00:00Ben, we've seen you attacking a lot at this Giro d'Abruzzo so far.
00:03Are you happy with what you've done?
00:05Yeah, I think yesterday's attack made a bit more sense than the one on the first day.
00:09That didn't quite pan out perfectly, but no, I've had good legs.
00:13I've enjoyed being able to go on the attack and be near the front of the bike race.
00:18Is today another stage for attackers?
00:22I think so. I think there's a lot to play for with the big teams in the GC,
00:26so they're going to have plans. They're probably going to make it a hard day for the rest of us.
00:30But if there's an opportunity to go on the attack, I'll try and be there.
00:33Coming from Oxford, riding for an Italian continental team in Italy.
00:39What do you like in Italy?
00:41The racing is brilliant. The cycling culture is brilliant.
00:45I would say the weather is brilliant. Yesterday, not so much.
00:48But yeah, you see how many people come out to watch the race here,
00:52and the start times are so beautiful. There's a lot to love.
00:55Is it a good way to develop your career?
00:58I think so. I think the team gives us a really good calendar, races like this,
01:03where we get to test ourselves against the pros. It's a good opportunity for us.
01:07How important is Il Ciro d'Abruzzo for you and your team?
01:11I think being an Italian team, every race we do in Italy, it's super important.
01:16All the sponsors are here. The team boss was here on stage one and two.
01:21So yeah, we want to come and we want to try and at least get some sort of result out of the race.
01:27So today, the last chance. How to do it?
01:30Yeah, I mean, we came with a good team. Conti had a bad day yesterday.
01:35Sometimes I think when it's cold, the Italians can be a little soft.
01:39But yeah, it was a cold day yesterday and a few people's legs froze up.
01:44So that was our GC sort of out the window. So yeah, today I think we're all in to try and win the stage.
01:48Does it mean it will be a very animated race?
01:52Yeah, I think there's a lot of people in this race that haven't got as much as they'd like out of it.
01:56I can imagine it's going to be a big fight for the break and I think there's a good chance the break might stay away.
02:01You are the German national champion. There is a German leading Il Ciro d'Abruzzo,
02:06but probably not the German you wanted to lead Il Ciro d'Abruzzo.
02:09How well do you know Georg Zimmermann?
02:12I know pretty well. We are from the same city in Germany even, so I know him already for probably 15 years.
02:20So I'm happy for him. He takes the win. But yeah, of course, I was hoping I was in the jersey yesterday.
02:26I was feeling really strong, to be honest, but we made some major tactical mistakes to send someone up front.
02:33But yeah, in the back there was the pace out, so everyone was looking at me.
02:37That was really not a good situation to be in and yeah, I think Georg, he profited from that to take the gap.
02:46Everyone looked at me and I didn't make it to the front and then the pace was completely out.
02:50So the gap was going up super fast in one or two kilometers and I could still do a super good effort
02:58on the last climb, but it was too late, you know. So I think, yeah, we are really disappointed.
03:04Yeah, but I hope we can bounce back today on the last stage.
03:10You're an attacker. Is it a race for attackers today?
03:12I think it is. There are not so many big teams anymore, like a lot of dropouts yesterday.
03:18So I think it's going to be an open race.
03:20You are a big team, but only with four riders and you are backing De La Cruz for the overall win.
03:27What are your priorities?
03:31For sure to keep him on the podium, but I think it's also possible to combine.
03:36Like if you have a rider in front and he can jump, for example,
03:38then it's a good possibility for stage win and GC.
03:43Do you think it will be difficult to beat Zimmerman for GC?
03:46Yes, because the climbs are not that steep, so it will be hard to drop them and drop him.
03:52And yesterday it was, yeah, he showed us really strong.
03:57Best young rider, are you happy with that or you are hungry for more?
04:01Yes, I am happy, but I am hungry for more. Yesterday I think we did a great job.
04:07The stage was super hard because of the weather. We ride with too much cold,
04:14but at the end I think we did a great job. The last two kilometers I probably didn't have the best legs
04:24and the other riders were stronger, but today we will try again and it's a hard stage.
04:31It's difficult to make difference in the GC, but for sure it will be hard and we can try.
04:36Can you use the strength of your team compared to the teams of Zimmerman and De La Cruz?
04:42I think our team is really strong and maybe they have less riders because other riders
04:51have abandoned the previous day. So maybe we can do some strategy like a team and for sure
04:59we will do a very good stage. What a big news for your team yesterday to have won the stage at
05:06Il Gio De Bruzzo. Did you party?
05:09Yeah, we are really happy for him because he is the rider that is always trying to help us
05:17to get good results in the stages. So I'm really happy for him and just that the team,
05:25the boss, the boss, are happy for this. Is it a motivation booster for you guys, especially
05:32you in a stage that can suit you today? Yeah, yeah, for sure. I think it was a really nice thing
05:39because when you get a good result with another teammate, maybe the team is always looking for
05:47for more, you know. So yeah, we are happy. Today, do you want a sprint finish?
05:52Yeah, I think so. We are looking for a small sprint, I think, because today the GC is really close.
06:00So we are going to be really focused on the GC riders and yeah, hopefully we are going to arrive
06:07in a small group. It hasn't often happened to you to lead a stage race, especially on the last day.
06:14How do you feel? A bit nervous? I don't know. I'm confident about my strengths yesterday. I was
06:20feeling really good. So if I have the same sensations today and a little bit of luck, I think I can take
06:26home, let's say, the victory. What are you afraid of? Nothing. Like, I'm not afraid of losing. Like,
06:33the best rider will win the race and today we will find out who is the best rider at the SCO
06:39di Abroad. So even I'm not afraid of losing this race. It would be really, really nice to take the
06:44victory, but yeah, I will try my best. You said you like the trophy. Why? It's like, looks like,
06:55like a nice trophy, not a, like, um, not a standard metal trophy, like the thing to drink out of. So it's,
07:03just looks cool.
