00:00Kobo Arena where we have two what we think will be very exciting middleweight bouts lined up for you.
00:05There are about 6,000 fans here at Kobo and they're here primarily to see their hometown hero Thomas Hearns
00:12who hasn't fought here in two and a half years. His last outing here in Detroit. He defeated Luigi Benquillo.
00:17They love him in Detroit. They're glad to have him at home defending his NABF middleweight crown against Doug DeWitt.
00:23And the card will open with a guy who feels he's been overlooked and sidetracked and sidelined.
00:27That's James Kinchin. He's ranked number one by all of the world bodies in the middleweight division
00:32hoping to get his fight at Hagler but he's had to wait and he has to fight.
00:36So tonight he's fighting Iran Barkley and many people think he is definitely risking his number one rating
00:41against one of the hardest punchers in the division. Let's take a closer look at Kinchin and Barkley.
00:48He is the standard by which all other middleweights are measured.
00:52Marvelous Marvin Hagler. He is the undisputed champion.
00:55He's also the target of every middleweight fighting today. They want his crown.
01:01Hagler is a true champion. Hagler has made lots of money.
01:08Give the next guy a chance that's in line.
01:11I mean it's like being at the end of the line for lunch.
01:15And you finally get up there and then somebody else runs up in front of you.
01:18Two or three guys runs up in front of you.
01:20And hey, you really got the hungries, man. And you want to eat. And that's the way it is in me.
01:26Instead of a showdown with a marvelous one, Kinchin will be risking his ranking and his chance at the title against Iran Barkley.
01:33I have watched Hagler, and he reminds me of me. Dedicated, mean, and unstoppable.
01:44I took on the best. I beat the best. And now I'm putting myself into the best.
01:50It's no stopping me.
01:54Iran Barkley's nickname is The Blade. In the ring, he's more like a sledgehammer.
01:59He has won his last ten fights in a row, eight of them by knockout.
02:02And he knows Kinchin is frustrated that he's not fighting Hagler.
02:06In fact, Kinchin is having trouble focusing on this fight.
02:10I should be cautioned in every fight that I fight because I'm not fighting for the title.
02:16It's hard to get up to fight every fight. You can't get up to 100% to fight every fight.
02:23As of Barkley, it's not like me going in and fighting a Hagler, which I can pop right up.
02:29But I'm going to have to go ahead and fight a big, strong, dangerous guy that's coming in after my ranking.
02:36I'm in a situation now that it's all loose.
02:40I've got to keep fighting harder and harder and harder and more so, you know, to keep my spot where I am.
02:46That was the number one contender.
02:48The only setback in Kinchin's career came at the hands of the late James Shuler.
02:53Another loss at this time might mean he'll never get the chance to fight Hagler.
02:57However, Kinchin believes he's waited too long already.
03:02Nobody ever wanted to give me a title shot.
03:06If they feel that I can't fight, let me in and beat me up and get me out of the way and shut my mouth.
03:11I'm not going to box him.
03:14I'm not going to play with him.
03:17I'm going in there to take his head off.
03:21And I'm going to beat him.
03:23I'm going to beat him bad.
03:24Whatever he wants to do, I'm going to be there for him.
03:29And then he won't be the same guy after I finish with him.
03:34A confident-sounding Iran Barkley.
03:36And joining me here at ringside on Showtime Boxing, my colleague at CBS Sports, Gil Clancy.
03:41And Gil, Barkley seems very confident.
03:43He feels that he can beat Kinchin.
03:45And what an opportunity it is for him.
03:47And we all know he's dangerous, even though he hasn't had the same quality of action in the ring as Kinchin has.
03:53Well, Tim, I like hungry fighters and I like busy fighters.
03:56Barkley is both.
03:57The key to this fight may be the inactivity of Kinchin.
03:59He's only had one fight in the past 15 months.
04:02That ring rush better not be there.
04:03The other thing I wonder about Kinchin, even though, as we pointed out, he's had the tougher fights against the more experienced fighters in his career.
04:10He has to go in here saying, my goodness, here's this guy coming out of nowhere, getting a shot, a fight I don't really need or want, except I've got to fight.
04:17He'd rather be fighting Hagler.
04:19I wonder if he can handle this psychologically.
04:21Well, Tim, you know, you have to give James Kinchin credit.
04:23Most guys now, when they get rated number one, they put themselves in mothballs.
04:27And that hurts them.
04:28They're out a year or whatever.
04:29Kinchin was out a year because of managerial problems.
04:32I give him credit for taking a shot like this.
04:35Well, this is definitely a tough fight for James Kinchin, a great opportunity for Iran Barkley.
04:39And as you pointed out, for Kinchin, he's almost in a no-win situation here.
04:43If he wins, he hasn't really advanced any farther.
04:46He's still number one.
04:47If he loses to this guy, Iran Barkley, all of a sudden his rating is gone.
04:51Here comes the number four-ranked IBF, International Boxing Federation ranking, Iran Barkley from the Bronx, New York.
04:59And a real tough guy with a knockout win over Wilfred Sipion.
05:02As you saw on the tape.
05:03And a decision over tough Mike Tinley.
05:06But Kinchin, of course, has been in there against the tougher guys.
05:09Iran Barkley from the Bronx.
05:11His idol is Joe Lewis.
05:12And here he is fighting right next door to the Joe Lewis Arena in Lewis's hometown.
05:17He's a tall middleweight, too, Gil.
05:22I think he presents an awesome sight in there.
05:25We often remark on what an advantage that is for Thomas Hearns, of course.
05:28Barkley's one of the taller middleweights.
05:30Well, sometimes when a guy is tall, Tim, there's more of him to hit.
05:33That's one of the problems with Barkley.
05:35He's not that great defensively.
05:37Good puncher.
05:37Won the New York Golden Gloves.
05:39Won a lot of amateur championships.
05:40But he's not really as good technically as James Kinchin.
05:43Well, here is James Kinchin, ranked number one in the world by the WBC and the WBA.
05:48And patiently has awaited his opportunity against marvelous Marvin Hagler.
05:53He's from McKinney, Texas.
05:55Now lives in San Diego, California.
05:58A very articulate, bright, pleasant young guy who feels like he has been shunted aside.
06:04But he's got to take on all comers as he waits with patience for his opportunity at a world title.
06:12Number one ranked, James Kinchin from San Diego, California, entering the ring here at Cobo Arena.
06:19James the Heat Kinchin.
06:22So far, he's got the all-league robe on.
06:24I like that with the flames on the bottom there.
06:26All right, James.
06:27Well, here in the state of Michigan, in this 10-round middleweight bout, scoring on the 10-point must system,
06:34there is no standing eight count, but there is a mandatory eight count if a fighter is knocked to the canvas.
06:39If there are three knockdowns in a round, then the fight is ended.
06:42And the count will continue after the bell, except in the final round.
06:47Looking at the tail of the tape, 28-year-old James Kinchin stands 5'9", came in at 161.25.
06:52They're allowed a little over the limit.
06:54This is not a title bout.
06:55And Barkley, 26 years of age, with the height advantage, only a slight reach advantage, came in at 161.
07:03And now let's go up to our ring announcer for the ring introductions.
07:07Here is Michael Buffer.
07:08Ladies and gentlemen, good evening and welcome to the Cobo Arena, right here in the Motor City, Detroit, Michigan.
07:15Tonight, Top Rank Incorporated presents the Motown Middleweight Showdown.
07:20Now, man your battle stations, this is the first of two big middleweight bouts scheduled for 10 rounds.
07:28The referee for this bout is Dale Grayball.
07:33Introducing first, in the red corner, he's wearing the black trunks with red trim and weighs an even 161 pounds.
07:41He has an excellent professional record, 19 victories, only 3 defeats, 14 KOs.
07:48He's from the Bronx, New York, and he's ranked number 5 in the world as a middleweight.
07:53Ladies and gentlemen, Iran, the Blade Barkley!
07:58And his opponent in the blue corner, he's wearing the white trim and weighs 161 and one quarter pounds.
08:12His professional record, an outstanding one, 35 victories, only 1 defeat in 2 draws, 27 KOs from San Diego, California.
08:22Ranked number 1 in the world by the WBA, ladies and gentlemen, James, the Heat Kenshin!
08:41Iran, James, you are both given your instructions in the dressing room.
08:45You're both professionals and I expect a professional contest from you.
08:48Gentlemen, protect yourself at all times. Shake hands and come out boxing. Good luck to both of you.
08:57Now look at Iran Barkley.
09:00Fearsome facial scowl as we begin this 10-round middleweight bout.
09:05Barkley 19-3 with 14 knockouts.
09:0726 years of age from the Bronx.
09:1030-4 as an amateur, a bronze medal winner at the 81 World Games.
09:13James Kinchin with 29 knockouts. I think Michael Buffer had 27 on his introduction, but Kinchin with 29 knockouts in 36 victories.
09:23Only one loss.
09:25That at the hands of James Shuler for the NABF title, which Shuler subsequently lost to Thomas Hearns.
09:33Barkley in black and a solid left hook to the body from Barkley.
09:37Barkley in the opening minutes here. Shorter James Kinchin in white.
09:42The referee in this bout is Dale Grable.
09:47The judges are Randy Erickson, Chuck McHenry, and Chip Acey, all from the state of Michigan, appointed by the commission here.
09:55Barkley with a good body attack here in the early going, scoring that hook.
09:59Two good solid left hooks to the body by Barkley, and he's going to let it all hang out.
10:05He's going to take chances. He may get nailed coming, but he's going to let those punches go.
10:09The last outing, July 24th of this year, a third-round knockout of Basante Blanco.
10:15He's managed by Vinny Ferguson, trained by Hector Roca.
10:18James Kinchin, his last outing, his only fight of 86, July 11th, a seventh-round knockout of Frankie Minton in Las Vegas,
10:33and a real entertaining fight out there.
10:36He has wins over Odell Hadley, Ralph Moncrief, Murray Sutherland, Alex Ramos, Buster Drayton.
10:42The only loss to the late James Shuler.
10:44And that was a very, very close fight, Tim.
10:50Kinchin managed by Wes Wombo, trained by Richard Wombo.
10:55Comes from a big family of McKinney, Texas.
10:58Tim, Kinchin missed the right hand by Roderick.
11:01Would have sent Barkley home.
11:03Set him up here. Solid combination by Barkley.
11:06That got Kinchin's attention.
11:08Tim, he's a winger, right?
11:09So it's going to be an exciting fight as long as it goes.
11:14Barkley's one of those kids that stays in the gymnasium.
11:26Doesn't take vacations between fights.
11:28That's why he's able to have 10 fights in 15 months while James Kinchin only had one.
11:35He's ready to go at all times.
11:37And that's the way fighters should be.
11:44We're a minute left.
11:48Crossing the 32nd mark remaining in round number one.
11:54The thing that may be Barkley's undoing may be his impatience, Tim.
11:57He's throwing punches, but he's leaving himself wide open.
12:00Meanwhile, he's nailing Kinchin with some pretty good left jams.
12:06And a good round for Iran Barkley.
12:08He has his number one rated Kinchin.
12:10Coming to the end of round one.
12:12There's a right hand by Kinchin.
12:13And a hook by Barkley.
12:18The end of round one on our scorecard goes to Iran Barkley.
12:22He stepped in when this opportunity arose to take on James Kinchin.
12:28And for Iran Barkley, an interesting story.
12:31As we mentioned, he had a short but distinguished amateur career.
12:34He was 30-4, a bronze medalist at the 81 World Games.
12:38But in 1982, while boxing on the American international team, traveling the world,
12:43he decided that he needed to turn pro.
12:45And he has a family to feed, relatives to help out,
12:49and decided that he needed to get that professional income
12:53and decided to turn pro.
12:55And interestingly enough, there's his wife on the left, Pam.
12:58Looks like she's doing her meditation here for round number two.
13:01And on the right is Yvonne Barkley, who actually taught Iran Barkley to box.
13:06Yvonne was a professional boxer in the limited women's ranks of boxing,
13:12but was a 135-pounder, we're told.
13:14And she was the one who took Iran to the gym and taught him how to fight.
13:18Now that's a pretty unusual circumstance.
13:21Round number two, scheduled for 10.
13:25The blade and the heat.
13:27Tim, they're going to be exchanging bombs.
13:30Keep your eyes open.
13:33Tim Ryan with Gil Clancy.
13:34We are at the Cobo Arena in Detroit, Michigan.
13:38Later, you'll see Thomas Hearns defend his North American title
13:41against Doug DeWitt from Yonkers, New York.
13:44Tim, Iran Barkley's sister may have started to teach him how to box,
13:51but he has a pretty good trainer in Vinny Ferguson,
13:53who was a very, very good prospect many, many years ago
13:57and got licked by Doug Jones, and that was the end of his career.
14:01But he knows how to teach, and he knows how to train a fighter.
14:05He knows how to train a fighter.
14:07He knows how to train a fighter.
14:08He knows how to train a fighter.
14:09Barkley keeping up a very steady pace,
14:11and particularly using the left hook to the body.
14:15Kinchin now trying to stay closer to the taller Barkley.
14:19He's got a good shot.
14:20He's got a good shot.
14:22He's got a good shot.
14:24Kinch's punches are a lot shorter than Irene Barclay.
14:28He throws his punches a lot shorter and more correct than Irene Barclay throws his punches.
14:34Barclay's a winger.
14:35But he's not going to nail you at any time.
14:42Right hand just fell short.
14:43But that was a perfect example of what you described.
14:46Gil, in fact, he had no idea where the target was.
14:48He wasn't watching his target.
14:50Meanwhile, Kinchin is landing a lot of good short punches inside.
14:59Kinchin's two draws came against unknown Everett Conklin and Jorge Amparo.
15:04That Amparo fight in 1984.
15:09He's only lost to James Shuler.
15:16Barkley lost to Osley Silas in his fourth professional bout.
15:20His fifth fight, to make that.
15:22Stopped by Robbie Sims.
15:24Lost the decision to Ed Hall, but has not lost since 1984.
15:28Kinchin is chewing him up on the inside, Tim.
15:30Kinchin is chewing him up on the inside, Tim.
15:42Short little punches by Kinchin.
15:44Left of the year from Barkley.
15:49Under the thirty-second mark we go in round number two.
15:54Good combination, yeah, by Kinchin.
15:59Solid.
16:00Beautiful liftoff.
16:04Kinchin is a very, very relaxed fighter, Tim.
16:06Very sure of himself.
16:09Well, he has the skins on the wall, as they say,
16:11having only one loss and waiting for his title crack.
16:15Long wait.
16:16That's the end of round number two.
16:18James Kinchin working well inside in that round.
16:23Barkley starting out as he had been doing so successfully
16:27in the first round, landing to the body.
16:29But then Kinchin seemed to move a little closer to him, Gil.
16:32Try to stay inside those looping punches,
16:34and that's when he started to go to work.
16:36Well, that has to be Kinchin's strategy
16:38to take Barkley inside
16:40and put him in those short little combinations.
16:42Barkley, in the meanwhile, gonna use that jab.
16:45Don't even try.
16:46Give him a little gun.
16:48Whoo!
16:49And they're telling Kinchin to stay on the inside.
16:52Barkley has to have range to punch, Tim.
16:54He throws his punches a little too wide.
16:56He's thirty-altering.
16:57What?
16:58I'm gonna be four deep.
16:59Nice and relaxed.
17:00Every round.
17:01We're at Cobo Arena.
17:14Showtime championship boxing.
17:16This is a ten-round middleweight bout, a non-title bout.
17:19Coming up is our championship
17:21North American middleweight title at stake.
17:23Thomas Hearns against Doug DeWitt.
17:25Tim Ryan and Gil Clancy watching
17:27James Kinchin in white.
17:29Byron Barkley and Black.
17:32Heavy hitting by Barkley in round one.
17:34Surgeon-like inside work by Kinchin in round two.
17:54Barkley started out the round jabbing.
17:56Oh, he landed.
17:57Good left hook.
17:58And another one.
18:01But he forgets to use that jab, Tim,
18:02and he lets Kinchin inside.
18:03That's when he gets in...
18:04has his problems.
18:09Yes, he's been leading with his hook very consistently.
18:13See those arms?
18:14He's throwing a lot of wide arm punches.
18:16Trying very, very hard.
18:17Maybe trying a little too hard, Barkley.
18:19Good job, Barkley!
18:20Thanks, Mark.
18:21Take it down.
18:25Take it down.
18:27Take it down.
18:28Good job.
18:29Take it down.
18:30Take it down.
18:31Good job, Barkley.
18:36Good job, Barkley.
18:39as long as Barkley works behind that jab he's fine they got a right hand in right behind that jab
18:50and then he got nailed by a left hook Tim good left hook by Kinchin but the key for Barkley is
18:57to keep snapping that jab and keep keeping Kinchin on the outside left hook again landed by Barkley
19:09that one fell short Kinchin picked it up and he blocks that right hand
19:16missed by Barkley counterpunch short little shot from Kinchin
19:23there's that good jab of Barkley's again in the left hook no question Gil as you've picked up he
19:29does much better when he leads with that left jab he takes chances though Tim he throws that
19:37wings that left hook he gets nailed coming in he's going to be wobbling around the ring
19:41under the 32nd mark we go on round number three
19:53low point oh yeah from Kinchin got a low one in
20:01Barkley's only been stopped once that by Robbie Sims back in January of 84 as we come to the end of round
20:11number three which was a good
20:14mound for I.M. Barclayton this
20:19is at the bell that I would
20:21score that slightly ahead for
20:23Barclay on our card he's up two
20:30to one by rounds this ten round
20:35scheduled middleweight bout
20:37Coldwell Arena Detroit Michigan
20:39about six thousand fans in here
20:41and most of them while enjoying
20:43this one because they know who
20:45Kinchin and Barclay are they're
20:46here to see Thomas Hearns defend
20:48against Doug DeWitt yeah there
20:50goes Barclay hooking off a jab
20:51Tim which is one of the classic
20:52moves in boxing very difficult to
20:54do and every list lifts himself
20:56wide open when he threw that
20:57right hand but he's throwing and
21:02while he missed that last one and
21:04this one right at the bell one of
21:06the things I think both these
21:07fighters have been is very
21:08economical with their punches
21:10they've made most of their
21:11punches count they haven't had a
21:12lot of stuff that hasn't been
21:13scoring well the thing is with
21:15James Kinchin when when Barclay
21:17misses Kinchin has to make him pay
21:19and he hasn't been doing it up to
21:20now this is round four scheduled for
21:23ten you know if you don't have to
21:25pay when you throw punches and you
21:27miss big right hand that wobbled
21:29tension that hurt him Barclay trying
21:32to follow up Kinchin looking very
21:36calm and very professional now he
21:38gets a grab on his opponent he was
21:40rocked Tim as I was about to say if
21:42you don't make a guy pay with his
21:43winging he's gonna wing all night
21:45and that's what Barclay's doing
21:46Kinchin still in difficulty trying to
21:53stay close now and trying to punch
21:55back very poised veteran James
21:58Kinchin Barclay trying to push him
22:01off and get some punching rope
22:03Tim Barclay's what we call in the
22:04business of bricklaying every punch
22:06he throws has an effect this is round
22:11four of the scheduled ten rounder
22:17now Kinchin starting to use those
22:19short little punches inside
22:21Barclay forgot what got him there
22:24so I can use that jab and swing
22:26Kinchin on the outside James
22:28Kinchin trying to protect his number
22:30one rating
22:32Kinchin's corner said come back with
22:57the hook and Barclay didn't hit
22:58Kinchin on the chin
23:01He's a little bit of a rest there
23:04He's been busy
23:18under a minute to go good short
23:23right hand by Kinchin
23:25Kinchin does not expend nearly as
23:27much energy as Barclay when Barclay
23:29I don't know what he's doing.
23:30I don't know what he's doing.
23:31He's doing things. Everything's
23:33behind it.
23:34Kinchin is close.
23:35Real, very good punches.
23:37Correct punches.
23:38Effortlessly.
23:46Tough infighting by both boxers.
23:50Barkley better at range, obviously.
23:53And I think just a little weary here.
23:55Expanded a lot of energy in the
23:56early part of the round when he
23:58came out.
23:59It's an experience, Tim.
24:00He's a big shot, and he's really
24:01letting it all hang out.
24:02They nailed each other.
24:03Yes, they did.
24:04Another right hand by Kinchin.
24:06And that wobbled Barkley.
24:10Final seconds of round four.
24:12What a round!
24:18Kinchin is so composed, though, Tim.
24:20That's right.
24:21Well, Gil Clancy thought Kinchin won the round.
24:23I had to give it to Barkley on the strength
24:24of fact that he had Kinchin in trouble early
24:25in the round, Gil.
24:26But I didn't think Kinchin came back
24:27enough against him to win the round.
24:28Well, Tim, that's what makes
24:29horse racing.
24:30I did.
24:31That's right.
24:32They came out very strongly in the last two minutes.
24:33It may be fortunate for the boxers that neither
24:34of us are doing the scoring for real.
24:38But I'll take note of your giving that round to James Kinchin.
24:41Nice and relaxed.
24:42Don't you punch them together.
24:43Don't you punch them together.
24:44Don't push them.
24:45Don't push them.
24:46Don't push them.
24:47Don't push them.
24:48There's that left hook right hand by Barkley,
24:49and Kinchin did a funny dance, Tim.
24:50And they lay on the button.
24:51However, he did not go down.
24:52Take those punches all night.
24:53Show him.
24:54He did.
24:55That's right.
24:56They came out very strongly in the last two minutes.
24:57That's right.
24:58That's right.
24:59They came out very strongly in the last two minutes.
25:00It may be fortunate for the boxers that neither of us
25:02are doing the scoring for real.
25:03But all take note of your giving that round to James Kinchin.
25:04Hey, you see?
25:05There's that left hook right hand by Barkley,
25:06there's that left hook right hand.
25:07That's right.
25:08That's right.
25:09However, he did not go down.
25:10Take those punches all night.
25:11Showing that he can absorb the big shots from Iran Barkley.
25:15There is James Kinchin standing in the line,
25:18as usual, for a shot at the middleweight title.
25:20Looks like the Hagler Leonard fight's gonna take place,
25:23and Kinchin just has to wait once more.
25:25And in the meantime,
25:27has to take on a dangerous guy like Barkley.
25:29And when the fighters leave the corner,
25:35they give them good instructions in the corner.
25:38They told Barkley to move around, snap his jab,
25:40but about a minute into the round,
25:42he'll probably forget all about the instructions.
25:44He just moved Kinchin with another left hook of the year.
25:48Round five scheduled for ten.
25:50All right, now they have Barkley boxing,
25:52fainting and jabbing, jabbing and fainting.
25:57Good advice from the corner.
26:02I like the way Kinchin is relaxed in the ring.
26:06He's very, very sure of himself.
26:09Doesn't waste a lot of motion.
26:12Throws his punches effortlessly.
26:15But he's in a fight,
26:22and one punch from either guy can change this fight around.
26:25Come together.
26:29Barkley definitely following the jabbing advice,
26:32and so far he's been able to keep Kinchin off.
26:36lands a left hook.
26:42Kinchin, on the other hand,
26:43having a little difficulty reaching Barkley with his jab.
26:48Landed one there.
27:01Sneak right-hand lead by Kinchin,
27:03grazed the chin of Barkley,
27:04but he lands a good combination.
27:06And a right hand.
27:07Then they...
27:08Barkley nailed Kinchin,
27:09and Kinchin nailed Barkley.
27:10And they both score again in that exchange.
27:13Good jab by... by Ryan Barkley.
27:15Stiff jab.
27:16Right-hand lead from Barkley.
27:21Under a minute to go, round five.
27:23Right-hand hook.
27:26Let it go.
27:30Barkley showing good defense on the last exchange.
27:32Yes, yes, Tim,
27:33and he's counter-punching very well.
27:34Throws that hook to the body,
27:35hook on the chin.
27:36Nice combination.
27:38Well, there he went back inside again.
27:40And then he went back inside again.
27:42He's down five.
27:43Right-hand hook.
27:44Let it go.
27:45Let it go.
27:46Let it go.
27:47Let it go.
27:48Let it go.
27:49Let it go.
27:50Let it go.
27:51Let it go.
27:52Barkley showing good defense on the last exchange.
27:53Ryan.
27:54Heat!
27:55Under the thirty-second mark in round five.
27:58Tim Ryan with Gil Clancy watching James Kinchin and White,
28:01the number one-ranked middleweight in the world.
28:04Iran Barkley ranked number four by the IBF,
28:06but not so respected by the other two organizations.
28:09Ten, Jimmy! Ten!
28:10Coming to the end of round five.
28:12Heat! Heat!
28:14Heat!
28:19Again, those punches blocked by Barkley,
28:22winding up the round.
28:23Winding up the round.
28:25And they'll head into round six.
28:27First of all,
28:29let's put a little bit more low, okay?
28:32Do you understand what I said?
28:34Put the ball out of there.
28:36Put the ball out of there.
28:37Put the ball out of there.
28:38Here's the exchange, then,
28:39where they unloaded on each other.
28:41Good left jab by Kinchin,
28:43right-hand by Kinchin,
28:44and left hook by Barkley.
28:45Another right-hand by Kinchin.
28:48Okay.
28:49That's good.
28:50That's good, Jimmy.
28:51Okay.
28:55Okay, baby.
28:56We have to fight a little bit, okay?
28:57Work in the body.
28:58Work in the body.
28:59Don't make him fight.
29:00Right.
29:01You understand?
29:02Right.
29:03He's gonna come now the same way.
29:04So let's do it.
29:05Okay.
29:06Back him up.
29:07Back him up.
29:08Do your job and put some...
29:09Back him up.
29:10Back him up.
29:11Hector Rocha with his instructions for Barkley
29:16as they head into round number six.
29:18Still very determined.
29:19Good concentration
29:21threw out by Iran Barkley
29:23in black and James Kinchin in white.
29:25Now they've changed the Barkley strategy.
29:27They said he has to start punching a little bit more
29:29and work to the body.
29:30I don't know if that's such a good idea.
29:31I think he's doing very well with that left jab.
29:33And he has another assistant trainer over there,
29:35Hector Camacho,
29:36who's also giving him advice.
29:38Chances are Hector will make himself be heard
29:43if he wants to as well.
29:45And he supports the New York fighters, Hector.
29:48Inevitably, he'll go around the country
29:49to other big fights
29:51and stays with those New York guys
29:53he knows from the gyms.
29:56Those short punches by Kinchin
29:58are eating up Barkley on the inside.
30:00Those beautiful combinations inside Kinchin.
30:03And that's what I meant earlier when I said
30:14sometimes being tall is not an advantage.
30:17When they get inside,
30:18Barkley's long arms are wrapping around Kinchin.
30:20Kinchin's shorter arms are scoring the points.
30:23Tough opening lead.
30:32Left hook to the body.
30:35Barkley rips that left hook underneath.
30:46I guess their theory must be
30:47that he can wear down Kinchin
30:49by shooting from inside.
30:50But I certainly agree with your assessment.
30:53Well, he's done better when he's been out there
30:55able to get all of the leverage
30:56on those longer punches.
31:00You have to remember,
31:01Kinchin's only had one fight in 15 months.
31:03And at this pace,
31:04he's doing a remarkable job.
31:06Doesn't look tired.
31:07Trying to put the pressure on Barkley.
31:09Good right hand over a jab by Kinchin.
31:13Good move.
31:14Kinchin is a gym rat as well.
31:16He'll make sure that he stays in shape.
31:19He has not been busy in real fights.
31:22He doesn't,
31:23not the kind of guy that has to work
31:24to get back into condition.
31:32Has Barkley winging away.
31:34He has no idea.
31:35He's going to go.
31:37He's going to go.
31:38He's going to go.
31:39He's going to go.
31:40He's going to go.
31:41He's going to go.
31:42He's going to go.
31:43He's going to go.
31:44He's going to go.
31:45Yeah.
31:46We're in round 6,
31:50scheduled for 10,
31:51a grueling middleweight bout.
31:53James Kinchin and Iran Barkley.
31:55There's an example.
32:00Barkley threw a 1-2,
32:01missed both punches,
32:02punches but kinchin did not count them and barkley's wide open is when he has to take advantage of it
32:13coming to the end of round number six around neither fighter dominated but again perhaps
32:22he might lean toward kinchin's work on the inside because barkley gave him the opportunity there
32:27i wonder how the judges would view that round that was a very very close round tim i'm glad i'm not a
32:32judge a lot of people criticize the judges but when you have to put it down on paper sometimes it's a
32:38little tough well on your card you would have barkley three rounds to two with one even
32:47and mine i would have him four to one with one even you folks at home keeping score no doubt getting
32:53the field for the bout listening in the corner kinchin
33:05i want you to let those punches go and stop trying to loop stand up give me four deep ones real fast
33:10real deep real deep
33:12well you heard
33:19west rombo say i want you to let those punches go stop looping them
33:25i haven't been under the impression he's been doing that very no i haven't i haven't seen any
33:29looping punches this is round number seven tough important ten round middleweight bout here on
33:37showtime championship boxing a little extra snap from kinchin but barkley backs him up
33:47both fighters landed good punches in that exchange kinchin had a little bit better of the exchange
33:53he came out paying attention to what west womboldt said again these fighters they remember what you
33:57say maybe for the first minute it's a real good one to concentrate for three minutes and follow a fight plan
34:08clearly kinchin wanting to stay close
34:11barkley has been alternating between staying outside and going inside as he is now
34:18barkley looks a little more tired to me than kitchen and it should be it should be the other way
34:24around considering as i say the inactivity of kinchin right hand by kinchin and barkley wing the right hand right back
34:40there's a case of barkley wing the right left corner kitchen going two beautiful short punches inside
34:53barkley's mouth a little more visibly open
35:06barkley's mouth a little more visibly open
35:18barkley's mouth a little bit of a lump under the right eye of barkley
35:34barkley
35:42and now might be a little swelling over his left eye
35:46trying to get a closer look at that for you
35:51short punches of kinchin taking effect now barkley landed one winger that knocked
35:57kinchin off balance guy like barkley tim he's dangerous at all times
36:01he could be falling down and hit you with a punch
36:07kinchin scoring more readily inside with those short punches here in round seven
36:15starting to have a cumulative effect
36:18on iran barkley there's the bell ending round number seven
36:22and don't forget that coming up is the north american middleweight championship out featuring this man
36:33the champion thomas hearns in front of 6 000 hometown fans in detroit taking on dub de witt
36:39right number five in the world from yonkers new york has never been down in 33 professional bouts
36:48and de witt realizing that this is probably his last great shot to move into the title picture he is 27
36:56three and three 17 knockouts to his credit thomas hearns 42 and two 36 ko's
37:03his only losses to sugar ray leonard and marvin haggler which presents a rather nifty resume
37:16back inside the arena iran barkley opens round number eight and showing i think a little weariness
37:26all right tim we have to see now if barkley gets a second win because he was a little tired
37:30at the end of the last round but a well-conditioned guy about now should be starting to get a second
37:35win well he came out strongly in the first few seconds banging to the body of kinchin in white
37:41barkley and black tim ryan with gill clancy this is scheduled for 10. number one ranked james kitchen
37:48ibf number four wbc number eleven iran barkley
38:02is
38:18kitchen is fighting himself into shape tim for all 15 months looks better now than he did earlier in the
38:24fight
38:39barkley makes these rounds close to him with the work at with the work ethic
38:44because kitchen is going by far the more effective punches
38:57still think your point earlier about barkley's strategy is well taken even if he is tired and
39:03trying to rest a little he'd be better off outside jabbing trying to get some room to land those bombs
39:09kinchin is very much at home leaning on barkley's chest a little too smart for iran barkley inside tim a
39:19little too much experience
39:23and barkley just keeps winging away that when you miss a punch then your fighters get
39:28much more tired when they miss a punch than when they land and barkley has missed an awful lot of punches
39:32and
39:53parkley landed a good left hook right hand tim
39:56under the 32nd rockley going round eight
40:02kitchen spinning out of that corner well did not want to get trapped in there
40:07barkley is doing much better inside now than he did earlier
40:12but most of this round the effect of punching by kinchin inside
40:16and on my card kinchin has pulled even
40:35help sorry make that four three barkley one even but counting the one you gave him
40:41it's a dead even fight with two rounds to go and there is a very relaxed looking doug dewitt in his
40:45dressing room ready to challenge thomas hearns for the north american middleweight championship
40:52doug dewitt from yonkers new york 27 victories just three defeats three draws 17 knockouts his last
41:01outing he lost against hearns stablemate milton mccrory mccrory stepping up from the welterweight ranks
41:08after his loss to donald curry and made an impressive debut with a boxing decision over doug dewitt
41:15dewitt has said afterwards he didn't fight a smart fight he doesn't intend to repeat his errors
41:20against thomas hearns we'll find out this is round number nine kinchin in white barkley in black
41:27the fight should be decided if we're seeing it correctly in the final two rounds
41:43barkley getting flat-footed and winging that left hook now kinchin doing the boxing and moving
41:48then barkley's landing those bricks again he gets set when he punches
42:00now kitchen opting to box and move back a little more
42:06barkley keeps missing with that big left hook be a little more patient and he's trying just a little
42:11too hard
42:27low blow by barkley
42:28but they're landing
42:37which is what counts snuck in the left there
42:45and in kinchin's corner they're telling him to throw straight punches which is what he should be
42:49doing against the guy that's throwing wide punches but kinchin for the first time starting to back up
42:54move and box from the outside the rounds that i've scored for him have all been from the inside
43:01but barkley's banging with some pretty good shots underneath him that was a case where either guy
43:06couldn't when they both threw right hands
43:11left hook just grazed the chin of kinchin these are all go home punches by barkley if he lands one we
43:16all go home well not till after the hearns the way well yeah we'll stay for that one
43:21and they're a minute to go round number nine it's been a compelling middleweight battle
43:29barkley and kinchin big heavy shots from barkley landing
43:37wing you let a guy wing long enough eventually something's going to happen and it happened
43:42you've got to make a guy pay when he misses with punches
43:45it's been a big shot by barkley and trying to spring to the advantage with under 30 seconds remaining
43:58barkley was having the better of the round up until the knockdown he was landing some pretty good bombs
44:03he was underneath yes i agree gill and he nailed him again another right hand again that hurt him
44:10there he is again those wide punches are getting to him
44:17there's a bell ending round nine a big one for iran barkley and imagine what an upset he would be
44:30performing here tonight kinchin in some real difficulty with only a round to go the number one ranked middleweight
44:37and he walked back to the corner like a drunken sailor he was in trouble now tim we remember we have the point
44:46what round is this
44:50all right all right let's say let's take a look and see what happened
44:56there he weak timmy threw a left hook missed with the left hook come back with the right hand both wide
45:02punches but plenty of power
45:07see it one more time here we see it again mr left hook but he just wings iran barkley dangerous at all
45:13times now tim remember we have the point system this in my opinion puts kitchen way behind he has a big hill to climb
45:21to get into this fight yes he does that would be no doubt at least a two-point round at least a two-point round
45:2710-8 round for barkley who he fell and dominated the entire round and scored the knockdown
45:33kinchin and some real serious difficulty the number one ranked middleweight in the world
45:38until he was in trouble at the end of the round he went back to the corner he was not in good shape
45:42parkley just keeps winging away as they say the punches are awkward he's off balance but he lands
45:57that's what counts he's so much better when he starts with the jab that's right tim when he sets
46:03things up with the jab little patience there he goes now he's painting with that left foot
46:08showing him a little bit of it there again tim he left himself wide open but kinchin does not take
46:13advantage of it and if that's the case you might as well keep throwing punches the other guy doesn't count the punch
46:22final round all right barkley's fighting smart now now he's moving around boxing moving on his legs
46:28tim i hope he doesn't think he has the fight one no you can never be sure even with that knockdown in his pocket
46:38he had him in some trouble back in round four but did not send him to the canvas
46:42in fact you scored the round for barkley i gave it for kinchin i scored it for barkley but it's very close i think no matter what
46:55big left hand by barkley kinchin did counter back with a left of his own
46:59i think barkley can smell victory here tim this is the way iran barkley always fights he lets it all
47:09hang out he's an action fighter good combination by kinchin
47:17iran barkley 19 and 3 he's 26 years of age from the bronx new york
47:21good right hand by barkley tim that hurt kinchin tim again the infinite had a good right hand by kinchin
47:40another one by kinchin that was a looping punch to him it looked better than it was
47:46look how dangerous barkley is no matter what position he's in
47:55end of the 30 second mark we go in the fight
47:59i like the way barkley hooks off that jab
48:07kinchin so composed throughout this fight good right hand by kinchin now in some trouble
48:12on the scorecard that we're keeping anyway
48:23there it is the end of the fight a tough middleweight fight between the top-ranked james kinchin
48:30and iran barkley his highest ranking number four by the international boxing federation
48:35and uh we certainly have to contemplate the possibility of an upset here
48:41as iran barkley scoring a knockdown in round nine
48:46the middle rounds seeming to go to kinchin with some good inside work
48:51but uh we'll see what the judges think the scoring on the 10-round must system
48:57that's what's going on randy erickson chuck mchenry and chip acey will decide the verdict
49:13all right here we see iran barkley letting it all hang out he misses but that doesn't
49:17discourage him a bit back he comes with the right hand and down goes kinchin that's what i say when
49:22when a fighter can wing punches when a fighter can wing punches the way barkley's doing now now
49:27now watch when he misses with the left hook kinchin doesn't do a thing so barkley hits him with the
49:31right hand on the chin and down he goes when you have a fighter like an iran barkley that's blowing
49:36punches and missing you have to counter to stopping from stopping from taking chances like that and
49:42kinchin in my opinion just did not do that enough all right
49:47all right and now we go to ring announcer michael buffer for an interesting decision
50:17and we have a split decision
50:34judge randy erickson scores the bout 97 93 for kinchin
50:41kinchin chip acey scores the bout 96 93 for barkley
50:51chuck mchenry has it 95 94 for the winner on a split decision
50:59iran
51:11barkley the winner and james kinchin a split decision gentlemen let's ask james kinchin first
51:23what he thinks of the call
51:27truthfully i thought i wanted to fight but uh you know this is second time i've been close in somebody's
51:33out of his backyard and uh got a decision like that uh it's nothing to cry over uh iran is a very good
51:40fighter and uh he showed that tonight he's strong and i feel that i've done a great job i didn't uh push
51:47hard enough but you know hey more power to him and you know james that's a very gracious uh losing
51:53speech but nonetheless the impact of this in the ratings you were a game guy to come and risk your
51:58number one ranking you've been waiting for your title shot now you lose to iran barkley what's it
52:03going to mean well if uh if haggler would have gone on ahead gave me my shot i wouldn't have to risk
52:09nothing like this uh i feel that if you're fighting you should go by the rules of the book
52:15and so happened marvin haggler wasn't going by the rules i've been in top 10 for four years now
52:21and never never once was i was was i considered as an opponent for marvin haggler and i had to put up
52:28all these risks fighting all these guys up under me and you know sooner or later something like this
52:34would happen i'm not going to cry about it i'm not going to cry you're going to keep on fighting i'm
52:38sure i'm the best i'm the best in the world so happens uh iran got the nod over me and uh more power
52:44time and i ran to go a long way all right james we'll look forward to seeing you in the ring again
52:48it was a very exciting fight for boxing fans all around the world thank you very much james kinchin
52:52and here's the winner iran barkley from the bronx new york and iran i know you got to be plenty
52:57excited what this means to you you came in as basically a substitute you find yourself upsetting the
53:02number one fighter in the world suddenly you're very much in the middleweight spotlight first i would
53:07like to say i thank my lord jesus christ for this victory but now i want to say james kitchen is one
53:15good fighter can't take nothing away from he was a true man but uh i pushed myself i trained hard
53:23and this is what i wanted i know that i am the best and i want to be the best but kitchen he's a good
53:29fighter i learned some more and i think my trainer hector rucker and all my fans and my friends that's
53:38pulling behind me mikey d pasqua mikey well you did the fighting though young man you did a great job too
53:46let's take a look at the knockdown in that uh ninth round because uh here in the ninth round is where
53:52probably the fight tilted in your favor even though it was a split decision certainly the two judges that
53:57voted for you you missed with a left hook but you had that right hand behind yeah i figured i i worked
54:03on that in the gym with my trainer hector rucker you didn't miss you didn't work on missing the left
54:07hook no i didn't work on missing that that one got a little wild but the right hand i knew that i
54:12followed through with it because i used to just throw the left hook and never come back with the right
54:16hand but now i did it the opposite way so i felt good i'm proud of myself i knew that i could beat him
54:23i knew he's a tough fighter but i knew i could beat him iran now you know you have to stand in line
54:28to get at marvin haggler with the developments going on the talk of the proposed fight against
