00:01Across France, there are thousands of breathtaking chateaux.
00:06Many forgotten and abandoned.
00:09It is, at the moment, a major disaster zone.
00:13Now being bought by adventurous new owners.
00:17And the gates are open.
00:19Welcome to the chateau.
00:21They're taking on the challenge...
00:23OK, you can get me down.
00:25...to transform these historic buildings.
00:28Well, I'm definitely not qualified.
00:30I don't know how to do this.
00:31Into stunning homes.
00:34It was worth the effort.
00:36Superb.
00:37And unique businesses.
00:41There'll be successes.
00:43Oh, darling, I'm thrilled to bits.
00:45And setbacks.
00:47I've started scraping, and this is not going to be as easy as I hoped.
00:51But however hard the going gets...
00:54Where did we start this, Terry?
00:56The rewards can be great.
01:00Oh, it's delightful.
01:03As they get to live the dream...
01:05Glad you moved to France.
01:06Definitely.
01:07Cheers.
01:08Cheers, honey.
01:09As custodians of their very own castle.
01:13Today, this family butts heads.
01:19He's doubting my plan.
01:20He doesn't trust my plan.
01:21I think we need to readjust.
01:23On a tricky DIY job.
01:26Readjust means you go or I go.
01:28One Chatelaine fights to hold her nerve.
01:33I really hope I don't regret doing this because there's only so much paint that I have.
01:37I'm going to go for it.
01:38There's no turning back.
01:40And a massive renovation pushes this couple to the edge.
01:45What doesn't drive you insane makes you stronger, but right now I feel like I'm in a losing battle here.
01:52Overlooking the majestic Pyrenees in southwest France is the 14th century Chateau de Gers.
02:09Sitting in a five-acre estate with a pool, this five-bedroom former hunting lodge boasts thick medieval stone walls and its very own gargoyles.
02:29Queen of this castle is Connecticut-born marketing consultant Trish.
02:35This was the third Chateau I looked at and it was love at first sight.
02:39I was just like, this can't be real.
02:41This is exactly what I want.
02:42I was so excited.
02:43I literally started jumping up and down.
02:45I was that excited.
02:46I'm like, this is it.
02:47This is it.
02:47It's only the third one I've seen, but this is it.
02:54Located just 18 miles north of the Spanish border, Trish bought the Chateau in 2020 for £512,000 and threw herself into creating her dream home.
03:09I'm still very much a DIY rookie.
03:15Hopefully it'll work.
03:16I don't know if this is how the pros do it or not, but it's the best I can come up with at this point.
03:21My ambition is actually bigger than my skill set and knowledge, but I don't let that stop me.
03:28This year, she's leaving her corporate career to start a business hosting retreats.
03:34And when we last saw her, she trialed an afternoon art class.
03:40We've got a full house planned.
03:42We had planned on about 12 people coming.
03:45Bonjour.
03:47It's my first event as a business and I'm really excited about it.
03:51What we are approximately going to do, you can see this improvisation.
03:56So far, so good.
03:57I think it's off to a good start.
03:59Following the success of the event, Trish wants to get another Chateau bedroom ready for guests.
04:09And she's roped in friend and business partner, Beth, to help.
04:15So I think that this is, you know, pretty straightforward what we're going to be doing today.
04:19You always say that.
04:19I do, you're right.
04:21I mean it this time.
04:24As the Chateau sits in the stunning Ossou Valley, Trish wants the decor to pay homage to the local culture.
04:35Let me show you my inspiration for this room because, like, I wanted to have some kind of theme.
04:39I didn't want to just slap paint on the wall.
04:41This is the book that I found in the stash of stuff that was here.
04:44This is some lithographs of these paintings done in 1844, which I thought was kind of cool.
04:51They're called the Costume de la Valle d'Ossou.
04:55So it's all very regional and kind of capturing people and the dress of the times.
05:01That's so cool.
05:02A lot of it's based in Aubonne, which is the little ghost town that's about 15 minutes up the street.
05:07Oh, the one you told me about.
05:08Yeah.
05:09Some of these colors, I think that it can work.
05:12And I really like the terracotta.
05:14That's such a good idea.
05:17Before she gets creative with her book-inspired color scheme, Trish wants to add a panelling effect with wooden beading.
05:28I think there is an easier way to do this.
05:30I just don't know what it is.
05:37Once she's cut the wood to the correct angles, they fix the pieces into position.
05:44All right, let's see how it looks.
05:50Hey, that's looking pretty good.
05:52Yep.
05:53All right.
05:54So here's my terracotta color.
05:57Yeah, it looks nice, huh?
05:58It's a nice color, but it's really dark.
06:00And I just feel like if you put this on the whole of the wall, it's going to make it a darker room.
06:06So are you thinking we kind of do just the bottom in terracotta?
06:09What do you think?
06:11No, I think what you're saying makes sense.
06:13The change of plan means mixing a new color for the upper walls.
06:21I really hope I don't regret doing this because there's only so much paint that I have.
06:25Yes.
06:25I like that.
06:28Yeah?
06:29I'm going to go for it.
06:31There's no turning back.
06:32Yeah.
06:37Oh, yeah.
06:38That looks nice.
06:41Oh, yeah.
06:43That totally works.
06:45Changing the color has also put them behind, so there's a long night of decorating ahead.
07:01In the heart of the Languedoc region in southern France lies the magnificent 19th century Chateau du Puy-et-Prin.
07:10It sits in a seven-acre estate with 39 sumptuous rooms set around a central courtyard.
07:25It's now home to Tim, a photographer.
07:30Good morning.
07:31Fart back.
07:32And Sasha, a former fashion designer.
07:35Yes, that's my fingers.
07:37They run the Chateau as a destination wedding venue, along with daughter Lily and son-in-law Luke.
07:48It's been their home since 2003, when they bought it for £390,000.
07:55We just walked through the big gates and into the inner courtyard, which is a perfect square, and just fell in love with it.
08:06We've been here for 20 years now, in fact, coming up for 21 years, isn't it?
08:11Cheers.
08:12I've never cheers with you before.
08:14Having Luke and Lily take over the day-to-day running of the business has allowed us even more creative freedom to just indulge in different projects that we just love.
08:25We love to do.
08:2630 minutes from the Mediterranean coast, the Chateau is a short drive to the historic city of Béziers.
08:36The last time we saw Tim and Sasha...
08:43Have a look in there.
08:45Welcome to my new barrel.
08:46Look at that.
08:48How's he?
08:50They had repurposed one of their giant wine barrels into a unique wine store.
08:57This has been my bit of fun.
08:59And enlarged the converted wine press in their reception barn into a show-stopping bar.
09:10Now, with just a few months before the wedding season begins...
09:15Careful.
09:16They want to extend the Chateau's ancient stone steps as they play a starring role for every happy couple.
09:25Currently, the front steps have sunk slightly over the years.
09:29So, I've got to take the steps off, raise the concrete that they're sitting on, and then extend with Yorkstone out into the garden.
09:39This area here gets used on every single wedding.
09:44The group shots, the confetti, the actual wedding ceremony is here.
09:47So, to have this as a permanent step would be brilliant.
09:53Their first task is to try and loosen the original steps.
10:08How's it going?
10:10Just the person.
10:10I think that we should look at moving the top steps out of the way, and then we can see if we can pry up the lower steps and move them.
10:18No way.
10:30Look at that.
10:32You've done this before.
10:33Not this specifically.
10:35That is one bit of solid stone.
10:38Well done.
10:40You lifted that yourself.
10:41Now there's just both halves of the bottom step to uproot.
10:55These steps have been here ever since 1840.
10:59Ho, ho, ho, ho.
11:01Yay.
11:02There we go.
11:03Now it's just a case of getting it out.
11:04Well done.
11:05I'm just going to see if I can.
11:18The last hefty piece of stone is dislodged.
11:23There we go.
11:24It's a good start.
11:25That's my workout for the week done.
11:26Yes, yes.
11:27Yeah.
11:28Oh, wow, look at those.
11:29Solid stone.
11:31They are.
11:31You've done amazingly well getting them out.
11:35They've made a start, but there's a lot of heavy lifting ahead before this entrance is ready to wow their wedding guests.
11:47Coming up.
11:48One family are in decor deadlock.
11:52Nick, what do you think of this?
11:53Obviously these bits won't be here.
11:56What?
11:56Those are my favourite bits.
11:58And at Tim and Sasha's.
12:00That stone can go.
12:02Don't start, darling.
12:03There's trouble brewing.
12:05Three chefs in the kitchen doesn't work.
12:08All right.
12:08No offence.
12:15In the beautiful Dordogne region of southwest France stands the historic 14th century Chateau des Vieilles Vignes.
12:25This limestone former monastery has 35 rooms across three floors and several derelict outbuildings.
12:39Abandoned for over a decade, it was snapped up for 195,000 pounds by DIY novices Nick and Nicole, who now live here with son Noah.
12:55We're definitely on the way to creating our eventual dream home and business as well.
13:02I love all the skills we've learned and, you know, the fact that we keep learning every day.
13:07It has been fantastic.
13:08You're making something that's going to last, not just for our lifetime, but for many lifetimes, hopefully.
13:14Yeah, including noise.
13:16Yeah.
13:19Sitting two hours' drive inland from Bordeaux, the family currently live in a small apartment in the cellar,
13:27while they undertake the massive restoration of their new living space upstairs.
13:33When we last saw them, they were braving new skills in the kitchen.
13:45Well, I'm definitely not qualified to do this.
13:47There will definitely be a lot of style and error.
13:50All the while juggling family life with DIY.
13:54I don't really know what we were thinking when we were like, oh, yes, we can renovate a Chateau and have a baby at the same time.
14:03Now they're on a deadline, as they want to have two rooms ready to host Noah's first birthday party in just five days' time.
14:15Despite our optimism, I think there is still a lot to do, isn't there?
14:18We need to, uh, small matter of getting all the kitchen in.
14:24And the panelling in the dining room.
14:26Yeah.
14:27This is not going to be easy.
14:28When is it ever easy?
14:30This is going to be, yeah.
14:32Hair on fire, last minute, pulling together.
14:37With the party planned for the dining room, they're keen to make that space shine.
14:44Today we're going to try to get the panelling up, which is very exciting, and decide the design of it and get it on the wall.
14:51The wall underneath looks terrible, so just hiding that is going to make it look so much nicer and make the room look much more finished.
14:57They plan to create a panel effect using MDF and wooden edging strips.
15:06Over here.
15:08Yeah, just where it's a flat surface, because then we can visualise what it should look like.
15:13Nick's stepdad, John, is on hand to help.
15:17It's going to be, you know, that's the way you want it, because that's different from this one.
15:23Exactly.
15:24Right now, I've just put out, just so we get an idea.
15:27What I'm trying to visualise here is how good it's going to look in terms of how we put what, where.
15:33And then, if you put one on that side.
15:37Okay.
15:37And then, that one, there.
15:45Now I'm cooking.
15:46Yeah, well, Nick, what do you think of this?
15:49Like, do you like this as a, as a...
15:52Obviously, these bits won't be.
15:54Yeah.
15:55What? Those are my favourite bits?
15:58Yeah, it's pretty.
15:58With the pattern agreed, they can glue the panel into place on the frame.
16:07Oh, I'm not on the side.
16:12John needs to escape, otherwise you'll be forever glued to a panel.
16:20Then, the second panel follows suit.
16:23And Nicole marks on where the decorative strips will go.
16:30It makes us feel a lot closer to the finish line.
16:35We're getting there, slowly but surely.
16:41The dining room is one step closer to being party ready.
16:46And with a day of kitchen building planned for tomorrow,
16:49this busy family are full steam.
16:53Ahead.
17:00Back near the Mediterranean coast,
17:04Tim and Sasha's entrance transformation is underway.
17:09They've laid a new concrete base
17:11to extend the steps into a grander wedding stage
17:15and have sourced some reclaimed stone to lay on top.
17:19As soon as you start changing the character of a beautiful old building,
17:28you're messing around with history.
17:30We're using ancient stone from another chateau that was pulled down,
17:35trying to keep the whole essence of what the chateau is complete.
17:43The challenge now will be making the stones fit.
17:48This here is basically a big jigsaw puzzle.
17:51All stones are different shapes, different sizes.
17:53Tim's made a plan and numbered everything out,
17:56so I have a plan to follow.
17:57But it's one thing doing it on paper, it's another thing doing it in reality.
18:01All the measurements of the stones I've bought are written down here.
18:08I've transposed that onto this graph.
18:12It's all about trying to find the most efficient use of the stones.
18:17Some of these ancient slabs weigh up to seven stone.
18:24So handyman Laurent is here to help.
18:36Where's 5A?
18:375 itself is on the left.
18:395A is on the far right.
18:42Each of the 12 reclaimed stones is a different size.
18:484 goes...
18:49That's... yeah.
18:50What's that?
18:514?
18:52Yeah, that's 4.
18:53OK.
18:54So that goes around that way.
18:57That'll need trimming.
18:58Hello, hello.
18:59Hello, gorgeous.
19:00They're 11 and 12 and I haven't trimmed them.
19:02Right, do you want to...
19:05Do you not want them on the edges because they've got the rounded corners?
19:07No.
19:07Believe me, I spent hours trying to fit them.
19:10What do you think, Luke?
19:12Yeah, once...
19:13I'm happy.
19:13I can't wait to see when it's all...
19:14He's doubting my plan.
19:15He doesn't trust my plan.
19:16I think we need to readjust, but we'll see in a minute.
19:19We'll see in a minute.
19:21Readjust means you go where I go.
19:27With the stones laid out,
19:29the hard job of trimming and fitting them gets underway.
19:37Cutting all these stones into this is just going to take me absolutely forever.
19:40Well, I'm not enjoying it.
19:43Not pleasant.
19:45Well, there's no option, is there, really?
19:47No.
19:47Those are the trickiest bits.
19:48That stone can go...
19:49Don't start, darling.
19:51There's no extra.
19:51I submit hours on the computer, don't, because...
19:54Yeah, it's just we're going to have...
19:55We're just going to have this overhang here on both sides, the rounded edge.
20:00Well, maybe we can think of a way of...
20:03We can chop that flat afterwards.
20:04Sweetie, three chefs in the kitchen doesn't work.
20:07All right, well, I'm...
20:08No offence.
20:09I'm just trying to support Luke, that's all.
20:10Yeah, well, that's why I'm here.
20:13If you want me to be here and cut, I'll do that, no problem.
20:16But then I'll just be watching you.
20:17Unless you want to take over the whole project.
20:19No, thank you.
20:21You're doing fine.
20:22Don't worry.
20:23Stop worrying.
20:23He said.
20:26He said.
20:31I don't like this job.
20:34There's no turning back and a long way to go
20:37before the chateau has the grand entrance it deserves.
20:47200 miles away, near the Spanish border, at Chateau de Gers,
20:53Trish and Beth have finished painting the guest room,
20:58ready for Trish's new retreat business.
21:01The fact that we created our own colour and it worked,
21:05I feel really good about that.
21:06I like it so much better than just the plain white walls.
21:10You know, it's a beautiful day.
21:11We should go up to Oban and give a little inspiration.
21:14We deserve a break.
21:15Oh, yeah, come on, let's do it.
21:16All right, let's go.
21:17The room's colours were inspired by 19th-century illustrations
21:24drawn in the nearby spa town of Auburn.
21:30It's somewhere Trish plans to bring her guests
21:33with a spectacular stop-off en route.
21:40All right.
21:41Oh, look at this.
21:42This is it.
21:43Yeah.
21:43Isn't this beautiful?
21:47Oh, my God, is that Oban down there?
21:49Yeah.
21:50This is the entire Valet d'Oceau that's kind of going in this direction
21:54and then the Pyrenees are behind us
21:55and Spain is just over there.
21:58That's fantastic.
21:59You can see all the way to the end of the valley there.
22:01Yeah.
22:02I just absolutely love it.
22:04I mean, look at that view
22:04and especially on a day like today,
22:06it's just absolutely gorgeous.
22:08It's fantastic.
22:08It's fantastic.
22:09What do you think?
22:15Should we go take a look?
22:16Yeah, definitely.
22:17All right, let's go.
22:20From the early 18th century to the 1930s,
22:24it was highly fashionable to visit a spa town
22:28and large resorts like Auburn
22:31developed around natural springs.
22:35So this is the thermal spa.
22:36Wow, it's huge.
22:38Yeah, apparently the artist that did the lithographs
22:41that are in that book,
22:42he came here for an actual treatment
22:44and I think that's how he discovered Oban,
22:47cut down through here to get to the main square.
22:49That's the town hall here.
22:50Yeah.
22:51But taking the waters fell out of fashion in the 1930s
22:55and today, Auburn is a shadow of its former self.
23:01I'm excited to bring people here when we do our retreats.
23:05Oh, man.
23:05I think this could be a nice addition to the programme.
23:09I kind of want to tell people about it because I love it
23:12and I think other people will too
23:13and maybe that'll help bring it back to life.
23:15The visit has sparked Trish's imagination.
23:24And back at the chateau,
23:26she's got a plan to use some of the historic artwork
23:29featuring Auburn in her new guest room.
23:33These frames are for the copies of the drawings
23:38that I made from the sketchbook
23:40because I don't want to frame the originals.
23:43And in the spirit of reuse, repurpose and resold,
23:49I actually bought these from a woman that was moving
23:52and they're in great shape.
23:55To match the antique prints,
23:58Trish wants to give the second-hand frames an aged effect.
24:04Because they're kind of lacquered,
24:06we're going to just sand it down a little bit
24:07and then put a bottom coat of the lighter colour
24:12that we put on the walls up there
24:13and then just sand it a little bit
24:16to let some of that yellow come through
24:17so it's kind of a little bit of a weathered look.
24:20With the upcycled frames underway
24:23and big plans for the book itself,
24:27Trish is putting a unique stamp on her newest guest room.
24:33Coming up, Luke faces a gruelling task.
24:40This has been the most exhausting physical day
24:43I've done in such a long time.
24:46My body did not enjoy that.
24:49While Nicole is feeling boxed in.
24:53I never want to see a complete box again in my life.
24:57I shall refuse them.
24:58They are no longer welcome.
25:06In southern France,
25:08at Chateau du Puy-et-Prin,
25:10Luke has spent a gruelling four hours
25:15cutting and laying reclaimed stone
25:17for their new entrance.
25:19I'm pre-filling some of this up with just sand
25:24just to give it a base to work from.
25:28So I'm just going to flatten this out
25:29and then I'll put the cement over the top.
25:33It's an important spot
25:35where many of their wedding couples choose to marry.
25:39Before the end of the day,
25:40I just need to make sure I go back along,
25:42clean up all the stones
25:44so there's no cement all over them.
25:47Everyone is so happy
25:52that we're finally bringing this stair
25:54to how it should have been done in the first place.
25:57This has come a long way in the last few hours.
26:00I'm very happy.
26:01Very, very happy.
26:04Well, perfection.
26:05Perfection.
26:06Oh!
26:08Luke is nearing the end of this mammoth task.
26:13Oh, boy.
26:15What have you been up to?
26:16And Tim is pleased
26:18his computerised layout
26:20helped pave the way.
26:23Well done.
26:24So my plan did work eventually.
26:27Brilliant.
26:28What you've done is brilliant.
26:30What a brilliant job.
26:32Well, it sort of looks like
26:33it's been there forever.
26:35I couldn't have done better myself, you know.
26:38Funny.
26:40It pays to delegate.
26:41It's a big thumbs up from Tim and Sasha
26:47and a new skill for Luke.
26:51This is the first time I've worked for stone.
26:53So it's a first for me.
26:54And I've loved it and hated it at the same time.
26:57This has been the most exhausting
27:05physical day I've done
27:07in such a long time.
27:10My body did not enjoy that.
27:16Everything I envisaged,
27:17you've created.
27:18Good.
27:19That's good.
27:19I'm good.
27:20Had a bit of a wobbly this morning.
27:21I didn't think I was going to achieve it,
27:23but we got there in the end.
27:25I can cope with your wobblies.
27:26That's fine.
27:28Your wobblies are worthwhile.
27:32The back-breaking part of the job
27:34might be over for Luke,
27:36but the steps still need edging with stone
27:39before this entrance is wedding ready.
27:49Back near Bergerac,
27:51with just a few days
27:52until family arrive
27:54for Noah's birthday party,
27:56work at Nick and Nicole's
27:58is in full swing.
28:01Nick and I are hoping to get
28:02some real momentum going
28:05with the kitchen bill today.
28:08First, though,
28:09they need to create
28:10a makeshift playpen for Noah.
28:14Do you want to try your play?
28:15Yeah?
28:17Yeah, let's go.
28:18Let's see.
28:19Look at this.
28:21Could you just plug in the light
28:22next to this little bit?
28:23How hard does DOI have to get?
28:27The DOI itself
28:29is obviously all-consuming,
28:31and we've got to worry about
28:32all it will know
28:33is health and safety
28:34in the mix of it.
28:36Look at that.
28:37All your friends there.
28:39That's nice.
28:40You just have to
28:41try to find solutions
28:42to make it work,
28:44to get some sort of
28:45forward momentum.
28:46It's not easy.
28:48These busy parents
28:50are spinning
28:50a lot of plates.
28:53Hello,
28:53and they're
28:57feeling the pressure.
29:00That's starting to go low,
29:01not high.
29:02It's brilliant.
29:03It's really working out
29:03in my favour.
29:05It's one of those days
29:06where I think we've had
29:06very little sleep,
29:07up and then.
29:08Yeah,
29:09just, uh,
29:10just tired.
29:11It's been,
29:12been some long days as well.
29:16I think we have
29:17such high expectations
29:18of what we want to achieve
29:19this week.
29:21Both Nick and I
29:22are very, kind of,
29:23conscious that
29:24my dad's coming here
29:25for the first time,
29:25and we'd really like him
29:27to see it from
29:27its best.
29:29OK,
29:3120th time lucky.
29:32Just one moment
29:33it fits
29:33and then I can
29:33sort the rest out.
29:34Yeah.
29:36And we both
29:38just feel like
29:38we're failing miserably
29:39because we're not
29:40getting enough done.
29:41It's refusing
29:42to play ball.
29:43And we're putting
29:44a lot of pressure
29:45on ourselves
29:46to make things
29:48as nice as can be,
29:50but we just have to realise
29:51that it will be
29:52what it will be.
29:54And you took about
29:54half an hour,
29:56a job that should have
29:56taken five minutes,
29:57but anyway,
29:58never mind.
29:58Assembling the kitchen
30:01is testing
30:02their willpower.
30:04Something is
30:05incredibly wrong here.
30:06Have I put this
30:06drawer upside down?
30:08That's a good one.
30:10I loathe
30:11and I love
30:12these things.
30:13And navigating
30:14300 different
30:16boxes of cabinets
30:17is pushing them
30:19to the edge.
30:21Shouldn't be that hard,
30:22right?
30:23One box.
30:23One box is all I need.
30:25But it's definitely
30:26not any of these.
30:28What doesn't drive you
30:30insane makes you stronger,
30:31but right now I
30:32feel like I'm
30:34in a losing battle here.
30:37The kitchen build
30:38is getting the better
30:39of me.
30:40So,
30:43one point kitchen,
30:44they'll point me.
30:45I never want to see
30:49a comfort box again
30:51in my life.
30:53I shall refuse them.
30:55They are no longer
30:56welcome.
30:59But it means to an end,
31:00right?
31:00OK, well, that's promising.
31:05This pair aren't going
31:07to be beaten
31:07by a flat-packed kitchen,
31:09though.
31:10One, two, three.
31:16Watch your fingers.
31:18Just need to straighten up
31:19a little bit.
31:19It's going a little bit
31:20wonky.
31:21That's good.
31:23It really is starting
31:24to come together,
31:24isn't it?
31:25Yeah, no, it is.
31:26I love the light in here.
31:27I love the space.
31:29It's going to be beautiful
31:29looking out in the garden
31:31whilst cooking.
31:35It's been a difficult day,
31:37but with party guests
31:38arriving in just 48 hours,
31:41they're on the final push
31:43to the finish line.
31:53In the spectacular Pyrenees,
31:56Trish and Beth are making
31:58some unique artwork
31:59for the guest room
32:01using the book
32:02of local drawings
32:03which inspired the decor.
32:06I just think it's really cool
32:08and I really like the colours
32:09that are coming through.
32:10As well as upcycling frames
32:12for copies of the prints,
32:14Trish wants to make
32:15something special
32:16for the book itself.
32:19I have the sketchbook
32:21that I'd like to display
32:22on the wall
32:23in the shadow box.
32:25I've never done
32:26one of these before,
32:27but how hard could it be?
32:28It seems pretty straightforward.
32:31To create her shadow box
32:34or display case,
32:36Trish wants to recycle
32:37another old frame
32:39and starts by removing
32:41the backing.
32:42I'm just going to cut
32:44the paper around this
32:45and hopefully it'll peel up.
32:50There we go.
32:52Then she screws batons
32:54around the edge of the frame
32:56to add some depth.
33:01Once all the frames
33:02are painted
33:02and carefully sanded back
33:05for a rustic effect,
33:07they can start
33:10to fit the prints.
33:13How's that look?
33:14Yeah.
33:14That looks really good
33:15in the frame, doesn't it?
33:16Mm-hmm.
33:17And the colours
33:17kind of look like
33:18it matches the jacket,
33:19doesn't it?
33:20Yeah.
33:21Then,
33:22Trish fits the book itself
33:24into her handmade box frame.
33:26I think I can make this work.
33:28All right.
33:31Yay!
33:32What do you think?
33:33Super.
33:34Yeah.
33:35I think we're in good shape.
33:36Let's get these up on the wall
33:37and bring the furniture in.
33:39Do you like that one?
33:45I do.
33:48That's probably perfect.
33:49Okay.
33:50That works.
34:01I think that's kind of cool.
34:02I like the way it looks.
34:09Two days ago,
34:13the guest room was plain
34:15and uninviting.
34:22Now it's a warm
34:24and welcoming space.
34:26The plain white walls
34:27are painted in earthy tones,
34:30inspired by the book
34:32of antique drawings.
34:35With wooden trim,
34:37adding a character
34:38beautiful paneled effect.
34:41Copies of the 19th century
34:43illustrations
34:43are displayed
34:45in upcycled,
34:46hand-distressed frames.
34:49And the original book
34:51takes center stage
34:53in its very own showcase.
34:56Dun-da-da-dun-dun-dun-dun-dun.
34:58I love the paint combination.
35:00That works really well.
35:02I love the story
35:03of the paintings
35:04and that was such a great idea.
35:06I'm in this area
35:07that's got its own
35:08unique traditions
35:09and that sort of thing.
35:10And I think it's something
35:11to be shared with people.
35:13This room
35:13is so much more inviting
35:15than it was before
35:16for welcoming guests
35:17here for a retreat.
35:19Cheers!
35:19Cheers!
35:20Trish now has a beautiful room
35:26ready to wow her guests
35:28and her grand plan
35:30to open the chateau
35:31for business
35:32is one step closer.
35:35This is called scumbling.
35:48I love doing this stuff.
35:52And with party guests arriving,
35:56Nicole is feeling the pressure.
35:58It's not finished.
35:59We don't have any furniture.
36:00In the Dordogne,
36:09at Chateau des Vieilles Vignes,
36:11the sun is shining
36:13and it's party time.
36:16Well, today feels just
36:17very, very special.
36:19We've come so far
36:21and really marking Noah's birthday
36:23is a great way
36:24to just also reflect
36:25on everything we've managed
36:26to achieve in a year.
36:27So, yeah, no,
36:28it's a very nice
36:29and very special day.
36:31Nicole and Nick
36:32have been working non-stop
36:34juggling parenthood
36:36alongside DIY.
36:38Their dream kitchen
36:39isn't quite finished,
36:41but today they can stop
36:43and celebrate
36:45this important occasion
36:47in their new family dining room.
36:50Once dated and neglected
36:54with dark, dingy decor,
36:57it's now the bright, airy heart
37:01of their new home.
37:04Exposed stone
37:05and traditional panelling
37:08add warmth and character,
37:11blending perfectly
37:12with the travertine floor.
37:16The painstakingly tiled fireplace
37:18and Narnia wardrobe-style door
37:21are unique focal points
37:23in the room,
37:24which is now about
37:26to host this special party.
37:29We're really pleased
37:30with how it's come out.
37:32Still some to do.
37:34It's not finished.
37:35We don't have any furniture,
37:37but everything is looking so nice.
37:40Could not be happier.
37:41I mean, there's no doubt
37:42it's been a hard slog
37:43to get to here to this point,
37:45but I think, you know,
37:46today is about Noah.
37:47It's about celebrating
37:48how far we've come
37:49and, yeah, just relaxing
37:53and enjoying ourselves
37:54and, you know,
37:54mingling with family and friends.
37:57Oh, wow.
37:58It does look amazing, doesn't it?
37:59We need to hook one in there,
38:01don't we?
38:01A small one.
38:03Nicole's sister, Josephine,
38:05arrived from Sweden yesterday.
38:09I think this room
38:10is looking really beautiful.
38:11I love the colours.
38:14I love the light in here
38:15and they've, yeah,
38:16I think they've made
38:17absolute most of it,
38:18so it's fantastic.
38:20Oh, you've got the colour.
38:21The cane.
38:22You look beautiful, darling.
38:25There's just time
38:26for a few final flourishes.
38:30OK, let me know how and where.
38:32That's perfect.
38:33Yeah.
38:33Yeah, that's great.
38:34Very good.
38:40There we are.
38:41OK.
38:42While the birthday boy
38:43finishes a nap,
38:45the guests can get
38:46the party started.
38:49Everybody come through
38:50now if you'd like
38:51and have a glass of champagne,
38:52so please come in.
38:56OK, and pop this.
38:59Well, let the party begin,
39:01everyone.
39:02For Nicole's dad, Elom,
39:07this is his first visit
39:09to the chateau.
39:10So we haven't seen it
39:12on pictures and on video.
39:15And when I turned the corner
39:17coming in here,
39:19I had a shock
39:20because of the size of it.
39:22But they've done a lot
39:23of nice things here
39:24and I'm impressed.
39:27Stop it.
39:28Wow.
39:29Something.
39:29Now the VIP himself
39:33can make an entrance.
39:35Bonjour.
39:37Hello.
39:37Hello.
39:40Birthday to you.
39:43Happy birthday to Noah.
39:48Happy birthday to you.
39:51Oh, wow.
39:55It's super sweet.
39:57This is exactly why
39:58we've created the space for him.
40:01Beep, beep.
40:02He's just so keen
40:03to crawl around,
40:03run around.
40:05And this is going to be perfect.
40:08Off he goes.
40:10That's adorable.
40:10It's been an enormous amount
40:15of work to get to this stage.
40:18But days like today
40:20are a reminder
40:21of what Nick and Nicole
40:23are working towards.
40:26Right now,
40:26feeling very good,
40:28very happy
40:28and sun shining.
40:30People seem to be
40:31having a good time,
40:32which is the most important thing.
40:33And Noah is happy.
40:35Yeah.
40:36Couldn't be better.
40:36Yeah.
40:37Yeah.
40:37Yeah.
40:37Yeah.
40:37Yeah.
40:37Yeah.
40:37Yeah.
40:37Yeah.
40:37Yeah.
40:37Yeah.
40:37Yeah.
40:37Yeah.
40:37Yeah.
40:37Yeah.
40:37Yeah.
40:38Yeah.
40:38Yeah.
40:38Yeah.
40:39Yeah.
40:39Yeah.
40:39Yeah.
40:40Yeah.
40:44Near Bézier in southern France,
40:47Tim is trying to put
40:49the finishing touches
40:50to their new entrance steps.
40:54But he's bought
40:55the wrong shade of stone
40:57to complete the job.
41:00These are one of
41:01eight pieces of stone
41:03that I've bought
41:03to put on the side
41:06of the new steps.
41:07They are slightly darker
41:09and greyer shade.
41:10So Sasha's said she put a coating
41:13of paint and varnish
41:15to actually match the colour
41:17of the stones we've put down.
41:22I'm going to try and mix
41:25some of the original stone dust
41:27with acrylics
41:29and colour
41:31and colour them down.
41:34For former fashion designer
41:36Sasha, it's a chance
41:38to get creative.
41:41Hmm.
41:42Not bad.
41:44This is called scumbling
41:46as opposed to stippling.
41:49Oh, I love doing this stuff.
41:51Right, and now I'm going to put on
41:57a coat of varnish.
42:02Dust, dust, dust, dust, dust.
42:04Be careful.
42:04dust.
42:05Okay.
42:06The dust gets absorbed
42:08into the varnish
42:09and then becomes
42:11a matte surface.
42:15Sasha is a natural artist.
42:17She does things
42:18from her imagination.
42:19She expresses herself
42:21through her art.
42:22I tend to be more
42:23practical in terms of
42:24there has to be
42:25an end to the process.
42:27I'm trying to achieve
42:29an objective.
42:30But it's also
42:31going to look good.
42:37Once Sasha's stones
42:38are ready,
42:39it's over to Tim
42:41to fit them.
42:47That all looks all right.
42:50Once it's all
42:51weathered in,
42:52I've done the rendering,
42:53it'll all look
42:54as I want it.
42:56It doesn't seem
42:57a lot,
42:58maybe,
42:59to some people,
42:59but bringing
43:00this whole step out,
43:02it's transformed
43:03this space.
43:05Then it's time
43:07for Sasha
43:07to add some
43:08final flair.
43:11Okay.
43:15There.
43:17Can we get
43:17the two bags
43:18of stones?
43:21I think that way
43:22around would look
43:23better.
43:24I totally disagree.
43:26It could go
43:26like that.
43:27Ah.
43:28That's perfect.
43:29over four weeks
43:33ago,
43:34their entrance steps
43:35were unimpressive
43:37and sinking
43:38into the grass.
43:45Now,
43:46using slabs
43:47of locally
43:48reclaimed stone,
43:50painstakingly shaped
43:51and laid
43:52by Luke,
43:53the steps
43:53have been raised up
43:54and extended
43:56to form a perfect
43:57wedding stage,
43:59with Sasha's hand-painted
44:02stones framing
44:03the edges
44:04and planting
44:05to match
44:06their Mediterranean
44:07garden.
44:10It's rather good,
44:10isn't it?
44:11I love the size of it.
44:13No,
44:13I wouldn't want to do
44:13this again.
44:14This was a little bit
44:16like hard work.
44:18But tomorrow's
44:18another day.
44:20We can hot skip
44:21and jump
44:21to our next project.
44:23Cheers, my darling.
44:23Cheers, sweetie.
44:27Mmm.
44:30Finally,
44:31this 19th century
44:33chateau
44:33has a grand
44:35entrance to match.
44:36And once
44:37Mother Nature
44:38lends a hand
44:39to surround
44:39the steps
44:40with lush
44:40green grass,
44:42the picture-perfect
44:43wedding spot
44:44will be complete.
44:55Next time...
44:56I like working
44:57with you,
44:58but I can hear
44:59now that that's
44:59not reciprocated,
45:00so...
45:00Whoa!
45:01One chateau
45:03faces his worst
45:04nightmare.
45:04Okay,
45:06you can get me
45:07down now.
45:08And two new
45:09owners get the
45:10keys to their
45:11dream home.
