The Grand Fishing Adventure S02E02
Transcript
00:00You always set yourself targets and you never hit them.
00:03Right now, my target's your nose.
00:06You'll probably miss.
00:10Let's get over there, boy.
00:11Two friends.
00:13Boom.
00:13Ha, ha, look at that.
00:15On a fishing bucket list tour.
00:17Want a piece of this action, Bob?
00:19Footballing fisherman Bobby Zamora.
00:21Hey.
00:22And that's more likely.
00:23And me, Ali Hamidi.
00:25Ah, I'm an Iranian wrestler.
00:26Abracadabra.
00:28Woo.
00:29This series we're touring Spain and France.
00:32Look at that.
00:34On our greatest mission to date.
00:36Did you see that?
00:37Well done, Tesla.
00:39It won't all be plain sailing.
00:41Whoop.
00:42I'm actually scared.
00:43It's a stingray.
00:44But we will be trying to catch the biggest and best fish.
00:48What a beast, eh?
00:50What an achievement, mate.
00:51Yeah.
00:53This is the Grand Fishing Adventure.
00:56Yeah.
00:57Big golden commons.
00:58What we really expected, wouldn't it, coming to Spain?
01:00Oh.
01:01Oh.
01:02Oh.
01:03Oh.
01:04That's me.
01:05It's an adventure.
01:06It's an adventure, innit?
01:07It's an adventure, isn't it? We're getting lost in Spain. We don't know where we're going.
01:30Bob's co-pilot duties weren't the best, but to be fair, we'd had a last-minute change of location.
01:40We were in central Spain attempting to find one of the country's most famous lakes, Oriana.
01:46As we'd heard that a rare once-in-a-lifetime phenomenon was occurring there,
01:51Comizzo barbell that go missing years at a time at the lake were getting caught right now.
01:57Perfect timing. Comizzo, my childhood dream fish I'd failed to catch on our last outing to Spain.
02:04So we just had to go, and we'd finally found it.
02:09This is stunning, Bob. Look at that. Huge, huge and huge.
02:16The immense Lake Oriana, a virtual inland sea that's over 20,000 acres in size.
02:28This vast wild water is said by many to be Spain's most prestigious venue.
02:33The overall stock is largely unknown, but it is famous for huge long commons,
02:38and it boasts the Spanish record at 87 pounds.
02:42It holds gigantic Comizzo barbell to 40 pounds,
02:46but they hardly ever get caught and go missing for years on end.
02:50But they're getting caught right now in certain hot spots.
02:53A chance too good to miss.
02:56Look at this tunnel, man.
02:58This is absolutely mega.
03:00Do you know what? I've got little facts about this bridge as well.
03:02It's built by the Romans, and Caesar himself crossed the original bridge.
03:09No way.
03:11No. I have no idea, mate, because you've fully made that up.
03:14But had you had that?
03:15Fully had that.
03:16Fully had that.
03:18Hook, line and dog bone sinker.
03:21Oh, look.
03:25And half a view, mate.
03:27Right?
03:28I'll tell you what, that's half a view and that's half a view.
03:30It's beautiful, isn't it?
03:30I didn't expect to be coming here.
03:32I'm kind of secretly happy we are now.
03:34But I want to know where we're going, pal.
03:36I hope you've got some great intel,
03:38because me, I would not have a clue where to start.
03:42Of course we've got some intel, Bob,
03:43but that's where we're going to go next.
03:45We are going to get back in that beautiful red car.
03:48This is the Grand Fishing Adventure.
03:59Oh, you love me, Bob.
04:00Don't lie, you love me.
04:03We had five days and nights fishing ahead of us on this inland ocean.
04:08Our mission was to both catch a £30 plus carp,
04:11and I also desperately wanted to catch my childhood dream comizzo.
04:15Being December, this was going to be tough.
04:18Our equipment was all waiting for us at the rendezvous point,
04:22where on arrival, we set up just our bivvies to sleep,
04:25as the following day it would be all systems go to boat across to our fishing spot.
04:30The next morning, we were met with Spanish sunshine,
04:37and albeit a bit chilly.
04:39Well, it was the start of winter.
04:42With the boats packed to the hilt with gear and us totally buzzing,
04:45we set sail for our carp and comizzo mission.
04:48We were heading to a special remote spot where the comizzo were being caught from.
04:53This particular area has been producing comizzo barbel for the last week,
04:58which is so rare.
05:01And some of the Spanish anglers have been kind enough to let us come into the area
05:05to just have that one little chance of our own miracle happening.
05:10Or my miracle happening, because Bobby's caught his comizzo.
05:18Down the bank from our swim, Spanish angler David Guerrero
05:21had just caught an incredible comizzo barbel weighing 33 pounds.
05:26What's that?
05:27Talk about whet your appetite.
05:30It was now all hands on deck to get all the team's gear off the boats
05:34and to get base camp set up.
05:36We don't muck about, I can tell you.
05:38Base camp, it is out on its own.
05:44Amenities.
05:46One or two giant rocks to hide behind when you need to go.
05:50And that's about it.
05:51Embrace mother nature, Bob.
05:56Next up, rig prep.
05:58So tough, abrasion-resistant leaders to protect against the rocks.
06:02Fresh rigs were then tied.
06:04Bob was going for his tried and tested D-rigs for the carp
06:10with a sinking and buoyant boilie, known as a snowman set up
06:14as it sits on the lake bed like a snowman.
06:16My rigs were geared up for the comizzo and carp,
06:20lock hook spinner rigs and a blowback hair rig,
06:22all with tiger nut and boilie hook bait.
06:24And the added difference, I was making a mix of crushed halibut pellets.
06:29Pellet dust for PVA bags.
06:33This was put into dissolvable mesh bags which I'd attached to the hook.
06:37Apparently, all the comizzo were currently being caught this way.
06:40So when in Rome, well, when near Seville.
06:46Bob was making a free-baked carp mix of sel and isosweet boilies
06:51combined with maize and tiger nuts, hole and crush.
06:54Small scatterings to go around each rod, as recommended by the locals.
06:58With it being winter and colder water temperatures,
07:01the carp and comizzo had been pushed out into the lake and into deeper water.
07:06We were looking for depths of between 30 to 38 feet.
07:10So I found my spot.
07:11I'm just about to get my rod out.
07:13I cannot wait.
07:15Get all set up and hopefully nick a bite tonight.
07:18Zamora deployed his first rig,
07:21followed by several scoops of his ground bait mix.
07:25Back to shore to set the rods, then repeat.
07:29I had a little unexpected edge.
07:32Local angler David Guerrero, who'd caught the big comizzo,
07:35kindly came out with me to help point out some previously successful spots.
07:40You can't beat a bit of local knowledge, eh, Senor Zamora?
07:46Within an hour, all the rods were in position.
07:49Bob had three rods for carp.
07:50I had two specifically set for comizzo with the PVA bags.
07:54The third spot had a few scoops of boilies scattered, targeting the carp.
07:59The anticipation levels were at fever pitch, knowing a rod could go at any time.
08:05Although we'd been told 99% of bites had been coming at night.
08:11Most looking forward to seeing one of those huge carp on the bank.
08:14Regardless if it's me or Ali,
08:16I genuinely just want to see a big, big Spanish carp.
08:20Or even a big Spanish dog.
08:25Win it to win it.
08:27You just never know.
08:29This could be the night of that dream fish we have always hoped for.
08:34Were we in the right spot?
08:36Had we timed it right coming early winter?
08:39It was in the hands of the fish gods.
08:46Could it be?
08:48Could it be the fish I've always dreamt of catching?
08:53That had all the hallmarks of a comizzo bite.
08:57Just a couple of bleeps, then a drop back, then a couple of bleeps up.
09:03Wound it in from a long way.
09:07Getting close.
09:08It's there.
09:09Bob, you can see it.
09:11A dark shadow appeared from the murky depths.
09:16Bob, that's a comizzo.
09:18It's a comizzo.
09:20I think.
09:21Yeah.
09:23That's not, you know.
09:24That's a tench.
09:25It's a tench.
09:28Bob, it's a tench.
09:31What are the chances of that?
09:34I feel for you.
09:35It even looked like a comizzo.
09:43Oh, mate, yeah, it did.
09:44Dump.
09:44Oh.
09:45First fish from Oriana.
09:47Beggars can't be choosers.
09:48Yeah, yeah, yeah.
09:50Yeah, yeah, yeah.
09:52Anyway, I believe that is yours.
09:56Good night.
09:56I really thought it was my first ever comizzo, but this one's gone fancy dress as a tench.
10:07Anyone ever seen that meme of that guy on that Spanish TV programme that just goes,
10:13He thought it was a comizzo.
10:22He thought it was a comizzo.
10:25That one, that's me.
10:28Coming up, complete carnage in camp.
10:32No, no, no, no, no.
10:33We were in Spain at the mega lake Oriana as the elusive comizzo barbel were currently being
10:52caught there and I had my heart set on catching one.
10:55Plus, Zambo and I both wanted to catch a £30 plus carp too, but so far only I'd caught
11:01and it was a tiny tench.
11:03Me, boy, it was a comizzo.
11:08But the night was still young.
11:11Well, I'm pretty certain this is a comizzo.
11:16Let's set sail.
11:18Accompanied by Captain Zamora and the cameraman, we headed out into the black abyss as I'd get
11:24better control of the mystery fish.
11:27Nervy.
11:28I so want to get this in, whatever it is.
11:30Oh, my God.
11:32Underneath the boat.
11:33Come on, man.
11:34See you.
11:34What's that?
11:34See you, see you, see you.
11:35See you, see you.
11:35A snag?
11:36That is a massive comizzo.
11:38That's a carp.
11:39My line's snagged.
11:40Mate, yeah.
11:41It's around something now.
11:42Is it?
11:42Oh, yeah.
11:43Yeah, we're on.
11:44Just go and touch.
11:46It was utter carnage.
11:47The braided line was snagged on something but then got free.
11:52Another rarity in Oriana.
11:55I just hoped we could let it.
11:56I'm just going to lift up one.
11:58Yeah.
11:59Yeah, yeah, yeah.
12:01Yeah.
12:02Yeah.
12:02Well done, Rob.
12:03Not a comizzo.
12:05We've had a tench and a carp.
12:08But we had some boat practice.
12:10What a skipper.
12:11Cheers, Gita.
12:13Mate, well done.
12:14First carp, first tench.
12:16You're on a roll, mate.
12:17You're only missing the one thing you wanted.
12:18Once back on terra firma, I safely put the carp in a retention sling
12:24so we could have a proper look in the Spanish sunlight
12:27as dawn wasn't too far away.
12:39One in a hundred, these.
12:41One in a hundred.
12:43What?
12:43A mirror.
12:43Oriana mirror carp.
12:45Well, you're obviously all about rarity.
12:47Tench, very rare.
12:50You're after the comizzo, very rare.
12:52And one in a hundred, a mirror from Oriana.
12:56So here we go.
12:57Here is our scaly needle in a haystack.
13:01First night ever fishing on Oriana and I caught one.
13:05I'm quite happy with that.
13:07Well done, pal.
13:09Congratulations on your species hunt.
13:12The mirror was about 18 pounds.
13:17A way to go still to our 30 pound target, but very welcome indeed.
13:24We both wanted to build on the team's success,
13:27so new fresh rigs were tied with precision
13:30and all rods were deployed with supreme accuracy.
13:35The scene was ready and set for a big carp or a comizzo barbel.
13:39I know you didn't catch last night.
13:44I did catch.
13:46But did that give you confidence?
13:48No, not at all.
13:51Not at all.
13:52You're fishing for comizzo.
13:54You caught a tench.
13:55And a carp.
13:56And a carp.
13:57Do you know what, Bob?
13:57I would swap catching a comizzo tonight
14:02for you to catch a carp tonight.
14:05I would do exactly the same as well.
14:09Honestly, Bob.
14:10Yeah, honestly as well.
14:12Exactly the same.
14:13I would swap you catching a comizzo for me
14:15to catch a 70 pound carp.
14:17Well, at least he's being honest,
14:19but I was still optimistic for what the night might bring.
14:27So, a very quiet night last night.
14:43But that does mean a good night's sleep.
14:46So, every cloud has a silver lining, they say.
14:49But these clouds have a load of rain.
14:54The life and times of a fisherman.
14:58This is probably more the stereotype
15:00they imagine us living,
15:02sitting in a chair, catching nothing.
15:06The third day really dragged by
15:09with the rain not letting up
15:10and not even a bleep on any of our rods.
15:13The new chilly easterly wind and wet weather front
15:16were definitely not helping our catching cause.
15:18We decided to give this swim just one more night
15:21as we plan to move back and fish the side of the lake
15:24where the vehicles are weighted,
15:26ready for our departure,
15:27in 48 hours' time.
15:35Yet another night of no action.
15:37At least it had finally stopped raining,
15:40ready for Operation Packdown and Move Swims,
15:43but morale was still pretty low.
15:46It's deflating.
15:47Big water fishing is deflating at times.
15:49And that's just, the highs are super high
15:53and the lows are really low.
15:55An angler always leaves his rods till last
15:59and I was boating out to reel my first one in.
16:01Oh, I am away.
16:06A last gasp bite and I had to get to it sharpish.
16:11Easier said than done.
16:13Instant utter panic engulfed the whole can.
16:16Get the engine off, switch it.
16:17That's a carp.
16:20Whoa.
16:22Get a life jacket on.
16:24I've got one.
16:24It was total chaos and mayhem
16:27and a boot full of water for me.
16:29Hang on.
16:31What are the chances of this?
16:34Right, push me out.
16:37And that's why when you see a fisherman packing down,
16:40the rods are the last thing to go.
16:44Incredibly, we've got a day bite.
16:47So we're now trying to make our way out there.
16:49I'm very nervous.
16:51Come on now.
16:53Madness.
16:56I manoeuvred the boat in the direction of the fish
16:59whilst winding down as I wanted to keep a tight line
17:02and a good hook hold.
17:03We're getting close to the fish, I think, now.
17:09Feels sort of not a bad fish, either.
17:12Go on, Ale, don't mess this up.
17:14I was a nervous wreck.
17:15This fish was close to the boat, but staying deep.
17:19So I couldn't see what it was.
17:21Could it be my first comitzo or a carp over 30 pounds?
17:25Then it revealed itself.
17:27We are playing an Oriana carp.
17:30Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
17:33That's a lovely fish.
17:35Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
17:37Go on, Ale.
17:41Heart in your mouth.
17:42This is amazing, isn't it?
17:45What are the chances?
17:46Oh, he's getting ready to net it.
17:57Yes!
17:57Is it a giant comitzo?
18:00Sadly not.
18:02Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
18:04But it is a common carp.
18:06Is it a 30?
18:07It might be.
18:08OK, good.
18:09I want to see one.
18:11That's what I want to see.
18:12The big question was, had I completed the 30-pound carp mission?
18:16Either way, I was totally made up.
18:2324-9, I'm going to give it.
18:27It's an Oriana carp.
18:29Yes, mate.
18:30Listen, we take that, the way this has been going.
18:33Look at this.
18:35Spanish gold.
18:38Right there.
18:40Size completely irrelevant.
18:43All about the mayhem.
18:45Mate, all about the adventure.
18:46Absolutely.
18:47And we thought we were beaten this morning.
18:50We felt dishevelled.
18:52Bit low in morale.
18:55We were moving.
18:56And I tell you what, we are still moving, but we are buzzing.
18:59We're going with some motion in our lotion.
19:06Well done, mate.
19:07Thank you, bro.
19:08Your turn.
19:09Your turn.
19:10Coming up, a morale boost.
19:12Boosting mission for Zamo.
19:14Yes, Bob's on.
19:15We're over him.
19:16We're over him.
19:17Come on, Bob.
19:17I'm going to play as very gentle.
19:19Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
19:20Hey!
19:30Our Spanish adventure on the vast Oriana
19:33had been a bit of a grueler so far,
19:35with Bob Blanken and me managing a couple of carp,
19:38but neither over the 30-pound target,
19:41and no committal had made an appearance either.
19:46We had now moved swims to where we'd originally launched the boats at the start of the trip,
19:51a huge bay and an area the locals say the biggest carp in the lake often gets caught from.
19:57After the ag of setting up camp again, fishing could commence once more.
20:02It's all going on.
20:04It's all going on.
20:05I just want to get my rods out, have a cup of tea, close my eyes, and wake up to a screamer.
20:11Bob was looking for a spot of around 30 foot deep,
20:14where some Spanish anglers had recently been catching from.
20:17You just can't ignore local tip-offs, especially on a water of this size.
20:24If I'd never been here before and I'd just looked at this place,
20:27I'd think there's going to be a big carp lurking around here.
20:30I was sticking with my juicy PVA bags, which had worked so well for me so far,
20:36and I also threw in a couple of scoops of crushed boilies for added attraction.
20:41Beautiful.
20:42We spread out all of our rods around the area at slightly varying depths.
20:50Hopefully, at least one of them would throw up a Spanish surprise.
20:57With darkness descended and with just two nights left ahead of us,
21:01our minds wandered, as fishermen's often does.
21:04I don't know what I'm dreaming of.
21:06Maybe I'm dreaming of a freak comito in the area.
21:09Maybe I'm just dreaming of a massive carp.
21:12Either way, we have grafted.
21:20An actionless night, not even a bleep on the buzzers.
21:24To make matters worse, it was another cold, grey, dreary day
21:28to match our current mood.
21:30With Bob staring down the barrel of a blank,
21:33I'd planned a little morale-boosting trip for him.
21:36The spot of lure fishing for Xander.
21:39Oh, yeah, we're on!
21:41We're on!
21:42Oh, no!
21:43Oh!
21:44Yes, Bob's on!
21:46We're over him!
21:47We're over him!
21:48Go on, Bob!
21:49I'm going to play very gently.
21:50Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
21:51Hey!
21:52It has come alive, Alistair.
21:56Bobby's happy.
21:57Thanks for knocking that one off, pal.
21:59And then, like, what?
22:0020 seconds later, I have it.
22:02Oh, oh, oh!
22:02Oh, we got a bit of colour.
22:04Oh, it's a Xander!
22:05It's your first ever Xander!
22:08Let me get it in a net, Bob.
22:10Come on, Al!
22:10Let me get it in a net.
22:12Yay!
22:12I do like Oriana now, Al.
22:18Just not for calm.
22:20My first ever Xander.
22:22They call these the pike perch here.
22:25Thank you very much, Oriana.
22:26You're not bad at all.
22:28Ah, Bob was buzzed again catching the Xander,
22:32a packed predator that can grow to over 20 pounds here in Spain.
22:36Hey!
22:38Time for me to half-inch his pink lure.
22:41He'll never notice.
22:46Oh!
22:47Yes!
22:50Instant result.
22:52Here we go.
22:54My pink lure, that one, mate.
22:56You owe us a couple of quid.
22:58I always say with the predator,
23:00one must always kiss it on the lips.
23:05With a Xander apiece and morale boosted,
23:08time to head back to our base camp
23:10to get the carp and commitso rods out for the final night.
23:18Bob's newfound optimism gave him an idea
23:21to try and snare a last gasp carp.
23:24I'm looking for another late winner.
23:26I've done that once or twice in my life.
23:27This time, I'm flipping it on his head.
23:30I'm going with a little PVA bag,
23:32ring the changes and see if that can do the job for me.
23:37Hey!
23:38On your head, son.
23:40Rods were deployed one last time
23:42with Bob's final tweak of moving to PVA bags reap rewards.
23:46It's a big moon out there,
23:59even though you can't see it.
24:02But the old saying is,
24:04big moon,
24:05big carp.
24:06Big common carp.
24:09Was this going to be the night of Bob's big common?
24:12I was praying it was,
24:14as he really deserved it.
24:16I just hoped it happened before the heavy forecasted rain.
24:20I don't think it's the biggest,
24:27but I'm hoping it's an Oriana carp.
24:32Hey, sing it in the rain.
24:36Hey, sing it in the rain.
24:40What a glorious feeling
24:44Oriana can bring.
24:53That old saying should be big moon,
24:56baby common.
24:57Bobby!
24:59You've got the smallest
25:00in Oriana!
25:03Yay!
25:03It's not the biggest.
25:07Probably not the most beautiful,
25:09but it's an Oriana carp.
25:11That is literally
25:12the tiniest carp I've ever seen.
25:16My first ever carp from Oriana
25:18and probably the smallest in the lake.
25:20Ali showed me pictures of giants.
25:23This is what I get.
25:25Not only that,
25:26look at that weather.
25:28Still a big smile on my face, though.
25:31Bobby, you haven't blanked.
25:33Ha, ha, ha, ha!
25:40Yeah!
25:43No more fish overnight,
25:45but we felt buoyed
25:46as we prepared to head back to Blighty.
25:49We've gone through the mill here.
25:51I think we want to come back to Spain
25:53when it's that little bit warmer
25:55because we've grafted.
25:56We've been extremely unlucky with fish size,
25:59but you can't pick what picks up your bait.
26:02But what you can do
26:04is keep going
26:04and that's what we've done.
26:06But a little bit of sunshine
26:08and another return to Spain.
26:10I'm ready for that.
26:12I've never been to Spain
26:13when it's rained like this
26:14or been this windy
26:16or this cold.
26:18I'd like to come back to Spain
26:19when it's warm.
26:21This is more like it, isn't it, son?
26:41Eh?
26:42Sun?
26:44Sun?
26:44This is what you were born for, isn't it?
26:46This is what you promised me
26:47first time round.
26:49Sun.
26:50Sea.
26:51No, there's no sea.
26:52No sea, but similar to the sea.
26:54Sandy.
26:55No rocks.
26:56It was like the moon last time round.
26:58This is more like it, though.
27:00This is a change of scenery
27:01and a change in weather.
27:04Hopefully we'll get a change in fortune
27:06with a big carp for Zamo.
27:09Let's hope we've now got the weather,
27:12the location and the fish.
27:15Then it's perfect.
27:16It was late March at Oriana.
27:18We were now in the east arm of this huge venue
27:21and so were the carp.
27:23It was the shallowest area on the lake
27:25and the first spot to warm up
27:27in the spring sunshine.
27:28It was also the very place
27:30the cold-blooded carp ventured to
27:32on their annual pilgrimage
27:34as they get ready to spawn.
27:35Huge, heavy females
27:37followed by many smaller males
27:39and our eye in the sky confirmed
27:41we'd timed it perfectly.
27:43We'd already dropped our rigs on the spot.
27:46Bob was using D-rigs
27:47with two snowman setups
27:49and one with tiger nuts
27:50and I was using bloodliner noodle rigs
27:53where the hookbait sits proud,
27:55an extra visual attraction for cruising carp.
27:58I had one rod off to the left in 7 metres
28:00and two either side of a tree stump
28:02on hard gravel in 5 metres
28:04whereas Bob was spread betting
28:06on varied depths and areas to his right.
28:09As we headed towards our first evening,
28:12we were both primed, ready and hopeful
28:14of our biggest Spanish carp to date.
28:16I never thought we could come to Spain
28:18and catch as many fish as we have
28:20and not catch one over 30 pounds.
28:22So that is the bare minimum
28:24that's acceptable by us
28:25but really, with the amount of fish
28:28that are swimming around in this area,
28:30we would like to catch something bigger, of course.
28:33I'm so excited
28:35and I'm extremely confident as well.
28:37I've seen fish in my swim
28:39and that's a good, good sign.
28:42Come on the carp.
28:43No carp were caught overnight
28:59although we had heard some fish crashing
29:02a distance during the hours of darkness.
29:04The carp was still in the area.
29:06Here we are.
29:19One of my rods near the tree stump was away.
29:22I jumped into the boat Rapido
29:32to get out to the fish
29:33even at 200 yards.
29:35It felt very heavy.
29:37This puts a smile on your face, doesn't it?
29:41This could be our 30-pounder.
29:43The very first fish.
29:46What a great start that would be.
29:48After a few frantic minutes
29:49of steering with my bum
29:51and winded down to the fish,
29:52I was close to it
29:53and it still felt very heavy.
29:57What have we got?
29:58What size?
29:59Nice and slow, this fish, so far.
30:01Unless it's got weed on its head,
30:03it could be half decent.
30:05See, if he's fighting really well
30:07or he's being very tentative.
30:10Don't lose it now, Al.
30:12I was about to get my first glance.
30:17I looked.
30:18It's about I looked.
30:19Oh, no.
30:22What a chance it is.
30:24Oh, no.
30:25It was easily over 40 pounds
30:28but hooked nowhere near its mouth.
30:30Oh, right in its lateral thing, that is.
30:33So it doesn't count.
30:35Here we go.
30:36Net is in the water.
30:37Foul hooked, Bob.
30:46What?
30:47Foul hooked.
30:49Oh, no.
30:52Bob, it's probably a mid-40.
30:56Oh, no.
30:59That is a right kick in the teeth.
31:01In carp fishing, if it's not hooked in the mouth,
31:05it doesn't count.
31:06It's foul hooked.
31:07It has fed on the area,
31:08but it's been caught in one of its fins.
31:10So, sadly, the challenge lives on.
31:13LAUGHTER
31:13Damn.
31:18Adios, my friend.
31:19It was all a bit too good to be true.
31:27The sun was shining.
31:29I was out there playing this carp.
31:30It felt big.
31:32And then it just turned into a bad game show.
31:35Look what you could have won.
31:37Coming up, chaos continues on Spanish soil.
31:41He's got to buy it.
31:42He's got to buy it.
31:44It's a run's water, this Oriana, really.
31:45It was springtime,
31:59and we've returned to Oriana, Spain
32:01in the hope of catching a £30-plus carp.
32:04I've had the only bite so far
32:06resulting in a £40-plus carp,
32:08but it was foul hooked,
32:10so it didn't count.
32:11What a chance it is.
32:13Oh, no.
32:14But we had five days remaining
32:17to complete our mission.
32:19There were still many carp in the area,
32:22but they seem to be now in even shallower water,
32:24so we had a new tactical plan.
32:27We thought it'd be sensible at the beginning
32:29to fish slightly off the fish
32:31into deeper water
32:32where they're more likely
32:33to come in the hours of darkness,
32:35but you might as well get yourself
32:37straight into that shallow water.
32:38That's where they want to be this time of year.
32:40They want to be where it warms up the quickest.
32:42Get your rigs in amongst them.
32:43They're not spawning.
32:44It's not like you're fishing
32:45for spawning fish there,
32:46but your rigs are really close
32:48when they're in that warm, shallow water.
32:52No point fishing where the fish aren't,
32:55so I put two rods on them.
32:57Five of our rods were now repositioned
32:59400 metres from our bank
33:01into shallow water
33:02about a metre and a half deep,
33:04exactly where the bulk of the carp
33:06were hanging out.
33:07The afternoon passed without another bite
33:14had we missed our only chance.
33:18Was moving our rods a good idea?
33:20Were the carp more likely
33:22to feed in the shallow water?
33:24Nervy times indeed.
33:25I'd had a bite in the dead of the night
33:43and it was total confusion.
33:46There was a huge build-up of heavy weed
33:48on the line between me and the fish,
33:50so I headed out to investigate.
33:52Is that fish in the big weed bed?
33:55Has it snagged him up?
33:57I managed to free the line from the weed.
33:59Hopefully I was still connected to the fish.
34:02You don't need this at 5am.
34:04Getting wiped out by weed.
34:07I don't know,
34:08we're about to go over shallow water.
34:10I haven't got a clue where we are.
34:12There's definitely a carp on this,
34:15swimming around somewhere.
34:17Out there.
34:21We need a ferry.
34:23It was pretty close to the boat
34:25in the shallow weedy water
34:26and was about to show itself.
34:29That's quite a big fish.
34:40Yes!
34:40Well, that was a proper adventure.
34:44Must be a good fish.
34:46But it was out there long enough anyway, so...
34:49Oh, yeah, that'll do.
34:52It's a nice fish.
34:54Not as big as the one I fell hooked,
34:57but it is certainly
34:59going to tip the scales over 30 pounds.
35:04We have reached the target.
35:0736 pounds,
35:105 ounces.
35:12We have been in Spain
35:13through all manner of weather.
35:15We've finally got here
35:17with a bit of sunshine
35:18and we've caught a 30-pounder.
35:21That is a nice start.
35:22That means we just bat on from here.
35:24A great start, pal.
35:25Well done, my man.
35:27The main man alley
35:28has come up trumps.
35:30We have hit our target.
35:32We can relax,
35:33enjoy some Spanish sunshine.
35:35No,
35:36I want a 30 as well.
35:37We slinged up the carp
35:39safe and sound
35:40in readiness to admire it
35:41in the Spanish sunshine.
35:53Morning came round fast
35:55and it was time for me
35:56to retrieve the landmark carp
35:58for a closer look.
35:59This was special
36:00as it was my first
36:0230-pound-plus Spanish carp.
36:04A moment I really wanted
36:07to savour
36:08with me old mate, Zamo.
36:12A lovely carp, isn't it?
36:13Mate, that is what we've come here for.
36:15A big bar of gold.
36:17Oh, Spanish gold.
36:19Absolutely glorious-looking carp,
36:21aren't they?
36:22Big,
36:22big golden commons.
36:24What we really expected,
36:26wasn't it,
36:26coming to Spain?
36:27But we didn't expect
36:29this next bite.
36:30That's me.
36:31Oh, no.
36:32Sure enough.
36:36Vests on.
36:37Yeah,
36:38get me waders off.
36:40From total serenity
36:41to absolute mayhem
36:43in a matter of seconds,
36:44Zamo quickly secured
36:46the 30-pound carp
36:47we were about to admire
36:48as I was all systems go
36:50to get in the boat
36:50and out at the fish.
36:52Unusual, yeah?
36:53It's all go,
37:03it's all go,
37:03it's all go.
37:06It's an exciting morning.
37:07It's a great start.
37:09They like to time it,
37:11do the carp.
37:11They like to time it well.
37:12Let's get number two
37:15in the net.
37:16Then surely
37:17it's got to be my turn.
37:19Don't think
37:20we've got a big one on here.
37:22There's a lot
37:23of little carp about.
37:26I couldn't make it out
37:27in the glinting sunshine,
37:29but it looks smaller
37:29than 30 pounds.
37:37Oh, just in.
37:38Ah, another one bites the dust.
37:42Ah, do you know what?
37:42It's bigger than I thought it was.
37:44Well, it's in the net.
37:46No reaction,
37:47but we do have a
37:48bit of noise
37:50in the background now,
37:51so it's hard to hear it.
37:53Good fish out.
37:54Nah.
37:55Actually,
37:56after inspection,
37:57it suddenly seemed
37:58a lot bigger.
38:00Could be another
38:0030-pounder,
38:01that, you know.
38:04It was back to shore,
38:05but first,
38:06we needed to take a look
38:07at the 30-pounder
38:09from the early hours.
38:12Sorry, mate.
38:13Kept interrupting him,
38:15didn't we?
38:15That is more like it,
38:17Dazzler.
38:17Mate, that's why
38:18we come here.
38:19And you've got
38:20another beauty as well.
38:22I know, mate.
38:22I'm very sorry.
38:23Do you want one of these?
38:24I'd love one, mate.
38:25But listen,
38:25don't tell me
38:26you're going to take
38:26all these princesses
38:27and I'm left
38:28kissing them frogs.
38:29We ain't kissing
38:30anything at the minute.
38:31All right.
38:31Cheers.
38:34Ooh, lovely.
38:37Mwah!
38:38I was well chuffed.
38:40A massive personal achievement
38:42worth sucking up
38:43as I may not get
38:44another Spanish 30 again.
38:47But big question now
38:48was just how big
38:49is the other car?
38:50It defo felt heavier
38:52than I first thought.
38:53Surely,
38:54this couldn't go 30
38:55as well.
38:56Or could it?
38:59Ooh.
39:00It's heavier.
39:01It's heavier.
39:02That's 40.
39:03It's heavier.
39:05Dazzler.
39:0640 pound.
39:0940 pound.
39:1015 ounces.
39:11We've got a Spanish 40.
39:13Well done, my man.
39:14Brilliant.
39:17That's what we come for,
39:19Dazzler.
39:19What are you saying?
39:20Mate,
39:20I've definitely
39:21got fish envy.
39:22I am desperate
39:23for one of these.
39:24Good times.
39:27Well done, pal.
39:28Kiss, kiss.
39:29No.
39:29Kiss the fish.
39:30All right.
39:31One day.
39:33Absolutely over the moon.
39:35The target was 30 pound.
39:37He's done that.
39:38He's now done 40 pounds.
39:40Incredible.
39:42Would you,
39:43Adam and Eve,
39:44it a 40 pounder
39:45from a Spanier
39:46to say I was made up
39:48was an understatement
39:49and to think I thought
39:50it was small
39:51when I first saw it.
39:53It's easy this place,
39:55isn't it?
39:5530 tick.
39:5740 tick.
39:59Dazzler,
40:00it's over to you.
40:08It's fair to say
40:09Zamo took up the challenge.
40:12And he was out in the boat
40:15like a rat up a drainpipe
40:17for his first bite.
40:18Here we go.
40:20I am into my first fish.
40:22But was it any size?
40:24It's not one of the bigger ones,
40:26but it's a carp.
40:30Yes!
40:32Get in there.
40:34Well, it's a 20.
40:36I think he's had a 20.
40:38Can have then.
40:40Obviously,
40:4130 pound is a target.
40:42Got a bit of time.
40:44And I'm feeling confident now.
40:4510 pounds short of Bob's 30 pound mission,
40:48but twice the size
40:49of his biggest Oriana carp today.
40:52Progress.
40:54That night,
40:55I banked another banger.
40:57Yes!
40:58We will take that.
41:03So easy catching 30s at Oriana.
41:0635.10.
41:10Oh, we're away.
41:11Oh, fish.
41:13Fish on.
41:14Fish on.
41:15Which I followed up the next day
41:17with a banging common of 35 pounds.
41:22Come on, Zamo.
41:24Keep up, son.
41:25That afternoon saw the Dazzler
41:33get amongst the carp yet again.
41:35He's got a bite.
41:36He's got a bite.
41:38It's a run's water,
41:39this Oriana, really.
41:41Unbelievable.
41:42Although Bob was managing
41:43to attract all the sub-30 pound carp.
41:46Yes!
41:48Clearly distinctly average capture.
41:50It was about 25 pounds.
41:52He was getting closer,
41:54but time was running out.
41:56Fast.
42:01Do you reckon you're ever
42:02going to catch one?
42:0330-pounder from Spain.
42:05Listen, I'm confident.
42:07I'm confident.
42:07I've set myself a target,
42:08like I always do.
42:09Set yourself a target,
42:11go and smash it.
42:12And this is just another one.
42:13And I am always disappointed,
42:15as you know,
42:16if I don't ever...
42:16You were teeing me up.
42:17I was nearly going to come in there.
42:18You always set yourself targets
42:19and you never hit them.
42:22Right now,
42:25my target is your nose.
42:26You want me to hit that?
42:28Oh, that's not...
42:29You'll probably miss.
42:36Oh.
42:37Really, really want Bob
42:39to catch a 30-pounder.
42:41He deserves it.
42:42He's working so hard.
42:43Not quite as hard as I am,
42:45but he's on the right line.
42:47I want him to catch a 30.
42:48To try and give himself
42:51an extra edge,
42:52Bob had a last-ditch
42:53tactical rig twig
42:55to combat the light weed
42:56where he was now fishing,
42:58the Dazzler Bloodliner
42:59Stiff Hinge Rig.
43:01Out there,
43:02on the bar,
43:03there's just some shallow weed.
43:05Now, my rig
43:06is just going to sit
43:07just on top of that.
43:09Come along.
43:10See it.
43:11Oh,
43:11bosh.
43:12Now,
43:12Zamo's new rigs
43:15were deployed
43:16with just 24 hours
43:18remaining at Oriana.
43:20I was sitting pretty,
43:21but I knew Bob
43:22was desperate
43:23for that target carp.
43:24I was praying
