00:08:51But Beasley was on his way home just now, so we're hoping that we could ask some of his friends if they've seen him,
00:08:59so we could pay him a visit and maybe get some honey, as long as they're not too busy.

00:09:21So here we have some colonies of Africanized bees placed on continuous stands,
00:09:48and we have a smoker that we use that we smoke the entrance of the bees as we approach.
00:09:54The reason for that is to keep the bees calm.
00:09:56There are several other reasons we could give, but for now we're just going to say that the bees will remain calm with the smoke.
00:10:02It will prevent them from attacking us.
00:10:05When we open the hive, we give a little smoke, again, to let the bees know that we're here,
00:10:10and to allow them to go down so we can now proceed to remove one of the frames that they have stored honey in.
00:10:17So what you're seeing here now is a frame, a super frame, a shallow super frame, with stored honey,
00:10:24and the solatron is uncapping it for you to see the honey drain out.
00:10:29And as it is draining, you'll see the bees coming and drinking back that because that is their stores.
00:10:37Now in this area, you're not really expected to see the queen bee.
00:10:41We'd have to go down in the lower chamber, which is the brood chamber, to search for the queen bees.
00:10:45We have to bear in mind that this hive as it is may contain as much as 50,000 to 60,000 bees in it.
00:10:55You're going to have one queen, maybe a couple hundred drone bees, which are the male bees, and then several thousand worker bees.
00:11:03What we're looking for, you'll have any sightings of Beasley by any chance he's our mascot?

00:12:31The bees are important because they help the flower to produce fruits and seeds by doing the act of pollination.
00:12:40So pollination is where you have the flower producing fruits and seeds, basically.
00:12:46So the real importance of bees lies in the fact that they bridge the gap of energy from the natural source of sunlight to us, the consumer of the food.
00:12:58What makes queen bees so important?
00:13:01Without the queen bee in the hive, the bees will not stay together in the hive because we have thousands of bees in any one hive, like similar to these boxes that we have here.
00:13:12And these bees, if it doesn't have a queen, because she produces a special substance that we could use as a queen pheromone, that pheromone or queen scent, smell, keeps all the bees together.
00:13:29If you didn't have that, all the bees would fly out and go the separate ways.
00:13:32So we have one of these small frames here for you to have a better look at it.
00:13:36This is this same, similar frame to the top, same size, where you actually have honey that is sealed, that we're going to extract.
