00:00The second ever edition in the modern iteration of the Giro d'Abruzzo and a
00:08testing 151 kilometres uphill downhill and then towards an uphill finish in
00:15Crecchio. An opportunity for a puncher to take the first stage perhaps and to
00:21take the leader's jersey in the Giro d'Abruzzo. A mixture of young Italian
00:27teams, continental teams from the home country, an international field as well
00:31as a smattering of top world tour talent rolling out for 151 kilometres on stage
00:37one from Czerny. The flag dropping at kilometre zero eventually and the
00:43expected attacks coming from a number of the Italian continental teams looking to
00:48make their mark on the race and get up the road represent their teams. Palti visit
00:53Malta, one of the first teams to try and force a breakaway and prize a group clear
00:58from a very active peloton in the opening phase of the race. It was then that
01:02Davide Basso of the SC Padovani polo cherry back team went off the front and held a
01:08small advantage over the peloton but he too was caught back in until eventually a
01:13breakaway of three made it up the road including his teammate Matteo Zollo who
01:18took the only categorised climb of the day ahead of Diego Bracalente and Christian
01:23Ramelli. Behind it was a combination of Anto Marche, Israel, UAE team Emirates
01:29working behind to control the brake and then disaster for Ramelli the youngest of
01:34the riders in the breakaway who overcooked a corner on a tricky descent and at
01:39exactly the same spot about three minutes later one of the Japanese riders from
01:44Anto Marche, Wonti also went down. That left just two riders up the road working
01:50together to hold on to a shrinking advantage as Stevie Williams among the
01:54other race favourites behind got ready for the action. The peloton controlling the
01:59breakaway and giving them very little chance. They got to the intermediate
02:03sprint of the day at Ripra Teatina and it was once again Matteo Zollo who got there
02:08ahead of his breakaway companion. David de la Cruz of Israel though picking up one
02:13bonus second for third place at the intermediate sprint on GC. Then there was
02:18a counter-attack from Ben Granger who for a while was stuck in between a peloton
02:22closing in on the front of the race at the two riders in the remains of the
02:27breakaway who were eventually just outside 30 kilometres to go caught by
02:31Ivo Olivera riding now for UAE team Emirates and the race favourite for the day
02:36Alessandro Covey. Stevie Williams surprisingly dropped early on and as UAE team
02:43Emirates just stalled that allowed a counter-attack of some seven or eight
02:46riders to go clear.
02:47They worked well together and eventually they were joined by another group of
02:52riders off the front of a peloton that was being controlled by one rider and one
02:57rider alone from Israel Premier Tech. At this point the race chaotic two distinct
03:01groups going up the road and it was time for UAE team Emirates to seize control of
03:06affairs. With five kilometres to go Bruna Heragots and Ivo Olivera had control of the
03:12race for UAE team Emirates approaching the final climb of 1.3 kilometres steep as
03:18well to the finish line in Crecchio. Alessandro Covey then putting his troops on the
03:23front and it was Bruna Heragots who took them through the Flamme Rouge at one
03:27kilometre to go and then the indefatigable Ivo Olivera got to the front and
03:32delivered a masterful ascent to place his team leader Alessandro Covey exactly
03:37where he wanted to be with 250 metres to go. Covey then blasting away from the
03:42rest a spirited showing from Filippo Fiorelli in second place but the gap was
03:48significant and Covey took his first victory in any kind of race for over
03:52three years. His last victory coming in 2022 at the Giro d'Italia. Covey then the
03:58winner ahead of Fiorelli and Alessandro Fancellu from the JCT team. The new
04:05leader then Alessandro Covey by four seconds ahead of Fiorelli and Fancellu
04:08at six seconds all the rest at ten seconds and of course this being stage
04:14one Covey also heads the point stands. The king of the mountains Matteo Zollo on
04:20the only categorised climb of the day he scored five points and the best young
04:24rider Alessandro Fancellu 24 years of age leads the way in the young rider
04:28competition.
