37:23Yeah, double sinks, indeed.
37:26Interesting archway.
37:28I thought I was looking at that
37:28and I thought that was a mirror.
37:30Oh, no, that's horrible.
37:31If I stand here like this,
37:33we look like the same person.
37:35So, another bedroom.
37:38In terms of the space, it's great.
37:41I think in terms of viewing it,
37:42it's quite challenging to look past
37:44some of the way that it's dressed.
37:46The taxidermy is substantial.
37:49Will and Rich may not be sold on the inside,
37:52but they've yet to see what the grounds have in store.
37:58Let's go to the terrace,
37:59then we have an overview of the property, the lands.
38:05It's a great terrace.
38:06Because you can have 120 people sitting.
38:08120?
38:09120.
38:09120.
38:10Wow.
38:10OK.
38:10That's what they already did.
38:12I don't think I know that many people.
38:12With a bar.
38:13With a bar.
38:14That's true.
38:14A barbecue, as you see.
38:16And with this beautiful view.
38:18It's enormous, isn't it?
38:19Lovely.
38:22The brothers have a lot to consider.
38:25Lovely to meet you.
38:25It's been lovely to meet you.
38:27Thank you very much.
38:27Thank you very much.
38:28Especially, as at £580,000,
38:32the property is £100,000 under budget.
38:37There's a lot of potential there
38:39to make it something that would be ours.
38:42We're sat in probably the best feature of the property.
38:46We probably just need to have a bit of a think about,
38:48well, this is great, but how does the main property work for us?
38:51I think that's the challenge.
38:56They've seen two very different chateaux so far.
39:00But with a further two to view,
39:02they don't need to decide just yet.
39:11Just a hop away in the Dardogne,
39:14the sun is out.
39:17Morning, fish.
39:18And Tim is hoping to finally
39:20tick a very big job off his to-do list.
39:25The chateau's enormous, five-metre-high orangery.
39:30He has spruced up the area outside,
39:33and he's made progress inside too.
39:36I've got the floor painted now.
39:38That's all nice and clean.
39:39The stairs are painted.
39:41I've cleaned all the windows.
39:44So we're pretty much there.
39:45It's all looking good.
39:46But I've got one big wall that's a horrible big block of white.
39:49It's the first thing you see as you walk down the garden path.
39:52So I'm thinking, as it's an orangery,
39:54I will try to paint an orange tree.
39:59Oh, God.
40:00This is going to be cool.
40:04This is going to be very straightforward and simple,
40:06and I hope the effect is going to be brilliant.
40:09I'm going to cut out a leaf from a sponge.
40:12I'm going to use some of Owen's toys to splodge oranges on the wall,
40:18and then probably at the end I'll go around
40:20and try and add a bit of light and things like that.
40:21I'm hoping I will just mix up different colours
40:25and it will all come to fruition.
40:31Orangeries date back to the 16th century
40:34and were used to protect citrus plants during the cold winter.
40:40Tim's tree, though, will be much easier to maintain.
40:46I'm not sure how big I want this to be.
40:49I don't want to go too sort of crazy with it,
40:53but then at the same time,
40:55I want it to have a bit of impact.
41:01Great artists kind of know within a couple of strokes
41:05whether it's going to be a masterpiece or not.
41:10And have a look from outside.
41:13Now he's happy with the gnarled trunk.
41:16Tim can start adding the more delicate details.
41:24Hmm.
41:26Kind of.
41:33While Tim expresses his creative side...
41:35..chris has more routine tasks on her mind.
41:42So while Tim is busy painting,
41:48I'm going to prepare this apartment
41:51because we've got booking, checking in tonight.
41:55So it's all done.
41:59We are really busy.
42:02Basically, from the 1st of July until end of September,
42:05we've got people here every day.
42:07So no stop, no holiday, no weekend, no day off,
42:12starting July 1st until end of September.
42:17Over in the orangery,
42:20Owen's sponge toys are proving just the ticket.
42:23I actually quite like the way it's left, like, the white...
42:29..as, er, as light.
42:33I might go round and just add a few bits here and there.
42:37I think this is pretty much it.
42:39I can't see me doing a lot more.
42:41But I'm going to call that...
42:44..a masterpiece.
42:46And with that, Tim's renovation is complete.
42:55Oh, wow, Tim. I love it.
42:57It's beautiful.
42:58It's an old orange tree, isn't it?
43:01It is, it is, it is.
43:02I think it's always been there.
43:07What was once a cold, grey dumping ground...
43:10..crammed with unwanted clutter...
43:15..has now been transformed into a huge, versatile space.
43:26The mezzanine has been opened up.
43:29Every surface, freshly painted.
43:34With new lights adding a touch of character.
43:39While handmade doors discreetly hide essential storage space.
43:44And the steel staircase now complements the clean lines of the decor.
43:52With the help of Owen's toys,
43:55Tim's orange tree is both a nod to the chateau's past
43:59as well as its future.
44:04It's very, very clean.
44:07Yeah, I think you could use it for anything.
44:09I think you could have receptions in here, functions in here.
44:13You could do art clubs in here.
44:16Wine tasting in here with all these barrels.
44:18Brilliant.
44:19Good job, very good.
44:22All done in time for the start of the summer season.
44:29It was a very unusable space.
44:31It looked a mess.
44:32But now we've got it back.
44:34So, yeah, very happy.
44:37The Orangery has already been booked out
44:41for one of the chateau's most important events.
44:45So, Tim and Chris won't be able to relax just yet.
44:50Next time...
44:56It's gone completely now.
44:58Everything grinds to a halt on a massive renovation project.
45:02Well, we've got five, six bar of pressure going in at one end
45:06and nothing coming out the other.
45:08Will and Richard come face to face
45:10with a very fruity-looking kitchen.
45:13You come in the kitchen?
45:15And it's rotten luck for this restoration.
45:22Tez!
45:23No, that's coming right down.
45:25You need to come up quick.
45:45No, that's coming right down.
45:46No, that's coming right down.
45:47No, that's coming right down.
45:48No, that's coming right down.
45:49No, that's coming right down.
45:50No, that's coming right down.
45:51No, that's coming right down.
45:52No, that's coming right down.
45:53No, that's coming right down.
45:54No, that's coming right down.
45:55No, that's coming right down.
45:56No, that's coming right down.
45:57No, that's coming right down.
45:58No, that's coming right down.
45:59No, that's coming right down.
46:00No, that's coming right down.
46:01No, that's coming right down.
46:02No, that's coming right down.
46:03No, that's coming right down.
46:04No, that's coming right down.
46:05No, that's coming right down.
46:06No, that's coming right down.
