00:00Popular with the crowd too. Today's is a typically big one. Here to see the cars
00:05and drivers whose spectacular racing has made the British Touring Car
00:09Championship a tremendous attraction. Because Alton Park is a real challenge,
00:14all 1.6 miles of it. 18 races down, 8 to go in the championship and signs of a
00:21change at the front as all the teams flex their muscles for a major push for
00:25points to improve their positions. The new look is David Leslie and his Honda.
00:31Team MSD's development work has put Leslie in pole position and David's
00:36reveling in the changes which have made his Honda a winner. It's a lot of things
00:40one is suspension I think is the main thing, the other is the engine. We won
00:44our first race at Silverstone having just got this new engine and everyone's
00:48latched on to the fact that it is the thing that's making the difference and I
00:52think it's one of a number of things but not that on its own. But what about
00:56Renault and Alamenius? Superstars last year but struggling in 1996.
01:01For our lucky as everybody knows we had some problems with the engine so we
01:06didn't get as much testing time as we hoped we would so we were struggling a
01:11little bit but here at the Laguna is probably the best car on the end so that's why it's quick.
01:16Well we'll see but Volvo are under pressure too. Sweden's Ricard Rydell won brilliantly at
01:23Knock Hill but he needs to do just as well here at Dautum Park to improve his chances.
01:28We were hoping for two pole positions here to get some more points from Biela's lead. He's now 58 points ahead but
01:36if we have two good races maybe we can do something good. I think it's a lot more competitive this year. We're going a lot quicker than we did last year even though it's the same car, same regulations.
01:44We've done a lot of development on the car and the team's been working really good but so is everyone else and we really need to be there all the time which maybe we lost out a bit in the middle of the year and we've been competitive in the last few races but you've got to be there from the start of the year till the end of the year.
02:03And that's exactly where Germany's Frank Biela has been in his all-conquering Audi A4 even if he sounds cautious about today.
02:10I hope that I can finish in the first race because fifth position on the grid is a bit dangerous in the first few corners and the second race with pole position looks a lot better of course but winning a race is always very difficult but of course I tried very hard to do it.
02:29So there's a brave sight, 19 of the world's best touring cars and drivers. Front row, David Leslie's Honda in its third pole position with Menuh's Renault Laguna.
02:39James K's Honda's next, his best grid mate yet. Frank Biela is fifth ahead of Hoy's Renault, Winkelhock's BMW and Thompson's Vauxhall Vectra.
02:48Kelvin Bird, Volvo, back at the scene of his round nine crash. Then Bidcliffe's Audi wants his Peugeot.
02:551995 champion John Cleland is down at 14th, followed by Harvey's Peugeot, Robertson's Mondeo and then the hard-trying privateers.
03:05Leslie on the left, Menuh on the right. And James K has bogged down in his Honda. Now, down towards us, Menuh is leading in the yellow Renault.
03:15A brilliant start by Biela, he's up from fifth to second into Old Hall. Leslie is third. Now, down the avenue and they're off.
03:23It's Bidcliffe and Radisic in the Ford Mondeo. Bidcliffe rejoins. Here are the leaders. Into Cascades. It's Miela in second place.
03:32Leslie is third. Behind him in the white sonder. Then it's Winkelhock in fourth position. Now, out of Foster's. That's a 60 mile an hour bend.
03:41Up towards Clay Hill. And Watts is in trouble. My goodness, he's lost it. Off goes Thompson. Off goes Revalia with him.
03:49Wow! But all three of them seem to be getting back. And there's Biela, second. Leslie, third in the Honda. Going well.
03:58And Alarmenu leads into Lodge Corner. Almost at the end of the lap. Then it's Biela, Leslie, Winkelhock in the BMW.
04:07Down into Deerleaf. Out of it. Through the left-hander to complete the first lap. And it's Renault, Audi, Honda, BMW. First, second, third, fourth.
04:23The rest goes streaming through. There's Will Hoy in his Renault. And that is Kay. Kay trying to recover in the Honda Accord.
04:34Now, here's a replay. We're with Roberto Revalia. That's Thompson ahead of us. And round the outside goes Watts.
04:41That looks like a demon move. Indeed, it was too much of a demon move. She's hit Thompson. And they accelerate away.
04:48Now, Watts turns into the right-hander. Onto the grass goes Thompson. Out of control goes Watts. He's lost it. Hits the front of the Vauxhall Vectra.
04:59Revalia jinxed right onto the grass. Rejoins. But he's losing places. There go Cleland, Harvey and Kelvin Byrne. All past.
05:09And to nobody's great surprise, Patrick Watts is out of the race. Here are the leaders. Or rather, second and third.
05:15Beeler. Tuck back tight behind him is David Leslie in the Honda. My goodness, that Honda's flying these days.
05:22Here's the leader. Down to Lodge. Now, let's look back a bit. That's Winklehock. Rydell on the left in the big Volvo.
05:30Behind him is Will Hoy. So, both the Renaults are in the top six.
05:35Through to the end of the lap.
05:37Now, here's Alan Menuh. He's won twice this year.
05:40But he's had a job keeping ahead of the Audi up to here.
05:43But he's got clear air between himself and Frank Beeler.
05:46Now, we're with Rydell in fifth position. But he needs to do a lot better than that.
05:51Ideally, he's got to get ahead of Frank Beeler. He's in second place. And that is Winklehock ahead.
05:58Down the avenue. Cascades into Foster's the right-hander. And he's challenging. He's pushing very hard indeed.
06:05Winklehock drifts right. Rydell goes through up into fourth position. And behind Winklehock now it's Will Hoy.
06:13And here is Menuh. He's over a second ahead of Beeler and Leslie. There's the battle for fourth.
06:18Rydell. Winklehock. Hoy. Volvo. BMW. Renault. John Clelland is coming up in the Vauxhall Vectra.
06:27Look back a bit. One, two, three, four cars. That is Clelland. And out from behind Harvey comes Kelvin Burt.
06:36Kelvin Burt in the Volvo dives through. We're with Harvey now, the 1992 champion.
06:41Nice bit of driving by Kelvin. It's his first race at Alton since that terrific crash at the avenue.
06:47And he's approaching the avenue now. So at the end of the lap. Oh, and at the end of that it's Binkliffe.
06:56John Binkliffe in the Audi. This is an unusual sight. And Audi in the pits. Oh, and out of the race.
07:02John Binkliffe's obviously incurred some damage which has put him out. And so has Paul Radisic getting out of the Ford Mondeo.
07:13His season seems to be getting worse and worse. And that's James Thompson coming in in the Vectra. So all three of them seem to be out.
07:21I was just on the inside going into turn one and somebody touched Binkliffe and he just came straight across and pit me.
07:30So I was just on the inside and nothing I could do about it.
07:33We went into the first corner and made a good start. Came round for two cars. And I think it was Kelvin's Volvo spun me round.
07:42I spun round and as soon as I came round I was facing the opposite way to the track and I think I got hit by probably a Ford I think. I'm not sure.
07:48So obviously it's finished the race for us. Can they fix it for the next race?
07:51I really don't know. It's only been a split second until we've just got in a pit. So we'll have to see.
07:57So John Binkliffe's race is over and it looks as though Thompson's is too. They're pushing him back.
08:02Oh, but he's staying. Oh, he's rejoining. James Thompson rejoining in the Vauxhall Vectra.
08:07Don't know why. He's well down. And here's the battle for four. Rydell in the Volvo.
08:12Winklehock can do nothing about the Volvo any more than Hoy can do anything about Winklehock or Clelland can do anything about Hoy.
08:23Four, five, six and seven absolutely together up Clay Hill. Four different makes. There's absolutely nothing in it.
08:30Turn into Druids. Now the run down to Lodge. That's about 130 miles an hour in these two litre cars.
08:37And we're with Roberto Revalia now. The man who won at Silverstone.
08:42He's having a go at Harvey's Peugeot in front of him.
08:46Ex-champion Tim Harvey and Roberto Revalia dives through on the inside at Lodge.
08:53Thank you very much.
08:55Away they go. Rydell, Winklehock and Hoy.
08:58We can see how difficult it is to pass. These cars, you see there is a Volvo, there's a BMW, there's a Renault.
09:12They've got virtually the same power. They've got the same handling characteristics.
09:16They've got the same braking capability. They've got the same sort of aerodynamic drag.
09:21They've all got top drivers. So the driver has got to try and force the man in front of him to make a mistake.
09:29And they're all very experienced indeed. So unless somebody does make a mistake, it looks as though they're going to stay in these positions.
09:37We'll see as they turn into Lodge.
09:39There is Rydell, Winklehock, Hoy, number four. And behind him the Vectra.
09:48Another lap completed. Menu leads. He's got no problems with his engine here. Here's the battle for four.
09:54Rydell, Winklehock, Hoy and Cleland, number one. Last year's champion John Cleland in the new Vauxhall Vectra.
10:01And I thought that Hoy has got ahead of Winklehock. Will Hoy in the Renault has got ahead of Winklehock's BMW.
10:11Now, Hoy is the 1991 champion. Winklehock is the 1993 champion. John Cleland behind them is the 1995 champion.
10:21And here's the race leader, number two, Alam Menuh. Seven times a winner last year. Second in the championship last year.
10:29He's pulling away from Biela's Audi. Number 45 is Frank Biela, the championship leader. Four-wheel drive Audi.
10:38He's on 12 points at the present moment. And even more importantly for him, he's ahead of Ricard Rydell, who is second in the championship.
10:47That's Biela. Steady as a rock. Down the avenue. Into Cascades again. Second place from fifth on the grid.
11:02Where with Revalia, he's ninth. He's got Kelvin Burt's Volvo ahead of him.
11:09So this is going to be interesting. Front-wheel drive Volvo against rear-wheel drive BMW.
11:14The multiple champion Roberto Revalia at the wheel. And into the pits comes Tim Harvey.
11:18Well, he's won for Ford. He's won for BMW. He's won for Renault. He's won for Volvo. He's not going to win for Peugeot here today.
11:27But it looks as though they're going to try and get him back in the race. We'll just have to wait and see.
11:37Tim, what's happened this time?
11:45This time?
11:47I had a fabulous first lap. Passed a lot of people, got up to eighth place. But there was a bad vibration from the right front.
11:54And eventually I couldn't turn left and it's a drive shaft that's broken or fouling or worn away or something.
12:01So, unfortunately, another retirement when points looked on the cards.
12:05And I've said that to you before, but we'll see.
12:10Well, Tim's out of the points, but here are three who are very much in them.
12:15Although how many they'll get remains to be seen.
12:19Will Hoy trying to scramble past Rydell's Volvo.
12:22Wickelhock keeping them both in sight. Fourth, fifth and sixth.
12:26And Hoy is looking very aggressive as they turn into Lodge.
12:30Right up alongside the Volvo. Down into Deerleaf.
12:32Van goes the mirror. Into the left-hander. Now, this is going to help Hoy because he's on the inside as they approach the right-hander at Old Hall.
12:42He's got the right line. And sure enough, Will Hoy passes the Volvo. Goes up into fourth place. So, he's made two places. Here's a replay.
12:50It all began here at Lodge. Will Hoy gets on the inside of the Volvo. And from then on, it was going to be very difficult indeed for Rydell.
12:58But my goodness, it was a close thing for Will Hoy. Off goes his mirror.
13:03And as they dive into Deerleaf and start another lap with Hoy about to make a place, Thompson is in the pits.
13:10I hit Patrick. I didn't mean to do it. I got into Nickerbrook. Just a brake just to let him go in front of me. And I just obviously didn't break enough and just hit the front of the car, which was bad for him but wasn't bad for me.
13:27But then Patrick kept it sideways. And as I was going past him, he went in to me. So, I suppose, at the end of the day, um, no, it's a nice thing.
13:37Six of one after the other, you mean?
13:39Well, it was my fault in the first place. But, er, then obviously I got caught on the way past, so, yeah.
13:44Now, you've been out again to try, but it's obviously not, er...
13:47Yeah, I just went out just to, just to check everything was okay and just do a bit of running, get a bit of knowledge.
13:53But it's actually a bit later on today. So, er, hopefully a bit higher up on the grid and hopefully I'll keep out of trouble this time.
14:02Honest James Thompson. He's not trying to blame anybody else.
14:05But, er, as he walks away, there's no quarter in that battle for fifth position.
14:10And Winklehock, in the white BMW, is pushing Rydell's Volvo very hard indeed.
14:16John Cleland is right behind them. So, it's Volvo, BMW and Vauxhall down to Old Hall corner.
14:25Now, they turn out of this and they build up to about 130 miles an hour down the avenue.
14:31In two litre touring cars. Amazing. Cascades. From Cascades to Fosters. That's the slowest corner on the track. It's about 60 miles an hour.
14:41Now, up Clay Hill and Bieler is with Menuh. Now, these are the leaders. Menuh leading in the Renault and Frank Bieler is pushing. He isn't giving up.
14:56He's won six times already this year. One of those victories was with the increased weight penalty of an extra 30 kilograms.
15:05So, you can see that the Audi is really flying here. We're with Bieler now down the avenue.
15:11Coming up for the Cascades and you can see Alan Menuh's two litre Renault Laguna ahead.
15:16Turn left, turn right. This is the short course at Ulta, not the long one. Climb up Clay Hill.
15:22Looking at Frank Bieler. The man who looks almost certain to be the champion of 1996. Climbing up Clay Hill.
15:30This is 135 miles an hour before the turn in at right at Druids. But first the left-hander. This is Druids.
15:38And the leaders are catching the privateers. Lee Brooks and Matthew Neal. We'll see them in a minute. I think, yeah, there they are.
15:45Well, first of all, Brooks, then Matthew Neal. Now they're coming up to the start of the last lap.
15:52And lapping these tail-enders could change the whole race. If Menuh doesn't get past cleanly, Bieler could take his opportunity and nip past into first place for yet another win.
16:03But not if Alan Menuh can stop it. Let's see. Into Old Hall. And Matthew Neal is touring. Something's happened to the Ford Mondeo.
16:13So that's one they haven't got to worry about. Or rather Alan Menuh hasn't got to worry about. That's Lee Brooks ahead as they come down to Foster's.
16:21And now Bieler really is pushing. Look, he's coming up alongside Alan Menuh. And remember, this is the last lap. They're absolutely together as they go up Clay Hill.
16:31And Lee Brooks moves over. Well done, Lee. Let's improve. That's a nice bit of driving.
16:36Now, Alan Menuh, if he drives sensibly, and he will with all his experience, ought to be able to stay in front.
16:45He can just position his car to make it almost impossible for Frank Bieler to get by.
16:51Coming up to the last corner but one. Lodge, the right-hander. Into D'Alique for the last time.
16:57Coming up to the exit from D'Alique. And that is the finish point. And Alan Menuh wins for Renault.
17:05Bieler is second. Menuh wins its fourth 1996 race by three tenths of a second. But Frank Bieler has a new lap record.
17:13And behind them a terrific Stratway with Rebalia now. Bert is up there. And John Cleland is ahead of both of them.
17:19This is the battle for seventh position. Look how close it is. Over the line they go three tenths of a second separate them.
17:28Terrific.
17:31Fifteen valuable points for Alan Menuh show his Renault Laguna's back on the pace by beating Frank Bieler's dominant Audi with Leslie's Honda third.
17:41Six different makes in the top seven, but Bieler is even stronger in the championship.
17:46Yes!
17:49Well done, Alain.
17:51It was tough.
17:52Was it?
17:53Very tough. The last race when Frank was quicker.
17:56And he made my life very hard.
17:59The car was just good enough to stay in front, so.
18:03You kept him at bay, but I had to work hard.
18:07I had to work very hard.
18:09I just tried to push him into a mistake, you know.
18:11For me it was too dangerous to try to overtake, because he cannot lose something just to win, let's say, and I can still lose a championship if I'm unlucky.
18:20We all had to overtake some cars from behind, and so we had to slow down a little bit, and then the exit of the hairpin, he was slower than I was.
18:28So I just tried to push him as hard as I could, and try to get him into the problem.
18:36Nearly worked in the last lap, but okay, second place is great for me.
18:40So now for race two, but if the non-Audi drivers had a problem before, they've got an even bigger one now.
18:47Frank Bieler is in pole position this time.
18:50Alongside Frank, the front-wheel drive Honda Accord of David Leslie.
18:54Third in race one, but with Bieler ahead on the grid, David needs a super start.
18:59Row two, Menuh's Renault, Rydell's Volvo.
19:03Then BMW and Vauxhall, Winklehawk and Thompson.
19:07Hoy is seventh, James Kaye eighth.
19:10John Cleland alone on row five, Watts is a non-starter.
19:14Row six, BMW and Audi, Revalia and Bidcliffe.
19:18Burt's Volvo thirteenth, Robertson Ford fourteenth.
19:21Mondeo for Radisic, Peugeot for Harvey.
19:24The privateer's next, and now it's time for Blastoff.
19:29Everybody gets away well this time down to Old Hall.
19:38It's Bieler leading with four-wheel drive grip.
19:41Leslie's second, Menuh is third in the Renault.
19:44And a Volvo on the grass, it's Rydell.
19:47Hoy's gone past, there's Revalia and Cleland.
19:51Rydell's lost three places, he's down to ninth position and that is bad, bad news for him.
19:56Don't worry.
19:58Out of posters, Bieler leads, even stronger in the championship with Rydell slipping back.
20:04Leslie's second in the Honda, Menuh third in the Renault, climb Clay Hill, up to Druids, here they come.
20:10Winklehock is fourth in the white BMW, number 22.
20:17Thompson is fifth in the Vauxhall.
20:19Hoy is sixth, down to Lodge.
20:22It's a writhing snake of cars, brake hard.
20:27And Bert is doing it again.
20:29Through on the inside, past James Kaye this time, down into Deerle.
20:34One lap completed.
20:37Here's Bieler.
20:39There's Leslie.
20:41And the rest on the round-on hall corner, down the avenue again.
20:46And into the pits comes Tim Harvey.
20:51No finish for Watts or Harvey this time.
20:55Or is it?
20:58They seem to be changing the rear wheel on the Peugeot.
21:01They are changing the rear wheel on the Peugeot.
21:03Maybe Tim Harvey's going out again.
21:08Now let's see what happens.
21:10That's Richard Kaye ahead of us.
21:12Tim Harvey on the left.
21:14Harvey turns in.
21:16Pits Kaye's Cavalier.
21:17Off he goes.
21:19And here are the leaders at Druids.
21:22Bieler, Leslie and Menuh virtually as one.
21:26Turn in.
21:27Up to 130 miles an hour with Menuh and now.
21:30That's Leslie ahead of us in the white Honda.
21:32He moves to the left.
21:34And Menuh is going to try and go through on the inside.
21:37Is he going to succeed?
21:38He's got the inside line at Deerle.
21:40But Leslie stays ahead.
21:45And here they come.
21:46Completing the lap.
21:47Yes, Leslie is still in second position.
21:49He's held that place.
21:51Turns into Old Hall.
21:53Ahead in the Honda Accord.
21:55Down the avenue again.
21:57Down the Cascades.
21:58It's good to see David Leslie not being pushed off for a change.
22:02That's what normally happens to him in a race.
22:05Not here though.
22:06Foster's the right-hander.
22:08Climb up Clay Hill.
22:10Audi leads.
22:12Honda second.
22:13Renault third.
22:14BMW is in fourth position.
22:17Leslie moves across.
22:18Protects his line.
22:19Into Druid again.
22:20Vila, Leslie, Menuh.
22:22And they're pulling away from Joachim Winklehock.
22:25The 1993 champion in his BMW as they go down to Lodge.
22:28Looking good for Frank Vila.
22:31Up front.
22:32Clear track ahead of him.
22:34Through to complete another lap.
22:37That's John Wickham, the Audi team manager.
22:41Up goes the board.
22:4223 laps to go.
22:4323 laps to go.
22:48There's Thompson and Hoy.
22:50Now, John Cleland and Richard Rydell in the Volvo.
22:55Rydell is 13 points down on Frank Vila now in this race.
22:59Forward.
23:00The Kay brothers do not like Old Hall.
23:02That's Richard Kay this time.
23:05But up from Foster now.
23:07We're with Cleland, Rydell and Bindcliffe.
23:10We're with Rydell.
23:11Now, in car.
23:12He's in ninth position.
23:13That's John Cleland ahead.
23:15135 miles an hour up Clay Hill.
23:18Into Druids.
23:19Vauxhall, Volvo, Audi.
23:24Richard Rydell is pushing John Cleland very hard indeed.
23:28Now, Richard won here in May.
23:31He was first at Nock Hill.
23:33And he's really attacking.
23:35Right up with John Cleland.
23:36And he hits the Vauxhall Vectra.
23:38Runs wide.
23:39Bindcliffe is going through on the inside.
23:40And Rydell is out.
23:44Slows right.
23:45Oh, no wonder.
23:46Look at his left.
23:47Look at his left front wheel.
23:48He's broken a trap rod, I should think, from the way it's turned in.
23:52But whatever, there's going to be no points for Richard Rydell here today.
23:57He's out of the race.
23:58No doubt about that at all.
24:02Well, you can't blame him for trying hard, but it all went wrong for Richard.
24:10And a very unhappy Swede walks out.
24:15At the start of the race, I was on the outside and lost the place.
24:18And Will Hoy just banged me off the track.
24:22He did it in the first race as well.
24:23I didn't say anything, but just over the limit.
24:25Two times he's had me off today.
24:26And it's not very nice at all.
24:28And then at the end, I tried to pass John Kellan.
24:31We got together and my car stopped.
24:34I got a problem with the front wheel.
24:36He certainly did have a problem with the front wheel.
24:39Now, there is Richard Rydell left.
24:41The left of the yellow and white box hall.
24:45Revalia sprints up alongside the Volvo.
24:48They turn in and through goes Will Hoy.
24:52Will Hoy hits Rydell.
24:53That was what he was complaining about.
24:55Revalia goes past.
24:56Frank Bieler is the fastest man on the track.
24:59He's staying ahead.
25:00He's just put up a new fastest lap in this race.
25:03But it's not as quick as his lap record from race one.
25:07And he's getting no rest at all from Damon Leslie,
25:10from Alarmenu and from Winklehock as they go through.
25:13Out of Deerleaf.
25:14And that is the watch it chaps flag for unruly driving.
25:21Number eight is Bert.
25:2244 is Bintliff.
25:23And Bintliff goes off on the exit from Lodge Corner.
25:30Past he goes.
25:31In goes the board.
25:32He's had his warning.
25:34And Hoy walks in.
25:35He's out of the race.
25:36That'll please Richard Rydell, I should think.
25:39Will Hoy, the Renault driver, once again retires.
25:42He's not having a good season.
25:46And at the end of the lap, Frank Bieler is stretching his lead.
25:49Leslie is still second.
25:50Menuh is still third.
25:51Winklehock is still fourth.
25:54There they go.
25:55That's Jerkin Winklehock.
25:56Number 22 in the rear wheel drive BMW.
26:01Out of Old Hall.
26:02Down the avenue again.
26:04We're with Roberto Revalia now.
26:06Sixth position.
26:07He's chasing James Thompson's Vauxhall Vectra.
26:10Now, 21 Revalia comes from Venice.
26:14He's Italian.
26:15He's the ex-world champion.
26:17He's been the European champion.
26:19He's been the Italian champion.
26:21He's been the German champion.
26:23He's done it all.
26:24And now he needs to get that fifth position away from James Thompson.
26:28Two more 1996 winners, incidentally.
26:31So all the top six in the race at the present moment have won a race this year in the championship.
26:38Back again with Revalia.
26:40He's old enough to be James Thompson's father.
26:47Well, almost.
26:48There's about 20 years in it between the two of them.
26:51End of the lap.
26:52Thompson fifth.
26:53Revalia sixth.
26:54Everybody's watching.
26:56Everybody's checking.
26:57Down to Old Hall.
26:59Revalia's getting a bit agitated.
27:02It's no use making rude signs, Roberto.
27:09He's not going to move over.
27:10Why should he?
27:11He's in front.
27:12He's got the racing line.
27:13It's your job to get past.
27:15So, Foster's 60 miles an hour.
27:18Back again with Revalia.
27:21Young James Thompson driving an immaculate race.
27:24This is the new Vauxhall Vectra.
27:27They're getting it right.
27:29Don't forget the Cavalier had years of development.
27:33This is Druids.
27:3490 miles an hour.
27:36Back again with Revalia.
27:38Down to Lodge.
27:39Building up to 130 miles an hour.
27:41Vauxhall Vectra versus BMW.
27:44Front-wheel drive versus rear-wheel drive.
27:46Here's the leader, Frank Bieler.
27:48He's starting his last lap.
27:50Leslie behind.
27:52Menuh is third.
27:53Wheatle Hock is fourth.
27:54It looks as though win number seven is coming up for Frank Bieler.
27:58And his second win with the 30-kilogram penalty.
28:01As Revalia pushes again.
28:03He's pushing, pushing, pushing.
28:06Trying to force James Thompson into a mistake as they come down the avenue.
28:12Round Cascades.
28:15Back off for Foster's.
28:1760 miles an hour from 130.
28:19And up on two wheels goes Thompson.
28:22That is Revalia's opportunity.
28:24And he takes it.
28:25Does he?
28:26Thompson's holding it back.
28:27No, he's not.
28:28Revalia goes through.
28:30He's up into fifth position.
28:32Adjust the mirror.
28:33And he's got it made.
28:35That's four points.
28:37And Bieler wins.
28:38Leslie second.
28:39Menuh third.
28:40Weakle Hock is fourth.
28:41Frank Bieler may only have won by a second, but he was very much in charge all the way.
28:50Just calmly resisting non-stop pressure from Leslie's Honda and Menuh's Renault.
28:55But it was a good race for Alan Menuh, seemingly with his past engine problems overcome.
29:00Yeah, it was a perfect result.
29:02At first, it was quite a hard race.
29:04For me, the second race was more difficult because the car was sliding a lot more than this morning.
29:12I don't know why.
29:13Probably the circuit was a bit dirty.
29:14It was quite hard, but it was okay.
29:16One win, that's good.
29:17I think Rydell didn't finish or didn't finish in a good position.
29:20So that's good for us for the championship.
29:22So it's up on the podium again.
29:27Another laurel wreath for Frank Bieler, and he certainly deserved it.
29:34Bieler is a well-deserved and well-won 80 points ahead of Rydell in the championship now.
29:39And with only 90 points left to be won from the last five races, he's virtually unbeatable.
29:44But it's still close for second between Rydell and Menuh.
29:48But the manufacturer's championship is far from settled.
29:52In fact, BMW can still beat Audi.
29:55With 60,000 pounds to be shared, the privatiness battle for the Total Cup is really close.
30:01Matthew Neill beats Lee Brooks at Alton.
30:04But number 23, Richard Kaye in his Vauxhall Cavalier is the danger man.
30:08He's only six points behind Brooks, and he needs to win.
30:12In two weeks' time at Truxton, it's another battle.
30:16But meantime, chaps, let's waste some more champagne.
30:19It's been a great day.
30:20.
30:21.
30:22.
30:23.
30:24.
30:25.
30:26.
30:27.
30:28.
30:29.
30:30.
