We went out into the streets of Manchester to ask people about their walks in the dark. Whether they’d feel comfortable walking late in Manchester or if they feel the need to call friends to feel safe.

00:00Hello and welcome to Manchester World, my name's Theo Kusinvett and today we're going to be talking
00:03about walking at night and how to feel safer. A company called Strut Safe that has a helpline
00:09for those walking through the streets at night have reported an increase in calls over recent
00:13months. We want to know if people in Manchester have noticed an increase in them feeling a bit
00:17more uncomfortable when they're walking around at night and what they do to feel safe. I think
00:21for me personally I don't do it by myself, it's like that. I normally have to have someone with
00:28me for, yeah, I haven't really done it much by myself. So I've got a friend here and he
00:34regularly contacts Strut Safe when he's walking home at night and, you know, I feel like it really
00:40gives him a sense of, you know, safety. You'll walk past groups of people that are like drunk
00:45or rowdy. I phone my boyfriend quite a lot to just have someone on the end of the line at least
00:54in case anything like out of hand happens. Got someone that knows where you are.
