The 5K and 1 Mile fun runs return to Stanley Park on Saturday, May 24th, with support from Jamie Carragher and local charities.
Transcript
00:00The 11th annual run for the 97 is taking place later this month.
00:05The event was first held in 2015.
00:07During the pandemic, it was staged twice virtually.
00:10Last year's event marked the 10th year of this Community Legacy Fun Run in Stanley Park,
00:16attracting 1,500 participants who walked, jogged or ran.
00:20And it's good for everyone to get out, get a little sweat on, do a 5k.
00:235k is enough, isn't it? It's enough for me, anyway.
00:25Not for my wife, likes to run marathons, but for me, 5k is a good little run.
00:31And the time of the year that we do it, good weather.
00:35It normally comes out as well towards the end of the season.
00:37So, yeah, it should be a good event and we're hoping for probably maybe the biggest numbers that we've had.
00:43People know now about the history of Hillsborough, obviously, in the 97 and how special it is.
00:47So, to be able to put something on to remember them, to honour them as well and their families,
00:54it's so special.
00:56As you say, it's the 11th year now, gets bigger each year.
00:58We had nearly 1,500 last year.
00:59Hopefully, there'll be a lot more this year.
01:02The run for the 97 is one of the highlights in the calendar for fans supporting food banks.
01:10The similarities, I think we've always said that in terms of adversity,
01:15this city and people in this city always come together.
01:19The run is really important to me and I'm sure to many people in the city to keep the memory of the 97 going.
01:26But it's a message that we send out every year that this community will never forget what happened in 1989.
01:34And we're strongly, as hard as we can, pushing for the Hillsborough Law.
01:39And this helps keep the awareness raised to that.
01:42And so the small events will hopefully bring a big prize to this city which will be a Hillsborough Law.
01:49The community legacy fun run remembers the 97 football fans who lost their lives in the Hillsborough disaster.
01:56The event also remembers the families of the 97 and survivors who've tirelessly fought for justice
02:02with the utmost dignity and continue to do so through their campaign for a Hillsborough Law.
02:07This run for the 97, it's not just about the 97, it's about the people who suffered that day as well.
02:15It's about the survivors, some of them today are still suffering.
02:19It's about, but also it's about getting all people involved as much as they can because there's a lot of people suffering.
02:26You know, they have their issues, private issues as well.
02:30They go to the run for the 97, they make friends, they can talk to people.
02:35And I think that makes a hell of a difference.
02:37This year's run for the 97, a run to remember 5k and one mile fun run will take place on Saturday the 24th of May.
02:46People come that have never ran before, never done it before, but they want to do it because of what it's for.
02:51And I think that's amazing.
02:52So you'll see different types, you'll see people sprinting off and doing it in quick times.
02:56You'll see people that struggle but get through it because of how important it is.
