00:00And I'm sitting here missing you, sipping this day.
00:04My name is Raz on the radio, you guys know that.
00:06Welcome, welcome everybody here to the Bush Auto Group X Lounge.
00:11Say hi to Josh Ross right here, ladies and gentlemen.
00:14Good afternoon.
00:14And this is Jake.
00:16How's it going?
00:17Jake is backing up our sales team today with the concert t-shirt, by the way,
00:21with a old school Metallica concert shirt.
00:25All right, let's get to know Josh a little bit.
00:27So you were in town last night opening for Nickelback and Brantley Gilbert.
00:31Correct, yes.
00:31Did you have a good time?
00:32Great time.
00:33Was it a packed house?
00:34It got packed by the end, yeah.
00:36And then we get to do a song with Nickelback, too, which is a lot of fun every night.
00:38We get to do it.
00:39Look at his photograph?
00:40We do Copperhead Road.
00:42Get out of here.
00:43That's your song, yeah.
00:43That's awesome.
00:44Yeah, so it's been a lot of fun.
00:45It's been great.
00:47So did you have any interaction with Brantley Gilbert at all?
00:50Brantley has been the best big brother that I never knew I had.
00:54That's awesome.
00:54It's been really cool to see, you know, you don't know what to expect on a bigger tour.
01:00And he's just been very open with, you know, whether it be what's going on in my life, relationships,
01:06you know, just general advice.
01:07And then his entire team, you know, their players with our players and just kind of everybody all hanging out.
01:12It's pretty awesome.
01:13They're probably still at the casino right now from last night.
01:16Oh, over and live?
01:18That's awesome.
01:18They haven't gone to bed yet.
01:19Meanwhile, you're working.
01:20Here we go.
01:21Yeah.
01:21They give you any guitar advice?
01:23Oh, yeah.
01:24No, everybody's been super welcome.
01:25That's awesome.
01:25It's been cool, man.
01:26All right.
01:27All right, so let's get to know Josh Ross a little bit here.
01:30So we don't know much about Canada.
01:33That's okay.
01:33Neither do I.
01:34Well, so tell us about Hamilton.
01:36You're from Hamilton.
01:37I'm correct.
01:38That's Ontario, correct?
01:39Correct.
01:39Yeah, I'm from Ontario.
01:40I moved to Nashville about, it'll be five years ago, November, but grew up a huge, most of my family is in the United States,
01:48so I grew up kind of spending a lot of time here in both West Coast and East Coast, and then now in New York City, too.
01:54My cousin lives there.
01:55So lots of traveling and just luckily to be brought up in a motorsports family, so that kind of was what brought me to the U.S. in the early days.
02:03Do you have a famous motorsports team or personally?
02:07I was a motocross racer for a lot of years.
02:08Oh, motocross.
02:09I thought you said motorsports.
02:10Yeah, so that kind of was what brought me to travel to the U.S. a little bit, and then my dad was a huge NASCAR fan,
02:15so I kind of grew up going to a lot of other races and stuff like that.
02:19So through this, how do you discover you want to be a musician?
02:25I always like to sing.
02:26It was kind of a joke between me and my friends, and one of those things, I played college football in Canada,
02:31and I was the one that vouched for country radio on Thursdays in the change room,
02:36and kind of was that.
02:38That was kind of the early days of me singing and doing stuff,
02:40and then I had two reconstructive surgeries on an ankle of mine,
02:43and I just was not into the sports side of it anymore,
02:46and the politics was coming back from an injury, and I was like,
02:50I really enjoy this music thing, and I'm going to do that because nobody's going to be my boss,
02:53and then you get into it, and you realize there's a lot of pieces to this puzzle, too.
02:58You have bosses, too.
02:59I have a lot of bosses.
03:00Technically, I'm the boss, but it feels like I've got bosses, yes.
03:03Yeah, so wait, so when you play college football in Canada, is it Canadian rules?
03:08Correct, yes.
03:09Yeah, we've got three downs.
03:10Yeah, it's different.
03:11Passing game, wider field.
03:13And what did you play?
03:14I was defensive back, halfback, yeah.
03:16Nice.
03:17Running around.
03:18Well, good for you.
03:20And it was the injury that got you, were you rehabbing or playing the guitar?
03:23Yeah, I was just bored, so I was sitting around.
03:25I always remember Jason Aljean, Truth, and It Goes Like This,
03:28Thomas Rhett were the first two songs that I learned,
03:30and I just kept playing them over and over, and then I started to kind of write my own stuff
03:34and wanted to learn getting better guitar and piano, and that's kind of how it all started.
03:40And so you decided to go to Nashville.
03:42Was that a vision from the beginning?
03:45I just knew that I had a lot of catching up to do as a songwriter and as a singer.
03:49You know, the most important part for me was getting better at singing,
03:53and I knew that being in a talent pool like Nashville was really what would make me better.
03:58And again, being so acclimatized to say the U.S. and the South,
04:03I felt like it was a very easy transition for me where I know it's not for a lot of people.
04:07And yeah, I just wanted to be better.
04:10I wanted to be a global artist, not just be strapped to a certain place.
04:14And a lot of people ask, you know, the differences, and I relate it to a lot like Texas.
04:17Like, there's people that do really well in Canada, and they want to stay there,
04:21and then there's other folks that kind of want to travel the world and do the whole thing.
04:24Can you make a living in country music in Canada?
04:27I know they had a big scene up there, and the radio stations are different.
04:30Yeah, I mean, there's probably four or five artists you've never heard of that make great money
04:34and that just stay there.
04:36But you wanted it all.
04:37I think I'm a traveler.
04:39I don't like to sit in one place very long,
04:41so I think me was just, you know, I want to explore the world.
04:45I'm really excited.
04:45Like, next year we get to go overseas a little bit too
04:47and kind of do stuff that I don't think I would ever have done if it wasn't for music.
04:52That's amazing.
04:53And then how did you meet this guy?
04:55Probably a house party.
04:57I lived with a guy named Cameron Marlow,
04:59which you guys probably know for a little while, in Nashville.
05:01And yeah, one night I think we had a poker night,
05:04and then we had a night where we were going to go out after poker night
05:06to watch Jake was playing in a band on Broadway.
05:09And my job was to rally up the girls for the house party.
05:14And we got back to the house and had this big party,
05:17and we just got along really well.
05:19And it's kind of developed into this over, I mean, that's three years ago now.
05:23So it's cool.
05:24Whatever happened to the girls?
05:26They went.
05:27They're still in Florida, last we heard.
05:29Yeah.
05:30Honestly, they're both married, I think, now.
05:34Good job.
05:34Yeah, yeah.
05:35There we go.
05:35We held a job there at that party.
05:37Then we realized what they didn't want.
05:38I hear you.
05:40All right, Josh Ross, ladies and gentlemen.
05:42It's going to be fun to see him play a few songs here
05:44in our Bushauter Group X Lounge.
05:50So I like to kick it off with kind of different sides of my personality
05:56and stuff like that.
05:57So this first song is a song I wrote about two years ago.
06:01For a while I couldn't figure out why things weren't working
06:03or, you know, what I wanted to say as a songwriter and an artist.
06:07And this was the first song that I walked out of a writing room.
06:10I was like, this is exactly what I need to be writing about,
06:13and this is exactly who I am.
06:15This song is called First Taste of Gone,
06:16and it's just the truth about a girl that I was dating.
06:19She was 700 miles away, still in Ontario, Canada,
06:21kind of moving on and doing her own thing.
06:24So that's how we got this song.
06:25I'm hating how it feels to walk in here without you tonight.
06:48I'm kind of wishing this was just another one of those fights
06:58that we were still running in circles.
07:02We say some things we regret, but then we work it out.
07:07You go and walk out the door, but then you turn around.
07:11It never felt like the end, but this is different now.
07:15This is different now.
07:18Cause baby, tonight this shade of red neon's feeling wrong
07:24When you're 700 miles away, moving on
07:29And I'm sitting here missing you
07:32Sipping this 80 proof
07:34Getting my first taste of gone
07:38Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
07:43I never thought we'd ever get to our last goodbye
07:52When it was broken, we'd fix it
07:54You'd talk, I would listen
07:56We both give in
07:58You wind up spending the night
08:01But girl, this is different
08:03Cause baby, tonight this shade of red neon's feeling wrong
08:09When you're 700 miles away, moving on
08:14And I'm sitting here missing you
08:17Sipping this 80 proof
08:19Getting my first taste of gone
08:24We say some things we regret, but then we work it out
08:36You go and walk out the door, I wish you'd turn around
08:41It never felt like the end, but this is different now
08:45This is different now
08:48Cause baby, tonight this shade of red neon's feeling wrong
08:54When you're 700 miles away, moving on
08:59And I'm sitting here missing you
09:02Sipping this 80 proof
09:04Getting my first taste of gone
09:08Whoa, whoa, whoa
09:12I'm getting my first taste of gone
09:17All right
09:27So we started to do these radio shows
09:31Kind of this year
09:32Once we signed with the Universal National Team
09:33And it's been a really great experience
09:35But it's funny, the first experience I had
09:37I think I got a little too excited about it
09:38And we were in Phoenix, Arizona
09:41And I got to go out my first time in Old Town
09:44And Scott's still there
09:45And Jake and I were, or actually it was me
09:47Was on top of a table at 4am
09:49At a Whiskey Row bar that was there
09:51I was like super excited
09:52They had a Whiskey Row also in Phoenix
09:54And the next day we had a radio show
09:56And it honestly kind of set up perfect
09:58Cause it explains kind of who I am as a person
10:01And first taste of gone is definitely the side
10:02That is the emotional, you know, sad guy side
10:07Which I think, you know, I'm probably most of the time
10:09But then there's these odd times where
10:11I get myself in trouble and do stupid things
10:13And I like to show the other side
10:15So this song is called On A Different Night
10:16If you ever listen to the record
10:17It's more of an up-tempo kind of party song
10:19So this is On A Different Night
10:21If you saw me out here, man, I'd be the life of the party
10:40Buying rounds for some downtown girls
10:45I'd be the life of the party
10:46I'd be the life of the party
10:47I'd be the life of the party
10:48If you caught me on a different night
10:52I would be sitting here looking kinda sad
10:57Swimming in this neon
10:59I'll make this Friday a lot more fun
11:03Like before you came along
11:05Wish I could just stop missing you
11:09Start moving on, girl
11:11I'd be looking like a rock star
11:13Walking into this bar
11:15Finding me a new pair of blue eyes
11:17I'd be on my way to one more
11:20Tearing up the dance floor
11:21Trying to get you off my mind
11:24All the boys that want to party
11:26Girls that drink Bacardi
11:27Gonna have to call me a different time
11:30Cause part of me is still sitting with you
11:33In the back corner booth
11:35On a different night
11:36On a different night
11:42We were walking in here
11:45I was trying to tip the bank
11:47Get to playing your favorite song
11:49Spin you around for a little
11:52Show you off till you wanted to take it on
11:55Wish I could just stop missing you
11:58Start moving on, girl
12:01I'd be looking like a rock star
12:03Walking into this bar
12:05Finding me a new pair of blue eyes
12:07I'd be on my way to one more
12:09Tearing up the dance floor
12:11Trying to get you off my mind
12:13All the boys that want to party
12:15Girls that drink Bacardi
12:17Gonna have to call me a different time
12:20Cause part of me is still sitting with you
12:23In the back corner booth
12:24On a different night
12:26On a different night
12:32If I could just stop missing you
12:39Missing you, missing you
12:40Start moving on
12:42Start moving on
12:43Wish I could stop missing you
12:45Missing you, missing you
12:46Start moving on
12:48Start moving on
12:50Girl, I'd be looking like a rock star
12:53Walking into this bar
12:54Finding me a new pair of blue eyes
12:57I'd be on my way to one more
12:59Tearing up the dance floor
13:00Trying to get you off my mind
13:03All the boys that want to party
13:05Girls that drink Bacardi
13:07Gonna have to call me a different time
13:09Cause part of me is still sitting with you
13:12In the back corner booth
13:14Yeah
13:15On a different night
13:22All right
13:34So we want to play a new one for you guys
13:36Which I'm excited about
13:37If that's okay
13:40I don't know
13:40Yeah, okay
13:41I thought we were supposed to play ones
13:42That are only out or not
13:43Yeah, I will do that
13:46Yeah, exactly, right?
13:50I'm like, what if I just don't play this thing
13:52When I play all these other things?
13:55I'm super excited about this song
13:57I had this idea for a long time
13:58And honestly, I walked into a bar
14:00Like probably five years ago
14:02And I saw a girl that I used to date
14:04And I probably had a few too many beverages
14:07But I walked up to her
14:08And her boyfriend was there at the time
14:10But I just wanted to tell her
14:10If you're ever single again, let me know
14:12And I've always had this idea called
14:14Called Single Again
14:16So we finally got to write the song
14:17At the end of March
14:19And yeah, I think this one's definitely
14:21Going to come out next year
14:22And excited about it
14:22It's called Single Again
14:23I know I shouldn't say what's up
14:35I heard you went and met someone
14:47But I got a little cold bit buzzin'
14:50He ain't here right now
14:52And he ain't here right now
14:54I bet you if I took your hand
14:59We had a neon night slow dance
15:02You'd be gettin' to forgettin' all about him
15:06And we'd be walkin' out of here without him
15:10So when you're single again
15:11So when you're single again
15:12And then you're thinkin' of me
15:14You know I got that same old Tennessee
15:18Six-one-five that you used to hit up
15:22A half-pass where you at
15:25Pick me up
15:26When you're all over him
15:28I hope you're all over me
15:30I got a king-sized bet
15:32Just missin' a queen
15:34Make me your first call
15:35After your last call with him
15:39And you won't ever be single again
15:42I got a cabinet with your name on it
15:49A slow drive on a Sunday
15:51You can count on it
15:53I'll treat you better than he ever did
15:57Girl, when we're together
15:59You won't ever wish
16:01That you're single again
16:03And you're thinkin' of me
16:04You know I got that same old Tennessee
16:08Six-one-five that you used to hit up
16:13A half-pass where you at
16:15Pick me up
16:16When you're all over him
16:18I hope you're all over me
16:20I got a king-sized bet
16:22Just missin' a queen
16:24Make me your first call
16:26After your last call with him
16:29And you won't ever be single again
16:33Oh, single again
16:37Single again
16:41Single again
16:45So when you're single again
16:49And you're thinkin' of me
16:51You know I got that same old Tennessee
16:55Six-one-five that you used to hit up
16:59A half-pass where you at
17:01Pick me up
17:03When you're all over him
17:05I hope you're all over me
17:06I got a king-sized bet
17:08Just missin' a queen
17:10Make me your first call
17:12After your last call with him
17:15And you won't ever be single again
17:19Oh, single again
17:23A single again
17:27A single again
17:31Grab my water between each one
17:42All right, I'll play the one that matters
17:45No, this is honestly
17:48For me, it's really cool
17:50Thank you
17:52This song just means a lot
17:55I mean, it's the first time that
17:56You know, the recognition's been incredible
17:59For the song
17:59Whether it be, you know
18:00Radio side of things
18:01Streaming side of things
18:02Saddlehead radio side of things
18:03Just very lucky
18:05To actually get to write a song to me
18:09That mattered a lot
18:09I wrote it with my best friend
18:10That I wrote First Days of Gone With
18:11And true story
18:13I just, you know
18:14I moved to Nashville
18:14Got very lost
18:15Got caught up in the scene
18:15Probably was doing things
18:16That I wasn't so proud of
18:17And, you know
18:19The truth was
18:21Is my friend had this idea
18:22And I left a voicemail
18:23For my ex-girlfriend
18:24Saying, if you could
18:25Would you come back home
18:26Because, babe
18:27I'm in trouble
18:27And it kind of wrote itself
18:29And it's cool
18:31We get to play it now
18:32And I realized that
18:33She couldn't save me
18:34It was for me to figure out myself
18:35And I'm very thankful
18:37For this song
18:37So this song's Trouble
18:38I appreciate you guys
18:38Having me very much
18:39For those of you out there
18:41Again, my name's Josh Ross
18:42And I'm grateful to be here
18:56I don't want to spend
18:58Another night alone
18:59Reaching for the space
19:01You left in our bed tonight
19:03So I guess I'll call
19:09Somebody's up here
19:11Gonna take another shot
19:13And some Broadway dive
19:15I might give you a drunk down
19:21Just to tell you
19:24What you already know
19:27Baby, I'm in trouble
19:33Instead of missing you
19:37I'm getting through another double
19:39A white flag
19:42Wave and come to save me
19:44Might be reckless
19:45I can't help it
19:47So if you could
19:48Would you just come back home
19:51Cause baby, I'm in trouble
19:57Baby, I'm in trouble
20:03Heading the street
20:09For another memory
20:11Trying to stay afloat
20:13On this old bar stool
20:15Wishing you would call
20:22But you won't
20:23That it'll get better
20:25But it don't
20:26Cause Jack T
20:27And Jesus
20:29Ain't you
20:30Baby, I'm in trouble
20:33Instead of missing you
20:37I'm getting through another double
20:39A white flag
20:42Wave and come and save me
20:44Might be reckless
20:46Might be reckless
20:46I can't help it
20:47So if you could
20:49Would you just come back home
20:51Cause baby, I'm in trouble
20:57Baby, I'm in trouble
21:03Wishing you would call
21:10But you won't
21:11That it'll get better
21:13But it don't
21:14Cause Jack T
21:16And Jesus
21:17Ain't you
21:18Baby, I'm in trouble
21:22Baby, I'm in trouble
21:28Baby, I'm in trouble
21:32Baby, I'm in trouble
21:34Instead of missing you
21:38I'm getting through
21:39I'm getting through another double
21:40I'm getting through another double
21:41I'm getting through another double
21:42A white flag
21:43Wave and come and save me
21:45Might be reckless
21:46I can't help it
21:48So if you could
21:49Would you just come back home
21:52Cause baby, I'm in trouble
21:57Cause baby, I'm in trouble
21:58Baby, I'm in trouble
22:04I'm in trouble
