New GCSE results day app being trialled
Transcript
00:00Hello, my name is Amber Allett, and I'm a journalist specialising in education.
00:05The government is dragging GCSE results day into the 21st century this year with the trial of a new app.
00:11It's being tested by nearly 100,000 students this year, although there are eventually plans to roll it out nationwide.
00:18The app is called Education Record, and here are some of the things it will be able to help pupils in schools do.
00:25First of all, Education Record will allow GCSE candidates to receive their exam results virtually on results day.
00:32This means that they don't have to go into school and collect their results envelopes if they don't want to,
00:37although of course a lot of students do enjoy that experience.
00:41Initial reports suggest that the results on the app will be released slightly later in the morning,
00:46which means that students will be able to have that experience if they want it.
00:49The app also keeps a digital copy of their exam certificates to give them easy access.
00:55This means they could be passed along to universities, apprenticeships, and potentially even employers quite easily,
01:01without students having to sort through paperwork or hunt down key documents in the years to come.
01:07It may also have some benefits for schools, according to the government.
01:11They say once the app is available to all schools, it could save them up to £30 million each year.
01:16Head teachers who have piloted the app say that it also cuts back on bureaucratic work for school staff,
01:23freeing up valuable time.
