The Grand Fishing Adventure S02E04
Transcript
00:00Go on, Lukey.
00:02This is where he says, it's come off.
00:03Your hook's stuck in a rock.
00:12Let's get over there, boy.
00:13Two friends.
00:14Boom.
00:15Look at that.
00:17On a fishing bucket list tour.
00:19Want a piece of this action, Bob?
00:20Footballing fisherman Bobby Zamora.
00:23Hey.
00:24And that's more like it.
00:25And me, Ali Hamidi.
00:27I'm an Iranian wrestler.
00:28Abracadabra.
00:30Woo.
00:31This series we're touring Spain and France.
00:34Look at that.
00:36On our greatest mission to date.
00:38Did you see that?
00:39Well done, Tesla.
00:41It won't all be plain sailing.
00:43Whoop.
00:43I'm actually scared.
00:45It's a stingray.
00:46But we will be trying to catch the biggest and best fish.
00:50What a beast, eh?
00:51What an achievement, mate.
00:53Yes.
00:55This is the grand fishing adventure.
00:58Yes.
00:59Wow.
01:00That is close to the rig.
01:01Mate, that is massive.
01:02I was not expecting that.
01:04Oh, Dazzler.
01:05Oh, Dazzler.
01:06I haven't been this excited in ages.
01:10Southern France, underwater ground fishing adventure special.
01:28What are you feeling?
01:28Ooh.
01:29What are you feeling?
01:31Mate, I'm excited.
01:32It's just going to be fascinating, really, to see how those fish react.
01:35Ooh.
01:36Ooh.
01:37Ooh.
01:38Ooh.
01:39Oh, folks.
01:40You're in for a belter.
01:41We can't wait.
01:42We can't catch something.
01:43It could end up like a whole damp squid.
01:45What is a squid?
01:46What is a squid?
01:47Yeah.
01:48Don't know.
01:49It's been very exciting times and the long drive was nearly over.
01:53We were now within touching distance to our chosen venue, which was in southern France, approximately
01:59200 kilometers south of the well-known town of Bordeaux.
02:03And don't be fooled by the industrial backdrop, this lake sits in the shadow of the famous Pyrenees
02:09mountains.
02:10Bobby boy, we're going through the hallowed gates.
02:13We're either going to look like a pair of mugs, or it's going to turn out very glorious.
02:18Mate, whatever it is, we'll get some interesting content, I'm sure, underwater.
02:24We've arrived at the mighty Ictus, a French fishing holiday destination with three mega lakes,
02:35each holding huge fish.
02:38King carp to 80 pounds, koi carp to 45 pounds, and mind-blowing sturgeon, 20 varieties to over
02:47200 pounds.
02:48Insane in the membrane.
02:50Oof, oof, oof.
02:54You are going to need a gym session, mate, if we're going to end up landing some of these
02:57things that are in here.
02:58But more importantly, like, I have caught sturgeon in the past, have you ever been lucky enough
03:02to have tried?
03:03Never caught a sturgeon, mate, no.
03:04Erm, a take to the air, I would love to see that here.
03:09You love a little tail walk, don't you?
03:10Tail walk.
03:11Give us a tail walk, go on, what would you like?
03:12Go on, go on.
03:13No, no, no, come on, man.
03:14You've got to leave the ground a bit.
03:15You used to get up in the air, didn't you?
03:16Like, leap right, some aura, go on, give us one, go on.
03:19Right, let's do it.
03:20Come here, come here.
03:21Let's do it together.
03:22Ready?
03:23Ready?
03:24Sorry, pal.
03:26Referee.
03:27We'd been told the other end of the lake was the best area this time of year for sturgeon,
03:37so that's where we were heading to set up camp.
03:39I've seen this lake on the internet and I've seen some of the giants that are in here.
03:43I'm desperate to get off the mark and catch my first sturgeon.
03:46Whoop.
03:47Are you all right in there, Bob?
03:48Yeah.
03:49I've caught plenty of sturgeon before, but I'd never actually targeted them in a session.
03:55Plus, I'd never caught a big orange coey either, so I was buzzing.
03:59It wasn't too long before dark, plus our diver who'd be setting our underwater cameras wasn't
04:05flying until late at night, so although we were chomping at the bit to get fishing, we'd
04:09have to wait till the morning.
04:11Early doors, we were met with a beautiful French dawn and our rigs were ready to rock and roll.
04:26Oh, go on.
04:27You were a sturgeon in the former life, weren't you?
04:29Definitely was.
04:30You would eat that, wouldn't you?
04:32Big bit of protein all day long, big old fish.
04:35Knee down.
04:36Yeah, so protein, beefed up tackle as well.
04:38We've got like a 50 pound braided hook link on here, okay?
04:42Then we've got our super, very aggressive mechanism here that recoils, so it's set,
04:49and as soon as the fish touches that hook bait, it goes bang and sets in.
04:53So they won't like that either, right?
04:56And then we've got a nice strong leader, again, about 50 pound, okay, going to 20 pound mainline.
05:01So it's much higher than what we'd normally use for carp.
05:04So that's one rod.
05:05And then on the other rod, again, I think it's a technique they've probably not used on here before.
05:10You've got that plastic-style cage packed with paste, loads of the traction.
05:16Good that.
05:17And then a PVA stick on all of them will be threaded down.
05:20You'll know how good they are, don't we?
05:22Amazing.
05:23Well, listen, mate.
05:24Waited long enough.
05:25Let's catch some.
05:26Let's go catch some sturgeon and orange carp.
05:29Beautiful.
05:30Time for operation rig deployment.
05:34My first rod was off down to my right, pretty tight to the margin.
05:38Bob went with a little white pop-up on his first rod, down his respective margin,
05:43but a little further from the bank on a ledge.
05:46We also put two more rods out each.
05:54These were all out in the open water at varying depths.
05:57Bring on the sturgeon.
05:59Next, the exciting part, the underwater cameras.
06:04Cue our very own James Pond, AKA Luke.
06:09Look at that sturgeon.
06:13Luke swam out and carefully placed a small camera by hand,
06:17near to four of our rigs that were in shallow enough water.
06:21Top work, Pond, and good to see you left our spots.
06:24Shaken but not stirred.
06:29I'm a little bit scared.
06:30Are the fish going to react as normal?
06:33Is there going to be extra disturbance in the Walthworth diver?
06:37Only time will tell.
06:39The clock started to tick by as we nervously awaited some action.
06:57My right hand rod in the margin was getting the odd bleep.
07:02In fishing we call these liners, but what was causing it?
07:05Often it can be smaller nuisance fish or bigger fish brushing line.
07:10Well, we were about to find out as James Pond had retrieved the camera
07:14and he was about to present us with some highlights of the underwater footage.
07:18Oh, OK.
07:19Oh!
07:20Oh!
07:21Oh, Bob, look at that!
07:22Mate, that is huge.
07:23How have you...
07:24What the...
07:25Well, it's just...
07:26Mate, that is massive.
07:27Here's another clip.
07:28Oh!
07:29Oh, my God, look at this.
07:30Straight.
07:31Oh, that's eating.
07:32Oh!
07:33Wow!
07:34That is close to the rig.
07:35That is huge, mate.
07:36Honestly, the size of those sturgeon are a joke.
07:38I was not expecting that.
07:39One more.
07:40Right, let's have a look.
07:41Mate, look at his mouth going.
07:42Look at his mouth going.
07:43Look.
07:44Look at his mouth going, look.
07:45That is madness.
07:46Mate, we need to get one of them.
07:47Oh, my God, that is incredible, man, and that is just down there.
08:04Wow, I think seeing that, I've got to change the hook bait because even though I've got a lot of attraction, it's very down and they're almost like,
08:11is very down and they're almost like, they're a little bit off the bottom.
08:16So they are like a vacuum cleaner. Yeah.
08:19And my hookbait resembles a little bit like hair
08:22interwined with the carpet. OK.
08:24And I want to change it to like a biscuit that'll go shoot
08:27straight into the vacuum cleaner.
08:29In layman terms to a fisherman, that is to make it into a snowman rig.
08:33Little Pop, what do you think? Yeah, yeah, I understand it.
08:36That could do the job. That is fascinating.
08:39Yeah, mate, it's unbelievable footage. It's great to see.
08:42It's amazing being able to see those fish coming in and feeding.
08:46Bit different to the way carp feed as well.
08:48They're sort of coming in, hitting the bait and scooting straight off.
08:51So, yeah, I think they're not really picking an individual bait.
08:55They're just hoovering everything up and off they go.
08:59Time for some rig tweaks.
09:02The next challenge was to try and convert one of these sturgeon chances,
09:06a rig mechanics tweak on a couple of the rods,
09:09which would hopefully complement the sturgeon style of feeding, the trusty snowman rig.
09:14The first new rig was dropped over my right-hand margin where we'd seen all the activity.
09:28Within seconds of Luke placing the underwater camera, the sturgeon was straight on the bait.
09:34Surely it wouldn't be long to find out if the rig tweak would work.
09:38Nerve-wracking but mega exciting times.
09:41The little tweak worked.
10:02Well, it is bite time, isn't it, pal?
10:06Ah, well, I think it's felt like bite time for a while.
10:11Coming up, something's not right.
10:14Bizarre fight, mate, if I look.
10:16I don't know what it is, mate.
10:18I couldn't tell you.
10:28We were in France for an underwater special and we were first targeting sturgeon to over 200 pounds.
10:34I just hooked one after a rig change following some underwater intel.
10:39The little tweak worked.
10:41It was action stations and Zamo wasted no time in trying to get his waders on,
10:46as you need to land these beasts in the water.
10:49Bizarre fight, mate.
10:51Yeah.
10:52I was expecting a lot more runs, yeah.
10:56It's like it's just stuck to the bottom.
10:57Yeah.
10:58Maybe it's a stingray.
10:58Stingray.
11:02Oh.
11:02Oh.
11:03Oh, it's woke up.
11:05Something just didn't feel right.
11:08I don't know what it is, mate.
11:10I couldn't tell you.
11:11Then it came free.
11:13Oh, here we go.
11:14You seeing it?
11:14Look, look, look.
11:15Oh, wow, yeah.
11:17Oh, where is it?
11:18It's wrapped.
11:19No, no, no.
11:20Oh, it's around the H block.
11:23It's caught in the mouth, look.
11:24There you go.
11:26Go on, Bob.
11:27Grab its tail, sir.
11:29Wow, that's why it's got H block around it in a camera, probably.
11:33That's why it had been such a strange fight.
11:35The sturgeon had caught itself around the H block,
11:38which was a floating marker on a cord to mark the spot.
11:42In a replay, you can see the line was caught around the camera too,
11:45which must have also taken out the H block as the fish swam off.
11:50But it didn't take us long to free the sturgeon and remove the hook too.
11:55Got it.
11:55Yeah.
11:56Yeah.
11:56Whee!
12:00Look at that.
12:01A proper prehistoric zoo creature that is, Zammo, isn't it?
12:04They are actually prehistoric.
12:06They were about with the dinosaurs.
12:07Is that another weird Zammo fact?
12:09No, it is a fact.
12:10Look at that.
12:12A proper specimen.
12:14So, so pleased to be able to show you one of these.
12:17Incredible and just exhilarating.
12:19Seeing them feed underwater, getting a taste of how they're feeding
12:24and being able to make a little tweak.
12:26And it works.
12:28Great to see Ali catch a sturgeon.
12:30It's really whet my appetite.
12:32I don't really care how big, I just want to catch one myself.
12:34The first sturgeon I'd ever caught that I'd purposely targeted.
12:38Around 60 pounds and it was later identified as a Cuba sturgeon.
12:43Pomme de terre.
12:51No more action overnight and with only the daytime left to go on this lake,
12:55the number one priority was for Bob to catch his first ever sturgeon.
12:59We had a plan and it involved moving one of his rods to the right-hand hotspot.
13:04My partner in crime, share the love, show me those spots.
13:07It's all about you today, son.
13:09You are going to catch a big old sturgeon.
13:12So both the margins are yours.
13:14Let's get stuck into them.
13:15Super.
13:16Come on then.
13:18But before we could get sorted,
13:22one of his other rods was away.
13:26Oh.
13:27Just when we were about to put one of these rods from last night's ripped off.
13:35Margin's all the way.
13:36Margin's all the way.
13:39Go on, son.
13:41But then the Dazzler run into a problem.
13:44Oh.
13:44The line was solid.
13:47We feared the fish had snagged itself on a steep marginal shelf or in heavy weed.
13:52Zambo tried changing the line angle to free it, but to no avail.
13:58Time for our secret weapon, Double O Heaven.
14:02Go on, Lukey.
14:03Here we go.
14:04What's he got?
14:05What's he going to come up?
14:06This is where he says,
14:07it's come off.
14:08Your hook's stuck in a rock.
14:15Oh, here he goes.
14:15Here he goes.
14:17My heart is actually pounding a little bit.
14:19I'm a little bit nervous.
14:20Are you nervous?
14:20Yeah, I am.
14:21Are you?
14:25Still on?
14:25I think it's free now.
14:29Oh, you're back on, Bob.
14:30You're back on.
14:31It's in close.
14:35Go on, the Dazzler.
14:36Top work from Luke.
14:37The sturgeon was now nearly ours.
14:41I'm just going to scoop it in now.
14:43Till it's how it walks into my face.
14:46Well done, Bob.
14:48My first sturgeon.
14:52How about that?
14:54Absolutely buzzing.
14:55No idea what variety it is.
14:59Buzzing.
14:59Get in there.
15:02It turned out to be a Danube sturgeon.
15:05We estimated it was between 30 to 40 pounds.
15:13Time was now virtually up on the sturgeon mission,
15:16but just enough remain for Bob to get a rod on the margin spot
15:19I'd been fishing and where we'd seen the majority of the underwater action.
15:23Could we winkle one more hour?
15:41Whoa, there it goes.
15:41Yeah, beer on.
15:44Here we go.
15:45A short, intense battle and the sturgeon was in very close.
15:49Coming to you, huh?
15:50Yeah.
15:51Here it comes.
15:51Oh, it's a long nose.
15:53Oh, it's head-bited the floor.
15:56Oh, that is quite big actually, Bob.
15:57I'm bullying, I'm bullying, I'm bullying for you.
16:00About 60 pounds of solid sturgeon.
16:02Yay!
16:04Well done, Bobby!
16:06Amazing, mate.
16:08Buzzing.
16:09We're going to head to the carp lake with wind in our...
16:12Sails?
16:13Biceps.
16:14Biceps.
16:15The underwater footage was amazing.
16:22Helped us make adjustments.
16:23We both caught.
16:24Mission accomplished.
16:26On to the next.
16:27A beautiful Siberian sturgeon.
16:30A mega fish.
16:31What a result.
16:32We came for some sturgeon.
16:34We caught them very quickly, which has bought us a bit of time to head on to the car plate.
16:39Never caught that little dream orange koi, but at the same time, none ever actually fed on the spot.
16:44Because we had some underwater footage to prove it.
16:50Top angling partner, now for the main event.
16:53And we didn't have to travel far.
17:00The epic carp lake.
17:01A 35 hectare water with varying depths of 3 to 33 feet.
17:07With tree-lined margins and a bottom like an egg box in places.
17:11With multiple bars, humps and bumps all over the lake.
17:14As features go, a carp anglers dream.
17:19The stock too was also pretty mind-blowing.
17:22Ahead of around a thousand carp from stockies of 20 to 30 pounds.
17:26With over 200 carp over 40 pounds.
17:29Including multiple 50s, 60s, 70s.
17:32With one beast that has tipped the scales at an eye-watering 84 pounds.
17:40The team mission is a 40 plus carp.
17:42For me, obviously got my personal best.
17:4463.
17:45Can I beat it?
17:46There's fish in here that can do that for sure.
17:48We had five days on this lake with a mission of catching a carp of 40 pounds or more.
17:55And our eye in the sky had already located a decent head of carp along a tree-lined margin
18:00between swims 5 and 6.
18:02Luke, our underwater diver, also went in stealthily with a camera to take a closer look subsurface.
18:08And the footage was pretty amazing.
18:11Some smaller stockies, but also one or two chunks estimated at 50 to 60 pounds.
18:21Hey, Bob, that's a joke over there.
18:24There's some big ones there, mate.
18:25We can't ignore that.
18:27We can't be turning down the opportunity to catch 60s, surely.
18:30But that's a one-rod spot.
18:31So, me being me, I think you should go in there and fish that spot.
18:37Mate, to be honest, I'm happy.
18:39I'm on cloud nine still from the sturgeon, so I don't mind if you want to jump in there, really.
18:42No, no, no.
18:43I really think you should go for them.
18:45OK, thanks.
18:46Cheers.
18:50The big question was, would the carp stay there?
18:53In late spring, they do tend to move around lots,
18:56so the Dazzler would need to concentrate and get the rod in position ASAP.
19:06One for the rig.
19:07Very funny, Zamo.
19:10Now focus.
19:11He was using a snowman setup, the same as we used on the sturgeon lake,
19:15a bait orb filled with paste, topped with a fruity pop-up boilie,
19:19then boilies, worms and tigers as free bait.
19:22Rawr!
19:23All of which were deployed using the bait boat.
19:27Rather than going right under the tree snag, as that could cause problems,
19:30he found a clear spot a metre or so off it, and the rig was dropped.
19:42With the rig now out, Luke wasted no time positioning two underwater cameras,
19:47both pointing at Bob's rig, but already we could see there were far less carp in the area.
19:52Out in front of swim six was open water of about 30 feet.
20:02Not to miss a fishing opportunity, I decided to put on two zig rigs,
20:06floating plastic bugs that would sit just under the surface,
20:09to hopefully trick a cruising carp in the upper layers.
20:12Bob and I were sharing the rod pod, him on the left with my two on the right.
20:16No cameras on my rods though, as the rigs were sitting too deep,
20:19but at least we could keep an eye on Bob's spot.
20:22And these carp looked like they could be on the move.
20:29A couple of hours passed by without a single bleep on any of the rods.
20:36Then suddenly we started spotting carp, but on the other side of the lake.
20:40Oh, look!
20:44That is so typical.
20:46You set up one place and then, lo and behold, they're all jumping somewhere else.
20:51Well, it feels like all of them.
20:53We presume that the bulk of the carp had moved out from the tree snag
20:57and were now out in front of Swim Nine opposite,
21:00one of the only areas on the lake that was line-free with no anglers.
21:04Bob, in this type of situation, I believe patience is a virtue.
21:08Sit on your hands.
21:10Oh, come on, wind them in!
21:11Let's get over there, boy!
21:16Coming up, some gold underwater intel.
21:19Ooh, carp!
21:21Now you're talking.
21:22That's a big one, isn't it?
21:23Look at the size of that!
21:25We were in south-west France with a mission to catch a 40-pound-plus carp,
21:37some of which we'd already spotted on our underwater cameras,
21:41and we were about to move swims after seeing carp boshing in front of Swim Nine, which was free.
21:46Time was of the essence as only a few hours of light were left.
21:50Q, operation. Rapido setup.
22:01We've done it. That was quick, wasn't it?
22:03Sharp, sharp, sharp. Are you feeling sharp?
22:06Sharp, sharp!
22:07Let's go. Come on.
22:08Hey, Rogs, in we go!
22:11This time, I had the choice of sides.
22:13Earlier, Luke the diver had checked out the tree line on the left-hand margin,
22:17positioned the camera, and scattered some bait.
22:21The footage revealed a few large carp in the area, and they were feeding.
22:25So a no-brainer, I went for the left. It not only had a margin with carp present,
22:30but also several bars a little further out. So I put out two rigs, one tight to a tree line at
22:37a depth of around nine feet, and the second on a plateau in six foot.
22:44Bob had open water out in front of him with a large bar off to the right with depths of around
22:50seven foot. So he put one rig on the bar, with the other just off it in much deeper water of around
22:5925 feet. It wasn't long before all four of our rods were in position, just as the light levels started
23:06to fade. During the day, the carp had been active in the upper layers. The big question, would they
23:13drop down and feed, as it called?
23:30It was the rig close to the marginal snags, and the carp was trying its best to get in them.
23:37Wow, we just give that some absolute beasting to get it out of them trees.
23:43Ooh, first evening, in the swim. Oh, we are in. Oh, right, okay. Relax, you got it out.
23:52How does it feel, pal? It feels all right, Bob. Actually feels all right.
23:57Fighting well. Yeah, I'm not expecting a 20-pounder to pop up. Put it that way.
24:01Come on. What a cracking trip we're having so far. We just need a carp to get us off the mark on here,
24:08and we are flying. Bobby's got some lighting for us. Doesn't like the torch. Doesn't like the light
24:16on it. Camera's shy. It put in a good fight, but would it meet our mission weight of 40 pounds plus?
24:24We're off the mark. We're off the mark. Is it 40 pounds? Oh, I don't know. I think it's mid to upper 30,
24:43personally. Less than I thought. What? Room for improvement. 31.15. Oh. Good opener.
24:51Well, congratulations, pal. Good opener. Good man. Good anglers.
24:57Oh, that's an absolute pearl. I bet that's whet your appetite, innit? Yeah, definitely, mate.
25:03One hell of a start, pal. So, well done. Long mate, continue.
25:07Four full days ahead of us. Let's hope this start was a sign of good things to come.
25:24Nothing more during the night, and the following day was uber high pressure.
25:29Clear skies are mega hot, disastrous conditions for catching carp. We could see plenty of them
25:35in the upper layers enjoying the sunshine, which was quite away from our rigs.
25:41The rods had been out in the swim for almost 24 hours, so time to review the underwater footage
25:47to see what had been going on. This is the spot that I caught the carp off.
25:53So, let's see what has happened, because I have no idea. So, it's carp CCTV.
26:01Oh, Terry the Tinker. Ooh. Ooh. Carp. Now you're talking. Look, that's a big one, innit?
26:09Look at the size of that. That's good. Oh, that spooks away.
26:13Oh, yeah. He didn't like something. Look at how much it's moved the rig, look.
26:17Oh, wow. And how much bait it's moved. Now, this is your spot. Whitehook bait.
26:25Not much fish. Is this a still, or is this an action film? Because there's not a lot going on here.
26:30Looks like a still. Do you like having Luke here with this added element?
26:36Well, it's a good insight, but it also adds to the frustration.
26:42They're definitely in the area, aren't they? Well, we see them about.
26:44So, yeah, they're certainly not feeding in this particular location.
26:48So, it's out of us. Is that a congoreal?
26:50Because you are deep enough to catch a congoreal, aren't you?
26:52Not on this one. Not on this one.
26:55He's on the shelf.
26:57Only joking, it's not really there.
26:59The fish are in our swim. They're just really, really not interested in eating.
27:04They're in that upper layer of the water. We can see them on the drone.
27:06They're just enjoying the sunshine.
27:08Something has to change.
27:09Hopefully, the weather changes, forces them down,
27:12and then we've got a little bit more of a chance.
27:15The rest of the day passed by without even a sniff of a bite,
27:18and we both even put out a third rod to up our chances.
27:22We were now putting our faith into a night bite.
27:34The cooler temperatures overnight didn't spur the carp into feeding on our spots,
27:42and again, we were faced with tough fishing conditions once more.
27:46The 40 pound target was now feeling a mega hard task,
27:50as our morale had dropped pretty significantly.
27:53Bob tried going super long with his third rod to the swim boundary,
27:57where we could see carp on the drone.
28:01And I tried worms as a hook bait, usually irresistible to carp,
28:05even in tricky times, but only Terry the Terrapin seemed interested.
28:09But there was a glimmer of hope.
28:11A big weather front was due overnight, and the wind was already starting to pick up.
28:16The weather is due to change today. We are getting a little bit of a breeze, shall we say,
28:25hopefully a gust, coming into rain, and bring on the fish.
28:39But the night brought us nothing, and just 48 hours remained on the carp lake.
28:44At first light before the underwater cameras were in position,
28:52Zamo was finally away.
29:01There is a god.
29:06I'm going to play this so tentatively.
29:12Today's a good day, Bob.
29:14Come on, what's this going to be down here?
29:16What's this going to be?
29:19I have seen it. I can confirm a sighting.
29:22It is a Cyprius Carpio, and it is yours, Bobby.
29:25And it's quite chunky.
29:28I think that's definitely a 40-pounder.
29:32I think it's definitely 40, Bob.
29:34The Dazzler was now in serious mode, as he knew this could be target complete.
29:39Go on, little turn of the head, little turn of the head.
29:47Hey, Spotby, you're off the mark, my old darcher.
29:51No blag, blagsaber.
29:53Yeah, someone's happy.
29:57Get in there.
29:59Come on, then.
29:59What have we got?
30:02Had he done it?
30:03Was it over 40?
30:05It was going to be very close, indeed.
30:07I'm going to call it 41.5, because it's going 41 to, you know,
30:24you're just not as strong as you used to be.
30:25Oh, well done, son!
30:27Yay!
30:28Mission accomplished!
30:30Accomplished.
30:31Oh, brilliant.
30:32And he took us two carp.
30:33Yeah.
30:34Ah, easy.
30:36Only need one shot, one goal, one fish, one 40-pounder.
30:41Job done.
30:43Yes!
30:45Are you happy now?
30:45Mate, really happy now.
30:47Sturgeon, tick, 40-pounder, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick.
30:51Boom!
30:53Ha-ha!
30:55What a result.
30:56The weather change had played its part, and Zamo converted the chance.
31:01With just over 24 hours to go, could we score again?
31:07Now that I've had the 40, the dream, obviously, is to beat my PB.
31:11My French PB is 63 pounds, and there's a good number of fish in here that can beat that.
31:17No more carp were caught over the next six hours,
31:20so he took the opportunity to find out what had been happening subsurface on Bob's spot,
31:25which a few days ago was void of carp.
31:30Right.
31:31Ready?
31:32Yeah.
31:33Clip one, Roberto.
31:35Look at the size of that.
31:38And?
31:39And it's eating.
31:41That is spectacular.
31:43Look at that.
31:46Look, it's sitting with its belly to the floor, chewing.
31:50It's chewing its food because it's an old, fat carp.
31:53That is an absolute dinner plate and a half, isn't it?
31:56Look at the shoulders on it, Bob.
31:57If that came up to the surface...
31:59Oh, we would be screaming.
32:01Just the shoulders alone.
32:03Insane.
32:04Next.
32:05Oh, it's back.
32:06Is that the same one?
32:07Oh, my God.
32:07That's your hook bait, Bob.
32:09Did you see that?
32:09Go back.
32:10Let's have an action replay.
32:12Dazzler, it's touched your hook bait.
32:14Oh, it's missed it by...
32:15It's mouthed it.
32:17By millimetres.
32:18Well, it's literally mouthed it, but not taken it in.
32:22Are you feeling good?
32:23I'm a hell of a lot more positive than I was a few days ago, that's for sure.
32:26When we reviewed the camera, not a single fish in sight.
32:30Nothing.
32:31Not even in the distance.
32:32So this is very different.
32:34Oh, Bob.
32:36This is a lot of activity.
32:37Is that the same fish?
32:39It's a different chunk.
32:41Look at that one.
32:42That's eating back of spot.
32:45Bob, you've got tanks, mate.
32:46This is like a military scene.
32:48That is huge, mate.
32:50That is 60 plus.
32:51So this was an hour ago.
32:54So they're still in the area.
32:55My hook bait's still out there and I'm still in with a chance.
32:59I think the great thing with the weather change was to actually see fish
33:02going to the bottom and eating something.
33:04That gives you hope.
33:05The fish are eating.
33:07When they're eating, you've got half a chance.
33:09Well, there are a couple of fish in there that I think were over 60 pounds.
33:12So, so close to my PB.
33:14Maybe bigger.
33:15Maybe smaller.
33:17But they're there and they're feeding.
33:19It's nervous times here.
33:21Not long to go.
33:22So, can we squeeze one more in?
33:25The dream of catching a carp on an underwater camera was also at the forefront of our minds, too.
33:31But that could only happen during the hours of light, which would have to wait for tomorrow.
33:36In the meantime, would our last night in France bring an even bigger stamp of carp?
33:41A cheeky French rascal that took me on a midnight boat trip.
33:59Meaning we'd now had a 20, 30 and 40 pounder.
34:04Now, where was that 50?
34:05A cheeky French rascal.
34:11Go after it.
34:12Jeez.
34:18I've got to land this fish.
34:20I was just a bit astonished.
34:25I'm kicking that.
34:28Yes.
34:30Don't say that too loudly.
34:31I might wake someone.
34:32That, I think, might do us 50.
34:39About an hour till sunlight.
34:41So, we'll put this in the sack and have a proper look when the sun's out.
34:46Talk about playing it cool, Rodders.
34:49That looks massive.
34:51Or am I still dreaming?
34:53Coming up, could this be the greatest ending ever?
34:56I have to wind us underwater.
34:58Oh, God, this is too much stress.
35:10During our final night in France, a stealthy Bob banked yet another banger.
35:15Yes.
35:16I'm going to say it too loudly.
35:17I might wake someone.
35:19Apparently, it was close to the 50 pound barrier.
35:23Well, we're about to find out.
35:28Oh, yeah.
35:29You've smashed it, Bob.
35:3054.
35:33Six.
35:34Call it 54.
35:35Six.
35:35Well done, Tesla.
35:36Lovely.
35:37Absolutely brilliant, mate.
35:40Super, pal.
35:41Absolute.
35:41What a carp.
35:43Wowzers.
35:45A 50 pounder, mate.
35:46So, we've had a 20, a 30, a 40, and a 50.
35:50Have we got time for a 60?
35:56Dasler, what an achievement, mate.
35:58That is brilliant.
36:00You buzzing?
36:01Absolutely banging, mate.
36:02Absolutely buzzing.
36:03A little bit of a condition change.
36:05And this is the result.
36:07Brilliant.
36:08Yeah.
36:09Come on, Bobby.
36:10Give him some yes.
36:11Yeah.
36:11Yeah.
36:12Yeah.
36:12Yeah.
36:13Yeah.
36:15That's an absolute ground fishing adventure monster.
36:18Call you a big cheese.
36:20Got to call him, like, the silent assassin,
36:22because this morning I woke up, I had no idea whatsoever
36:27that Bobby had caught an absolute leviathan.
36:31A stark contrast from what we saw at the start.
36:34No fish in the swim, then to fish feeding in the swim,
36:38resulting ultimately in that huge 54 pound mirror carp.
36:43Patience is a virtue.
36:45It certainly is.
36:47And if he'd not stuck with his spots,
36:49then this brute of a carp surely wouldn't have graced his net.
36:52Thank the Lord for underwater intel.
36:55Wish we could have a diver every trip, eh, Zamo?
36:58And just look at that for a Tina Turner.
37:01That's slang for a returner, by the way.
37:04Spectacular.
37:05What an incredible carp Bobby has caught.
37:08Exactly why thousands of people come to France for carp fishing.
37:13But with that underwater footage, we know there's even bigger ones out there.
37:18You know, he's been seconds, millimetres away from catching
37:23probably his personal best from France.
37:24But that PB dream was still alive as we had just a few hours left.
37:31The rods were out.
37:32The underwater cameras were in position.
37:34Could we manage an injury-timed golden goal with an even bigger monster all captured on camera?
37:41Come on, the carp gods!
37:43Then, out of the abyss, near Bobby's spot came a shape.
37:55A carp.
37:56A huge carp.
38:00Was our ultimate ending about to play out?
38:03Oh, that's a...
38:20That's the right that's underwater.
38:22Come on, you beauty.
38:26This was the moment we'd dreamt of.
38:28Oh, Bob, mate.
38:32I'm gonna land in there.
38:33Oh, God, this is too much stress for one trip.
38:37Whatever happened, we just had to land it.
38:39So we took no chances and got in the boat and out to the fish ASAP.
38:44This was Bob's rod on the end of the bar where we'd seen the 60 pound plus carp the day before.
38:50There were plenty of underwater snags between us and the carp.
38:54So we wanted to get over the top of the fish to stand the best chance of landing it.
38:58A proper heart-in-the-mouth moment for us both.
39:02Luke the diver followed us out too to see if he could film the fish underwater during the battle.
39:09What a bite.
39:10Just shredder.
39:11Yeah.
39:13Oh.
39:13No, no, no.
39:14Oh, it popped off a line.
39:15We thought it was gone as Bob's line had pinged off something,
39:18but the carp was still on.
39:20Steady, Zambo.
39:21It snags central down there.
39:23Luke was nearly at the boat, so that would give us an extra underwater angle.
39:28You're constantly feeling it going over lines or rocks or trees.
39:33It's interesting.
39:36No, it's nerve-wracking.
39:38I was trying to keep calm as this was showing all the signs of a real biggun,
39:43but I was a nervous wreck myself.
39:45Oh, I see something.
39:46Oh.
39:47That is big, Bob.
39:49That is massive, mate.
39:51Mate, I saw some size.
39:53I think I saw some size.
39:55Stop letting your tip go slack.
39:56You'll make it, you'll go.
39:57Oh.
39:58Oh, it's there.
39:59It's there, right underneath now.
40:02Oh, my God.
40:04Directly below us now.
40:06This was the vital part of the fight with the carp on a short line directly by the boat.
40:12One wrong move could end in disaster.
40:14Bob had to play this potential PB Buster to perfection.
40:19This was the do-or-die moment.
40:21Our World Cup winner was now in Bob's hands.
40:25That is massive, isn't it?
40:29That is a serious, serious carp Bob is playing.
40:34This could be your PB, Bob.
40:37This could be your PB from France.
40:40Oh, here it comes.
40:41The size of that thing.
40:50Are you nervous a bit?
40:51Oh.
40:52It's flicked off its feet.
40:53It's flicking.
40:54Just.
40:56Right, it's going to breathe.
40:57Here we go.
40:57Get ready.
40:58Get ready.
40:58I'm keeping the tension.
40:59Go on now, go on now, go on now.
41:01Yes!
41:02Yes!
41:03Look at the size of it.
41:04Aye!
41:05Yeah!
41:06Go on, Loki, Bob.
41:08Yes!
41:09Yes!
41:09That is a cheese, man.
41:19Look at that.
41:20No way.
41:26Get in there, lads.
41:30You're going to finally give me a kiss.
41:33I've got a kiss off, Bobby.
41:34Times are good, man.
41:39Unbelievable.
41:40The butterflies.
41:42I haven't had butterflies like that since walking out playing for England.
41:47God's honest truth.
41:51He was crying out in the lake.
41:52I want to cry now.
41:53It's just the best, best fishing moment I've ever experienced.
41:58We just made carp fishing history.
42:04There's no one's caught a carp that big on an underwater camera.
42:07A truly unbelievable moment, but was it about to get even better?
42:12Would history be made again?
42:15Was this carp Sammo's new French PB or could it even be his biggest carp of all time?
42:21We were about to find out.
42:23Here we go.
42:25Bobby, I think you have just smashed your French PB would be my guess.
42:34I've seen some big carp.
42:37This has got it all.
42:39Right.
42:39I don't want you to see this.
42:42Hang it.
42:45Let go.
42:45Let go.
42:47Let go.
42:52Tell me, mate.
42:54Bobby Dazzler, what was your PB globally?
42:57£68.
42:58Bobby Dazzler, come here.
43:00I would like you to look at the scales.
43:03Well done.
43:03You have just smashed your PB.
43:10Oh, amazing.
43:11I never thought I'd get one kiss from Bobby Zamora, but to get two in the space of 35 minutes,
43:21this is a magnificent moment.
43:22Mate, let's get her in that sleep, isn't it?
43:24Take your sunglasses off.
43:25I want to see you crying.
43:26Oh, man.
43:28Ready?
43:28Three, two, one.
43:30Oh, my God, Bob.
43:32Absolutely over the moon.
43:33A struggle at the start.
43:34We went 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, now 60s to absolutely cap it off.
43:43Mate, you couldn't ride this.
43:44You really, really couldn't ride this.
43:47Absolutely unbelievable.
43:50Look at the head on it.
43:51The head.
43:52I haven't even caught this bobbin.
43:54I'd say this is the greatest fishing moment that I've ever experienced.
43:58As a carp angler, this is what it's all about, mate.
44:02In the middle of the day, bright sunshine, southwest France.
44:06What a trip, mate.
44:08Well done.
44:09Well done.
44:11The biggest carp I have ever, ever caught in my life.
44:14I mean, just holding that thing up, it was so hard.
44:1869 pounds, eight ounces of absolute ginormous mirror carp.
44:25The ultimate end we could have ever dreamt of was to catch our biggest fish of the trip
44:30underwater.
44:32And that happened.
44:32That really happened.
44:34And it was a fish beyond our wildest dreams.
44:37We never expected something like that to happen, but it did.
44:46Just been a crazy week.
44:47And just how it's all come to an end now with this last fish being 69 pounds.
44:54And my new PB, I mean, really, really, genuinely couldn't write a better script.
45:00Oh, there's your script, lad.
45:06Don't waste it.
45:10Don't drink alcohol at home, kids.
45:13Thank you very much.
45:13That's in my eyeball.
45:17All that was left to do was release the incredible creature back to where it belonged.
45:22A true grand fishing adventure that we'll never, ever forget.
45:26Thank you, France.
45:27We've loved it.
45:28And well done to Luke, our diver.
45:30And, of course, that grand fromage of a carp.
45:33Sweet Caroline
45:36The times never seemed so good
45:42I have been inclined
45:47To believe they never won
45:53But now I
45:56Look at the night
45:58And it don't seem so lonely
46:03We believe
46:05We believe
