02:30We knew we were going to come in last, but I didn't think the gap was going to be as big as it is.
02:34Yin and Gaz will start the third leg almost two whole days behind the race leaders and a challenging 26 hours behind their closest rivals, Caroline and Tom.
02:45Opening the book and seeing, like, everyone's names in front of you was really quite demoralising.
02:53Our hearts just set with, oh, yeah, we are bad at this.
02:56Yeah, we are bad at this.
02:57We've got each other, it's all right.
03:00Nobody thought we'd get to second place, did they, on this leg?
03:15We'll plod along, we'll keep doing what we're doing.
03:18Hiya, mate.
03:19Brothers Brian and Melvin are the second team to check out.
03:23Thank you very much.
03:24Go on.
03:26Your third checkpoint is Shangri-La.
03:30Lying on the edge of the Tibetan Plateau, over 10,000 feet above sea level, in the heart of the Hongduan mountain range.
03:48The third checkpoint, Shangri-La.
03:54For centuries, this frontier city was known as Jong-dien, but in 2001 it was renamed after the fictional paradise and a government bid to drive tourism.
04:06The team that arrives in fifth place will be eliminated from the rest.
04:11That's what I didn't want to see.
04:14Right, let's get off this dirt island.
04:18This is the leg I was dreading from the start.
04:21Yeah, we're all excited.
04:22The kick out.
04:23Nervous.
04:24It's important just to keep doing what we've been doing, but quicker.
04:28Yeah.
04:29To reach the third checkpoint, teams must journey through southwest China, climbing from the tropical coastline towards the foothills of the mighty Himalayas.
04:40They could head north through the untamed beauty of the Guizhou province and its newly built eco-cities.
04:47Because it's an elimination leg, we've got to be direct, haven't we?
04:50We both agree that.
04:51The direct route is west.
04:54Or teams could veer west into Yunnan province, utilising the region's best connected transport hubs, but forced to travel alongside the millions of tourists who visit each year.
05:06So we do the overnighter, then you go and bang out the homestay.
05:10It's got to be that overnight travel, paid off on the second leg, so we're hoping it does a similar thing this time.
05:17Stuff the cost.
05:18We've got to be direct.
05:19It'll be nice to go outside now.
05:26It's quite warm, isn't it?
05:27Yeah, yeah.
05:28Oh, wow.
05:29Look at the sea.
05:32Oh!
05:32I'm going to get my sunglasses up.
05:35I do like being by water.
05:37After travelling the length of Hainan Island yesterday, Elizabeth and Letitia have caught an early ferry, sailing back across the Cheongzhou Strait to the mainland.
05:48I'm feeling so good today, but it is daunting to see elimination.
05:56People can catch up and they're not too far behind us.
06:00But we want to make the most of our time in China.
06:02I feel like we need to stick with the same strategy.
06:05Homestay accommodation and continue to make memories together.
06:11We're approaching.
06:12I see a port there.
06:14As soon as you get off, we'll get on a bus.
06:16Once on the mainland, the sisters plan to forge a scenic route north, away from the tourist trail.
06:24Would you like one of these?
06:26Yes, please.
06:27Having left the checkpoint five and a half hours behind...
06:31Er, cardboard.
06:32It's like a hard powder.
06:34These were expired.
06:35March 2024.
06:37That's literally the day after you turned 18.
06:41Finn and Sean Ed are en route to Heiko Port.
06:44If we head north, there's meant to be wildlife and nature, and we can also use the big transport hubs again.
06:51It's achievable.
06:53It is achievable if things go our way.
06:56Like, I really, really, really don't want to get eliminated.
06:58Yeah.
06:59We're definitely not city people.
07:03So, the amount of stress it was putting on us on the last leg, it was either me pushing his buttons or he was pushing mine.
07:10There is a crossing there thing.
07:12See you again.
07:12It's go that way.
07:12Oh.
07:13Crossing there.
07:13I think this leg was more of a priority to kind of keep that calmness.
07:19I feel like I'll always be in charge, to be honest, but communication is key.
07:24I do feel pressure to get off this island really quickly because we just need to gain some distance.
07:31It's beautiful.
07:32It's boiling now.
07:33Do you think we'll get some kip on it?
07:37We might be able to, yeah.
07:38We'll get a leg room anyway.
07:39I'm not going to take my shoes off.
07:40Yeah, I'm going to take mine off when we get to the ferry.
07:43With elimination looming, Brian and Melvin are gaining crucial momentum aboard overnight transport.
07:49We've got to keep on going west now.
07:52Yeah.
07:52Their 11-hour journey will see them board and delight the ferry by bus, which then continues west, propelling them to the major transport hub of Nanning.
08:03But the good thing is it's a non-stop journey.
08:06This is all in one package, isn't it?
08:08This is one go, isn't it?
08:10I've always been a very competitive person.
08:12Not always won, not always succeeded, but always been extremely competitive.
08:19And I know Brian is as well.
08:20If we're going to do this, then we give it 100%.
08:23So I think we're going to end up going further than anybody else today.
08:27Obviously, we'll soon see.
08:29As the brothers try to get ahead of the other teams...
08:33Time will tell.
08:35Hello.
08:36Hello.
08:37To check out, please.
08:39Leaving the checkpoint in fourth place...
08:42The team that arrives in fifth place will be eliminated from the race.
08:46Mother and son, Caroline and Tom.
08:49Wow.
08:50Oh, my God.
08:51That's going to add so much pressure.
08:5419 hours after race leaders, Elizabeth and Leticia.
08:58Do you know where Shangri-La is?
09:02Here.
09:03That's Shangri-La, is it?
09:04OK.
09:04Right.
09:05Good start.
09:06I was feeling gutted when I realised there was going to be an elimination.
09:10However, it won't stop me fighting like mad and going the fastest we possibly can.
09:15I would imagine off overnight for the longest journey we can.
09:19OK.
09:20I feel nervous.
09:21I feel nervous.
09:22I thought we were getting eliminated is scary.
09:23Like, really scary.
09:24When the chips are down, that's when I come into my element.
09:28I'm feeling a little more ballsy, I think is how you would say it.
09:32OK.
09:34Tickets.
09:35Yeah.
09:36Time is of the essence.
09:39So, our plan is to go north-west towards Nanning.
09:44We think that's the quickest.
09:45Perfect timing.
09:46Oh, here's the train.
09:49Like Brian and Melvin, they hope to take a direct overnight bus to Nanning to gain ground
09:55in the three teams in front of them.
09:57Hey, look.
09:58We're trying to go to Nanning.
09:59Tonight?
10:00Oh.
10:01Tomorrow.
10:02Tomorrow?
10:03Yes.
10:04Give up.
10:05No, we can't give up.
10:06Thomas, no.
10:07Any...
10:08Any...
10:09Any...
10:10No.
10:11No.
10:12No, we can't give up.
10:13Thomas, no.
10:14Any...
10:15Any bus at all?
10:16No.
10:17Nothing.
10:18No bus.
10:19She's beautiful.
10:22I think I'll rely on mum just to cheer me up, because mum's really good at that.
10:29She just has a way of making me feel like everything's OK.
10:33Oh.
10:34You'll be there soon.
10:36OK?
10:37Because mums somehow just know everything, which is really annoying, but they just do.
10:43The last bus for Nanning was five o'clock.
10:45We must be able to get the ferry.
10:47It means we'd get off the island tonight.
10:50Would you consider that?
10:51Shall we pursue it?
10:52I feel more comfortable with Thomas beside me, I suppose, because my role is as his mother.
10:59We did so well trying, Thomas.
11:00Yeah.
11:01Come on.
11:02I just can't deal with the thought of going home.
11:04I know, I know.
11:05I'm gutted too.
11:06Inertia will never lead to progress.
11:09OK?
11:10I don't want to come across as weak in front of him.
11:13I always want to come across as confident, and I know what I'm doing, and he can trust
11:18me.
11:19But that's not really true when I'm on my own.
11:23If you get eliminated, mum, that would be the toughest mood to swallow probably in my life.
11:27All we have to do is stay in, OK?
11:30We'll just get through it together.
11:32Yeah?
11:33I think because your role as a mother and protector takes over from your actual inner fears and
11:40you overcome them, you don't think about things that would normally affect you.
11:44I just want to stay.
11:45I know, I know.
11:46So we just try our best anyway.
11:53I know we're waiting three hours.
11:54That's so long.
11:55This is a bit of a setback, so it's annoying that things are not going to plan.
12:00Waiting for their connection to the city of Leo Jo, Elizabeth and Letitia.
12:06Because we had a lead as well.
12:08Yeah.
12:09Oh, it's the right place.
12:11Oh, it's the right place.
12:13Also hoping to head north.
12:16There has to be a train tonight, surely.
12:18Hopefully.
12:21Oh, my God, Schneid.
12:22Schneid!
12:23Schneid!
12:25Ah!
12:26No way!
12:28Is that them?
12:29No.
12:30We have caught up.
12:32Yes!
12:34I was expecting to see someone.
12:37You kept on speaking it to the universe.
12:39Look.
12:40You speak it out, it happens.
12:42Oh, we have done well.
12:43We have done well.
12:44We have done well.
12:45We have done well.
12:46They're fuming.
12:47They're fuming.
12:48We have done so well.
12:49They are fuming.
12:50Oh, we have done well.
12:51Oh!
12:52I feel like they're getting on this one.
12:53They're getting on this one, for sure.
12:55They, what?
12:56Six hours ahead of us?
12:57Yeah, we've made up six hours ahead of us.
12:59Oh, this is amazing.
13:01Oh, look at the aerodynamic on that.
13:04Okay.
13:05Is this 15?
13:06Oh, my gosh.
13:07Finn and Sean Ed are in carriage 15.
13:09They're literally up there.
13:10I can see them.
13:11It's the first of us, really, to have a competition.
13:13Yeah, of course, when you're in the lead, if you're seeing anybody, it's not a good sign.
13:18Because now we're not leading.
13:19I don't want to feel stressed.
13:20I'm worried about you.
13:21You're not going to enjoy it as much.
13:22It's like...
13:23This just makes me go into race mode.
13:24Oh, great.
13:48It could be worse places, couldn't it?
13:58Well, we have.
13:59That's the problem.
14:00Well, I think we've got a chance of winning it, if we're still in it tonight.
14:03Yeah, well, yeah.
14:05Everybody's got a chance of winning it.
14:09That worked, didn't it?
14:10I'm sorry.
14:11I just can't.
14:13Having capitalised on overnight travel,
14:16Brian and Melvin have made the hop from Transport Hub Nanning to Pooja Hay,
14:21home to the indigenous Yi people.
14:24I would say, when you see pictures of China, this is the kind of new...
14:28What a place, eh?
14:30The only high-rise is the hills.
14:33Beautiful hills.
14:36In return for free accommodation,
14:38they're assisting in the removal of dead lotus plants from the lake.
14:42See? Technique, mate.
14:46Yeah, well, this is easier.
14:48Piece of piss.
14:49Flick it up.
14:50Oh, I missed that.
14:52Yeah, it works every time, your method, doesn't it?
14:54The difference of East China to now we're in Western China
14:59is quieter, pretty, peaceful.
15:03You can hear the birds singing.
15:05And the sun is just trying to pop out.
15:12A bit nutty?
15:13Cucumber.
15:14No, not cucumber.
15:15And I don't like cucumber.
15:16I don't like cucumber.
15:17Do you not like cucumber, do you?
15:18No, I don't like cucumber.
15:20Our relationship was always fun when we were young,
15:22but we went off in two totally different trajectories
15:25and things just grew apart.
15:28Now, our relationship is distant
15:30and the friendship that we had, we lost over the years.
15:35Don't do that!
15:39You can't just turn around in the middle of a boat and half stand up.
15:44Lotuses provide breeding grounds for wildlife to flourish
15:48and throws light upon the meaning of the name Pooja Hay,
15:51lake full of fish and shrimp.
15:54When was the last time we went fishing?
15:56Oh, no, I can't remember that.
15:59I remember many times on a Sunday morning,
16:01that was, what, two miles walk?
16:04Oh, it was more than that.
16:05That's what we used to do, set the alarm, wasn't it?
16:07Four o'clock and then get up there for about six.
16:11I think our mother wanted us to go to Sunday school.
16:14Yeah.
16:15And we didn't like it.
16:16They wanted us out of the house on a Sunday.
16:18Well, I think so.
16:19When you think back on it now.
16:21Mum was quite hard work.
16:25We weren't a particularly loving family.
16:27So, how old were you when you went to boarding school?
16:30Well, that's what I'm trying to remember.
16:31It'd be ten or eleven, I should think.
16:33We don't know to this day really why I was sent off to school.
16:38Melvin went to secondary school and then joined the army.
16:44I didn't feel as though, oh, I'm special, I'm privileged.
16:48It was probably the opposite.
16:50It was, why am I being sent away?
16:56I'll tell you what I couldn't understand,
16:57and I still can't get my head around to it to this day.
17:00I was never told that you were going to go to private school
17:04or boarding school.
17:05Really?
17:06Yeah, you just went.
17:10It wasn't, oh, your brother's going there and this is that
17:13and that's happening.
17:15It just happened.
17:17The way it made me feel was,
17:19well, they must be looking at the way I'm turning out
17:21and they don't want Brian to turn out the way I'm looking,
17:23so we're going to send him over there.
17:25They're taking me brother away,
17:26probably me best friend at the time, away.
17:28Right.
17:30Right?
17:31I was never told.
17:32Did you miss me then?
17:33Oh, yeah.
17:34Did you?
17:35Of course I bloody did.
17:37It's very difficult to talk about your relationships,
17:40your upbringing and everything else,
17:42and it's something that we don't normally do.
17:44I think this is quite nice in our latter years
17:47that we can reflect on this, talk about it,
17:50the shared adventure.
17:52This is crazy.
17:54It is crazy.
17:55Literally crazy.
17:56I'd like to think that we can,
17:59we can get rid of the ghosts.
18:08What's in the bucket near you then?
18:10Just a bucket for the fish.
18:11A bucket for the fish.
18:12That's bloody optimistic, innit?
18:14That's a bird laughing at us.
18:17800 kilometres behind.
18:20That's a bit limp.
18:23After missing the direct bus to Nanning.
18:26Nanning.
18:27This bus is to Nanning.
18:28Number 13.
18:29Caroline and Tom are bus hopping city to city.
18:33I think after yesterday I felt we didn't succeed much.
18:36This is a very important leg and there's a lot at stake.
18:39We need to move towards the checkpoint fast.
18:43630 kilometres north in Leojo,
18:46known for its green parks and sustainability initiatives.
18:50What's the address?
18:51Oh, wow.
18:52Quad exhaust in the centre?
18:54Oh, wow.
18:55Come on, concentrate, please.
18:56Finn and Seanhead are on waste management.
19:05Do I get gloves to do this or...?
19:07Working for local currency at the Sing Now Chafu Salon.
19:12Ew.
19:13Oh, look at that.
19:14It's a bum cleaner.
19:16That's quite powerful.
19:17Why didn't you tell me to use this instead of the hose?
19:20Yeah.
19:21Yeah, it works smarter, not harder.
19:23There we go.
19:24Me and Finn are getting along fine, to be fair.
19:27Ugh.
19:29I feel like because it's not been so stressful,
19:32we've actually been all right.
19:35What?
19:36You don't look happy to me.
19:38I'm brushing around the rims of the toilet, Shred.
19:40I offered to do the toilet,
19:42but, I mean, she took you there,
19:43so she clearly wants you to do it on me.
19:49Oh, hang on.
19:50The tea that arrives in fifth place will be...
19:52Oh, great.
19:53..back in Sanya.
19:55Let's go.
19:56Thank you very much.
19:58Bye-bye.
19:59And 44 hours after the race leaders departed...
20:02We've always been underdog.
20:03100%.
20:04Everyone's always bitten us off, haven't they?
20:05Exactly.
20:06I think we catch them.
20:07Yin and Gaz are the last team to leave the checkpoint.
20:09Jump in, Yin.
20:10Me and Gaz have, like, a real in-built resilience.
20:13Like, right, OK, we're in fight mode now.
20:15We will give, like, the next leg our all.
20:19We need to figure out what is going to be fast.
20:22There is, like, a railway that goes all the way to come in,
20:25get an overnight if we can.
20:28The motivation is just to try and race hard and fast,
20:30make quick decisions, but the correct decisions.
20:33I don't want to just rush, make the wrong decision,
20:38and we end up in Hong Kong.
20:42You never know with us.
20:44First, they must secure a way to the mainland.
20:48All right, can you take the lead on this?
20:51Yeah, OK.
20:52What we need to know is, like,
20:53what's the quickest way off the island?
20:55Is it via the bus station or via the train?
20:57Yeah, OK.
20:59So, the relationship I have with Gaz now is...
21:03..is amazing.
21:04Before I go, any more questions?
21:05I don't think... I think that's it.
21:06OK.
21:07You could even ask how much roughly the price is if you wanted to.
21:09Oh, OK.
21:10I am so grateful that coming out of the marriage,
21:13where it wasn't pleasant,
21:15that we've managed to retain that relationship.
21:18Do you speak English at all?
21:19No.
21:20Callum, do you speak English at all?
21:23With Gaz, he probably goes in for, like, a softer approach.
21:26He's just got a lovely, friendly way about him.
21:28He smiles and, like, you know, he laughs.
21:30Can you...
21:32Slowly?
21:33Yeah.
21:34Yeah, sorry.
21:35The last year has been a tough one for me.
21:37It's definitely you've been there for me.
21:42After the marriage breakup,
21:43I started seeing someone new, a new partner.
21:46Um...
21:47And...
21:48He was amazing.
21:49He was kind, generous.
21:52He also had this wonderful sense of adventure.
21:56And I thought my life was with him.
21:58September last year,
22:02he passed away very suddenly.
22:04And I was devastated.
22:07Just don't know how to deal with that.
22:10You know, no-one tells you how one minute they're there,
22:14the next minute they're gone forever.
22:25My first concern was Yin.
22:26She was on her own.
22:27She was going through a really, really tough period.
22:30So I just said instantly, come with me.
22:32And, you know, within an hour, she moved in with me.
22:34And she's been there ever since.
22:36What have you got me, soldier?
22:38When I moved over to Gaz's,
22:40it was just such a relief.
22:42And what more do you want from a friend, really?
22:45The timings look good.
22:47We could be in Nanning by tomorrow morning,
22:49which would save us an immense amount of time.
22:51That's the dream.
22:53With him passing has made me really question,
22:56why am I putting things off for another day?
23:00That is one of his legacies that I want to carry on living.
23:03Go out and have an adventure.
23:05Just do it.
23:10He's going to cut it fine.
23:12Oh, you look sneaker.
23:14Yin and Gaz are the third team to head for Nanning,
23:18but are looking to catch up by train.
23:21Hello.
23:22Ni hao.
23:23Where are you going?
23:24We want to go to Nanning.
23:28What ticket can we get?
23:30You can go to Mau Ming.
23:32Mau Ming.
23:33Okay.
23:34Okay, so we can go to...
23:37Can we go to Moo Ming today?
23:40On a sleeper one?
23:42Yes.
23:43Perfect, that's fine.
23:44Well, let's just book it and pray for a miracle.
23:47Moo Ming isn't on here.
23:48It's on the map, right, okay.
23:49What she's saying is, like, there's a train that leaves in 16.48 to Moo Ming.
23:53Wherever the hell that is.
23:54Yeah.
23:55It will arrive at 1.22am.
23:57Yeah.
23:58We can't get a direct route.
23:59We can only go far to a place called Moo Ming or something like that,
24:02which is not even on the map.
24:04I think that's probably our best option at this stage.
24:08Oh, we have to go down that way.
24:10We know we need a miracle to stay in the game.
24:13Oh!
24:14We're desperate to get off the island because the island,
24:16not only did it not want us to get on the island,
24:18but now it doesn't seem to want us to leave the island.
24:21Going to Moo Ming, we'll be at least heading in the right direction.
24:27Ah, we love popcorn, isn't it?
24:29Yeah, I do miss popcorn, actually.
24:30Oh, gosh.
24:31Lost one.
24:38I'm loving this.
24:39Look at that, Letitia.
24:42In Leo Joe, before their pre-booked sleeper train,
24:45Elizabeth and Letitia have squeezed in an evening cruise
24:49on the Leo Jiang River.
24:51It's like synchronised swimmers, isn't it?
24:53Yeah.
24:54To see the world's largest floating musical fountain.
24:58Oh, people aren't proud.
24:59Oh, because look how high it's going.
25:01Look at the breast.
25:02Whoa!
25:03It's such a strange form of entertainment.
25:09That's what I love about China.
25:11Everything's a spectacle.
25:12They go full out.
25:16It's magical, really.
25:23Coming in now.
25:24Gosh.
25:25Ideally, we would have had our bags on here.
25:28on here already.
25:29So we need 20 minutes to get to the hotel,
25:3220 minutes to get to the station.
25:34Oh, my gosh.
25:35Who don't make it?
25:40We're trying to get a taxi over there.
25:41Can you see?
25:42Yeah.
25:43Here, here, here.
25:44Okay.
25:45Vienna Hotel.
25:46We need to go quickly.
25:48Quick, quick, quick, quick, quick.
25:49Okay.
25:50He doesn't know.
25:51Does he know?
25:52It's a hotel?
25:53Yeah, but there's many chains.
25:54Visa all there.
25:55Oh, shit.
25:56So what can we do?
25:57I feel like we should just go because we're far anyway.
25:58At least we're on the move.
25:59Do you know what I mean?
26:00Okay, fine.
26:01Let's just choose one.
26:02Do it.
26:03Do what?
26:04That's the furthest one.
26:05Yeah, furthest one.
26:06I don't think about there being a chain.
26:07No plan.
26:08And I'm worried that we could miss our train.
26:09It was already a rush.
26:10It's the wrong hotel.
26:11I doubt we'll make a train.
26:12That looks really familiar.
26:13I feel like it's going to be a good train.
26:14So, what can we do?
26:15So, what can we do?
26:16I feel like we should just go because we're far anyway.
26:17At least we're on the move, do you know what I mean?
26:18Okay, fine.
26:19Let's just choose one.
26:20Do what?
26:21Do what?
26:22That's the furthest one.
26:23Yeah, furthest one.
26:24Yeah, furthest one.
26:25Yeah, furthest one.
26:26We didn't think about there being a chain.
26:29I didn't plan.
26:30I'm worried that we could miss our train.
26:31If it's the wrong hotel, I doubt we'll make a train.
26:33That looks really familiar.
26:35I feel like it's here.
26:36Is it?
26:37Do you have a health?
26:38It's here.
26:39It's here.
26:40Where?
26:41Is that here?
26:42No, it's not that.
26:43For for sake, yeah.
26:46She's a woman.
26:48Stop it.
26:49It's not the right hotel.
26:50Yeah, it's the wrong one.
26:52Shit.
26:53Yeah.
26:54Feeling very bummed right now.
27:00I can't believe we missed the night train.
27:03Now we're a day behind.
27:04We've also spent money on that, so that's money gone.
27:08Um, and we'll probably have to spend money again here
27:12for accommodation tonight.
27:14So, we need to get our bags and now think about accommodation
27:19for the night.
27:21The sisters must wait until morning to continue their journey north.
27:25Of all legs for this to happen,
27:27it's the one you don't want it to happen, you know?
27:29This is such a big mishap.
27:31It could cost us a lot.
27:39Do we just go back? I feel bad.
27:41Everywhere is selling something to eat.
27:44Yeah.
27:45Nestled in the verdant hills of the Yunnan province, Funing County.
27:50The area is a tapestry of ethnicities coexisting with different languages, cultures and culinary traditions.
28:00It seems a lot more open and green.
28:04Calming, I don't know.
28:05It's really relaxing.
28:07Ooh, fruits.
28:08I love how they just sell in the back of these tuk-tuk things.
28:11How many do you want, Mumma?
28:13Four would do.
28:14Would be lovely if we can get four.
28:15Ni ha.
28:16Two.
28:17Wow.
28:18Two yen.
28:19I know my money, but I left it on the side of the chair in the hotel.
28:31No, you didn't.
28:32I promise you.
28:33Unless you picked up, I promise you I left the other side.
28:35Do you want me to run back?
28:37I can't with this.
28:38The cleaner will be there.
28:39Remember, if they don't have it, the cleaner is going into the room.
28:40I know, I know, I know.
28:41If we lose the money, but we're bugging, basically.
28:42Sure, sure.
28:44Wow.
28:45Ah.
28:46Oh, it's not here.
28:47I left it on the back of that chair.
28:50Oh, no.
28:51You went to Switzerland on his back.
28:52Oh, no.
28:53You went to Switzerland on his back.
28:54Oh, no.
28:55Oh, no.
28:56Oh, no.
28:57Oh, no.
28:58Oh, no.
28:59Oh, no.
29:00Oh, no.
29:01Oh, no.
29:02Oh, no.
29:03Oh, no.
29:04Oh, no.
29:05Oh, no.
29:06He went to Switzerland on his own first and actually left his bag on the train.
29:10What do I actually do?
29:12When he was in South America, he left his bag in the taxi with passport in it and everything.
29:18Hi, um, in 6.09, no, I left a money belt.
29:25I was hoping he'd be a bit more careful and would have learnt by his mistakes.
29:28It has to be here.
29:31I'm really worried.
29:32It would hugely affect us.
29:33It was a lot of money.
29:34It's, uh, a, a, a, a, a black with yen.
29:38Oh, jeez, for someone.
29:39With yen.
29:40Oh.
29:41Oh.
29:50What's up?
29:51What's up?
29:52What's up?
29:53What's up?
29:54What's up?
29:55Oh.
29:56Oh.
29:57Oh.
29:58Oh.
29:59Oh.
30:00Oh.
30:01Oh.
30:02Oh.
30:04Oh.
30:06Oh.
30:07Oh.
30:08Oh.
30:09I was an idiot for leaving it.
30:12I will never do that again.
30:13but we got it back as a lesson we learned.
30:17Hi.
30:20Found it.
30:22OK, let's go. Right, we need to get on. We have to taxi now.
30:25And it's on you now? It's on me.
30:27And how did you not remember it? I don't know.
30:32550 kilometres east...
30:35We're already late. We just wanted to get a train straight away.
30:39Elizabeth and Letitia are also having money troubles.
30:43I still love it here. I just want to leave now.
30:47Hello.
30:49Yeah.
30:52OK, thank you.
30:54These past two days, we spent way more than we expected to spend.
31:01Before travelling to tonight's homestay in the remote outskirts of Anshun,
31:07they need to exchange pounds for yuan.
31:10We can afford the late training, but we can only afford that journey.
31:13You'll end up arriving at our destination with no money.
31:18OK. Oh.
31:20Oh, here it is.
31:22It does look shut, though.
31:23Oh, gosh.
31:25Let's go to the ABC bank.
31:26Yeah.
31:26Where are you sitting in the bank?
31:29It's that blue thing there.
31:30It's closed, doesn't it look?
31:32They're all closed, basically.
31:35I feel like we've had it quite smooth for the two legs
31:39and feels like you can easily just lose your first place, isn't it?
31:45Just with a few mishaps.
31:46After exhausting their options for changing money,
31:51the sisters head to the train station they failed to reach last night,
31:55ready to spend their last yuan on tickets out of town.
31:58We have got 12 yuan left on us.
32:04Literally equivalent to, like, £1.30.
32:08It's risky.
32:09There's no point of us staying here,
32:11so you might as well just be moving forward.
32:15Hello.
32:16Hi, mate.
32:16I'm worried about being eliminated from not having money now.
32:20Whilst moving, we all feel like we're still in the race, kind of.
32:23Still in Phu Ning.
32:30Oh, it's all here.
32:32We used to have you helping in the kitchen when you were little as well.
32:35While waiting for their train to Kunming,
32:38Caroline and Tom are working a shift at Miss Lee's restaurant.
32:41Do you remember having to sit on the naughty step?
32:43Yeah.
32:44I remember once I said the word bugger.
32:46Oh, oh.
32:46I remember that.
32:47And what was the only word you were allowed to say?
32:49Golly gosh.
32:50Golly gosh, that was a really rude word.
32:51Chopping fragrant laurento mushrooms for her signature hot pot.
32:56Good.
32:57Why not be very sharp?
32:58Three, okay, okay.
32:59Just one of 800 varieties harvested across the region.
33:04My first ever proper job was a kitchen porter.
33:07It was one of those jobs that you do when you're young, you know.
33:09It's kind of taught you to work a little bit.
33:10I think it was more probably the lesson that it was teaching me
33:13rather than the actual job itself.
33:15Learning how to hold a job down.
33:16I think so.
33:16I'm a labourer.
33:18You know, I have to lift heavy bags of cement and bricks to my shoulder
33:21so it keeps you fit and it keeps you active.
33:23I don't think I could do an office job.
33:25I'm just, I'm hoping I find a thing I get really passionate about.
33:29And do you feel under pressure from Daddy and I
33:31to try and forge a career or anything?
33:33Well, no one wants to purposely let anybody down, do they?
33:36I don't wish anything for you apart from absolute health and happiness.
33:40Did it ever bother you that I didn't finish GCSEs?
33:44I obviously would have preferred you to have had qualifications
33:47and a grounding age 16.
33:49Yeah.
33:50I'd say probably one of the hardest things I've dealt with
33:52is probably getting kicked out of school.
33:55Me and my friends started smoking a bit of weed at school
33:57thinking, oh, this is cool.
34:00We got called into the office
34:01and from there we basically got kicked out of school.
34:05I think you might just have been drifting.
34:07Yeah.
34:08What happens if I never find that thing?
34:09Because there are people who don't.
34:11Never let fear of failure prevent you from starting something.
34:15It's a lot easier said than done.
34:16I know.
34:17And it's something I've suffered from.
34:19Yeah.
34:20I'd hate to see you do the same.
34:22I think perhaps he lost a sense of direction
34:24and he probably lost confidence as well.
34:27That's another reason for us dreading the elimination.
34:30It would be lovely if this race helped him discover
34:33more things about himself
34:35and I think that's just the best opportunity
34:37and I so hope we can make it.
34:43Guizhou, a province carved with deep gorges,
34:47meao villages and one of Asia's largest waterfalls,
34:52Huanggorshu.
34:56We've not really been to this kind of China yet, have we?
34:58I like it.
34:59I'm enjoying the peace and the fresh air.
35:02Escaping the cities,
35:04Finn and Seanard have made it to its heart,
35:07Chiangling Park.
35:10Home to a thriving troop of macaque monkeys.
35:13I just want to see the monkeys!
35:15Look at that little turtle.
35:16Aww, cute!
35:17Hello!
35:18It's a very different feel today.
35:25Look how high we've got!
35:26This is so nice!
35:29It's also a nice way for us to make memories that'll last forever.
35:33Look at it!
35:35It's beautiful.
35:36I'm well aware that this race is gonna make or break us and I'm hoping it, obviously it makes
35:44us because the next steps in our lives are such big steps.
35:49Oh, there's monkeys, Shred.
35:52Really?
35:52Where?
35:53Yeah, there's loads of them, yeah.
35:54Oh, look at that baby one!
35:55Don't go too quickly towards the Shred.
35:58Oh, that is so cute. I want one.
36:05You can't.
36:06I've always wanted to marry young, wanted to have kids young. I'm hoping for engagement
36:15and marriage in the next five years.
36:16With one child, a stable income, a house. This is the wildlife I've been craving.
36:25My childhood was like the best thing you could ever want. Family really matters to me because
36:31of how I've grown up.
36:32They've got very red arses, don't they?
36:34They do.
36:35Trying to get the perfect bum shot.
36:41My childhood was definitely a lot different compared to Shred's.
36:45Oh, wow, this is actually well worth it. Look at that!
36:49That's lovely.
36:51My dad left. Then it was just me, my mum, my brother.
36:56When your parents get divorced at a young age, you don't necessarily know what's going
36:59on. You kind of just think they're splitting up. Just one house, another house. Kind of
37:03look for the positives, I think. Two Christmases, then you grow up and you realise it's really
37:09not like that.
37:11The idea of marriage doesn't scare me. It's just, I know things can go wrong. You just
37:18have to make sure it is definitely with the right person. I do not want to be going home
37:22in the next few days. I'd rather be here with you than enjoying this. I want more challenges
37:28to see if you are the one I want to be with. I mean, I don't really question it, so I'm
37:36pretty certain that you're the one I want to be with. But I know it's not easy for you.
37:42I mean, obviously sometimes you do wonder, like, is our communication ever going to be
37:49right?
37:50I do think we've started to understand how to get further and actually succeed in the
37:56race and succeed together, I think.
38:00What is it?
38:03It's a train, I think. A very loud train.
38:08Let's go. Time to get back into the race.
38:14As Finn and Sean Ed head to the station...
38:16Are you guys from UK?
38:18We are, they're from England.
38:20Taking part in a race, OK?
38:22A race?
38:23A race, yeah.
38:24Brian and Melvin are travelling by train to Kunming, the last transport hub before the
38:30checkpoint.
38:31Where's the train to Shangri-La? Is that from this station or the other one?
38:35It's from the central...
38:39Central station.
38:40Yeah.
38:41So the plan is, get off here.
38:43We get a metro.
38:44To central, yeah.
38:46We can catch a train to Shangri-La in the morning.
38:49Yeah.
38:50That sounds like a plan.
38:52What a bit of look me to you.
38:54Yes, really, really.
38:57Excellent.
38:58Thank you very much.
39:00My pleasure.
39:01And if any of this is wrong, we'll come back and we'll tell you.
39:08We're like brothers.
39:10Similar haircuts.
39:11Yeah.
39:12Yeah.
39:13On their long haul train to Maoming...
39:16Maoming, I'm trying to find, is it that way or that way on the map?
39:20...Yin and Gaz need to locate their destination.
39:23Excuse me, do you speak English?
39:25A little.
39:26A little.
39:27Ah.
39:28I'm trying to find Maoming on the map, but it's not written down.
39:33Could you roughly show me where it is on the map, if that's OK?
39:37You think it's about there?
39:39Maoming.
39:40On that line there?
39:41Yes.
39:42Ah, shit.
39:43Yeah.
39:44Yeah.
39:45Yeah.
39:46Oh, sorry.
39:47All right.
39:48Thank you very much.
39:51Right.
39:52He has spoken to some young chap.
39:55He's shown me where we are, where we're heading to on the map.
39:58We're heading there.
39:59OK.
40:00I feel a bit concerned in that we've kind of almost heading the wrong way.
40:06Their earlier decision means they are heading 250 kilometres northeast,
40:12in the opposite direction to the third checkpoint.
40:16I don't know, it's hard, because it just seems to be...
40:18Every time you talk to someone, it's a different story.
40:21We're fucked, basically.
40:23Gods are against us.
40:25It does feel like that, yeah, it does feel like that.
40:28We've been sinners in our past life, I think.
40:31Do you think that's what it is?
40:33Let's give it a shot.
40:41Going into a rural area where, pardon anybody, it's not ideal.
40:45It's ideal.
40:46Out of local currency, Elizabeth and Letitia are on a train heading north to their planned
40:52homestay.
40:53Hello.
40:54Hello.
40:55And do you know, Anshushi?
40:57Can we get cash there?
40:59Come.
41:00I don't have a kiss.
41:02Let me...
41:03Oh.
41:04Let me have a try.
41:06OK.
41:08Let me have a try.
41:09OK.
41:11Let me have a try.
41:12How is he going to get cash?
41:13I don't know where he's going.
41:15Where could he have gone?
41:16Where did he go?
41:18What did he say?
41:19Let me just check.
41:20Let me try.
41:21Let me try.
41:22Oh, he's coming back.
41:24Has he got anything on his hands?
41:27I feel like...
41:28Oh, my gosh.
41:29I see a flash of red.
41:30Oh, my gosh.
41:31Oh, wow.
41:32What?
41:33Oh, my gosh.
41:34Oh, my gosh.
41:35Oh, my gosh.
41:36Oh, my gosh.
41:37OK.
41:38Sorry, sorry.
41:39Sorry, sorry.
41:40Which is very emotional right now.
41:41It's a long day.
41:42How much do you have?
41:43350, yeah.
41:44350, yeah.
41:45350, yeah.
41:46350, yeah.
41:47We can give you, um, 40?
41:49Yeah.
41:50Yeah.
41:51OK.
41:52Oh, shit.
41:53Thank you so much.
41:54Well...
41:55That was so good.
41:56I've literally got tears in my eyes.
41:58Literally.
41:59This whole day, this is all we realised.
42:01We were able to get some money.
42:17Minutes.
42:18What are the odds?
42:19Before getting stranded.
42:20Yeah.
42:21But today, we took a risk, you know.
42:23And it paid off.
42:25It really paid off.
42:26It's a good feeling.
42:27Back in the race.
42:331,100 kilometres from the checkpoint,
42:36the sisters have made it to the remote Shweyuen village.
42:41Hello.
42:42Hello.
42:43Welcome to my house.
42:44Oh, thank you.
42:45Oh, I love it.
42:46Staying in Ms Hur's countryside home.
42:51Oh.
42:52You can, you can, you can eat now.
42:54You can eat now.
42:55Yeah.
42:56Wow.
42:57It's a feast.
42:58It's a feast.
42:59Don't, don't be shy.
43:00No, thank you.
43:01Don't be shy, just eat.
43:03Mm-hmm.
43:04Where, where are you from?
43:06Sichuan.
43:07Sichuan.
43:08Oh.
43:09Sichuan.
43:10You know?
43:11Yeah.
43:12And when did you come here?
43:13It's summer.
43:14I don't like live in city.
43:18I like countryside.
43:21Yeah.
43:22The air is more fresh and more free.
43:29I want to find some new lifestyle.
43:33Mm.
43:34It's slow.
43:35Yeah.
43:36Slow lifestyle.
43:37Yeah.
43:38Slow life.
43:39Compared to the city.
43:40Yeah.
43:41Wow.
43:42Honestly, if this doesn't make you fall in love with China, I don't know what will.
43:45The people here are just so hospitable.
43:47They really extend their welcome and yeah, they just share their love so openly.
43:54Our lead is pretty much gone.
43:57I'm just more worried about being eliminated because sharing this journey with my sister,
44:02I feel like we're just getting started to, you know, get to know each other and I want
44:07to continue on that journey.
44:15I can't see anybody.
44:36I'd be a bit gutted if I'm honest, if I did see somebody now.
44:40Because I do think we've done all right.
44:43We could do with the train moving now, couldn't we?
44:45I know we could.
44:47Come on, move.
44:50Kunming, a pivotal transport hub for all routes from southern China to the northwest part
44:56of Yunnan province.
44:59There we go.
45:00The doors are shut in, Brian.
45:01I just shut the door.
45:04Right, we're in.
45:05As Brian and Melvin depart...
45:07We're away.
45:10Winding their way 600 kilometres up the mountains to the third checkpoint.
45:15A little bit anxious at the minute.
45:17Yeah.
45:19Elizabeth and Letitia are trying to pick up the pace after leaving their homestay.
45:24This has been a very difficult long leg.
45:27Mm, yeah.
45:28Quite possibly.
45:29We've lost our lead.
45:30We're just trying to stay in the game so we're not eliminated.
45:34We're still going to push right until the end.
45:37Shangri-La Railways.
45:39Well, I'm guessing this way because everybody's heading that way.
45:43Go, go, go, go, go, go.
45:46Shangri-La.
45:48Sitting at an altitude nearly 4,000 metres above sea level.
45:54Dominating its skyline, the Ganden Sumsteling Monastery.
45:59Once home to 2,000 monks.
46:02Close by, the Songstam Linka Hotel.
46:07The third checkpoint.
46:09Where only the first four teams to arrive will continue in the race.
46:14Shangri-La, Brian.
46:15Shangri-La.
46:16Good God, look at that.
46:18That's pretty.
46:19That is okay.
46:20You're a few hundred feet above sea level.
46:22If you feel yourself getting lightheaded, just ease up.
46:25On foot, head towards the Ganden Sumsteling Monastery
46:30and find the Twin Deer Dharma Wheel.
46:34That's got to be the monastery up here, hasn't it?
46:36Got to be.
46:37There's a gate there.
46:38Put on a bit of weight.
46:40You've had it, haven't you?
46:43Smell that air.
46:44It's good.
46:45Keep this pace on.
46:46Are you happy with this?
46:47Yeah, yeah.
46:48That's where we're heading.
46:51Well, here's the entrance, all right?
46:53Okay, wait.
46:54Hi.
46:55Hello.
46:56Do you know where the Twin Deer Dharma Wheel is?

47:37Sean Ed, stop going on the straw.
47:38No, I'm not.
47:39I just want to go quickly.
47:40Slow down then.
47:41Well, no, I'm not walking like a slug.
47:45As they forge ahead, Caroline and Tom make their march.
47:49So immediately we get off.
47:51Let's look at tickets.
47:52Onward travel.
47:53First thing.
47:54Okay.
47:55Do you feel nervous?
47:56God, yes.
47:57This is our last chance, yeah, to stay in the race.
