00:00It's scary out there in Mother Nature, all by yourself.
00:25This place is ruggedly beautiful and totally brutal.
00:30This is the most dangerous thing that I've ever done.
00:38This is where it's going to start to really test me.
00:40It's tough.
00:41It's going to get tougher.
00:45I thought being alone would be the easy part.
00:48I've done 14 days since I've eaten.
00:52It's a fucking night there.
00:56Nothing can be free.
00:59I guess I'm going to have to kill again.
01:05If I could get that wallaby, that's the game.
01:07Bring it on Tazzy.
01:16Shit.
01:17I'm mad to come out of here and do this.
01:20That's all numb.
01:22Trostfire.
01:24Feels like I've broken the ankle.
01:28The best I can do now is just keep going.
01:35It's not working out the way I planned it.
01:39I'm slowly starving.
01:41It's relentless.
01:42To try and make some money.
01:43Woo!
01:44Right, where are we going to skin you?
01:46The lake's rising.
01:47It's relentless, man.
01:48This is now my beach.
01:49It's the beginning of the end.
01:51All I want to do is just go home.
01:53I've got nothing left.
01:58The end, I feel, is near.
02:02I bet nobody thought I was going to catch a wallaby.
02:16The forager is back in the game.
02:19Oh, he ate the jerky.
02:22Now the calm knows that's where my food is.
02:27Been a bit of an emotional roller coaster for me today.
02:30I'm alone all the time in my life, you know, by choice.
02:33But it has its sacrifices, and that's relationships.
02:37Shit, I can see a little trout.
02:40Oh, we got it.
02:41Yes.
02:42Finally, it happened.
02:44After a good three weeks, it'll bugger all, really.
02:49I can just keep this up, man.
02:52I feel like we could stay here for a really long time, you know.
02:56It's just a question.
02:57Can we keep it up?
03:14Well, good morning.
03:42Day 31.
03:44And today, it's officially a month.
03:48All right.
03:49Let's be brave.
03:50It's pretty cold, but just thought,
03:53have a quick look at how I'm going in terms of weight loss.
03:56So, let's start with the legs.
04:04Man, I've never seen that before.
04:05That's a fair hole.
04:08It's pretty skinny.
04:09It's pretty skinny.
04:11Stomach.
04:12Skinny.
04:13Front on, it doesn't look too bad, but side on was a bit concerning when I, yeah, touched
04:22my ribs there.
04:23I've never seen them sticking out quite so much.
04:27Yeah.
04:28So, certainly, certainly losing weight pretty quick.
04:39I reckon I'm probably the lightest I've ever been.
04:41That's what happens.
04:42That's what happens.
04:43There's highs and lows.
04:45No point stressing about that.
04:47Yeah.
04:48All I can do is all I can do.
04:50And survival, 90% mental.
04:57Deuteronomy 31, verse 6.
04:59Be strong and courageous.
05:02Not be afraid or scared.
05:06Your God himself goes with you.
05:11Not a bad-looking day.
05:13Is it blowing?
05:16I'll do some worming, but maybe that'll help me warm up.
05:20My feet are still not warm, even with four socks on.
05:25That's what's getting to me at the moment.
05:28Of course, when your metabolism's slowing right down, you're not generating much body heat,
05:36either.
05:39Oh, yes, oh, yes, oh, yes.
05:45Ah!
05:46Oh, that's what makes a worm hunter's heart sore.
05:53Oh, yeah.
05:56That's what I'm talking about.
05:59Oh, two big ones.
06:02You beauty.
06:06Oh, OK.
06:08Whoa.
06:09That was the closest I've come to passing out.
06:20Didn't stand up that quick.
06:23That's a reminder
06:26to take it slow.
06:27I didn't just get light-headed.
06:28I did get a little bit of tunnel vision for a couple of seconds there.
06:46That was the closest I've ever got to fainting in my life.
06:48I guess that's a sign of low blood pressure.
06:59Like your heartbeat, you know, your body has these systems in place.
07:03And little warning signs to take it easy, so I shower.
07:06On a mission today, it's very windy out, but there's no rain, so I'm gonna go collect the
07:28trail cams that I have over near the wallaby trap.
07:31Hopefully, I'll be bringing back a wallaby.
07:36One month out here, living alone in the Tasmanian wilderness.
07:45I fished so much yesterday and no luck, then I'm back to no food again.
07:51I am concerned that my days are numbered.
07:55If I could get that wallaby, for me, potentially, that's the game.
08:00So I am hopeful, but I'm also getting to the point that I'm like,
08:03this is my last shot, because I can't afford to be burning the calories like I was.
08:12Trekking over here just saps me. It takes it out of me.
08:15All right, so trap is as left it.
08:25So we'll have a look and see if there's been anybody sniffing around.
08:28No, no, actually, it's over.
08:37Okay, so obviously I've scared the wallaby off enough.
08:39He hasn't come back, which sucks.
08:44I worked so hard on that wallaby trap.
08:46I just don't think it's going to work.
08:55That's frustrating.
08:57I feel like I was so close.
09:10I'm glad I got home when I did, because it has not stopped raining since.
09:21But feeling a little bit housebound.
09:25It's hard, because obviously the food is the motivation.
09:29When you try and try and try and you still don't get...
09:31I can't help but lose that motivation.
09:38I have very little patience right now.
09:42I can just tell my mood is shifting.
09:46That walk took it out of me.
09:50Sitting around doing nothing just isn't good for my head space.
09:53You know, when I'm busy, that's me at my happiest.
10:15Right, well, my hand lines are good to go for whenever the wind decides to bugger off.
10:23I'm not good at relaxing. I'm not good at sitting still.
10:31Now what?
10:53It always takes this gargantuan time to get ready every morning.
11:11And I was like, wow, I've been doing this for a month.
11:15My expectations are so different to what I had when I came out here.
11:23I was coming on alone. I'd make my traps and by week two have everything sorted.
11:28I'd be trapping, hunting, shelter me up, I'd be dry, I'd be cosy.
11:33No, none of that. None of that happened.
11:36I've been coming on close to 30 days of being in mud. Continuously.
11:44Just show you what I'm living with.
11:47Mud's there.
11:51I've got water flowing through the floor.
11:56Look at that.
11:57I've only got one dry corner. Just down there.
12:15Almost every day I've been here, we've had weather.
12:19As much as I'm loving the time, it's really oppressive.
12:34Flipping point.
12:39I can't get warm, can't get dry and I can't keep dry.
12:43And my fingers are just frozen. I don't know if you can see that.
12:49I'm noticing that I'm getting irritated.
12:54That's the first sign that I'm struggling.
12:59Cold.
13:02Cracks down there.
13:08So cold.
13:14I just want to fire.
13:20Getting in a negative mindset and having a real impact on my mental health.
13:24That is my biggest fear.
13:28Because I actually think more so than food, my attitude's going to keep me here.
13:32If you're a bad headspace,
13:34I don't know if you're a bad headspace, that's when somebody's going to tap.
13:46Boom!
13:48We're just so close.
13:49There's nothing dry.
13:55I've been fucking wet.
13:57Everything.
13:59Nothing dries here.
14:01Nothing dries.
14:03How did you not keep going?
14:11Fuck!
14:12I've never lived in a place like this before.
14:28So.
14:39Cruisy day.
14:45Mmm.
14:46I'll show you the soup this wobbly stock from the bulls so good that's the man fern heart
14:57that's pretty good that's soft like potato and this one is my favorite it's the young
15:05shoots of the back wing fern and it seriously is like green beans seriously all I do is talk
15:13about food it's one of the best things about being out here you get so hungry and your body is craving
15:26nutrition and your taste buds become desensitized no sensitized and then you find food and it's like
15:40the best thing in the world it's the tastiest thing you've ever eaten because you haven't eaten
15:48in so long
15:51and after this pot of soup is done we're moving on to the jerky
16:01the jerky is so good it's got a good smoky flavor this is a lot of meat it's going to take me a while
16:11to get through this I feel like I'm in a good place strategically with food I did not enjoy killing
16:19the wallaby I don't really want to do it again so if I have like three strips of wallaby jerky a day
16:27that would last me a month my morale is usually generally good but then when I've got food in me
16:35a positivity out my arse I'm sickeningly optimistic yeah I think I think we're gonna be good I feel
16:51very comfortable alone out here I grew up in a really dodgy area in Glasgow it's a kind of place
16:59where people would break into your house and steal stuff while you're still in it so for safety we
17:10moved to the highlands of Scotland I just spent a lot of time in nature just playing out alone
17:18actually fantasize what if I didn't have to go home what if I could just stay out here
17:27really really bad news I've been in and out of the shelter all day and I just went in just now
17:42and my bag of jerky was all over the floor with huge holes I didn't think the qual would come
17:57at this time of the day middle of the day with me going in and out of my shelter
18:04and I've lost a lot I've lost a lot of jerky
18:11oh my god
18:17this is a motherfucking derogation I see you be shite
18:22look at him
18:28where you at where you at
18:36Oh, my God.
18:40It's so grazen.
18:42Oh, my God.
18:44Shushed.
18:48Oh!
18:49Where you at?
18:51Get! Get! Get!
18:56I've lost half my jerky,
18:59and a quoll...
19:01was in my bed.
19:04I've lost a lot.
19:06I've lost a lot of jerky.
19:09If you give us back the jerky,
19:11we'll pretend it never happened.
19:15Oh, my God.
19:22I'm going to sleep with this tonight.
19:24I'm going to curl up with it in my sleeping bag,
19:27cradling it, hugging it.
19:30First part of my childhood, rough area in Glasgow.
19:35That's exactly what they do.
19:36You're sitting right here,
19:38you just walk straight in and start stealing stuff.
19:48He was on my bed.
19:54Middle of the day.
19:57This was supposed to last me a month.
20:00It's not...
20:02I guess I'm going to have to kill again anyway.
20:05Just another one wallaby.
20:08This place wants to...
20:10wants me to get over my...
20:13reluctance to kill things.
20:17This place wants to turn me into a killer.
20:19I wonder how many of Ted they are.
20:20Or whether old Tanner still is.
20:21I wonder how many of Ted they are.
20:25or whether old Tanner's still here.
20:26I don't think so.
20:27I wonder how many of Ted they are.
20:30Or whether old Tanner's still here.
20:31I don't think so.
20:35Statistically, it's just...
20:36I don't think so.
20:37I reckon...
20:38What are we a month and a bit?
20:39We'd be probably lost...
20:40we'd be probably lost...
20:42what the most people do...
20:43I don't think so.
20:44I think...
20:45what are we a month and a bit?
20:46Or whether all ten are still here.
20:50I don't think so.
20:54Statistically, it's just, I don't think so.
20:58I reckon
21:02what are we? A month and a bit.
21:06We'd be probably lost at least four.
21:10Be my guess.
21:14And if we have, I hope they got
21:18what they wanted out here.
21:22My mood's down one notch
21:26today. It's just niggling away at me
21:30that I need to catch a fish.
21:34We've only got, what, two feeds left
21:46tonight and tomorrow night.
21:48And then we're going hungry.
21:50Real hungry.
21:52So that's going to be an interesting concept.
22:02I can't say I've had any really bad lows.
22:08I'm coming out here.
22:10You know, I've done most of all this.
22:12But I haven't starved before.
22:18But now I'm in a position,
22:20because I haven't caught any off
22:22a few days because I haven't had bait.
22:24So I'll have another dig around,
22:26see what the day brings.
22:38I'm ducking, I'm weaving already,
22:40and I'm still inside a camp.
22:42But when you're in a situation like I am now,
22:50there's this constant sort of anxiety
22:54thinking about, you know,
22:56are we going to get another one?
22:58Are we going to get another one after that?
23:00With the lake rising like it is,
23:06this may be the last time I can even get
23:08to the worm patch.
23:12I'm going to go to make a start.
23:16Back in here somewhere.
23:18And doing this is a big risk,
23:20because this probably burns up
23:22enough calories of nearly two meals,
23:24you know?
23:26You know, I'm still carrying a lot of weight.
23:30But I know it's not all about weight.
23:32Your blood pressure drops off,
23:34you're up, you're gone.
23:38It's hard work doing that.
23:40It doesn't look it, but it is.
23:44This is all I can do,
23:45is just turn over what I've turned over.
23:48Just see if I can find a little piece
23:50somewhere I haven't done.
23:56Just hope one sticks his head up.
24:02All right.
24:10You fucking beauty.
24:12Check this shit out.
24:17That's made the trip worthwhile.
24:20Look at him.
24:21Woohoo!
24:23Get in there.
24:24Perseverance pays off.
24:26Just keep at it.
24:28All right.
24:30We'll go through the rest of this shit here then.
24:32What are they doing up in that stone?
24:35Maybe it drains better or something.
24:40Oh no, there's another one.
24:41Fucking mother just hit the jackpot.
24:44My God.
24:46Woohoo!
24:48Well jackpot to me,
24:49you will never again ever see a man
24:53so happy about two big fat worms.
24:59I've done a month.
25:00I've got a month.
25:01I've done a month.
25:03And that's sort of one tick in the box.
25:06Hope.
25:09It's an amazing thing.
25:11And now the aim is to do another month.
25:19I'm going to guard these fucking worms of my life.
25:25Because they could be the answer to getting me well on me way
25:28to the next 30 days.
25:29Fuck yeah.
25:39Fuck yeah.
25:59It's raining again. This morning is actually my hardest morning. I'm going a bit loopy
26:18sitting in there in my head. This is when you think about like tapping out. I could
26:28just tap and then a boat would turn up and go home. So I'm going to go for a walk, not
26:41sitting in this cabin. So much of my strategy out here is looking after my attitude and I'm
26:47starting to really believe that the key way for me to look after my attitude is to do things
26:53that I need to do mentally. Like go out and see the natural world. Explore my land. Try
27:03and discover something new each day. I've always gone to the natural world to find comfort.
27:12I'm here on Livingston Island in Antarctica. And the elephant seals population is just
27:22starting to come back. I'm an environmental scientist but really I'm a naturalist and I
27:28focus on environmental education. I've got a heap of turtles and we've been rehabilitating
27:32them and today they're getting released. My work really is my passion and it's getting
27:37people into nature. Should we roll over a log? And our kids are really a part of that.
27:42See what's underneath, hey? My hope is that they have a good comprehension of what it is
27:46to be human, where food comes from and life and death. And I think in our Western world we're
27:53completely and utterly sheltered from that. Look what you got, Hux. What are those?
27:58Isopods. Isopods. Very good. Can I touch them? Yeah, you can touch them. I fundamentally believe
28:07if I can get people to see nature in a different way, I believe that they'll do a better job
28:12of taking care of it. Should we put it back where it lives? Yeah. What do we say
28:16in a nice pond? Bye. Bye. Ah, yes. This is great. Look at this. Some sort of species of coprophytic
28:30fungi sitting on some wombat pern. The beautiful thing about that is it's digesting it and it's
28:37releasing it back into the soil. This is about one of the best things I've seen all day. Just
28:44doing my best to do the things that I love and this is something I love. This isn't feeding
28:51me but it's feeding my heart. I'm so glad I came for a walk. That's a massive boost of my morale.
29:09Nature's where I'm healing my hurts. My thought processes are really clear and I'm feeling
29:17healthy, like mentally. And now I've got this focus on what I really need, which is food.
29:26Right now it's food. There's more I want to do here. I'm not dumb.
29:35It was some overall, but I don't believe it was. I want to be a risk in the world.
29:42Trusty Stade.
30:03Ah, the good old spear.
30:18This is like my FBOSS card out there, so my only wallet.
30:25This is how I get food.
30:27But sometimes it doesn't even work, declines, can't read the card.
30:34Here we go.
30:37Right now I'm relying pretty much solely on my spear to get food so that I can stay here.
30:46The net too.
30:49I see some baby trout or some whitebait.
30:54Ready to roll.
31:01I haven't had a feed in days really, not a decent one.
31:14Feeling a bit like a possum these days.
31:21Sort of very inactive during the day and when the sun goes down I get all excited.
31:33Ready to go and do some stuff.
31:37Try and get some food.
31:40Right, I'm just going to go out on this log now and see if we can spot a trout.
31:52I'm going to go out on this log now and see if we can spot a trout.
31:59I'm going to go out on this log now and see if we can spot a trout.
32:04Oh man, it's so disappointing to see them and then just screw it up.
32:27No luck.
32:37So my primitive IFBOSS card did not work tonight.
32:42It declined.
32:44We've only been here a month.
32:48I just keep worrying about how long I can stay here.
32:53Keep feeling my stomach.
32:56How much fat is left.
33:01What is that noise?
33:03Something up in the tray up here.
33:27Did you see that?
33:30Oh my god, they're so close.
33:36We're getting close.
33:43I'm getting so close.
33:49Like a bit of food would go a long way.
33:55Or should I.
33:56Jump.
33:57down.
33:58Alone, Australia, powered by Kia.
34:01It's the ultimate human endurance challenge.
34:04The battle is on to survive alone in the rugged Tasmanian
34:07wilderness, with the winner taking home a prize with $250,000.
34:12Well, frickin' heck, we were close then.
34:29About another metre closer, and I could have grabbed that thing.
34:33Probably could have just dropped a net on top of it.
34:37Just gonna get out of here now, I don't want to spook him.
34:42It really seemed to be having trouble picking me up.
34:47Maybe it was the dripping off the trees that was keeping it sort of hunched over.
34:54So I feel like it was pissin' down.
34:56And a net.
35:02A little bit more in our favour, and I think we could get him.
35:12Man, I just kept thinkin' about those patty melons.
35:28Every day we're out here, that day gets a little bit closer.
35:33That day we're gonna catch a wallaby, or a patty melon.
35:37And now that I know I can get that close, I'm gonna be pretty determined to really, you know, get one.
35:46Got a bit of a fire in my belly all of a sudden to get food, you know.
35:54I feel like I'm on the cusp.
35:57Yeah, I'm just motivated, I think.
36:01Make some stuff happen, you know.
36:03We gotta make some shit happen.
36:05We're making a net.
36:09That's the plan.
36:12Alright.
36:14Time to start.
36:18Use this hand line first.
36:23So we're getting frickin' close, man.
36:26Which is exciting.
36:27It's gonna be virtually invisible.
36:30Even to me.
36:32Okay.
36:34I think this bowing net is probably my best option.
36:37Because it means I can get fish.
36:39But also, I could potentially go out hunting at night for wallabies and patty melons.
36:45And potentially I could get one of them with the net.
36:50One of these nights I'm gonna go out and we're gonna manage to get one.
36:55Starting to feel like it could happen, you know.
37:00We're in this one for the long haul, man.
37:03We've just gotta be patient.
37:07Just keep chippin' away.
37:08I feel like I have one natural talent, which is the ability to do something that's not enjoyable.
37:29I can just do it.
37:30And I can do it for a long time.
37:33It's my one talent in life, is just to keep going.
37:42This net could change the game, I reckon.
37:45I wanna share something with you.
37:58I decided to bring a photograph that makes me happy, makes me smile, and makes me laugh.
38:17And that's a photograph of my sister.
38:20You make me so happy.
38:24And she's gonna kill me for it.
38:29Because it just reminds me of the funny times that we have together.
38:35Because we have such a good time and we just laugh together.
38:39Non-stop.
38:40Non-stop.
38:43So good.
38:48I wanna go see her now.
38:50I wanna go spend time with her.
38:55My life is better for having her in it.
38:56Ah!
39:06It's so good!
39:10I needed that laugh.
39:18No food, no sun.
39:21This overwhelming urge to be with my family and friends.
39:24It's a feeling I really didn't think I was gonna have.
39:41I'm such a busy person in my normal life.
39:44And I really have neglected the human contact part of my life.
39:50Because I've been so busy working.
39:54You know, not seeing my friends and not seeing my family as much as I would like to.
39:59And just not, not fulfilling that little void in my life that I didn't really know that I had until I came out here.
40:07This place just makes you think, should I be with my family instead of being out here?
40:19It's time for me to stop being this person who is independent and doesn't need help and doesn't need people.
40:37Because I do need people.
40:40Because I do need people.
40:44I just didn't realise that I needed people.
40:46I'm just so used to being this strong, independent woman.
41:00And I got stuck in it, I think.
41:01You know, I didn't come out here to have an epiphany.
41:12I didn't come out here to reflect on my life, to make a change.
41:16I didn't feel like I needed to.
41:20But I've got it anyway.
41:21And I feel like rather than me sitting here on my own, I should be reconnecting with the people in my life.
41:34Oh, dearie me.
41:42But I've got to push through.
41:46And that's probably a good three, four days before I would.
41:51It's pretty cold.
42:07Pretty cold.
42:11Everything just feels like hard work at the minute.
42:14If I work myself into the ground, which is pretty easy to do, I don't have heaps of reserves.
42:18It's going to take a lot to, um, build back up.
42:30I can't believe that.
42:33Good looking day.
42:36Still has not been touched.
42:38Looks like it's a beautiful spot.
42:39It's the time of day that caught every fish on and have had every bite on.
42:54But you can do everything right and not have success.
43:03Well, on one level that's pretty disheartening.
43:08Seriously, like, I know I'm getting pretty skinny.
43:17I've lost more than, definitely more than 20, maybe 25 kilos in the last month and a bit.
43:26So I don't know if that is kind of classifying as starving.
43:36Maybe it is.
43:37Maybe it is.
43:39Might become quiet.
43:40Just...
43:41nashing.
43:48...
43:50Tripped on a root. I saw it.
44:08Silly. And not being careful enough when I'm tired.
44:19Well, that's plenty sore. But my right knee or the bottom of the quaddi and just tip of
44:41the right knee just took all the impact on them.
44:48Can't take anti-inflammatories. Don't have any ice.
44:55Hopefully that's not a deal breaker.
45:01There's something in my time here.
45:08It's the ultimate human endurance challenge.
45:23The battle is on to survive alone in the rugged Tasmanian wilderness with the winner taking
45:36home a prize with $250,000.
45:43Day 35.
46:08Day 35.
46:09Hello?
46:10Hello.
46:11It's Karla.
46:12I am officially tapping out.
46:17Hello?
46:29Hello, it's Carla.
46:31Carla?
46:32I am officially tapping out.
46:47I'm so ready to go.
46:56I can't wait to see my family.
46:58I can't wait to see my friends.
47:00And I can't wait to eat.
47:02I'm so hungry.
47:05And I can't wait to get back to my life.
47:11I keep saying that I want to find this inner warrior
47:14that pushes through when things get hard.
47:17That I need to learn to sit in the suck.
47:21I need to learn to deal with things
47:24when they're not enjoyable anymore.
47:26But you know what?
47:29I don't.
47:32I don't want to sit in the suck.
47:36I want to go and tell my family that I love them.
47:40Oh my lord.
47:47Hi.
47:51This place brings out emotions that you don't even know you have.
47:56Once the lack of food sort of kicked in.
47:58And I was liking energy.
48:00Lacking motivation.
48:07And just started to not feel like myself.
48:12And I didn't like that.
48:13I've been doing my own thing solo for so long.
48:24I thought that was going to be my strength out here.
48:27But I'm so happy that I've come to the realisation that
48:30I actually do need humans.
48:39I need to find the balance.
48:40I need to back off work a bit more.
48:43And spend that time with the amazing people I'm lucky enough to have in my life.
48:48I don't want to be alone anymore.
48:57Here or in my real life.
49:18I'm glad my knee is feeling better this morning.
49:38It's still feeling sore from where I tripped and fell last night.
49:42But it's not going to be a deal breaker at all.
49:46I'm not even close.
49:50I don't want to be the one who calls it.
49:53Completely trust the docs.
49:56That's their call to know when I'm physically done.
50:02But, you know, mentally and wellbeing, like emotionally,
50:06that's kind of on me.
50:07Because I know there's more I need to do.
50:13Today I reckon I'm going to have a crack at making some friction fire with a bow drill.
50:21I don't need it for fire.
50:25But this is a hobby of mine.
50:28If I get one out here, this will bring me joy.
50:32Bow string.
50:33Apparently the British soldiers, in their little survival kit, they have a tea bag.
50:43It's of zero survival purpose.
50:46But the mental boost it will give you in a survival situation to have a hot cup of tea.
50:53That's why it's there.
50:54That's why it's there.
50:56Well, that is cool.
51:00That is a very, very good looking fire bone.
51:06The good thing to do is you want as little friction as possible at the top of this.
51:10So, oil.
51:14From the pores of your nose are good.
51:17From your hair.
51:20Okay, time to send it.
51:22This is so exciting.
51:24All right, God.
51:26Please help this to work.
51:27Let's see how I go.
51:37All right.
51:39And I'm not doing heaps of downwards pressure at the moment.
51:42The goal is just rounding off the top of that spindle.
51:48It's all I'm trying to do.
51:50Just smooth it off.
51:54Starting to see some smoke.
51:57It's good.
51:59It's going to be great to see some black dust.
52:01It's just a little bit too tight.
52:08And persevering.
52:24This whole experience is kind of one big lesson in learning delayed gratification.
52:29You want to sleep well at night.
52:33You need to spend hours making a good shelter.
52:38You want to eat?
52:40You've got to experiment.
52:42Trial and error.
52:44A bit more pressure.
52:45A bit more speed.
52:47Effort it takes.
52:49The cost is higher.
52:51But the reward is great.
52:53Now it looks like we're getting success.
52:55There's a tiny little ember forming.
52:57So I've got an ember.
53:00I've got an ember.
53:03But the biggest exercise in delayed gratification is how long can you stay out here before reuniting with the people you love the most.
53:18Tuck it in.
53:20That joy that has been delayed will be all the sweeter.
53:27Especially knowing that I've given it up my all out here.
53:32And there we have it.
53:33Tasmanian friction fire.
53:34Bow drill.
53:35Lutra wiener style.
53:36Yelp yelty.
53:37Woo hoo.
53:38It took some doing.
53:39It made me work.
53:41How good is that?
53:44How good is that?
53:45Friction Fire, Bow Drill Lutra Wiener style, Yelp Yelty, woohoo, it took some doing, it
53:58made me work.
54:04How good is that? How good is that? So good. So good. A bit of a growing sense of confidence
54:19there, that I can do this. I can do this. I'm a dad, I'm a husband, a Christian and a family
54:33man. I'm a boy from the bush and I'm connected to the land. When hunger gnaws at me like a
54:39knife in my gut, will I throw in the towel and say I've had enough? No. Because I'm big
54:47and I'm strong and I'm mentally tough and I know in my heart that I've got enough to
54:55win this thing. You've got to believe me.
55:01See what you tell us. Oh wow. A spotting qual. Oh. That's my first little vibe of loneliness.
55:13I'm going home. You know, my body's just getting to the end of its limit. Nothing can defeat
55:21me because God is with me. It's the beginnings of acute gout in the left ankle. I'll tell you
55:27it's scary. Turns a man into a mouse. I'm sorry if I'm going to have to medically evacuate you.
