00:00Mike Tyson received in training appeared to do little to dampen the enthusiasm of the live gate.
00:15Thousands of other fans determined to be part of this event in Las Vegas
00:19have opted to view the fight on closed circuit at 30 locations.
00:23We're also joined tonight by what is expected to be a record pay-per-view audience in the United States
00:28and millions more watching via satellite around the world for what's being referred to as the Woodstock of boxing.
00:39Good evening, everyone. I'm Jim Hill, your host, for what many anticipate will be one of the most memorable events in the annals of sports history.
00:47Now, one of three compelling reasons creates a rematch in boxing.
00:50A hard-fought match that resulted in a close split decision or draw,
00:54a controversial ending where the official result is disputed by the loser and most observers,
00:59and the final reason, an upset.
01:01And of all the reasons, the upset is the most dramatic.
01:04When an underdog defies the odds and captures victory, we are overwhelmed with amazement.
01:10When Holyfield and Tyson laced up the gloves seven months ago,
01:13Holyfield was the underdog challenger who emerged victorious.
01:16And that inspiring performance has set the stage for tonight's rematch.
01:20Can the new champion repeat his heroics against the once-feared champion?
01:25Well, I'm joined right now by the legendary Sugar Ray Leonard,
01:28a recent inductee into the International Boxing Hall of Fame.
01:31And first of all, Ray, congratulations on that because I know that means a great deal to you.
01:34It was wonderful, Jim. Thank you so much.
01:36Now, let's talk about some real things that are going on.
01:39You've been involved in some classic matchups.
01:41Thomas Hearns, Roberto Duran.
01:43As a matter of fact, the Duran fight, you came back and it's now famous for No Mas.
01:47I'd like you to talk a little bit right now of how you approach a rematch as opposed to that first encounter.
01:53Well, Jim, it seemed like just yesterday when I lost to Roberto Duran.
01:57What I did, I went back to school. I went back to class.
02:00I studied tapes for hours and hours at a time.
02:02And I saw the mistakes that I made during that fight, which was inside fighting.
02:06So for Mike Tyson, I'm sure he studied the tapes and he sees mistakes and wants to improve on those mistakes, too.
02:12Now, what advice would you give to both fighters before tonight's fight?
02:16Well, again, for Evander Holyfield, he did the right thing.
02:20He gave Tyson movement, lateral movement.
02:23He threw a lot of punches. He kept his hands high.
02:25For Mike Tyson, it was a matter of changing because what he tried to do was load up with one big punch.
02:30He abandoned his left jab.
02:32He forgot about the lateral movement, upper body movement.
02:35All Tyson was trying to do was land that one big punch, and that was a big mistake.
02:39Well, this is going to be one magnificent evening, and thanks, Ray.
02:42We'll hear from you a little bit later on.
02:43Now, for more on the saga of Holyfield and Tyson, let's go to Steve Albert at Ringside.
02:48Steve.
02:49All right. Thank you, Jim. Welcome to Ringside.
02:51The relationship between Evander Holyfield and Mike Tyson dates back to the 1984 Olympic trials
02:56when they gravitated towards each other because nobody else would.
03:00Holyfield was a shy country kid while Tyson was very young and socially awkward.
03:04Little did they know at the time they were already on a collision course.
03:08The first time they met in the ring was not November 9, 1996, but during a sparring session in 84.
03:14As Olympic assistant coach Roosevelt Sanders recalled, it was a very competitive fight
03:18that escalated to the point he had to stop it.
03:21Years later, when Holyfield unified the cruiser division and Tyson the heavyweights,
03:25it was apparent that they would meet again, only this time for real.
03:28Exactly five years and one day after their first scheduled fight, Tyson and Holyfield finally met.
03:34A meeting that's being hailed as the fight of the decade, a shocking upset that revitalized the sport.
03:39But the second meeting has expectations even higher.
03:42The curiosity and intrigue surrounding the rematch are compelling,
03:45with the overriding question was the first meeting of fluke.
03:49Tonight, they will reach a dramatic crossroads.
03:52The first fight was an incredible triumph for Holyfield, a shocking loss for Tyson.
03:56It sets the perfect stage for tonight's highly anticipated rematch.
04:00With that, let me bring on my ringside partners.
04:02First, the fight, Dr. Ferdi Pacheco.
04:04And Ferdi, how does tonight compare in terms of drama and excitement
04:08with other big rematches and rivalries over the years?
04:11You know, when you talk about rematches, that's the reason great champions are great.
04:15They get in rematches and they win.
04:17Biggest one to begin with in our current era was Dempsey and Tunney,
04:21where the whole nation stopped to watch Dempsey take on Tunney twice.
04:25Then we had to go forward to an international catastrophe.
04:28It was so big that the Nazis were equating it to some racial wars
04:33when Schmeling came to fight Lewis for the second time
04:35and Lewis obliterated in two rounds.
04:38Then we go to Marciano and Charles.
04:40Two wonderful fights in which Marciano took incredible punishment
04:45to remain undefeated.
04:46And, of course, the one I was involved with and I felt so strongly
04:50is the most charismatic and impressive was the first Ali Frazier fight in the Garden.
04:55Nothing I've ever seen compared to that electricity.
04:58And then the sheer drama, the trench warfare, the life and death of the Thriller in Manila.
05:03Those two fights together are the greatest rematch I've ever seen.
05:08Maybe, perhaps, this, if it turns out to be good, will be in that category.
05:12That we will see it has the potential to be one of those great knights of the heavyweights
05:16that we always dream about.
05:17Well, just about everybody picked Holyfield to lose that first fight.
05:21Now so many people are divided, Bobby Chez.
05:24This one is a tough one to call.
05:25A very difficult fight to predict as opposed to the first fight
05:28when just about everybody at least thought they had the right prediction.
05:31Well, Steve, immediately after the first fight was over, the speculation started.
05:35The Monday morning quarterbacks and these so-called boxing experts all came out in full doses.
05:40They all had their opinions.
05:41Why did Mike Tyson lose?
05:42Why did Vander Holyfield beat Mike Tyson?
05:44Was Mike Tyson a big bully who, when pushed to the test, maybe would fold in a late fight?
05:49Hard fight.
05:50Was that the case?
05:51Or, as many people thought of myself included, did Mike just underestimate Evander,
05:54not train, not bring the best of Mike Tyson to the table?
05:57Well, Vander Holyfield is called the real deal.
06:00Tonight we find out the real truth.
06:02All right.
06:02Good one.
06:03We look forward to your comments throughout the night as well as those of the fight doctor.
06:06Right now let's go over to another member of our broadcast team, our roving reporter.
06:10Let's check in with Jim Gray.
06:12Jim?
06:13Thank you very much, Steve.
06:14I'm now in the locker room with Evander Holyfield.
06:17Holy arrived here about 15 minutes ago, some almost three hours before the fight.
06:23Holyfield getting here early as we take a look at the videotape of him coming in.
06:26Really no entourage for him.
06:28He looks very peaceful.
06:30Doesn't feel as though he have to disprove anybody tonight that he did that back in November.
06:43Feels that he's got a different mission now to prove that it wasn't divine intervention or a fluke
06:48or that Mike Tyson was having a bad night, that he's in the best shape of his life.
06:52In fact, his trainer, Don Turner, told us yesterday that there are absolutely no concerns in this fight
06:59and that he feels that Evander Holyfield will have an easy fight.
07:03We're now joined by the champion.
07:05And Evander, let me ask you that right off the bat.
07:07Is this going to be an easy fight?
07:09Well, I guess it could be.
07:11A victory is easy, right?
07:13So I look to go in there and give him all and I know that I will win.
07:18Evander, we were just talking before we came on here and I asked you,
07:22what do you think about on the day of a fight?
07:24Do you think and concentrate a lot about the fight or do you try and just relax?
07:28Well, already I can fight.
07:31I have prepared for it.
07:32There's no reason to find myself getting caught up in so many things,
07:37trying to reach deeper than what I have to.
07:41I'm very confident.
07:43And the main thing is just relaxing.
07:44The motivation of the last fight was very obvious because it took you six years to get to Mike Tyson
07:51and you were kind of chasing that rabbit and the carrot was out there.
07:53Then you finally got it and you win.
07:55What's the motivation now?
07:57What would it be in this fight?
07:59It's all about the Lord.
08:00It's the Lord getting the glory.
08:03There's no doubt that I will win and the Lord will get the glory.
08:06Are you interested at all in proving or making a statement that it wasn't a fluke,
08:10that Tyson didn't have a bad night, that it wasn't divine intervention?
08:13Well, there's no reason to prove it, but the fact that we are fighting and it's proved itself.
08:21I've done it once.
08:22I can do it again.
08:23The Lord is good all the time.
08:25Evander, you have said that if Mike Tyson changes his game plan that it really doesn't matter
08:30because you feel as though he will abandon it once he is hit.
08:33Will that be your strategy tonight?
08:35And do you believe that Richie Giacchetti or anybody cannot affect or alter what Mike Tyson is?
08:39Well, it's not so much of Mike Tyson, it's so much of what I'm going to do.
08:45It really don't make a difference.
08:46I'm not over-concerned on what Mike's going to do.
08:49I know he's going to come out and fight.
08:51And I have the better game plan and I'm led by the Holy Spirit once again.
08:56So, you know, that's a win.
09:00Evander, good to see you smiling.
09:01We look forward to the fight in just a couple of hours.
09:04Evander, Holyfield, they're playing a major tune right here in this locker room.
09:07It's called Nothing is Too Difficult for Me.
09:10That's the theme song.
09:11He's proved it once before.
09:12Now let's go over to Bill Boggs.
09:14Thank you, Jim.
09:15That satellite dish is shooting my signal to you watching.
09:20And it's part of the monstrous media city that's been constructed behind the Grand Garden Arena
09:25in just the past couple of days.
09:27It's kind of a high-tech trailer park that's beaming fight coverage all over the world.
09:33How interested is the world in this bout?
09:35Well, I'll give you a small example.
09:37It's being broadcast in three different dialects of Chinese.
09:42But what has it been like for a thousand media members to collide in this relatively small space?
09:48Well, I've been here since Monday watching.
09:51Take a look.
09:54Absolutely crazy here in the media tent.
09:57Everybody's ready, the sound and the fury.
10:00Everybody's here.
10:00That's why we're here.
10:03There are over 700 print journalists and over 500 TV and radio broadcasters on site.
10:11The usual bizarre circus scene of a heavyweight title fight.
10:15Did you make a mistake in the first fight?
10:27I lost the first fight.
10:28That's a mistake there is.
10:30Oh, this is just crazy.
10:54We have been busy.
10:58The biggest fight coverage in the history of boxing, the richest purse in the history of sport, celebrities arriving every minute.
11:05But I think I better get back inside.
11:08Back to you, Jim Hill.
11:09Okay, Bill, thank you very much.
11:11And get on back in here because this is really where it's at.
11:14Back now with Sugar Ray Leonard.
11:15And tonight's fight has a little something for everyone as we feature, in addition to the Holyfield Tyson rematch,
11:21a pair of former champions in non-title bouts, an eight-round women's boxing special attraction,
11:26and a middleweight championship fight.
11:29So right now, here is a look at tonight's bout order.
11:31First up, former WBC lightweight champion Miguel Angel Gonzalez against Bert Braciosa in a super lightweight bout.
11:38And Ray, what about Gonzalez?
11:40Can he be a champion moving up to 140 pounds?
11:42I believe he can, Jim, because Gonzalez is such a talented young guy, so the additional weight will not bother him.
11:47Our next bout features longtime foes Christy Martin versus Andrea DeShong in a women's championship contest.
11:53Now, Ray, this is the third time that they've fought.
11:55They know each other pretty well.
11:56But where do you, as a boxing hall of famer, stand now on the issue of women's boxing?
12:01Well, Jim, personally, I would not want to wake up with my wife with matching black eyes.
12:04But I still believe that women's boxing is okay as long as they're protected.
12:09Mexican boxing legend Julio Cesar Chavez will be seeking his 100th career victory when he faces Larry LaCossiere.
12:16And what about Chavez?
12:17Ray, certainly one of the all-time greats, but does he still have enough to make a top 10 list?
12:21Although Chavez in the latter part of his career, I still believe that his experience and know-how, ring generalship, will put him in the top 10.
12:28Then comes our main event, Holyfield versus Tyson for the WBA heavyweight championship.
12:34And following our featured bout, we will give you fans watching tonight's telecast a real bonus.
12:39WBO middleweight champion Lonnie Bradley defending his title against John Williams in a fight that was recorded earlier here this evening.
12:46Once again, Showtime Event Television and King Vision offer you two ways for those of you watching the telecast to participate and be part of this magnificent event.

15:35So let's begin what promises to be a night to remember.
15:39Standing by at ringside to call all the action.
15:41Steve Albert, Ferdy Pacheco, and Bobby Chez.
15:43Gentlemen.
15:43All right, Jim, former lightweight champion, Miguel Angel Gonzalez, tuning up for an anticipated showdown with six-time world champ Julio Cesar Chavez.
15:53Gonzalez will face Filipino Roberto Graziosa.
15:59Roberto Graziosa moments away from the fight of his life, a boxing career which began in 84.
16:03Not exactly a sterling record, and you really have to search to find any recognizable names on his ring record.
16:09He fought one champion, Jesus Salud, in 1990.
16:12Lost on a decision.
16:13Lost two of his last three, including a fourth round TKO.
16:17He's dropped five of his last nine.
16:18Overall, 17 of his 51 fights are defeats.
16:21But looking on the bright side, only two of them by knockout.
16:24Unrated by any world organization.
16:26He's fought only nine times in the last seven years.
16:29And he told us very candidly because his wife didn't want him to fight.
16:34Miguel Angel Gonzalez, hoping to showcase his skills for a possible showdown with Chavez,
16:39made ten title defenses of his WBC lightweight crown.
16:43Vacated to move up with the guarantee of fighting the winner of Chavez, Oscar De La Hoya.
16:47Lost to De La Hoya.
16:48Unanimous decision, although he fought well, showed he could take a punch.
16:51His last defense in 95, a shaky majority decision over Lamar Murphy on the Tyson McNeely card.
16:57Let's check the numbers.
16:58We go to the tail of the tape, brought to you by the Ring Magazine, the Bible of Boxing.
17:02Franciosa, five years older than Gonzalez.
17:05Height advantage for Gonzalez, both over the 140 weight limit, two and a half inch reach advantage, Gonzalez.
17:10And let's go to the Nevada rules and check out some key issues.
17:15Scoring on the 10-point bust.
17:16No standing eight.
17:18Three knockdown rule is in effect.
17:19Only the ref can stop it.
17:20A fighter cannot be saved by the bell.
17:23And that is except in the last round.
17:26And if an accidental fail occurs before the end of the third round, the fights rule the technical draw.
17:30If it happens after the end of the third, they go to the scorecards.
17:33Incomplete rounds are scored.
17:36So here at the MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas, we're closing in on a matchup between former world champion Miguel Angel Gonzalez
17:42and Roberto Granciosa and Roberto Granciosa were set for the formal introductions from our ring announcer Jimmy Lennon Jr.
17:50Ladies and gentlemen, a very good evening to you.

18:03Brought to you by Don King Productions and King Vision in association with Showtime, event television, the MGM Grand and gold premium beer.
18:12At this time, ladies and gentlemen, before we present this bout, we ask your attention for a solemn and serious moment
18:20as Don King Productions dedicates tonight's event to the memory of Dr. Betty Shabazz along with the many, many innocent victims of crime and violence.
18:30We honor their memories with the traditional boxing tribute.
18:34At this time, ladies and gentlemen, please rise as our timekeeper tolls 10 for the memorial 10 count.
19:00Thank you very much, ladies and gentlemen, may God rest their souls and make this world a better place to live in.
19:10Well, fans, at this time, we present a special attraction coming away, 10 rounds of boxing scheduled super lightweights in the ring.
19:19This bout is sanctioned by the Nevada State Athletic Commission.
19:23The chairman is Dr. Elias Ghanom.
19:26Introducing to you our judges scoring this bout from ringside.
19:30Bill Graham, Bill Graham, Dolby Shirley, and Paul Smith.
19:34And now here's our referee in charge of this bout.
19:37He'll be giving instructions after the introductions, Jay Nady.
19:43All right, fans, here we go.
19:45Introducing to you first on my left, fighting out of the blue corner, wearing gold trunks with black trim.
19:52He's originally from Samar in the Philippines, now fighting out of Honolulu, Hawaii.
19:58He weighed in at 144 pounds.
20:02His record stands at 31 wins, 17 losses, 3 draws, and 16 wins coming by way of knockout.
20:10Welcome a fighter they call the Hawaiian Gladiator.
20:14Introducing Roberto Granciosa.
20:17And his opponent across the ring on my right, fighting out of the red corner in this 10-round attraction.
20:27Wearing black trunks with gold trim, hailing from Mexico City, Distrito Federal, Mexico.
20:35He weighed in at an even 145 pounds.
20:38His outstanding record includes 42 wins, one loss, 32 wins coming by way of knockout.
20:46Here is the former WBC lightweight champion of the world, currently ranked the number two contender by the WBC and the WBA.
20:54Introducing Miguel Ángel González.
21:06Once again, a referee in charge, Jay Nadey, now to give instructions.
21:10Miguel.
21:10We have 10 rounds.
21:19Remember the low will be below the belly button to the hip bone.
21:24Below, that's a foul.
21:25Behind the ears is a foul.
21:27Do you have any questions?
21:2910 rounds.
21:29I want a good, clean fight.
21:30It'll be my commands.
21:32Let's go to work.
21:32Final instructions from referee Jay Nadey, Miguel Ángel González.
21:43Coming off his first loss, once billed as a future superstar, excellent fighter, never really achieved the greatness that was predicted.
21:51Closed in on it about three years ago, but just couldn't get to that next level.
21:54And Roberto Granciosa, a southpaw prior to tonight, most prominent name on his rink record, Steve McCrory, who beat him by decision back in 91.
22:07All right, here we go.
22:08Round one, scheduled for 10, a super lightweight bout.
22:12Miguel Ángel González, the former champion.
22:15Scheduled for 10, a super lightweight bout.
22:18Miguel Ángel González, the former champion of the black trunks with a gold trim.
22:21Roberto Granciosa, from the Philippines, now makes his home in Honolulu, Hawaii, in the gold trunks with the black trim.
22:29Granciosa said he switches both ways, Steve, but stays south.
22:32They're in tough fights.
22:33He came out of southpaw.
22:34My guess is he stays that way tonight.
22:37Granciosa told us the key is to counterpunch.
22:40That González is a slow start.
22:41He says they've got to watch out for his straight right.
22:44As mentioned, a southpaw, boxer puncher moves around a lot.
22:47And González said, hey, I've been around a long time.
22:52I know what to do, but I've been off the last five months.
22:54I'd like to get some rounds in.
22:55But if the opportunity comes up, I'll go for it.
23:00Wise words from a sage man.
23:05Now, González, he said he switches.
23:08He's more lefty.
23:09Very durable.
23:10He looks strong.
23:11He said he's fought to five or six southpaws.
23:14And as you can see, Granciosa in the southpaw stance.
23:18It certainly doesn't present any mystery whatsoever to Miguel Angelo.
23:22He's just warming up, trying to find the body right now.
23:27And, you know, just a feeling out sort of process.
23:30Not anything impressive going on either way.
23:32You know, González likes to loop his shots.
23:33His hook is wide.
23:34His right hand is wide.
23:35Even his body shots, he kind of wings him in and lets him run a long way.
23:39He's not a straight puncher, short distance type puncher.
23:42But he'll tell you what.
23:43He starts slow, but he's got heavy hands.
23:45Yeah, he's like Chavez.
23:47It doesn't seem like he's doing anything to you.
23:49All of a sudden, it adds up.
23:50And this guy does have heavy hands.
23:52Miguel Angelo, González.
23:53I thought he did a good job with De La Hoya.
23:55I mean, you know, De La Hoya is really good.
23:59He did a number on De La Hoya's face, didn't he?
24:01It looked like De La Hoya was the beaten fighter afterwards, although De La Hoya won it.
24:05And González, comparisons to Chavez over the years.
24:09He looks at Chavez as a springboard to Oscar De La Hoya again, saying, Oscar took my zero from me.
24:16His zero in the column to the right of the victories.
24:21Well, I'd pay to see that again.
24:22I think it's a very even match.
24:24Well, I'll tell you what.
24:24For anyone to say they're looking to use Chavez as a springboard, it had better at least be careful.
24:29That is confidence.
24:30He isn't obsessed, he told us, with fighting Chavez, but it motivates him.
24:36He says, my dream fight, though, is to go for the 140-pound title.
24:40And he does not look at Julio as a hero.
24:44But he does say he's great for Mexico.
24:46Final seconds of round one.
24:48There you go, there you go.
24:52There you go, there you go.
24:56There you go, there you go.
24:57There you go.
24:59González pounding away.
25:01Right, right, right, right, right, right, there you go.
25:05Going to the body and then upstairs as we head for the bell.
25:08Come on there.
25:10There you go.
25:11So round one is in the books.
25:19Moments ago, the main event challenger arriving here at the MGM Grand, and there he is.
25:26Mike Tyson, who was very subdued, very low-key at Thursday's weigh-in.
25:31Not looking to instill fear or intimidate, almost respectful of Evander Holyfield, who appeared very composed.
25:38But here is the arrival of Mike Tyson.
25:41It drew some cheers from the early arrivals here at the MGM Grand Garden.
25:45They put it up on the big screen.
25:49A little wink to somebody on the side.
25:51So he seems very cool as he is just a few hours away from a chance at redemption.
26:01Mike Tyson is in the house.
26:02And we are back inside, getting set for round two of this super lightweight belt.
26:14Not that much action in that first round, except that González set the pace for body attacks.
26:19That's where I thought he took the round, and I think he's finding the range.
26:24He started to throw a lead right hand down the middle, a straight right hand, something he doesn't do often,
26:28with a good counter hook right with it.
26:30But I'll tell you what, he just leads to the body.
26:33He doesn't care about it at all.
26:34It's kind of dangerous to do, but he will just drop his hands and fire downstairs.
26:38González like Chávez.
26:41Not a fast starter, but a nasty finisher.
26:43He does have the tremendous tools.
26:45Very smart.
26:47Good counter puncher.
26:48Fast.
26:49Good hand speed.
26:50Quick combination.
26:52Loves that body attack.
26:53He certainly loves the right hand.
26:54He's putting it in with great effect on the body, and he's switched up to a head,
26:58and he's got a little lump coming already under the left eye of Granciosa.
27:05The result of some of those power shots from González, and he can punch with power.
27:10Give him up.
27:11As Bobby pointed out, the best punch is the straight right.
27:14Also a very good right uppercut.
27:16You know, he whips it in there.
27:18He leans in, and he throws it with some authority, puts his weight behind it.
27:21There you see it again.
27:21He will dive into the body, and lead body shots are sometimes very dangerous,
27:25because you can get caught on the way in, and the momentum gets used against him.
27:28Always in excellent condition.
27:30González in the black trunks, but the wrap on him is weak chin.
27:36And that he's easily hurt, and sometimes a little too mechanical.
27:40But his people say that many, if not all, of these problems stem from his struggle with weight
27:44prior to his step up to 140.
27:47You know, dehydration can have an effect on your chin, can have an effect on your performance endurance-wise.
27:54It's a difficult thing to make a weight, try and suck that extra two or three pounds off
27:58to get to a place that's not really comfortable.
28:01González, a well-schooled fighter.
28:04There's a trade in the center of the ring.
28:08González, though, getting the better of the two.
28:10A poing left hook there by Granciosa went nowhere.
28:18Her free keeps telling him to raise him up, because these punches, some are going south of the border.
28:23And when González punches him with a lot of power, it could be hurting.
28:28Granciosa has 17 losses, 31-17-3, but he told us he's never been down.
28:33As a pro of his 17 losses, only two by TKO, the rest by decision, unrated.
28:41Seven of his last eight wins, if you're looking at the glass half-full, by knockout.
28:48But he's lost five of his last nine fights.
28:54He lost his first three right off to start, one-one, then lost another one.
28:57So for the first five, he, you know, he's not at the skill level of Miguel Ángel González, but he's a tough guy.
29:11We'll take you into the corner of Miguel Ángel González.
29:15There you go.
29:17Muy, muy bien.
29:18Deep breath.
29:21Timo los pies.
29:23Now.
29:24Don't go to the other side of the body, and start working the other side.
29:35Just don't stay on one side.
29:36Hook to the body, hook to the head.
29:41Don't hurry yourself, just keep on going at the same pace.
29:44Steady, steady, steady.
29:48Deep breath.
29:49Very calm and confident corner.
29:59There's very little being said.
30:00There's very little instruction.
30:02Everybody's happy with their fighter's progress.
30:06Abel Sanchez doing the talking.
30:08As we look at Roberto Granciosa, born in Samara, the Philippines, lives in Honolulu since 1988.
30:13They touch gloves, and we settle into round three.
30:17Non-title affair.
30:18Scheduled for 10.
30:21Stop.
30:22He punches up, okay?
30:24A warning to González for low blows by Jane 80.
30:27He's been doing that all.
30:28I mean, anytime you punch that much, and there's such a small area to aim at there, this guy's got his trunk wheel.
30:33Yeah, and he whips them in there.
30:35They're not light shots.
30:36If you start getting hit regularly low, that is going to weaken you.
30:39Well, if I was a referee, I'd look at anywhere below that Granciosa.
30:43I would consider a low blow, but not on the belt line.
30:46I mean, it's way up.
30:46Stop.
30:47Keep the punches up.
30:48Another warning from Jane 80.
30:50One more, he could get a point deducted.
30:52Oh, he will.
30:53You know, I wouldn't doubt that he has a point or two deducted in this fight,
30:55because he is landing some clearly low.
30:58And it's been done.
30:58See, that's very low.
31:00Very low.
31:01Very low in the air.
31:02One point.
31:03Yep, there it is.
31:04One point.
31:05One point for this fighter.
31:06Keep the punches up.
31:08Okay.
31:08So a point taken away from Miguel Angel Gonzalez.
31:11Not sure overall if that's going to help Mr. Granciosa in the long run, but we'll see.
31:17Well, we've seen things where, you know, if they continue to do it,
31:20and this guy's battle plan is to punch to the body,
31:23then he's in danger of disqualification.
31:24And then that would wreck the whole wagon train.
31:27So it's not easy.
31:28It's not a small thing that he just did.
31:30It's a big thing.
31:30Would be a major derailment.
31:33Gonzalez looking to get a showdown with Chavez after this fight, perhaps in September.
31:39Gonzalez, a boxing prodigy, turned pro at 18, won a world title at 21.
31:43By 24, many thought he had the potential to be the best pound-for-pound in the world,
31:48or at least in that category.
31:49Now at 26, looking to bounce back after his first loss in 42 fights.
31:54The decision to De La Hoya.
31:55You see here he's clearly staying off the body for a little while, keeping his punches to the head.
31:59Bobby, I was just going to ask you, if you were in a corner, would you tell this guy,
32:03okay, forget the body for a while, go to the head until this referee gets it out of his mind,
32:07or would you say, don't change anything, keep right on going with what you're doing?
32:09Well, obviously I tell him to try and stop hitting him low, hit him in the body, not below the body,
32:14but if he can't be real careful with that, stay off the body for a while.
32:19Let some time pass.
32:20I think in the corners that I work with Angelo, he'd say, hey, don't go to the belly for a while,
32:26start working on the top, and don't put us in a position where we may lose this qualification.
32:33It's supposed to be an easy fight, not a tough one.
32:40Under 40 seconds remaining in round three, scheduled for 10.
32:45Gonzalez continues to go to the body.
32:47Oh, look out, and down goes Bronciosa for the daily reaction, Steve.
32:52Three, four, five, six, seven, eight.
32:58Come here, come to me, come to me.
33:00You okay?
33:01You okay?
33:02Box.
33:05I didn't hear an affirmative action.
33:07Final seconds round three, can Bronciosa survive the round as Gonzalez, a great finisher over the years,
33:13looks to put Bronciosa away.
33:15I'll tell you what, the head shots are doing better than the body ones did.
33:17It was a big right hand that nailed it.
33:26Water, water, water.
33:27Stop, stop.
33:28The doctor in the ring.
33:30Can I die on, please?
33:33Leon Panasio out of Trenchland.
33:35You got to listen to me.
33:36I need this to me, okay?
33:38You got to move your hand.
33:46How's your fighter?
33:47All right.
33:48First night, this first look at a knockdown.
33:51It's a right hand.
33:52Just right on the button, and it's cumulative.
33:54It's just delayed reaction.
33:56Boop, down he goes.
33:57But it was right, right good.
33:58Bobby, take super slow.
33:59We're going to go.
34:00Gonzalez is staying off the body now, working some shots up.
34:03Here you see a beautiful rising, right uppercut.
34:05He may have broken his nose.
34:06There's a lot of blood coming out of Grancioso's nose.
34:10And it looks like it is all over.
34:13The doctor, Flippamanski, was in the corner, and it is all over.
34:18Miguel Angel Gonzalez in round number three ends it.
34:22They had a discussion over there in the corner, and there goes Roberto Grancioso, who may have
34:32a broken schnoz as a result of that heavy right hand by Miguel Angel Gonzalez.
34:39Interesting scoring in round three.
34:41Gonzalez got docked a point for a low blow, but he knocked down Grancioso with 35 seconds
34:47to go.
34:48A 9-8 victory for the points, anyway.
34:51Unusual, but Gonzalez will accept it without question.
34:58So, Bert, Roberto Grancioso goes down to defeat for the 18th time.
35:04Miguel Angel Gonzalez able to bounce back from his first loss.
35:07Ups his record to 43-1 with 33 KOs, and hoping he's a step closer to a showdown with fellow
35:13countryman Julio Cesar Chavez, perhaps in September.
35:16Or, assuming Chavez isn't upset in the next fight.
35:20Upset as in losing, or just upset as in not happy?
35:23Take your pick.
35:24Oh, okay.
35:25But upset as in losing.
35:27Not sure what Gonzalez proves or accomplishes by beating a man with 17 losses on his record
35:32coming into this fight, a relative unknown.
35:34But perhaps he just needed some confidence following his first defeat and some work.
35:38Didn't get much work, only three rounds were.
35:42There he is with his trainer, Abel Sanchez.
35:45Meanwhile, Roberto Grancioso goes back to beautiful Honolulu, Hawaii, with a record of 31-18-3.
35:56And he's now lost three of his last four fights, six of his last ten.
35:59Set for the official time from Jimmy Lennon Jr.
36:03Ladies and gentlemen, this bout has been stopped at the end of round number three.
36:09Our referee in charge, Jay Nady, calls a halt to the contest.
36:13He's the winner by way of technical knockout, Miguel Ángel González.
36:19So a third-round TKO for former WBC lightweight champion Miguel Ángel González.
36:29Quick work of Roberto Grancioso.
36:32Just an anxious moment when he had a point deducted because of the low blow, but then he came back strong.
36:43Well, we'll be hearing from Miguel momentarily.
36:46Coming up next, the return of Christy Martin as we go backstage into her dressing room.
36:51Christy and her manager, trainer, husband Jim, recently mending fences with promoter Don King.
36:56And tonight, her first fight since November 9th, when she stopped Bethany Payne in the first round of the Tyson Holyfield one-card here at the MGM Grand.
37:04There she is with the husband Jim, set to defend her WBC women's lightweight title and unofficial female pound-for-pound championship
37:11against Andrea DeShong, who handed Martin the only defeat of her professional career.
37:17And she is winging away at husband Jim.
37:22So right now, we're set for post-fight reaction from our first bout to the fight.
37:25Congratulations, very well done.
37:27Did you think they were going to take the point because you gave it down?
37:31Well, definitely, I think it was a bit...
37:34I feel that it was a bit just and a bit unjust because I think the player had a bit, really,
37:39slightly on the shoulder.
37:41And somehow, I think it helped me a lot to find out that I was not going to make the same mistake or that they were going to take another point.
37:47Yes, and the question was, do you think it's right that they took a point away?
37:50And he said, yes, it was right, in a way.
37:52In a way, it wasn't because his trunks were so high.
37:55However, he also said that he is...
37:59He was glad that they took it away because it stepped up his attack on the head and finished him.
38:02And you know what?
38:03Do you think the next one?
38:05Yes, definitely.
38:06I think I have it in mind.
38:07Unfortunately, he hasn't told us a date or the official place, Mr. Don King.
38:12I think he didn't want to distract us from this commitment.
38:17He wanted to get out of his commitment.
38:20And my promoter, Don King, will decide where and when he's going to be the fight.
38:26All right, definitely, it's on.
38:28It's up to Don King where and when.
38:29He said he doesn't think they told him before because he didn't want to get his mind off this fight.
38:33To do this fight and to do it well was Don King's purpose.
38:36And now, it's up to Don King to see where he goes.
38:39And the fight, do you think it's difficult or do you think you can take it well?
38:43Yes, definitely, I think it's a difficult fight.
38:45I don't have to trust.
38:46It's true that after this commitment, I'm going to get me very soon to the gymnasium.
38:51I'm thinking that at any moment, I can do the fight.
38:53And I think it's definitely a difficult fight.
38:55It's a difficult fight, Julio César Chávez, because he has a lot of experience.
38:59Maybe I'll triple it in terms of fights.
39:01But I think, in some way, he balances the balance.
39:06He's with his youth, his experience.
39:07And I, with his youth, with his ability to win the championship.
39:11All right, he says you can't ever underestimate Julio César Chávez.
39:15He's still a great fighter, still a great guy.
39:17He thinks youth will take it.
39:18And he's looking forward to the fight because he thinks he can beat Julio César Chávez.
39:22And now, we return to Steve Albert at ringside.
39:25A Chávez-González matchup, even today, might fill up Azteca Stadium in Mexico City.
39:31All right, Ferdy, let's take a look at the online scoring results from our initial bout.
39:36Here's the way the online voting for the fight went through the HolyfieldTyson.com website.
39:40Very evident, very obvious.
39:42Three rounds to nothing for González.
39:44If you took part, thank you very much.
39:46The online voting will continue with the start of our next bout.
39:49Christy Martin vs. Andrea Deschamps.
39:52Bobby Chez, how about keying in on our first fight as we go to the Telestrator?
39:57Miguel Hernández-González, what he's doing, he's stalking his man.
40:03He has not been able to, he's not punching down here anymore, nothing down here, nothing low.
40:07He's now taking his punches, he's bringing them up.
40:09He's got the right hand and the left hook over here.
40:11You'll see, as the tape rolls, he stalks them, pushes them back to the ropes,
40:14and he catches them with a nice, rising right uppercut.
40:16But he's keeping his punches up.
40:18That one's up in the mid-chest area, everything not low.
40:21And now you'll see the right hand.
40:23And down he goes with a delayed reaction.
40:26The punch probably broke his nose because it seemed to be bleeding quite a bit.
40:30But, good clean shot, one punch, knockout.
40:33All right, Bobby, the anticipation builds here at the MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas, Nevada.
40:40We are getting set for the main event.
40:42Holyfield vs. Tyson 2, and from high above, the undistingable view of Las Vegas, Nevada.
40:48The City of Lights in entertainment.
40:50Tonight, boxing takes center stage, coming up later.
40:53Holyfield, Tyson the rematch.
40:55Tyson opened as a 2.5 to 1 favorite, despite losing the first bite.
40:59Now, just under 2 to 1, Tyson is favored, about 1.8 to 1.
41:05The City of Lights in entertainment.
41:12The City of Lights in entertainment.
