We went out into Manchester to ask people on the street whether they still have a landline in their home and, if not, about what tech that we use now that will be next on the proverbial scrapheap.

00:00Hello and welcome to Manchester World. My name is Theo Houston-Bert and today I'm out in Manchester asking people about landlines.
00:05And that's because while they were once the main way that people would be able to communicate with each other,
00:09they've now gone out of fashion to such an extent that many houses now don't even have landlines.
00:14Mine certainly doesn't.
00:15We want to know if people miss them and if there's any other old technology that they'd like to see brought back into common use.
00:21My parents have got one. I don't think I've got one anymore.
00:24There's random people calling you now. So you just turn them off, don't you? You don't get that as much in your mobile.
00:30Well, it's nothing like you get that fair bit on the old mobile.
00:32No, but it's not to the level there. You get like six or seven calls in there.
00:35All we use the landline for now is for my granddad to call us because he's just not too keen of his mobile at this point.
00:41But I mean, you know, I reckon there's still a purpose for them, but I think for the most part, yeah, people are just chucking them around now, aren't they?
00:47The landline is a symbol of the past. I think get rid of it as soon as possible.
00:53To be fair, my grandparents still use a fax machine. Yeah, so maybe that, but other than that, I won't be able to tell you.
