00:00This time, on the highway through hell...
00:025-4 to 1-5-0.
00:04Heavy rescue is swamped with wrecks.
00:06Holy moly. I'm so tired, I got the shakes.
00:09To keep up, Jamie brings in a rookie driver.
00:12Chain's too long.
00:16Just hope he doesn't wreck nothing.
00:18But there's no room for green in a whiteout.
00:20I don't know what he's thinking.
00:22Man.
00:23A deadly wreck.
00:24Highways doesn't want us on the highway right now.
00:26He doesn't want anything interfering with these lower wires.
00:29The fire pushes Jamie's team to the breaking point.
00:35In British Columbia's rugged mountains,
00:37there's a highway like no other.
00:39The Coca-Cola is an engineering marvel.
00:43But when the weather turns bad...
00:45Let out!
00:46It's like the Bermuda Triangle of truck accidents.
00:49Keeping the Coke open takes an army.
00:52When the highway shuts down, the world shuts down.
00:54And a last line of defense.
00:56Army.
00:57A heavy rescue team ready to tackle any disaster.
01:01Because here, closure is not an option.
01:05It is not a good solution.
01:06Any harm that ë§Œë“ a machine is an option.

01:32It's high season on the coke, and Jamie's crew is knee-deep in wrecks.
01:58We were very busy. Job after job after job, the guys were all maxed out on hours, they're
02:07all tired and grumpy. I'm so tired, I got the shakes. Yeah, me too. Mentally drained, physically
02:14drained. No sleep three, four days in a row. These guys have to be mentally strong, they
02:21have to be physically strong, they have to have the stamina to go.
02:25But even Jamie knows he needs more manpower. When we're busy, I need to have extra guys
02:32on. To take on some of the smaller jobs, the boss has brought on a rookie driver, Rob.
02:40This is my first time working in his tow truck, so this is all new to me and something different
02:45every day. I'd love to be able to upgrade to a big heavy rack eventually, but I gotta start
02:51at the bottom and work my way up and eventually do it. I mean, that's what my goal is.
02:57You don't get to be the top guy overnight. You know, it takes time. There's more failures
03:04than there is success stories in this business. Time will tell, I guess, if he makes it or
03:09breaks it here.
03:12Tire chains for that truck. Today, Kevin's giving Rob a lesson in chaining up.
03:19You're the guy helping the helpless, right? But if we're not prepared and our chains are
03:25up, we can't help the person in trouble. So, we're gonna put this chain on.
03:30Okay. Oh yeah, chaining. I know chaining. Like, I mean, I've done it. It's just, I don't like it.
03:37You're already putting it on wrong. I can't get the third one with that bolt.
03:41Can you get it? Reaching back.
03:44Too many cheeseburgers. I had one. That was it today.
03:48That's all I eat. That's all I eat in all day. How did I know that?
03:53That's pretty good. And that's how you put chains on.
03:57So...
04:00That's the easy way. Yeah. Snowstorm's the hard way.
04:08Two days later, Rob gets his first big solo job. A major rollover in a ravine.
04:16This is my first one like this. I've done three rollovers, but not like this.
04:21Most of the other ones were on upper level, side of the road. It's not so bad.
04:27Not confident he knows how to handle it. Rob calls in backup.
04:32Rob hasn't had much opportunity really to even go on these types of jobs.
04:38I hate to say it, but a lot of this job is throw you into the fire and see what you can do.
04:44So we'll see, you know, what he's capable of.
04:50I'll know by the end of this job here how good or bad he is.
04:57Now, my thing is, should I drag it like that up and then flip it up here?
05:01You don't want to drag it on this roof.
05:04It'll spin, you flip it, readjust your cable, and then you pull it up.
05:09Okay.
05:11Did you feel like this was a little more than you can handle?
05:14It's a little bit different than what I've been doing.
05:17Yeah.
05:18So that's why I wanted...
05:19You wanted me, so you pressed the panic button and pulled me, right?
05:21Well, basically, I was just like...
05:22Which is good, that's good.
05:23I need...
05:24Guidance.
05:25Guidance.
05:26He thought he was going to pull it straight up the front, right?
05:28You don't work like that.
05:30I want you to boom out.
05:32Yep.
05:33Okay, go do that.
05:34Okay.
05:35He's going to boom out so that his line is over here more, and then it'll spin nicely,
05:41and then we'll roll it and tug it.
05:44Start pulling and see what happens.
05:49That's good.
05:51Back it off.
05:52Throw me a block.
05:57Do you want to block wood?
05:58Yes.
06:02He's dug a wedge in there, so the car will stop and it wedges,
06:05and then it'll roll it back over on its tires again so we can get it up on the road up here.
06:10Talking wings.
06:11So that's why you have to wedge it.
06:14And it should be coming down about right about now.
06:20He's learning.
06:21He's picking it up, you know, slowly.
06:22You've got to tell him two or three times.
06:24He might be half deaf.
06:25I don't know, but he's picking it up.
06:30Strap it right around and then put your hook in the two eyes.
06:33No, no, not like that.
06:34Yeah.
06:35That's right.
06:36Just like that.
06:37And that's the strongest part in that car.
06:41Is it in neutral?
06:42I think it's a standard.
06:43You think?
06:44Or you know?
06:45No.
06:46You should check.
06:47You want it to be in neutral, right?
06:49Make sure the e-brake's off.
06:51This truck has to work a little harder at getting this car to the snow.
07:06And he's learning that there's geometry in what's going on here.
07:10The physics.
07:19You know what happened there?
07:21The free wheel let go.
07:22What happened is the gear didn't go all the way in.
07:24So he started pulling and it popped out of gear.
07:27If we were on a call and we were involved in search and rescue,
07:30and you were lifting that car up and there was a person underneath that,
07:33which is very possible you could get a call like that.
07:35You wouldn't be a popular guy if that car was up a little ways,
07:38they were getting the person out, and the car went back down on them again.
07:41Can't happen.
07:42So you learned that lesson.
07:45So okay, let's carry on and get this out of here.
07:56Did you learn a few tricks here?
07:57Yep, I did.
07:58I learned a lot.
07:59A lot?
08:00All right.
08:01I would have done it totally different if I was on my own.
08:02Yeah?
08:03I probably would have dragged on and screwed up the top and then flipped it over.
08:06No, that would be a bad thing.
08:07But you know what?
08:08I think you did a really good job.
08:09I'm pretty happy.
08:10I think you're moving up the scale, buddy.
08:13Okay, good job.
08:14Okay, thank you.
08:15Very good job.
08:16Thank you very much.
08:19I'm happy.
08:20He did a good job.
08:21He's a good listener.
08:22He's absorbing what we're telling him, what we're teaching him.
08:25And he could turn out to be one of my best guys in the future.
08:29You know, we'll just see.
08:32But for now, Towing 101 must take a back seat to an urgent police call.
08:37Heavy rescue is needed on the Twisting Canyon Highway.
08:49A semi took out a power pole.
08:52Freezer Valley traffic just wants everybody to take care in driving up there.
08:58The power's out, eh?
08:59There's no light in the tunnel.
09:01All the power's been taken out from the hydro poles down.
09:04So, no hydro all the way in this canyon.
09:07It's two now.
09:11I've been doing this a long time.
09:14And every part of this road has a memory for me.
09:18I go by and remember accidents.
09:21And I work towards helping people out anytime I can, you know.
09:25And that's something that I live to be ready to do.
09:28We're coming on scene here now.
09:31A truck and trailer went off the road and took out a 70,000 volt power line.
09:36He's in the ditch.
09:41The truck rolled over onto the driver's side, crushing the cab.
09:45Putting the driver's life at risk.
09:52Heavy, wet snow has turned the Twisting Canyon Highway into a skating rink.
09:57Tires ride on top of this, and you have no traction.
10:01A semi has smashed into a power pole.
10:05Police have closed the highway and told Jamie's heavy rescue crew to stay back.
10:12There's nothing they can do but play a waiting game.
10:15Just take a trench, you know?
10:18Yeah, and then just pull all the snow away.
10:20You'll have to scoop that into a bag.
10:22So Adam decides it's time to have some fun with the new guy.
10:26What's going on there?
10:27He's going to get him to dig a trench around it now.
10:30He's going to dig a trench around it?
10:32He's going to dig a trench around it.
10:33He's going to dig a trench and he's going to pile snow up about this high around the other side.
10:36In case that empty barrel is going to leak.
10:37All right.
10:38So you got a shovel on your truck?
10:39A little one?
10:40We got a flat one.
10:41That'll work.
10:42Just tip away at it, right?
10:43The ground's not frozen.
10:44In case we have a fuel spill here with this empty barrel.
10:47This empty barrel leaks, we're .
10:50I have no clue what they want.
10:56They're all good at giving orders, but that's about it.
10:59I think he's swearing now.
11:04So Rob, have you figured out that they're just with you?
11:09Yeah.
11:10Does an empty barrel leak?
11:13We were just bored and we had nothing to do, so we had to play a game on you.
11:17Yeah, of course.
11:18New guy.
11:19Little man's bowling ball.
11:20We love you.
11:21Help you fill a hole back in.
11:26But after two hours on hold.
11:31Traffic just called.
11:33The fun comes to a crashing halt.
11:35Confirm that it's a fatality.
11:38And the driver's body is still trapped inside the cab.
11:47So what do we got going on there?
11:49We got a truck with a van trailer on, reefer.
11:52Most of the driver's side of the truck has been wiped off.
11:54So what we're going to get you to do is, with your rotator, we'll come in and we'll kind of grab hold of the cab and just kind of pick up.
12:00Just a little bit.
12:01Take the crush off?
12:02Yeah.
12:03We're going to cut some of the door and the mirror frame out of the way.
12:06And then if we need you to lift more, then we'll be able to go from there.
12:08So we can free the victim.
12:09Okay.
12:12Jamie moves his truck alongside the wreck and spins the boom out over the smashed cab.
12:17Just tell him I'm going to put a little bit of a twist on the frame with this one.
12:22That's good, guys.
12:23Okay.
12:24We're going to put a little twist on the frame.
12:25Mary.
12:26Mary.
12:27Mary.
12:28The grim recovery is over in minutes.
12:32And the highway department decides to send heavy rescue home.
12:36The wreck can wait till morning.
12:38Highways doesn't want us on the highway right now.
12:40The road's been closed long enough.
12:41So they want this road open.
12:43So we're going to find out what we're going to do tomorrow morning.
12:57Rob stayed up all night to guard the wrecked trailer and its load.
13:04Now, heavy rescue must hurry to salvage thousands of boxes of frozen food.
13:11Okay.
13:12And put it right up on the road, maybe in front of Adam's wrecker.
13:17This load could have a value of $200,000 to $300,000.
13:21With the cool temperatures, a lot of the product could be salvageable.
13:25So big pressure on us.
13:28So Jamie brings in some extra help.
13:31Stack all the broken stuff against the wall.
13:34Neighbour and salvage expert, Jim Lasser.
13:36What do we got for a crush?
13:38Probably 10%.
13:39Okay.
13:40So they're very concerned about keeping the loss to a minimum.
13:44So that's where we're at here.
13:46We're packaging it out, bringing it out.
13:48Just trying to get a rough idea of what the box is waved, stock accordingly, shrink wrap,
13:52and carry it out.
13:56Thick mud bogs down the job.
14:02And it takes until mid-afternoon before all the food is removed and the crew can begin to recover the wreck.
14:08But before that's done, Jamie gets a call for another crash.
14:15This one, on the coke.
14:17Okay, no trouble.
14:19We need the trailer up.
14:20It's a big recovery that requires Adam's Heavy Rescue 52.
14:27To finish this job, Jamie is forced to bring in one of his smaller trucks.
14:31The old girl is a good, clean piece of equipment and can do a job.
14:34Tighten it up.
14:35That's good.
14:36That'll work.
14:37The older truck doesn't have the same capacity as Adam's.
14:41I think we'll be good other than rocks.
14:44But with the rotator doing most of the work, Jamie is confident he has enough power to recover the wreck.
14:50I could probably pull this thing up all by myself, you know that?
14:54I'm a gazelle.
14:56Okay, so one guy's got to go up top, Brendan.
15:00I didn't ask you if you wanted to.
15:02Come on, you're a little climber guy. Get up there.
15:04Get up there and get there.
15:05You see where my hand is here?
15:08Put the hooky in there like this.
15:10The trailer is on its side, but it's relatively undamaged.
15:14Jamie thinks it can be saved, so he needs the crew to be extra cautious.
15:18You're chaining this to the frame as tight as you can.
15:21And now what will happen is when you pull on the tire, it won't ruin anything.
15:26Then just throw the slack over to me.
15:31Beauty.
15:32Last night, the semi took out a power pole.
15:36But this morning, the power's back on.
15:39The wreck sits directly below lines carrying 70,000 volts.
15:43If we're overhead lifting and we pull up on here, something snaps, the cable, you know, wants to whip up, wraps around the cables, energizes the tow truck, power down to the ground.
15:55Boom.
15:56Boom.
15:57We're all dead.
15:58We're dead.
15:59If there is a power situation, everybody needs to know to shuffle your feet.
16:02Don't lift your feet.
16:03Slide your feet.
16:04Seeing as Hydro's still here, why can't they just turn the power off?
16:07They won't let us do that.
16:09They don't want to interrupt service to their customers.
16:13To help give Jamie extra wiggle room, the power company uses a non-conducting fiberglass boom.
16:26Hydro Foreman is going to give us a hand here.
16:29He doesn't want anything interfering with these lower wires.
16:32And there's a, I think it's a guide wire or ground neutral wire.
16:35So we're going to lift the wires up, give us some clearance here.
16:38It's going to be a heavy pull, of course.
16:41And then you've got the possibility of one of the lines breaking or something on the truck breaking free.
16:46And the line's shooting up.
16:50This gives you added protection.
16:52It isolates you from any shock.
16:54Okay.
16:55Okay.
16:56I guess we're ready to go.
16:57You've got the line lifted up.
16:58We've got to lift it up as far as we can go.
17:00Okay.
17:01So we're going to go ahead here as long as you guys are good with that.
17:03Yeah, we are.
17:04Okay.
17:05All right.
17:06We're at it then.
17:11We're looking up.
17:12All right.
17:13We got to go ahead.
17:14Okay.
17:15We're looking up.
17:16We're looking up.
17:17On British Columbia's Fraser Canyon Highway,
17:41Jamie is in a tough spot.
17:43Run that out.
17:45Put that into another chain.
17:46A wrecked reefer trailer has crashed
17:49directly under a 70,000-volt power line,
17:52and it's still live.
17:55If a chain, cable, or any part of the rotator
17:59touches the line,
18:00Jamie and his crew will get electrocuted.
18:04You put power into there.
18:05We're all shish kebabs here.
18:07A special non-conducting fiberglass crane
18:10has been brought in to give Jamie some extra wiggle room.
18:13Okay, so we're going to go ahead here
18:16as long as you guys are good with that?
18:18Yeah, we are.
18:18Okay, all right, we're at it then.
18:31Jamie has had to call out his oldest truck to help out.
18:34As they begin the pull,
18:40the little truck struggles to hold its ground.
18:43Here's one.
18:48Good like this.
18:49Great.
18:50Do one, and then the other.
18:52One.
18:53Yeah, we're going backwards.
18:55Pulling us in.
18:56I'm kind of pulling against him
18:59as I'm pulling ahead.
19:01I'm trying not to, but it's happening.
19:03I generally wouldn't use this small truck
19:04to lift this trailer up.
19:06I mean, another tandem is probably better for the job,
19:08but it'll get done.
19:19Keep pulling.
19:21Keep pulling.
19:23Get in there.
19:25Pull.
19:25The chain fell off of there,
19:38on that one there,
19:39and the cable come flying.
19:41Not a good thing.
19:43It's a close call.
19:46Fortunately, the cable flew towards the rotator,
19:49not the power line.
19:51They've dodged a bullet for now.
19:54Give me a little bit of slack on this one.
19:57Hold on, hold on.
19:58This time, the cable holds.
20:09The trailer misses the power line by inches.
20:12That's all that little truck can do, man.
20:17The trailer is securely on the highway,
20:19but the heavier cab is mired in the mud.
20:23I'm hanging on to the trailer,
20:25so it's stopping it from going back down,
20:26so they can re-reset their hooks.
20:29Okay, so unhook and come around the front side.
20:31His only option is to unhook and reposition his small truck at the front
20:38to help redirect the pull.
20:40Just get ahead of it quite a ways,
20:43and then put a line on it,
20:44drive ahead, free wheel.
20:45He's betting that positioning the small truck
20:48at just the right angle
20:50will provide enough pulling power
20:52to free the cab from the mud.
20:54You know what, guys?
20:56I'm going to tell you where you need to hook.
20:57You're in the wrong spot.
20:59Undo that.
21:00You need to be here.
21:03Give me one end of it.
21:04You see here, right here?
21:05That's the strongest point.
21:07Thanks, Jimmy.
21:08Yeah, another end.
21:09Do the same side on the other side.
21:10If we pull on the front axle, we'll rip it out.
21:16So we need one block in here and one down there.
21:23With the small truck repositioned,
21:25both vehicles are ready to pull.
21:40Back looks really good, Jamie.
21:54It's amazing, these old trucks,
21:56we thought they were the cat's ass
21:57when we were kids.
21:57Now look at them.
21:59They don't even compare
22:00with what we do today, right?
22:03Now, Jamie turns his attention
22:05to one final task.
22:08Can you guys go in there
22:10and kind of get everything in a pile
22:11where they can get it?
22:12And we're looking for the guy's wallet.
22:16Probably here somewhere.
22:18One thing we're doing right now
22:20is we're trying to find the wallet for this guy
22:22so they can go back to the family.
22:23And we don't know where it is there.
22:26They're picking through the stuff.
22:27We don't know if it could be still in the tractor.
22:30The next of kin
22:31or other family members here
22:33will have the opportunity
22:34to pick through something to remember them by.
22:38Yeah, this is where he was.
22:39You know, their life is in that vehicle sometimes
22:42and we're putting closure here for the family.
22:45That's what we want.
22:47Was there any wallet?
22:48Not yet, not yet.
22:49Okay.
22:50They're really concerned about that for the owner.
22:53Thanks.
22:54So this is some of his personal stuff.
22:56So we'll keep care of that for the company.
23:01We'll probably send it back in a box for the company
23:03and they can deal with what they can deal with.
23:04So I'll keep this for him.
23:06I'll keep this for him.
23:14In this business, you get the highest of highs
23:16and you have the lowest of lows.
23:19Things run through your mind.
23:22You wonder who the person is.
23:23You know, does the person have kids?
23:25You know, is there somebody at home
23:26waiting for him to get home?
23:27It's one of the busiest days of the year on the coke
23:53and it's hell out there.
23:55A perfect combination that should make
23:58for a decent payday for Jamie's crew.
24:01Except this morning, his newest driver is missing.
24:07Rob took off the other night to go into town
24:10and he had to take some time off
24:11and that was cool.
24:12It's some family things to deal with.
24:14But I told him, if it snows out,
24:16I want you back here right away to get in a truck.
24:19Snowing, there's cars in the ditch everywhere.
24:21Where is Rob?
24:22He's just sitting in the driveway.
24:23I don't know where he is.
24:23I've tried to phone him.
24:24I don't know what he's thinking
24:25or what planet he's on.
24:27Maybe he doesn't understand
24:28that you're in the toying business.
24:29You should be to work when it's snowing.
24:32And Rob, if he doesn't get his shit together here
24:34in the next little while,
24:35I'm just going to can his ass
24:36that he can go find a job somewhere else.
24:42With calls pouring in
24:43and people trapped on the coke,
24:45Jamie is forced to send Adam
24:47with his heavy iron to do Rob's job.
24:52Everybody was hitting this berm of snow
24:54and then went sideways
24:55and there was just a whole bunch of us
24:57that just all went everywhere.
24:59A few minutes later,
25:01Kevin shows up in a small truck to help.
25:03Rob's going to took today off,
25:05you know, busiest day of the year right now,
25:07and he's not around.
25:09Everybody knew the snow was coming,
25:12but I guess he doesn't watch the weather.
25:13Jamie's two most experienced drivers
25:17make quick work of an easy job.
25:20Well, the owner wants to drive it
25:21because he's got a plane to catch from Mexico,
25:23but that's not going to happen.
25:26He's got smashed windshields,
25:27puking oil all over the place,
25:29and it sucks that it ruins his vacation,
25:31but lucky he's alive.
25:34Let's back up and grab this guy.
25:36I'm hoping that it's drivable.
25:43I don't know, man.
25:45I'll be good here now.
25:47Get one more pull and then...
25:49You can drive it out of there now?
25:51Let's give her a whirl.
25:52We'll see.
25:56I got my car.
25:58Looks okay.
26:00I'm pretty happy.
26:01Back at the yard,
26:10the missing man finally shows up.
26:13I told Jamie on Friday night
26:14that I need Saturday and Sunday and Monday off
26:19because I need to go see my aunt
26:21that's dying and stuff,
26:23and yeah, I might have pissed the boss off,
26:25but my point is his family's important.
26:29It's just like if his family member was dying,
26:32you're telling me that he wouldn't go to see her?
26:37But I'm back at work now,
26:38and I want to try to, you know,
26:41get some work here while the snow's around.
26:44I don't know.
26:44We might find something.
26:45We might get lucky.
26:51Up on the highway,
26:52a jackknife semi is blocking the southbound lane,
26:55and the driver has a broken arm.
27:00We're pretty smashed up.
27:01Are you okay?
27:01Arm hurts?
27:04Do you want to sit in my truck and stay warm, or...?
27:06Broken?
27:06Broken?
27:08Yeah.
27:08Maybe we should get him.
27:09We better get him an ambulance.
27:09Ambulance.
27:10Partner's got a broken arm.
27:12Needs an ambulance.
27:12That's on Highway 3.
27:18So the engine protection's shutting us down,
27:24which means he's got a coolant issue.
27:25I don't think we should haul this whole thing down here, though.
27:29I'll get on the brakes.
27:29To get the jackknife off the road quickly,
27:32Jamie volunteers to ride in the truck being rescued,
27:36something he's never done before.
27:38Just to get down this hill,
27:39he's going to need some help with the brakes.
27:40Because of the slippery weather.
27:42To keep the loaded trailer from pushing Adam out of control down the hill,
27:47Jamie must carefully ride the brakes in the disabled rig.
27:53Meanwhile, down the hill,
27:55Rob is reviewing the lesson he learned in chain-up class.
27:59Chains are too long.
28:02They're tight, but I got way too much.
28:13We'll just keep going.
28:16Just hope he doesn't wreck nothing.
28:29Oh, man.
28:35Is it that side?
28:376'8", any other Jamie Davis drivers are already on the coke?
28:44I don't think anybody's off here.
28:47I'm just going to take that chain off.
28:49I don't want to wreck my truck.
28:54While Rob is derailed,
28:56Jamie's riding in the cab of a semi
28:58that Adam's towing down the steepest part of the mountain.
29:01We've got a lot of weight on the back here for this truck.
29:04And so what I'm doing is I'm on the brakes.
29:07I'm coming up here there.
29:08I'm on the brakes here.
29:09So we're just trying to drag this out of the way.
29:14And if he has trouble trying to stop,
29:16I can help him stop because I have all the brakes.
29:18So we've got three, four, five axles of brakes on the ground.
29:25This is weird.
29:26Weird to be on the hook.
29:28Whoa-ho-ho-ho-ho, scary.
29:30I don't think I've ever done this my whole life.
29:33Whoo!
29:35Isn't this freaky?
29:39About as good as she gets for now.
29:45How come you were scared?
29:47What's that?
29:47How come you were scared?
29:48I don't think I've ever been in the back of a truck getting towed before.
29:51No?
29:51That's scary.
29:52Whoa!
29:52I got goose bumps.
29:56I guess you can give me a ride up, eh?
29:58Yeah.
29:58Okay.
30:02Are you going to back down or are you going to try to make the swing?
30:04Um, I don't think the trap's going to be too huge.
30:07I think I'll put the swing.
30:08Today, Jamie's team is raking in the cash.
30:13But his rookie, not so much.
30:16Two kilometers east, Rob stumbles upon what could be his first paying customer.
30:22I'm just going to go and see if this guy needs to pull up the hill.
30:24Not the truck, the car.
30:27Are you going to make it?
30:29If I can pull you up the hill for 50 bucks.
30:35Oh, no.
30:43My, uh, wind's just frozen.
30:47Oh, this isn't good.
30:48Okay.
30:54So, I don't know.
30:58I've got to go ask them how I get it unfrozen.
31:00Because I'm new at this.
31:02This sucks.
31:056-8 to 5-0.
31:07Go ahead, Rob.
31:09Yeah, how do I get my winches unfrozen?
31:12Um, can you run them up to me here?
31:13Just a little further up the hill?
31:15Pull into the lake of the woods.
31:16Or just go by it a little bit east and I'll be there.
31:24Is it freewheel in or out?
31:25Freewheel's in.
31:27No, but I went to pull it out, though, and it wouldn't come.
31:29Well, first of all, get some of the snow off of here.
31:32Get a sledgehammer out of my truck, out of the box.
31:35Yeah.
31:36And give it a tap, because it's frozen.
31:39Drum's just, like, seasoned.
31:46Oh, uh, just, it's frozen.
31:48The grease is so cold.
31:50It's minus 16 right now.
31:52Yeah.
31:52Right?
31:53Things just don't work.
31:54Like normal.
31:55Well, we did everything you can do.
31:56Use your other winch, and this ain't L.A. freeway, buddy.
32:01We'll make some frickin' money.
32:03Yeah.
32:04Get at her.
32:06So I have to use the other winch for now.
32:07I got one, so I'm good.
32:11Let's go find work.
32:20The sun goes down.
32:215, 4, 2, 1, 5, 0.
32:24But Jamie's day is far from over.
32:27I have a drive.
32:28He's in it inside.
32:30Whereabouts exactly?
32:32Yeah, I'm blue, right now.
32:34Okay, north and down there.
32:36Yeah, about 12, 14 kilometers north of town there, Jamie.
32:39He's decided to give his crew a break and take this one solo.
32:45Now they're saying, well, one other semi's hit that truck now, so it could be a two semi accident, which is a huge mess to clean up with one guy.
32:53Holy moly.
32:55He's beginning to wonder if that was such a good idea.
33:015, 4, 2, 1, 5, 0.
33:03At the end of a long day on the coke, Jamie responds to a call for a truck wreck on the Trans-Canada Highway down in the Fraser Canyon.
33:11This highway's an older highway, it's a two-lane highway, and it's very narrow, very windy.
33:17To give his crew a break, he decided to go solo.
33:20Now they're saying, well, one other semi's hit that truck now, so it could be a two semi accident, which is a huge mess to clean up with one guy.
33:28It's a decision he's beginning to regret.
33:34Wow.
33:36A trailer full of water bottles has been ripped open.
33:40Broken right in half, this trailer.
33:42But the bigger mess is just up the road.
33:45Holy moly, it's right across the road.
33:51When a southbound semi skidded on black ice, the water bottle truck swerved to avoid a head-on.
33:57But it was too late.
33:59The two trucks clipped each other.
34:03The semi that ended up in the ditch is now blocking the highway.
34:08Traffic has been stopped for over an hour.
34:11This could be a five- or six-hour job.
34:13It's more than Jamie bargained for.
34:15Bones, you on the radio? It's Jamie here.
34:17Opening the road is a job for several rescue wreckers and a big crew.
34:22But Jamie has to do it alone.
34:24Traffic has to keep moving, and the pressure's huge to get that highway open again.
34:28You got nobody behind you. You're all there, all alone.
34:31It's like going to battle in your general custard.
34:35The water bottle truck is already on the shoulder.
34:38With the weather getting worse, Jamie decides against trying to move it tonight.
34:42The other trailer is snagged on the edge of the embankment, making it tougher for one wrecker to pull out.
34:50I just need to get in here facing that way and just suck this thing around this way.
34:54Jamie is able to drag the trailer just enough to get the highway open.
35:19I don't want to put the whole thing in the ditch, so we'll just have to take it out later.
35:23Getting it out, we'll have to wait until tomorrow.
35:26So this road's basically open here as far as we can be for now.
35:30Okay, so you're all good then, and we're all hopped up? Okay.
35:34At 1.30 a.m., he finally heads home to bed.
35:42The next morning, Jamie's crew is up early to tackle the water bottle mess.
35:47Water, water, who wants water?
35:50Last night, one truck that's down in the ditch back there tagged this one, ripped this trailer right open,
36:00and now because of the integrity of the trailer, how it's sinking like that, we've got to unload this.
36:05Load it back into that trailer.
36:08Yeah, it would be nice if it's just a load of beer, but it's not.
36:11It's just water.
36:12Water.
36:15Up the road, Jamie and Adam are focused on getting the other semi out of the ditch.
36:21It's empty, so there's no weight here.
36:24It should come out pretty easy.
36:25This is a fairly simple job, not too bad of a deal.
36:29It won't be long.
36:31You want me to go, or...?
36:32Yeah, you go ahead. I'm not going to pull hard here.
36:34It goes without a hitch, until Jamie spots a problem.
36:44Whoa!
36:46We've got to get the rescue up here.
36:50I am here, 70.
36:52You on the radio, Kevin?
36:54Yeah, go ahead.
36:56You bring the rescue up here and pump some fuel out.
36:58Okay.
36:58Okay.
36:59Usually when a truck goes in the ditch and it's had a crash, the fuel's already evacuated,
37:03but in this case, we got it up and got it a little more level,
37:06and some of it started leaking out.
37:08This tank, Adam?
37:10Before they can move the truck, they must pump the fuel out of the ruptured tank.
37:15With a highway full of thirsty semis, they have no trouble finding a spare tank.
37:21Well, we've got to put it somewhere.
37:23We're going to put it in our truck,
37:25and then Jamie can talk to the owner later about fuel.
37:29Can you get a hold of Rob and tell him to come up here with the one-ton
37:35and pick up the side of this trailer?
37:38Rob arrives to help move the damaged cab.
37:42What'll happen here?
37:43But then Adam notices that Rob has done some damage of his own
37:47to the rubber sling belts that are required for towing.
37:51When you're using these, you should have slack with a little bit of chain on each end,
37:54so the chain's lifting, not this.
37:56You know why you drive the truck in the fleet, eh?
37:59These aren't really made for lifting.
38:00I know, that's why I had the chain.
38:01I had the chain as tight as I could go.
38:03A lot of company guys would be looking at that and going,
38:05wow, what do you keep those guys for, you know?
38:07Sometimes it's like...
38:09Jamie doesn't like to be the boss.
38:11He doesn't like giving people a when guys damage things
38:13or don't show up to work.
38:15There's no real consequences.
38:16You know, he just sucks it up.
38:17I can work with people.
38:19I got more patience than the average guy, I'll tell you that.
38:21With his damaged truck basically useless,
38:27Rob is demoted to cleanup duty.
38:29Water bottles, and there's probably a thousand more to go.
38:33Got to handpick them all.
38:35Everything's got to come out of the ditch.
38:38We've got to make it look like it looked before the wreck happened.
38:42You'll be sick of water by the time we're done this.
38:44By late afternoon,
38:52the ripped open water trailer is being cut up for scrap,
38:55and Jamie's weary crew is packing up for home.
38:59I'm looking for Jamie.
39:00That's me.
39:01We should be down here within the hour ourselves.
39:03No more, sounds good.
39:05On my way back, I'll stop and put like 50 bucks of fuel in this thing.
39:09Sorry, just put 40 on the bike itself.
39:11I got to go.
39:11Ah, copy that.
39:14Can I get me a six-pack, too, there, boss?
39:17Yeah, 10 for you.
39:20Rob follows the rest of the crew back in his damaged truck.
39:24After a long day on the job,
39:26it'll be a long ride home.
39:29We've been through a lot of things with him,
39:31more so than a lot of other guys,
39:33and I don't know.
39:34Rob's initiation at Jamie Davis Heavy Rescue
39:43hasn't gone as planned.
39:45In his first few weeks,
39:47he's damaged his truck.
39:48So, I don't know.
39:49I got to go ask him how I get it unfrozen.
39:51Missed the biggest snow day of the year,
39:53and last night,
39:55he backed into old Bruce's car at the yard.
39:58This is probably like a $3,000 claim.
40:00He's gone from up-and-coming driver
40:04to window washer.
40:07There's been a couple of days where it's like,
40:10you know what, I don't know what I'm doing here.
40:11Maybe I should just cut my losses for the damage
40:14and the issues that we have with him
40:15and move on to somebody else.
40:18I just want to be able to stay employed.
40:20I mean, Jamie's an awesome person to work for,
40:22and I don't want to...
40:25I always want to work for him,
40:27but I don't want to, you know,
40:29I don't want my job to go away.
40:38Tonight, Jamie decides to give him one last chance.
40:42Have you ever done a repo?
40:44No, this is me, my first one.
40:45Never done a repo ever?
40:46No, this is my first one.
40:48Your first repo?
40:48Yeah.
40:49You a little nervous?
40:50Yeah.
40:51Don't be confrontational with the people.
40:53No.
40:53It's not your job to be some kind of a fighter guy
40:57or something like that.
40:58No.
40:58First thing you need to do is back in that guy's driveway
41:00as fast as you can,
41:02get the thing up in the air.
41:04Once it's up in the air, all bets are off.
41:06Yeah.
41:07And if you have to,
41:08if things get a little tense
41:09and the guy says, get off my property,
41:11no problem, you do that, right?
41:13But you do it with the guy's car on tow.
41:15Yeah.
41:16Good luck.
41:17Okay.
41:18I'm going.
41:19Let's go.
41:20This is your first repo, man.
41:21First repo?
41:22Yeah, don't screw it up.
41:23Nope.
41:24Okay.
41:24All right, buddy.
41:25Okay.
41:28Rob heads into the town of Hope
41:30to rendezvous with the recovery agent.
41:33This guy has no idea what's going to happen.
41:35He didn't even know there was a way on this.
41:36Yeah.
41:37It's one third party.
41:38So you just want me to back up,
41:39get it hooked up and get off there?
41:41And I'm going to ask for the key.
41:42Yeah.
41:43No problem.
41:43It's your show, so you...
41:45Yeah.
41:46Well, I'm sure you've done this before.
41:48No, this is actually my first one.
41:49Your first repo?
41:50Yep.
41:50All right, we got ourselves a version.
41:53They're looking for an SUV
41:54that was collateral against a loan gone bad.
41:58Problem is, they're not sure where it's at.
42:03I don't know.
42:04It could be anywhere.
42:06But this town's not very big,
42:07so we'll just go up down the streets here
42:10and see if we can locate it.
42:11Here's our truck.
42:20Here's our vehicle.
42:22I found it.
42:23It's up at the rec center up across from Cal Tire.
42:26Basically, what I'll have you do
42:28is just back up to it like you're doing
42:30and just do your dollies
42:32and I'll go in and see if I can find this guy.
42:36Just like hunting?
42:38Bag yourself an escalade.
42:40Well, we don't have it yet.
42:41Just watch the door from Scotty
42:45and they're going to go in and see if I can find him.
42:48Rob scrambles to get it hooked up
42:49before things get ugly.
42:51It could go easy or it could get hot.
42:55Yeah, here we go right now.
42:57Hello?
42:58My name's Rick.
42:59The car's owner was in the middle of a hockey game.
43:02You bought this off...
43:03Exactly, yeah.
43:05Yeah, he came in and borrowed money on the vehicle.
43:09Didn't pay us.
43:11And we have a lien on the vehicle.
43:14And basically, we're here to repossess the vehicle.
43:18Yeah.
43:19I'm assuming you were on the ice?
43:21Yeah.
43:21Oh, jeez.
43:22You can tell.
43:24So...
43:25How'd you find it?
43:27It's what I do, right?
43:28So, yeah.
43:30Unfortunately, I got to do this to you, man.
43:34Looks like this one's going to go easy.
43:37Yeah, we'll get out of here.
43:40I'm happy.
43:45First repo, we got it.
43:46We found it.
43:47It took us, I don't know what, 10 minutes?
43:51You never know what you're going to get into when you're tow truck driving.
43:54And this is my first repo, and, uh, nah, I like it.
43:59Bailiff said he did a great job.
44:01I was impressed.
44:03You know, at the end of the day, he's pretty harmless, he's pretty friendly, and really not
44:07a bad guy.
44:09Tell me how your repo did.
44:10It went good.
44:11Didn't damage anything.
44:12Didn't damage nothing.
44:13Did a good job.
44:14Thank you very much.
44:15I'll tell you the truth.
44:16The last couple of weeks, I was thinking of counting you, right?
44:20I'll tell you, it's crossing my mind all the time.
44:22Like, what do I do, right?
44:23I was going to say, pick me.
44:24I felt sorry for you, he knows nobody else is going to hire you, he's got no boots,
44:28he just moved into that mobile home, he needed a job, so, you know?
44:32I'm trying to give you a pat on the back.
44:34He's come around, he's gotten better, he's not getting worse, you know, he's getting the
44:38hang of it, a little more, a little more, so diamond in the rough, maybe.
44:41But, if you're next, you're out of here.
44:44Next time, on the highway.
