00:00Drivers this weekend is to negotiate seven extremely challenging corners,
00:04which, when all joined together, form the very beautiful but highly demanding
00:08Alton Park circuit at Cheshire.
00:11Old Al.
00:12One of the most tricky first corners in the business.
00:14It's three lines into this corner, but really only one way out.
00:18Cascades.
00:19One of the two big corners on the circuit.
00:21It's fast, and the camber changes a lot.
00:24Island hairpin.
00:25This thing's really hard work.
00:26You arrive going very fast, it's extremely tight, and worse still, uphill on the way out.
00:32Knickerbrook.
00:33This is a hateful, fiddly little corner, and it's at the bottom of a hill,
00:36so you get here going really fast as well.
00:38Expect at least one car to go straight on through.
00:42Doids.
00:42The other really big corner on the circuit.
00:45It's fast, and it's a double apex, so get this thing wrong,
00:47and at best, you're going to lose time.
00:49At worst, you're in the wall.
00:51Lodge.
00:51A great place to pass if you're brave under brakes.
00:54The exit here is trickier than it looks, because the car's pitch and yaw all over the place.
00:58Deer leap.
00:59Last one before the start-finish line, and obviously, completely blind.
01:03Tons of close racing in the production ranks particularly,
01:31but a lot of rough and tumble as well.
01:33Now, Thruxton a couple of weeks back, Roger Moen and Kate.
01:37Kate climbs across the top of Moen's car.
01:38How do you call it?
01:40Well, first of all, it was very spectacular, and I'm sure the audience has loved it,
01:43but it's not what I call good motor racing.
01:44But that, that chicane and Thruxton, is unacceptable.
01:49Kate got fined.
01:50He got two penalty points.
01:52Rightly so, in my opinion.
01:53I don't want to see that type of action spoiling good racers,
01:57particularly where it could lead to maybe a driver getting injured
01:59or people around the circuit getting injured.
02:01That's my ultimate concern.
02:02And so, cool it, just use your brains.
02:05That might be a contradiction of terms.
02:08Tom Borbant, only 17 years old,
02:10and he's getting bullied by a much more mature, one might say, competitor.
02:15And, in fact, I watched Carl Harder at Brands Hatch,
02:17and I saw a couple of incidents which I was not happy with.
02:20You know, go out and have fun, race closely,
02:23but just don't allow that degree of contact to become so aggressive.
02:27He says he won't do it again, and that.
02:31But he said to me, he said,
02:32he said, you should have just let me pass.
02:34And I said, I'm not going to let him pass.
02:36Gross.
02:37That's the way, Tom, no prisoners.
02:40Rounds five and six of the AA.com British Touring Car Championship
02:43from the Alton Park Circuit in the northwest of England.
02:47Stunning track.
02:48This is the island circuit, just under 2.4 miles long.
02:51And this man, the ice racing king, Ivan Muller,
02:54wheels in the air.
02:55Absolutely awesome in qualifying.
02:58Absolutely the man to beat.
03:04The problem here, we will struggle with break, I think, everybody.
03:08So I think it's very important to make a good start,
03:12to keep the leader, to have fresh air,
03:15to cool down as much we can the break,
03:17and maybe I will have the chance to stay on the front.
03:20One-upmanship within the team is massively important,
03:28and everyone pretends we're all being nice about it.
03:30But hey, I want to win badly, and I know those two do.
03:33So it's important to win races.
03:35So yeah, I'm going to take as many risks as I dare,
03:38and try and win.
03:39There's going to be a few issues in this race.
03:45We have a problem with the brakes staying consistent
03:49all the way through the race,
03:50because there's a lot of hairpins,
03:53a lot of stopping involved in the race around here.
03:56So there'll be a little bit of strategy played out,
03:59I think, tomorrow.
04:00And I think whoever's got the best brakes by the end of the race
04:02is going to be in good shape.
04:09It's just a race, you know, and I want to win.
04:11And if that means beating the Vauxhalls,
04:13that's what I'd like to do.
04:14It's not going to be easy.
04:15You know, the Vauxhalls are running very, very well,
04:17but the Lexus is coming strong.
04:19And every time I get in the car,
04:20it gets better and better and better.
04:30Good fun.
04:30And I'm loving every minute of it,
04:32chucking the car around,
04:34whapping it over the curbs
04:35and really having a good laugh.
04:36And I think the cars look good and sound good,
04:38and hopefully they're good for the spectators.

04:43Stunning last qualifier.
04:45I'm not quite sure where that one came from.
04:46That was a lot quicker than anything I've done before.
04:49You know, that was just pushing really hard on new tyres.
04:51So, you know, it puts us in the right place for the race.
04:53And again, it's another two points,
04:54closing up on James Kaye,
04:56but that was hard work.
04:58Down.
05:00Up.
05:02Let's do one.
05:03We're going to do it.
05:03I had a passing in the chicane,
05:05so that slowed me down a little bit,
05:06but I really thought that was pull position,
05:08but it's still in the front row,
05:10so I still think it's a good chance.
05:12Now, we've seen the track corner by corner.
05:15Let's have a look at it fully assembled
05:16on a flying lap on board Dan Eves' car,
05:19talked around by John Watson.
05:22Dan Eves had lots of had pull position.
05:25Not to be this time,
05:26but let's do a lap off the Ilton Park circuit.
05:28Old hole corner,
05:29the first corner you approach after the start finish line.
05:3190 miles an hour, fourth gear.
05:33Let the car run out to the left
05:34and cut back to the right,
05:36down through Denton's,
05:37and then down the gears into Cascades.
05:40Funny camper here.
05:41You've got to go in one way.
05:43You come out over the top of the hill.
05:44You can see the car rolling over to the right,
05:47then accelerating up to the slowest corner on the circuit.
05:49That's Island Heaven Bend.
05:51Great place to try an overtaking maneuver,
05:53but of course, very easy to defend.
05:5535 miles an hour in first gear.
05:58Traction always a problem
05:59as you climb up the hill,
06:01reach the crest of the hill,
06:03then you dive down,
06:04and by the time you just see the circuit,
06:07it's time to be back on the brakes
06:08with a notorious chicane,
06:10the scene of so many incidents.
06:12Single car in, through it, and out.
06:15As you come out through Knickerbrook,
06:17then the climb up Clay Hill
06:18to the quickest part of the circuit
06:21as you come up to Druid.
06:22The car gets a little bit light in the suspensions,
06:24runs out to the right-hand side.
06:26125 miles an hour, sixth gear,
06:28then on the brakes, down two gears,
06:30early apex, float the car right,
06:32bring it back in again,
06:34over the crest, the car gets light,
06:36settles again, up the gears,
06:38come up to the final corner,
06:39large again,
06:40somewhere you'll see people
06:41diving down the inside,
06:42trying to take a position.
06:4460 miles an hour in third gear.
06:46Again, the car rises on the suspension,
06:48compression,
06:49then the final rise over dearly
06:50as you come across the start-finish line.
06:55Now, coming into today's round,
06:57the championship points
06:58still have Jason Pato on top.
06:59Ivan Muller might have bagged
07:00two pole positions,
07:02but it's not enough to see him
07:03a clear leader yet
07:04in the touring car class.
07:06Similarly, Simon Harrison,
07:07pole man twice,
07:08but he too in the production class,
07:10is still in second position
07:11behind the ever-consistent James K.
07:14Well, the idea of combining
07:16the sprint race for the tourers
07:17and the production cars
07:18worked at Thruxton,
07:19so it's here to stay.
07:20Now, just a reminder
07:21of how it works.
07:23When the lights go to green,
07:25these touring cars here
07:26will set up first.
07:27They are on a 16-lap race.
07:29Then, precisely 10 seconds later,
07:31and we will be counting,
07:32the production cars
07:33then will take off.
07:34Now, that means that
07:35when everybody gets rolling,
07:36the two Peugeots there

07:38always at the sharp end

07:40effectively we will be leading.

13:41of this touring car field.

13:45Those two Vauxhall's
13:46just sliding through
13:47he's got plenty of
13:48experience but I think
13:49he's a little bit
13:49short of horsepower.
13:50I think there's a little
13:50bit more than horsepower
13:51that's short at the
13:52minute for the Peugeot
13:53as the Vauxhall's
13:54clearly the class
13:54of the field.
