00:00What do you think of coaches like we were talking about earlier today how like Ben Johnson took the Bears job and everybody thinks last year everyone thought the Bears were going to the Super Bowl and I was laughing because it's been since 85 since the Bears have mattered.
00:14I don't care how many times they've gone to the playoffs.
00:16They've failed every single time.
00:18They missed 27 yard field goals, shank them left.
00:21I've seen it all.
00:22When you get a job as a coach now in the NFL on a team that fired their coach, you're starting from scratch in a bad situation.
00:33Is that not about right?
00:34Now people say Caleb Williams.
00:36Caleb Williams was on his back the whole season.
00:39I am not buying that you can just watch because he was great with the Lions.
00:43The Lions were loaded with talent.
00:45I don't think the Bears were.
00:46How hard is it to get a job and do well on a team that fired their coach and they stunk and that's why they fired him?
00:54How hard is that job?
00:57I mean, it's a complicated job.
00:58There's a lot to it and you have to you have to have a really good plan going in those first 90 or 100 days as we all know in any business is vital making sure that the coach puts together the right staff and then that right staff goes in along with the GM and his personnel staff.
01:12And they're critically, like radically candor about the players that they have, right?
01:19Get rid of some of them, move on, you know, do this, do whatever it is, re-sign some.
01:23It takes a lot.
01:25And look, I think in the end, we just said it's not an easy job.
01:29But if you have the plan in place and you can – I say this as well.
01:34I say this to all of my contemporaries in the league as well as the coaches, the best time to go after whatever you need from that owner.
01:41Your honeymoon is when you first sign that contract, right?
01:45Every day that you live in that job, you're on less of a honeymoon and less apt to get what you want and need.
01:52I know that sounds a little cynical, but it's the truth, right?
01:55You better come to the table with everything you need pretty well strong out the gate because as things start getting a little dusty, it gets a little more complicated to get that done.
02:05When a guy like Pickens for the Steelers – as you know, I'm a big Steeler fan, season ticket holder.
02:10When a guy like Pickens is labeled a problem and, you know, he's a pain in the ass but has that kind of talent, you're not giving that up, are you?
02:23Because the guy is difficult or a little bit immature or a little bit painful, how do you deal with pain in the asses?
02:32I think on the pain in the ass factor, I think if – as long as you're not littering your roster with the PIA factor, let's call it that.
02:42You know, you just – you can't litter – you can't have 10 of those guys.
02:47But if you're smart about how you do it and you can work with it and make sure that you have someone on your staff,
02:52hopefully it's your head coach or your coordinator that gets along with that guy well and can talk him through the tough times,
02:58I think you can make it happen.
02:59I always said you can have a wayward soul or two, but you have to be very mindful.
03:04I always thought that Bill Belichick did a really good job with that.
03:07Every once in a while, he'd bring in a guy, you know, and he'd bring in a guy that was on the edge
03:11and he would shoot him straight and they would play really well for him.
03:14I think it comes from the leadership to make sure you keep it in check.
