00:00Buffalo Run Casino in Miami, Oklahoma.
00:05The crowd is inside settling down for a main event between undefeated fighters once again.
00:10Americo Santos and Isaac Mendoza in a junior welterweight bout scheduled for ten rounds.
00:20Nick Charles with Steve Farwood ringside and ready for action Steve.
00:24You know Americo Santos from everything we've seen,
00:27not only does he set a blistering pace, but he wants to bomb you out from the opening bell.
00:32So given those attributes and qualities and his aggression,
00:36how does Isaac Mendoza nullify that and win this fight?
00:39Well, it's going to be difficult for Mendoza.
00:41The first thing he has to do is show that he has a good chin.
00:43I don't care how good defensively he is, he's going to get hit.
00:46Because Santos just never stops throwing punches.
00:48To Mendoza, composure.
00:50Very important for him to stay cool in this fight.
00:52Make it a long fight, three counter-punching.
00:54I think he needs to get inside because Santos has very long arms.
00:58And I don't think he's very comfortable inside.
01:00So the first few rounds, it's important for Mendoza to just get through them.
01:03Try to win the fight in the second half.
01:05Mendoza's look composed from what we've seen of him.
01:07He's a very clever fighter, but Santos is flat out pure excitement to watch.
01:12And let's take a look at Americo Santos first.
01:14From Garland, Texas, just outside Dallas-Fort Worth.
01:17He won several state titles as an amateur and has been a pro three years.
01:21Santos is only 21 years old and says he can box or brawl.
01:25But in every fight we've seen him, he never seemed to stop punching.
01:29And lets his offense be his defense.
01:31It's that simple.
01:32He knocked out his last opponent a month ago.
01:34And hits the ring tonight unbeaten with 17 of his 20 wins by KO.
01:38Steve, take us behind the numbers of Americo Santos.
01:42Well Nick, common opponents Santos and Mendoza both hold wins against Johnny Walker and Cory Alarcón.
01:49But where Mendoza scored decisions, Santos stopped both of them.
01:52He's most definitely the bigger puncher in this matchup.
01:54Groomed with care, this is a step up for Santos.
01:57His opponents have won only a combined 39% of their bouts.
02:01But no big deal, Mendoza's opponents have only won 50% of their bouts.
02:05And KO's in perspective.
02:08Santos can bang as his record suggests.
02:10But consider that not one of the seven opponents he KO'd in the first round had a winning record.
02:16Well Isaac Mendoza is the local favorite from Tulsa.
02:19He had over 80 amateur fights and turned pro two and a half years ago.
02:23He's 26, has never been beaten.
02:25A counter puncher who's aware of Santos' power and will look to outbox him.
02:29Mendoza's won his last four by decision.
02:32His most recent fight was in February when he ran his record to 13-0 with five knockouts.
02:38Steve, what's behind those numbers?
02:40Well baby steps.
02:41Mendoza's unbeaten but he's been spoon fed.
02:44Johnny Walker had lost 11 in a row before facing Mendoza.
02:47Oney Hellams had lost 9 in a row.
02:49And Rich Dinkins hadn't won in his previous 27 bouts.
02:53Pressure not pop.
02:54Mendoza is an aggressive counter puncher but not a KO puncher.
02:58In his two most recent bouts he scored decision wins over Walker and Alarcón.
03:02Those two had previously been stopped to combine 13 times.
03:05And small advantages.
03:07Mendoza's been very busy.
03:09He fought seven times last year.
03:11He's been 10 rounds and he's fought here at the Buffalo Run Casino in his last two starts.
03:15Small advantages but advantages nonetheless.
03:18Amariko Santos likes to box but loves to slug.
03:23Now he's up against Isaac Mendoza who says he can do both.
03:26A 10 round face off of unbeaten junior Wilderweights is next.
03:29So let's go back to ring announcer Jake Gutierrez.

04:15Introducing the three judges who will be scoring this bout.
04:19Max DeLuca of California.
04:21Gerald Ritter of Oklahoma.
04:24And Peter Trematerra from Florida.
04:27And your referee in charge is Gary Ritter.
04:31And now, ladies and gentlemen, from the Buffalo Run Casino,
04:35right here in Miami, Oklahoma,
04:38it's time for the leather to fly.
04:41This is the show box main event.
04:45Ten rounds of boxing in the junior welterweight division.
04:51Introducing first.
04:52He'll be fighting out of the blue corner.
04:54He's wearing the white trunks with a red trim.
04:57And he weighed in at 137 and a half pounds.
05:00He has a perfect professional record.
05:02Thirteen victories, no defeats.
05:04Five wins by knockout from Tulsa, Oklahoma.
05:09Here is Isaac Mendoza.
05:18And his opponent fighting out of the red corner.
05:21He's wearing the black trunks trimmed in gray.
05:24He also weighed in at 137 and a half pounds.
05:27He too is undefeated with a perfect unblemished record.
05:30Twenty victories, no defeats.
05:33Seventeen big wins by knockout from Garland, Texas.
05:37Introducing the undefeated, America Santos.
05:43Come on, baby. Come on.
05:46Welcome.
05:48Okay, Isaac, come to the ring.
05:52Okay, gentlemen, you received your instructions earlier.
05:53I want a good, clean fight.
05:55Protect yourself at all times.
05:56Obey my commands.
05:57Both trunks are good.
05:58Touch your gloves.
05:59Touch your gloves.
06:00Let's have a good one.
06:02Look at the numbers.
06:03Santos is taller and longer, but his swarming style will likely negate his three-inch reach advantage.
06:11And same rules apply for this one.
06:14Remember, in case of an accidental foul, they go to the scorecards after the fourth round.
06:17Boy, if you thought you were seeing double in the referees, it's Gary Ritter.
06:20Twin brother, identical twin of Gerald.
06:21He stopped the first fight mercifully.
06:24Now, not only two times five guys, you're seeing the other players, but no one has a penalty.
06:25Now that is r palabra round over the three guys, but at the same time, he's going to win.
06:27Now, he's going to win six guys.
06:29After now, he's going to win $1,000.
06:30And you're going to win five guys, and you're going to win $1,000 a win, and you're going to win $1,000 a win.
06:33If you're going to win one game,
06:35you'll win six guys.
06:36It's not even a victory.
06:38Gerald he stopped the first fight mercifully. Gary says he's the a good-looking brother. How do you know that's not Gerald?
06:44I don't
06:48Mendoza's got to stay away from Santos's bull rush. He will be on top of him from the opening bell. That is a promise
06:57Here he comes
06:59Santos in black
07:01Wants to create havoc and Steve we don't know really how much of a bomber he is
07:05But he just loves to drop them. Oh boy Santos comes out
07:09I mean every fight and he's doing it again now like the other guy stole his lunch money
07:12I mean he's he just has this intensity like he wants to crush the other guy with as quickly as he can well already
07:19I'm impressed with what you talked about Mendoza
07:21Not necessarily being able to take it. We don't know that yet, but his counter punching ability like that. Yeah, left hook
07:28With two beauties so Mendoza with real smart aggression here
07:33Santos runs into a left hook
07:35Santos very wild don't flip don't turn him
07:41Santos want to get off first here jab then that long right hand as he continues to move with intent towards Isaac Mendoza in the white
07:50So Santos just doesn't want to let a guy breathe Steve. It's that simple
07:56But he is eating a couple of hooks there
08:00Mendoza
08:02Absorbs a shot from Santos
08:05And that
08:06No knockdown, no knockdown
08:07Yes, absolutely
08:11Box wanted to hear it from Gary Ritter himself
08:14And here comes Santos trying to bury those shots to the ribs of Mendoza Mendoza in the white
08:19Americo Santos both unbeaten fighters nice double shots from Mendoza and that
08:27Rock Mendoza back
08:29Right hand by Santos to the ribs and then upstairs. How often do you see that?
08:32Santos is just given Mendoza Mendoza seems hard a minute ago when he's coming back with big count
08:39Really is and Santos with that unorthodox lead right hand a lot
08:44And there's a left crunching to the ribs right to the ribs as Santos just opens up with both guns
08:51And Steve again, I don't know how great a whack this guy has as he just takes off hard left hook from Mendoza and now it's infighting
09:03And Ritter watch warning him to watch their heads
09:05Well a few minutes ago, I said that Santos doesn't have defense in his vocabulary
09:13I think that's pretty clear right now
09:15Oh, but it's just an entertaining fight and you wonder really a guy like this who has not discovered defense
09:20He's only 21 really ever he has to or to be lethal for him in the end. He's gonna come back to bite him
09:31Red hot first round about to close
09:35Mendoza not a big puncher. That's a good thing for Santos. He'd be knocked out if Mendoza could watch
09:54We got a box, okay? We got a box. We can move and we move and we move. You're doing better when you're boxing
09:59There's no reason for staying sideways
10:02There's no reason for me to stay inside
10:06Let's box
10:07You're doing much better when you're boxing
10:09Okay? You're doing much better when you're boxing
10:12You're good? You're good?
10:14Yeah
10:15He's connected a little bit
10:16He's tired too, he's tired too
10:18Look, you have to present
10:20Adriana, you have to present all of you
10:24I love you, you have to give him everything
10:28I love you, I love you
10:29I love you, I love you
10:33Boy, they want Mendoza to put punches together but not stand in a pocket and try to trade with this guy
10:38And look at Santos, it looks like he's just gonna mug this guy in an alley as he's out first
10:44Crunching left
10:45overhand right
10:47And Santos opening fire here with everything
10:54Not only does Santos not understand the importance of defense, he doesn't have any sense of pace
11:01You know the tapes we watched of him, Steve, I saw him maybe take 30 seconds off in a fight
11:06He has been eight before several times
11:17This is scheduled for 10 but if they go with this rapid fire clip
11:22It would be a miracle
11:24Mendoza with a nice counter right hand
11:26All the body punching is being done by Santos because Mendoza can't miss Santos with his counter punches so he's not bothering to punch to the body
11:32Right but Mendoza's been eating a lot of shots upstairs as well because he's bleeding now from the left nostril
11:42This is not where they want Mendoza to be as he tries to back off the pedal
11:50Santos sinking shots home
11:55Steve's leverage is terrible at times balance is terrible too but he's rough fires and you know what as awkward as he is
12:02He makes the other guy fight his fight
12:05He's just dragged
12:07Isaac Mendoza into the kind of wall that his corner was afraid of
12:20Santos eats three shots there says bring it on
12:24That just seemed to rev him up a little more
12:26Hey duck he avoided a shot he rolled under one here comes the hook again
12:35Right hands from Santos as he is out punching Mendoza two three to one here
12:42And Santos is punching at the range he wants
12:46They're just enough distance Mendoza's not stepping inside enough
12:49Do a little holding do a little pushing on the inside
12:52He made those long arms
12:54Steve how is uh Santos open here even with all of the all of these shots there he is as well
12:58He's open all the time because every punch he throws is hard he overextends overreaches
13:05So Mendoza has to just stay composed and let him pay every time
13:09Counter every mad rush like there as now Mendoza
13:15becomes the aggressor
13:16I don't know if Mendoza can keep up the pace but every round that goes by that he's still here
13:23You have to figure his chances increase
13:26Oh there it is Santos burying that right to the ribs
13:33First round was close Nick this one wasn't big round for Santos
13:35Six furious minutes so far scheduled for 10
13:44He's still here
14:04Action from round two it was furious flush shots long shots by Santos again punching in his range there
14:12Mendoza gets a little close and Santos pushes him away
14:15When you swallow this many shots as Mendoza is doing what happens you start bleeding you start lumping up
14:21Second round was all Santos and Mendoza was huffing and puffing heavily in his corner after the first round
14:28I just wonder whose uh benefits from this pace right now with Santos
14:33You know Santos is 21 years old I see a lot of raw stuff with him Steve but in a
14:38Strange way he creates so many punching opportunities
14:42Simply because of the sheer volume of shots but it's not going to work against world-class opposition
14:47No doubt and opposition and yesterday when I said that suggested it to him he said i'm not changing my style for anybody
14:53Yeah, and what he also told us there is no such thing as too much aggression
14:58Our kind of fighter I mean you got to love it as a television fighter that's it
15:01Yeah
15:03Santos is in the black
15:05And isaac Mendoza two unbeaten junior weatherways up stepped up to this challenge knowing they could get to be main event fighters tonight on showbox
15:14risking perfect records
15:17As we hit the third round and a foul schedule for ten and moving to me is not the answer for Mendoza in the first round
15:24His feet were planted and he landed a lot of big counter hooks if he's moving he's not going to be landing that counter hook
15:32And here we see Santos getting wild and Mendoza
15:37Not reacting off of that
15:41And now Mendoza letting his hands go
15:44And if you punch enough they'll get him on the second and third try because Santos's chin is there
15:48And let's get Santos nick some credit because in the first round he got hit big shots hasn't changed his style one iota
15:59There's Mendoza
16:01On the belt line with a couple of hooks of his own look at square Santos is now
16:06Santos with that right to the body continually
16:11Just looking to open up isaac Mendoza and white
16:15And Mendoza backing off again now
16:20He writes the backing off he's a different fighter how many guys could really fight
16:25Off the back ways not many
16:28Mendoza in his own corner rubbing off the ropes here and it's Santos controlling action dictating pace
16:36start to finish
16:38And as you said controlling the range but now just standing in front and getting clipped by a combination
16:45But Mendoza not following up
16:49Well seems to me Mendoza with five KOs and 13 wins just doesn't have the pop to hurt this fighter
16:56No reason to think that America Santos doesn't have a good chin he's been hit flush in this fight
17:00I just don't think he's being hit by a fighter with a big enough shot to take advantage of all these
17:04Camel punching opportunities well it's not the split hairs though even if he doesn't have crushing power
17:09Can he discourage Santos in other ways though even with good solid counter punches that aren't going to crash land the guy well
17:16He can do that only if he sticks around long enough and does it in the second half of the fight
17:19Oh
17:37They said it would be red-hot and they have been right
17:41In fact each guy's done his homework on the other which set up the game plans
17:51I've seen some videos and uh most fighters fight him toe-to-toe and nobody's i haven't seen nobody box him and that's what i plan on doing uh
18:00To hit and move make a miss make him swing and wear himself out
18:04I've seen him fight before uh he's a good boxer he likes to move a lot mover he likes to use the ring a lot and uh
18:13well we're ready for uh cutting the ring off and
18:16doing everything we have to do to make it the smallest ring he's ever been in
18:20I think i'll tell you i i was you know we we sit here pretty close and we can tell body language pretty well
18:49the body language just before the start of this fourth round was very very telling
18:53mendoza looks like you know he's huffing and puffing in the corner a little tired
18:57santos looks like he's ready for a hundred yard dash he's just so eager to fight he's a tiger
19:05and he has been cutting the ring off and he has paid the price but maybe again steve as you said
19:10mendoza not being a hellacious puncher santos is willing to do that he's just gonna outwork this guy and
19:15it's like he's just gonna exhaust so if you if you get hit twice to give three it maybe it's okay
19:24especially if you're not getting your world rock and santos continues to press forward and there's
19:28that hook and he avoids a shot and now it's mendoza standing in the pocket and trying to slug
19:37and retreating not santos here comes the pressure
19:46steve santos said that mendoza's a guy who uses the ring well but santos is doing a better job of it
19:51well i think santos has quicker feet so he is coming off the ring and it's not easy to box against
19:56santos it is easy to counter punch but one shot every 20 20 20 25 seconds is not going to do it
20:06he said it santos in the black
20:11that left hook for mendoza was such a weapon in the first round we have not seen very many flush
20:17left hook counter punches since oh good right hands that's four that connected from mendoza
20:24and back battles americo santos in black and this is the substitute right there i mean no offense to
20:32mighty mike arnoud as we love him here at showbox but i can't picture him giving us a better fight
20:35than these guys oh and uh maybe one day they'll meet they're all unbeaten for now
20:41santos a committed body puncher he has set a blistering pace
20:53and led with his face at times left followed by a right for mendoza a solid left hook for mendoza
21:00as he retreats santos fighting with some fury now but it was a wake-up call steve that had a sting on the
21:06scene and now it's santos wanting to rumble absolutely getting the engine fired up coming
21:14after mendoza so i was wrong maybe it didn't phase him in the least i don't know what phases this guy
21:21because only he's a punch machine that's all he does he's been hit maybe eight ten times this round
21:27solidly
21:33tough round in the car steve don't underestimate those body shots of santos
21:39tough round in the car steve
21:52to the top of the car steve
21:54watch this one
21:56and keep it
21:57and keep it
21:59protect your body
22:00and keep it
22:01and keep it
22:02and keep it
22:02and keep it
22:03and keep it
22:04and keep it
22:05action from round four you wonder what it does to a fighter's confidence when you hit him with
22:24shots and all he does is smile at you and come back at you i mean clearly santos has not been
22:29hurt by these flush shots but it's so interesting you bring that up steve how many times do you say
22:36hey when a guy smiles and says you didn't hurt me he really hurt you yeah but i don't believe
22:40santos wasn't hurt you're right yep santos charges out in black and mendoza backing up again brushing
22:50the ropes trying to find the kind of comfort zone he needs and steve we hit the fifth we completed
22:57four how do you have it on your card 39 37 santos first round was very close i gave it to mendoza
23:06so mendoza definitely and clearly in this fight incapable of winning it steve yeah i mean we don't
23:12know what's going to happen in the second half of the fight in terms of this ridiculous pace santos is
23:16setting mendoza's never been 10 he's been eight or santos has never been 10 but eight three times
23:26mendoza's been 10 once break breaks the back box and it's almost what what happens first the santos
23:34burn himself out because of the pace he sets or the santos wear down his opponent because he's
23:40landing more shots and mendoza's taking shots to the body well i think the danger for santos if he
23:48gets hit too many times mendoza doesn't have to put him on his back to win a lot of rounds but
23:57santos slowing down a little bit and they're walking into another right hand
24:02he's very raw nick he really is he loads up on every shot throws punches from left field squares
24:15himself off he gets now he's only 21 no rush bad habits though that would be difficult to break steve
24:23right hand for mendoza he's gotta grab the momentum certainly break the rhythm of santos somehow and
24:30see some kind of tempo here he's never been in a position to punch when he wants to punch steve mendoza
24:39it's always got to be a reaction off santos's bull rushes
24:47well there we see mendoza making the play getting out first
24:54santos actually trying to slide under punches
24:57and now just standing in no man's land without punching before
25:01sinking that left to the ribs and now eating a left hook and return
25:08santos with 17 knockouts and 20 wins but you know what
25:12as square as he is as often as he's square he's taking away his own punching power
25:18good point and now he gets rocked a couple of times
25:21hard to know how good his chin is how good a shot mendoza is delivering as you say he's got five
25:30chaos with 13 fights with 13 wins for mendoza
25:35nice move landing for santos and then slipping under the counters
25:38and fight fans remember june 11th marks the return of mike tyson on pay-per-view
25:51you know his name
25:56you know his power
26:00but what you don't know is what will happen next there's gonna be a train wreck
26:06mike tyson versus six foot six giant kevin mcbride saturday june 11th live on pay-per-view
26:13with mike tyson anything is possible
26:27mendoza had one good moment here in round five
26:31as nick said it's always counter punching right there though he takes the initiative
26:35hasn't happened too often the fifth round was the first round of the fight though
26:38where santos actually slowed down a little bit well we see more of that second half oh man he's off
26:44his stool like 15 seconds before the bell santos so i don't know santos now blistering right
26:51overhand lead but steve i'm convinced that mendoza as we saw in that replay he's got to win some
26:57exchanges in tight as you said to win this fight he's got to stand and trade with this guy at times
27:08not much on those but they did make santos retreat and they landed so for pure volume
27:17mendoza with a nice right uppercut but doesn't follow through
27:24here comes santos hey there's a jab power punches double hook nicely from mendoza
27:32when mendoza steps to his left neck i i just don't think he's that effective when he boxes he lands
27:39when he's there when he's standing in front of his opponent and counter punching on a on a two or
27:44three levels below it's similar to what chico corrales had to do against castillo i think he has to
27:50fight the fighter i think that's his way of winning and he's doing a little better in round five and a
27:55little better in round six is the second half of the fight his he's behind he needs these rounds quick
28:01pushing with your hand so shorten up inside and stay inside and maybe trade and get this guy's
28:08attention and slow down this train that's coming at you in black but give santos a lot of credit he's
28:14never abandoned the body attack especially that left hook to the body he's told me yesterday he'd much
28:19rather score a knockout with the left hook to the body than a perfect shot to the chin in that sense
28:24he's a typical mexican fighter right you notice mendoza's trying to go to the body as well and i
28:29think he should because i think santos is open in a lot of areas but he does seem to be open down low
28:37and mendoza only five six even though the reach is close
28:44may have more luck with some body shots
28:49so he's still throwing about 100 shots around
29:04nick to me the story so far is simple you just saw mendoza land a clean right hand he's landed a lot
29:11of flush shots in this fight he's not a big enough puncher to discourage santos that's the difference
29:17santos is going nowhere but forward you're right
29:25now mendoza trying to put something together
29:29plugging combinations and now digging that right hand to the body
29:34oh good uppercut from mendoza so a pretty good round for isaac mendoza in red or in white i should say
29:47that was real good and i know you can do better than that okay i know you can do better than that
29:54okay listen to me he's blocking his punches on the body now go to the head okay go down and then go up okay
30:00don't let him try to skew the round and at the end jr
30:22early in the fight mendoza was a lot more successful than his left hook the last couple of rounds rounds
30:26five and six it's been the right hand of mendoza land is flush everything that seems to land lands
30:33flush against santos he's so wide open because he's either dropping his hands after he punches
30:38or his hands are extended because he's punching himself
30:43so we head to the seventh and as we continually say it's a frustrating thing for mendoza but he
30:50hadn't been able to discourage santos but he's clearly won some rounds he's
30:53absolutely connected solidly in this fight i gave mendoza around six i did as well
31:04nick i have santos had 58 56 four rounds to two you had mendoza winning maybe the first in this last
31:12exactly
31:18santos is in black mendoza white both unbeaten
31:25santos barreling in hands down now he's got him up a little bit
31:30wild left hook that almost hit us
31:32curious as to why santos backed up because mendoza came back with nothing
31:44now that right uppercuts landing from mendoza once again
31:49is caught a little off balance there and santos didn't seize the opportunity to jump on
31:53it's a lot less punching this round from america santos and black
31:58it's almost like he's taking time off well the funny thing is when he's not punching his defense
32:03isn't bad it's only when he's punching that he gets hit now he revs up the engine
32:12there's that right hand landing again little stuff jab to the face by mendoza
32:16santo's dictating the terms of how fast this fight's gonna go it's double speed for him or nothing
32:32the difference in power is so pronounced man yeah mendoza took those on the gloves but then
32:37santos fried those gloves apart with sheer volume punching and a nice left hook to the body
32:43so santos wakes up second half of this round
32:57now it's mendoza seems to be taking a little bit a bit of a breather
33:02santos walking in without punching
33:06this is not exactly what i beat what i call a jab fest tonight is it not too many of those
33:13the best we've seen from him in a while santos is wearing mendoza down with those body shots he's
33:25been throwing them the whole fight and they're working
33:31but i think mendoza's landed to the body as well but i don't think he's had the effect as he said he
33:36just doesn't punch as hard i'm still not convinced that santos is a
33:43maybe you know consider him a doubles hitter for now
33:48but he's excited to me you gotta work some angles baby okay i've been asking for those angles since
33:54beginning of the fight okay
33:55i want to see more speed in this round okay i'm getting give it a bit slow give me more speed okay
34:05combinations three four five sixes okay he might block one or two but you ain't gonna block
34:09the other three or four okay come on they're gonna
34:12my manos ching me i know about las manos y cabecey me okay eight round man three more rounds okay
34:20the body baby the body
34:26uh steve there's no question mendoza flat out told us and how could you argue this is obviously the
34:46biggest test of his career and it shows
34:48but americo santo senior wants his son in black to basically pump up the volume and you know nail
34:57men does it while you keep punching get him on the third and fourth try nothing about defense on
35:04watch your hands punch more and let it let that be your protection
35:11again if you drive any other guy back like that he can't punch
35:14that's it by punching so often and by punching for the body a lot
35:19santos is preventing mendoza from gaining the momentum and taking the initiative in the second
35:25half of the fight good point but mendoza shouldn't abandon the body in my opinion his
35:29corner doesn't want him to and i think he's been fairly effective there
35:32that's a pleasure in terms of gary ritter not having to break him but the action really has
35:45been wall to wall yeah has there been a clinch in the fight not that i've seen
35:55yeah i'm surprised mendoza doesn't make him pay a little there because the chin is just hanging
35:59there in the air isn't it steve it is that's been really hanging there the whole fight although
36:04again when santos isn't punching he moves his head the time to catch him is when he's punching
36:16now mendoza's doing no punching bad idea doesn't want to let any round slip away
36:21and now mendoza trying to fire back good body attack by mendoza as he pins his head to the chest of
36:33americo santos before retreating
36:40one thing mendoza's been unable to do or unwilling to do is make it an in spite and what i mean by
36:45interface i mean pinning your head on santos is just staying there right and now good right hand
36:51for mendoza but why does he back off he's tired as he eats a couple of shots another close round steve
37:00been good momentum swings in this round stop break stop stop step back step back step back
37:06mendoza busy enough though to give these rounds to get to win these rounds no i don't think so that's really
37:12been critical
37:22mendoza's been effective at times to the body again in this round
37:26but he's starting to punch in real spurts and backing off and looking slightly gassed
37:35crowd really into this another solid right hand upstairs from mendoza
37:39and santos absorbs it all oh the good right hands once twice
37:54you got to keep your hands off okay you win the last the last two minutes and then you step around
37:59and work with the jab and don't stay inside of the last 30 seconds okay you got to keep your hands up
38:03stay low man come on come on take a deep breath keep your hands up man dot don't you don't have to
38:12stay inside with this guy no more okay he's still in the rounds in the last 30 seconds you know what
38:17i mean stay low go down go down okay action from round eight the first two minutes were all americo
38:23santos look what mendoza did in the last minute steps back there that's where nick questioned why
38:31he stepped back but once he starts fighting again boy so much for my theory about uh santos moving his
38:37head when he's not punching he got hit flush you think mendoza won that round i do me too
38:43what do you have it how do you have it steve with two rounds to go 77 75 santos wow
38:53all right really gut check nobody's been had their world rocked again nobody's been on the floor
38:59they've both been in a fight it's been a great clip steve and it's a matter of you know maybe not
39:04only who wants it more they clearly both wanted but who could will themselves to keep fighting at
39:09this pace and win these last two rounds it could virtually be a toss-up on the cards although
39:14i have santos ahead as well officially now all i know is anytime santos fight whether it's showbox
39:20or anywhere else let me know about it i want to be there this guy is a rocky fighter without the
39:25choreography i mean you know his head snapping back like in the hollywood movie he's throwing a million
39:30punches father told him got to win these last two rounds
39:39so far doing a better job of it here a minute into the 19th
39:54steve nidegau with crushing power so you would have to think when they go to the cards if it does
39:59go the distance it's going to be a sheer matter of volume punching of course with the other ingredients
40:05who's controlling the flows because when they're not punching that's what things like the ring
40:11general shift you know how do you set traps for the other guy i mean i just pure out two guys coming
40:16at each other nothing too subtle about this is what i'm saying swelling under both of the eyes of
40:23mendoza but here he comes again and the only time mendoza you know one of the things to get on the ring
40:28generalship you got to force your opponent out of his game plan the only reason he only time he does
40:34that is when he really gets busy and puts these punches together like that the right hand has found
40:39a home again and again tonight box uh santos is ahead on my card because he's landed and throwing more
40:47punches that's not necessarily the case anymore he's not that's not necessarily the business
40:53busy a fighter here in round nine never thought i'd see him slow down a little bit
41:03fight is definitely winnable for both men and neither guy could know they have a safe lead
41:08certainly santos from texas and the local kid is mendoza good point and mendoza stealing this round
41:17winning that exchange in tight is what we talked about and why not when santos stops throwing this
41:24is when mendoza would seem would have to throw more and how about mendoza's composure this fight
41:32this was a big step up for both guys mendoza never brought anybody like this before and he weathered
41:37that early storm and here he is the chance to win absolutely looking good at the end of nine
41:47uh
41:51uh
41:54sit in here man sit in here

42:17Three more minutes is all your life in here, okay?
42:19Last round, last round.
42:21Remember, last 30 seconds of the round,
42:23you keep your hands up, you let your punches go,
42:25but you got to keep your hands up.
42:26That's all he's doing, try to steal the round.
42:33Keep your arms up and keep your movements.
42:35Okay, keep your movements.
42:44One to go, how do you have it, Steve?
42:4686-85, Santos, something tells me, Nick,
42:49this is going to be a 10th round to remember.
42:51I agree, it's a winnable fight for both guys,
42:53as we see Isaac Mendoza in white and in the black,
42:57Amerigo Santos, unbeaten records on the line.
43:02Anybody's fight in the 10th here.
43:05Neither guy conceivably feel they got some kind of a safe lead.
43:10Both guys may very well believe they're losing this fight.
43:14each guy.
43:17They want Mendoza to box more.
43:22But he has been effective slugging.
43:27Part of the reason Santos has eased off the pedal.
43:32Burning pace has taken a toll on him.
43:38On both men.
43:41And Mendoza certainly made Santos think twice about just walking in that way,
43:43trying to take liberties.
43:44Certainly the second half of this fight, Steve.
43:47Santos still aggressive.
43:48Not as effective.
43:49Oh, no.
43:50And Mendoza certainly made Santos think twice about just walking in that way,
43:53trying to take liberties.
43:54Certainly the second half of this fight, Steve.
43:55Santos still aggressive.
43:56Not as effective.
43:57Oh, he's getting paid.
43:58He's getting...
43:59Paying a terrible price.
44:00It may be enough to see this victory slip away from him.
44:03I wouldn't rule out a draw by anyone, Steve.
44:05Mendoza.
44:06Mendoza certainly made Santos think twice about just walking in that way,
44:10trying to take liberties.
44:11Certainly the second half of this fight, Steve.
44:14Santos still aggressive.
44:15Not as effective.
44:16Oh, he's getting paid.
44:17He's getting...
44:18Paying a terrible price.
44:21It may be enough to see this victory slip away from him.
44:26I wouldn't rule out a draw by anyone, Steve.
44:41Santos looking far less effective down the stretch.
44:45Mendoza pick those punches off with his gloves.
44:50Arm punches from Santos now.
44:52Combination from Santos.
44:59Mendoza taking a little bit of this critical tenth round off.
45:04He launches in with a left hook.
45:06Corner behind him.
45:07Will he follow up?
45:09Everybody on their feet here.
45:12Both corners, that is.
45:16Santos getting drilled here.
45:19Right hand, left hook to the ribs.
45:21And Mendoza could have battled his way back the second half.
45:28But maybe equalized this fight.
45:34Does this division ever not deliver?
45:36Now we have two guys.
45:37Even hardcore boxing fans didn't know these guys that well.
45:40They know them now.
45:41Two more names.
45:42Prospects in the junior welterweight division.
45:45Oh, this would be tough to call.
45:50Even on my card.
45:52That's why I have it.
45:53I have it even.
45:54I want to take the fight away from you.
45:55No wondering.
45:56There's no way they want to take the fight away from you.
46:00Good fight.
46:01Just a flat out good fight.
46:02Proving you don't have to knock people down necessarily to make for a good fight.
46:11Of course we would have loved a couple of those, Steve.
46:13But at the same time, highly entertaining.
46:17No stoppages of action really.
46:23Great.
46:24Great punch count.
46:26Not a mark on him.
46:43Amazing.
46:44That's flat out tension, Steve.
46:59Neither guy could put this one on the bank.
47:04Both of them knowing their perfect records are in jeopardy.
47:08But that's why they got together.
47:09That's right.
47:10Are they future contenders?
47:12Maybe.
47:13Are they pure fighters?
47:15Most definitely.
47:16Oh, yeah.
47:17Good fight to watch.
47:19There's Santos.
47:21And it's official now as we go to ring announcer Jake Gutierrez.
47:37Ladies and gentlemen, after 10 tough rounds of boxing, we go to the scorecards.
47:54We have a split decision.
47:55We have a split decision.
47:58Judge Gerald Ritter scores this bout 98-92 for Santos.
48:03Judge Peter Trematerra scores about 96-94 for Mendoza.
48:09And Judge Max DeLuca scores this bout 96-94 for the winner.
48:18By split decision, he's still undefeated.
48:22America Santos.
48:23Well, nobody could really argue with that decision.
48:37Of course, Isaac Mendoza from 75 miles away, Tulsa, Oklahoma.
48:44Big contingent here.
48:45He was the hometown fighter.
48:47And that's why the crowd is unhappy.
48:50But they loved his performance.
48:51And how interesting that one judge had a 98-92 total dominance from Santos.
49:02Hard to see it that way.
49:03Yeah.
49:04Gary Ritter gave rounds 9 and 10 to America Santos.
49:08I thought Santos clearly won the 10th round.
49:11Peter Trematerra had Mendoza sweeping the last three rounds.
49:16And Max DeLuca had Mendoza winning the last two.
49:19So he came up short on that one card.
49:2298-92.
49:23He had no chance.
49:24Just came up short on the card of Max DeLuca.
49:34Well, I hope they're calling for a rematch.
49:36I wouldn't mind seeing one, Steve.
49:38I want to assess both guys because bottom line, you come out of these fights and you say,
49:43do we want to see him again?
49:44My answer is I do.
49:45I'm not saying necessarily against each other, although that would not be a bad idea.
49:49No, a rematch would be great because certainly neither fighter proved any dominance over the other.
49:53America Santos, anytime, anywhere, call me.
49:56I'll be there.
49:57This guy, is he smooth?
49:58No.
49:59Is he polished?
50:00No.
50:01We said that in the beginning.
50:02We saw that on tape.
50:03He hasn't changed.
50:04Can he improve?
50:05Well, he is 21 years old, but his attitude is I'm going to fight this way every time.
50:07Maybe now he'll learn that this isn't necessarily the way to always win.
50:11Well, Steve, we know how power-packed this division is.
50:13We know how young these guys are.
50:15Again, Santos, 21.
50:16And now Mendoza with the first scratch on his record.
50:19Somewhat controversial.
50:21But where does he go from here?
50:22Well, Mendoza, bring him back anytime against this opponent or not.
50:28He won me over in this fight because he showed a lot of heart and he picked his spots, counterpunched well, and in the end, really, it was Mendoza.
50:37It wasn't Santos doing the punching and landing the bigger shots.
50:40He just doesn't seem to have the pop to be a big-time contender in this division.
50:44Well, before we close the show, our happiest wishes to the family of Frank Madros, his wife Holly, and their new baby boy, Frank Madros, our technical director.
50:54Not a name yet, but, you know, I'll give you a hint.
50:57Starts with an N.
50:58Wouldn't be bad.
50:59Okay.
51:00Steve wouldn't be bad either.
51:01We enjoyed it here tonight at Buffalo Run in Miami, Oklahoma.
51:05Hope to see you again on Showbox.
51:07And just to recap it in our opening bout, Alan Green dominated Rocky Smith in every phase of the game in a fight mercifully stopped because of an accidental headbutt after seven.
51:18Yeah, Rocky Green's face was a mess at the end.
51:20Alan Green very smooth-looking.
51:22He'll be a contender whether at middleweight or super middleweight.
51:25All right, the red-hot pace of a fight, our main event.
51:29Americo Santos on the right survives as he comes to the Tulsa area and shoots down Isaac Mendoza.
51:36Great smile, great style.
51:38Americo Santos, let's bring him back.
51:41Junior welterweight division has another fighter to consider.
51:46And we're back Friday, June 3rd to light the fuse on a huge weekend of boxing from Manchester, England.
51:52Two of the world's best featherweights collide.
