00:00Welcome to Bermuda,
00:03a small island paradise in the middle of the Atlantic.
00:07Seeing the turquoise waters, it does lift my mood.
00:09We'll go along the coast, OK? See you up there.
00:13A dedicated police service...
00:15Go, go, go!
00:17Somebody's going to need to open this door up really quickly.
00:19..is keeping this British Overseas Territory safe.
00:23Wait, tap!
00:25I think he wears the uniform very well.
00:27You want the $20 now?
00:28Officers, including Brits, doing their duty.
00:32It's tough. And it's really humid today.
00:37The reality is that there are challenges.
00:40Crime-busting in a place where anything can happen.
00:44I didn't really expect the cows to run out the gate.
00:46Uh-oh.
00:49Going to great lengths to catch criminals.
00:54She's gone, gone. She's gone.
00:56Cannot make this up.
00:58With summer tourists arriving in droves.
01:01Woo-hoo!
01:03This is peak season for the police.
01:06Listen, baby. Calm down.
01:08I love policing.
01:10It's in my DNA.
01:12Today in Bermuda, officers patrol the prison perimeter.
01:22If there's been an event inside the prison
01:24and they're trying to get rid of a knife,
01:27they'll chuck it over the wall.
01:28A suspected squatter wreaks havoc.
01:31They smashed a toilet and the tub.
01:36And tempest flare at the station.
01:38I'm in the service.
01:40Calm down. Calm down.
01:42There's nothing there.
01:44There's nothing there.
01:56Officer Gregory White is patrolling the streets of the island's capital, Hamilton.
02:01Hotel 2 requesting a 37, 38 place.
02:05Yeah, I much prefer patrols.
02:07Last week, I had to do the station sergeant duties and I did all right with it.
02:12It's growing on me, but I prefer to be out and getting stuck into the action.
02:17The best thing about being on patrol in Bermuda is you never know what you're going to come across.
02:23So I'm going to stop this bike now.
02:24They just ran through the red light.
02:27I'm going to pull a chase.
02:33Yeah, we got chase.
02:37There it goes.
02:38Officer Gregory is chasing what he suspects is a stolen bike.
02:42I'm going to lose it.
02:43The unpredictability and the excitement of the job, it's definitely part of my makeup,
02:49part of my DNA, I guess.
02:51Ah, like I lost him.
02:53I went the other way.
02:55It's frustrating, but it happens.
02:58Being in a car, you can't always keep up with them.
03:01It's annoying, but it comes to the territory.
03:05Car ownership is limited to one vehicle per household,
03:09so motorcycle theft is rife with millions of dollars' worth of bikes stolen every year.
03:15The criminals are known to use a lot of the back roads to try and avoid the police contact.
03:22It's a cat and mouse game with them.
03:24Officers are always on the lookout for bikes that have fallen into the wrong hands.
03:29Hotel 2, Oscar 10, 5. 37, please.
03:33Just running the plate, trying to make sure it's not a stolen bike.
03:36And any hint of suspicious activity is a red flag.
03:40Ah, so a bike that I saw, his helmet was undone right there.
03:45Ah, she's going to turn around and stop him.
03:46And he's made a quick turn off on a cut road here.
03:50And he appears to be trying to evade me.
03:54Is he going off?
03:56Yes, he is.
03:57Son of a gun.
03:57I'm not going to even be able to get up that road,
04:00because he's going to go up and go right through there.
04:02They're a lot more nimble in the bikes to be able to get through the cut-through.
04:06Officer Gregory's racing to cut off the motorcyclist's shortcut.
04:12You need to be switched on out in the street.
04:16You're always going to be one step behind them,
04:18because they're going to know what they're going to do before you.
04:20So you have to be able to react.
04:22Might be able to get around fast enough,
04:24but you still have to be aware of your surroundings and take a bit of a risk.
04:29So you've got to be really trained well,
04:31and you have to use that training in order to get the job done.
04:35Let's see if he's come back out this way.
04:37That's not him.
04:40He may have been trying to make his way back out that way,
04:42if he's gotten through here already.
04:44By the time I got through, he may have gotten out
04:47and continued on his way.
04:49The motorbike rider made it through the cut before Officer Gregory.
04:53Here's the area where the bike would have come out of.
04:56They know even the big police bikes, they can't get through there,
05:00but the small little scooters can get through there and get away.
05:03So just part of the cat and mouse game that we play.
05:06They have to be lucky all the time.
05:08I've got to be lucky just once.
05:09On the eastern side of the island, Officer Lisa Tucker and her colleagues,
05:30Officers Derek Simmons and Vinay Suvana are on patrol.
05:34Today has been kind of an uneventful day.
05:40But when things do happen down the east, they happen.
05:44When Lisa joined the force 12 years ago, she was fulfilling a lifelong dream.
05:50So way, way back in the 80s, they actually used to recruit you right out of high school.
05:56I'm getting me ice cream.
05:57It's hot.
05:58Heat is on in it.
05:58The cadets came into the classroom, and I have a thing about uniforms.
06:04And they just look so smart, their heads on, the uniform looking all nice.
06:10And I'm like, that's what I want to do.
06:12You're welcome.
06:13I enjoy being on patrol because I can work with anybody on the service.
06:18I cannot even think not one person I don't get along with.
06:21Everyone likes to work with Lisa Nicole Tucker.
06:24Who's your team?
06:25My team is Somerset.
06:27All right.
06:28I believe I'm 12 hours on the job, and I'm going to make it the best 12 hours I can make.
06:35As the officers get back on patrol...
06:40Lisa Tucker speaking.
06:42They get an urgent call of a bike theft.
06:45All right, thanks. Appreciate it.
06:47Three e-bikes, each worth thousands of dollars, have been stolen.
06:52Bike thefts?
06:53It's a very big issue, but not too many pedal cycles.
06:57And this is the first that I've heard of, of these electric bikes being taken.
07:03It's mostly the motorcycles.
07:05Like, most times, someone would just take one, like, to get, just to use for transportation at night.
07:11To get from one destination to another, to get music from wherever they are, to get to them.
07:15But the whole three of them to be stolen.
07:18This seems to be toggling.
07:21It's a good find out.
07:22The bikes belong to a rental company, run by a local couple.
07:27Good afternoon.
07:28Lisa needs to gather details of the theft at the scene where the bikes were stolen.
07:34Do you know where the bikes were stored or where they were being charged?
07:36From my understanding, they were being charged overnight, correct?
07:38They were supposed to be, yes, but the bikes would have been located right where...
07:42Oh.
07:42Yeah.
07:42They were supposed to be kept in a lock garage for whatever reason.
07:44That's where they were supposed to be, is in their garage right now.
07:47So they were supposed to be here in the garage?
07:49Yes.
07:51It's not even just necessarily on the street.
07:53It's not just in town.
07:54You can't even say any particular area, any particular neighborhood.
07:57They are not discriminating.
07:59It could be right out of your backyard.
08:00You know, so it's a serious problem.
08:03We have to do some further investigation.
08:06Hopefully, we can find out who the person really is that took it.
08:10Let's hope that this doesn't happen to you again.
08:11Obviously, we don't want this to happen again.
08:15The stress of these situations takes away from productivity.
08:17So the sooner that these things kind of get wrapped up,
08:19the sooner we can get back together.
08:21Yeah.
08:21Yeah, yeah.
08:23Alrighty, take care.
08:24The theft of the electric vehicles is impacting business,
08:28and the owners are desperate to get them back.
08:30We always find that the members of the public are always upset and pleased
08:34for one reason or another.
08:35Either we're not active fast enough, we take too long.
08:38They want everything to be like instant coffee.
08:41Well, you know, and I have to tell them it's not Burger King.
08:44You can't have everything away.
08:45It's a process to everything.
08:47Officer Lisa knows she'll need a stroke of luck to return the e-bikes to their owners.
09:00Bermuda is a picture-perfect paradise made up of 181 islands, islets and rocks.
09:17The Coast Guard and Police Service work together to keep the water safe.
09:22Ski one, if you just want to do a perimeter sweep, we'll follow you.
09:28Corporal Melanie Gauntlet and Police Officer Sean Wheatley are on duty today,
09:34and they have their eyes trained on the shoreline.
09:38So this boat is Bermuda's newest shipwreck.
09:41We are the shipwreck capital of the world.
09:43It cut its moorings in a hurricane and has been rocked up here for about three years.
09:50We have to come out and patrol and make sure nobody is getting on the vessel
09:54to strip it of any goods that may still be there that the owner hasn't taken off,
09:58and make sure that there aren't any oil spills
10:00or fuel leaks that we have to control environmentally.
10:07This is just a part-time gig for me. I have a civilian job on the outside.
10:11I am a financial pensions advisor.
10:15In my civilian job, it's a bit more relaxed, less adrenaline.
10:224-1 Alpha, 4-1 Juliet.
10:24Be advised that the tournament boats are on their way back in around Commissioner's Point.
10:31Here we have Bermuda's prison, Westgate.
10:34It is their all-male facility.
10:37They can't see past those walls.
10:40My house has a much better view, more incentive to stay out of prison.
10:45The prison's high walls keep the around 100 prisoners in,
10:49but that doesn't always stop illegal packages coming in and out.
10:55We work in tandem on the water.
10:57So we do a perimeter sweep every shift to make sure that there have been no contraband packages
11:03that have been thrown over to drift onto the rocks to make it into the prison,
11:07and nothing has been thrown out of the prison by the inmates.
11:12Regular checks make the jail more secure and keep the coastline around it safe.
11:19Drugs actually will wash up on shore quite often.
11:23Occasionally, if there's been an event inside the prison and they're trying to get rid of
11:28a knife or a weapon that they shouldn't have had, they'll chuck it over the wall.
11:34I have two daughters.
11:35They are 12 and 8.
11:38I'm proud to say that they love the fact that I serve here.
11:41They call this my super suit.
11:42It's a very, very well-known place.
11:53Bermuda is stunning.
11:55But as Police Commissioner Darren Simons knows,
11:59there's more to this place than sun-soaked beauty.
12:02Without a doubt, Bermuda is paradise.
12:07Call me biased.
12:08But it is a paradise.
12:10Looking at the beautiful vista, you could be confused to think that there aren't such things like, you know, poverty, homelessness.
12:18As a police officer, you know, we get to see some of the other sides of our community, our society.
12:31Officer Gregory White is in Hamilton, treating his team to an iced tea.
12:37It's another hot day here in the summer and helps cool everybody down.
12:43And what are you having, baby?
12:46Mango, please.
12:47Just mango?
12:48Yes.
12:49You can get mango and peanut butter.
12:51OK, bring it on then. Both of them. Perfect.
12:54It was a taste of the darker side of life on the island that attracted him to the job almost 20 years ago.
13:00I was out with some friends one night and I saw a guy get assaulted by three or four other males.
13:08Without even thinking about it, I kind of like jumped into action and tried to follow them as they escaped.
13:15That was kind of like the life-changing moment.
13:17It was like, you know what, I really need to do something to help better my community.
13:21Tears, thanks for hard work. Appreciate it. Without you guys, my dog would be a lot harder.
13:28Officer Gregory is on his way to a property owned by an elderly gentleman that has been occupied illegally.
13:35I attended a job earlier this morning for a report of somebody trespassing, squatting on the property.
13:43I'm just going back to do some follow-up inquiries with the owner to see if they can identify the person that was living there.
13:52The first thing is to check in on the owner.
13:55Hello?
13:56Hello?
13:57Yeah, it's Officer White from this morning.
14:00So the gentleman was close to 80 years old and you could see that he was quite shaken up by it and stuff.
14:07In his golden years, he deserves the police assistance to make sure that he feels safe in his home.
14:13The squad is living in a house adjacent to the elderly man's home.
14:18This is the entrance into the property where the person was illegally staying.
14:25As you can see, it's very small.
14:28The homeowner had asked this person to leave, but before they did, they smashed a toilet and the corner of the tub.
14:38The squatter damaged the property when asked to leave.
14:42I just wanted to come back and show you a picture to see if you can identify who this person may be.
14:46Right, so does that look like him?
14:49The squatter may be known to police, but Officer Gregory can only pursue the case if the victim wants to press charges.
15:17When can you come to Hamilton Station to give me a statement?
15:21About a hour, sir.
15:23So you're looking at what, like four o'clock?
15:25Yeah.
15:26About four o'clock come to Hamilton Station?
15:28Yeah.
15:29Thank you, sir.
15:30With the squatter still at large, the pressure's on Officer Gregory to identify him fast.
15:36And we think that he may be known to the police through other contacts.
15:40It's important that we track him down and bring him in for questioning.
15:45gì want to go?
15:46What do you think he may be picking up with me after being signs несer in the exit?
15:48Tonyugal, celebrative.
15:49In the east of the island, it's a new shift for officers Lisa Tucker and Derek Simmons, and they get an urgent call.
16:04and they get an urgent call.
16:24It's a stroke of luck for Officer Lisa
16:27as one of the stolen e-bikes on her wanted list
16:30has been located nearby.
16:32It means a speedy drive to head off the suspected thief.
16:37I'm not going to lie, I love to drive fast.
16:41I like the adrenaline.
16:43I don't even have to be the one driving good and fast.
16:45If my partner is a response driver and we're getting fast,
16:48I love it.
16:55At the scene, tensions are high.
16:58You're trying to run off once you turn like I...
17:01It won't loop.
17:03I have to hurt it.
17:05Put your side just for me, please.
17:10With the owners of the bike spotting and detaining the suspect,
17:15it's up to Officer Lisa to restore order.
17:19Derek, you got your hand cocky?
17:20Let me just secure this.
17:21Therefore.
17:22This bike's been sprayed to conceal the standards.
17:24My approach is I always believe it's easier to catch flies with honey than vinegar.
17:31I always go in to be polite to everyone.
17:35You know, I try to go in there with my best foot forward and be respectful.
17:40Because I think that even if someone is up here and they're angry and stuff,
17:44if you go in with a different type of energy, different type of persona,
17:48then, you know, they have to change.
17:50So right now, you're going to be arrested for suspicion of talk or theft of removing bikes that don't belong to you, okay?
17:59So I have to find out if the person that was on the bike riding it,
18:05if he had bought it, purchased it from the person that he stole it from,
18:08or if he's the one that actually stole it,
18:10and then we'll take them to the station and we'll do an interview.
18:13Officer Lisa's attention now turns to the e-bike.
18:16It looks like the original colour was black.
18:19So he spray painted it to conceal its true identity, it looks like, yeah.
18:25The respray means the bike's unlikely to have any trace of the thief.
18:29So Lisa's not sure if it needs to be seized as evidence.
18:33All right. No, I'm going to make a call. One sec.
18:37She checks in with her boss.
18:40Hi, Sergeant Butcher. Question for you.
18:42We've got someone in possession for the theft of an electronic psychotic.
18:47It's been spray painted a different colour to conceal its identity.
18:51But the question is, do we still seize the bike as for evidence?
18:55Just take pictures of it? All right.
18:57Photos of the bike can be used as evidence.
19:00I need to get the serial number.
19:02All righty. I think we got everything.
19:04So yes, you can take it.
19:05I so appreciate you guys.
19:07All right, no worries. Take care.
19:08One e-bike is back with its rightful owners, but two remain missing.
19:13The best chance of recovery lies with the arrested man.
19:18So what we're doing now, we're going to Helmerton Police Station,
19:21getting him processed.
19:22We possibly may be doing an interview.
19:24But will he be willing to talk?
19:27We'll get to the bottom of this, OK?
19:29Back out on the water,
19:36Corporal Melanie Gaultlet and Officer Shaun Wheatley are continuing their patrol.
19:46Reaching speeds of up to 60 miles an hour, jet skis like Officer Shaun's give them the agility to react quickly.
19:53quickly. I really enjoy the jet ski work. It's not just fun, but it makes it accessible.
19:59I can get to places, I can interact with people a lot easier.
20:02Bermuda's subtropical climate and gentle trade winds make it a popular spot for sailing.
20:09But all vessels must stick to strict safety rules.
20:13We're going to approach the boat, just do a quick safety inspection, make sure they've got what they need.
20:18Theoretically, because we are offshore where we are here, have life vests, smoke, die, rockets, VHF, all of the safety equipment that you should carry offshore.
20:30Just make sure everybody's got what they need to be having a good day on the water.
20:34And checking that this boat's got the safety equipment it needs is the kind of job Officer Sean and his jet ski are made for.
20:43Just doing safety checks, do you guys have enough life jackets for everybody?
20:46Yes.
20:47Can we just see them?
20:48OK, OK.
20:49And you've got all your flares and everything?
20:51Yeah.
20:52Well, not sorry to be a nuisance, but safety is a big thing.
20:56So far, so good. All the safety equipment's shipshape. Final check, the VHF radio.
21:04And your VHF works?
21:05Yeah.
21:06Fine. Can you squelch it for me? Or do you know how?
21:09The radio's not working. Without it, the boat could be left with no way to communicate in case of an emergency.
21:24That's one important thing, Daphne, especially once you're offshore here. I know you're not very far offshore, but it is required.
21:29Who is responsible for the boat today? Who's the captain? You're the lucky person?
21:34Sure, sir.
21:35All right. It is a tickable offence. Unfortunately, we do have a zero tolerance on any safety offences.
21:40The broken radio means a ticket.
21:43It is just for failing to carry safety. I mean, the VHF not working right now. It's $150 payable within seven days.
21:51Yeah, like I say, you're not the first one today.
21:54I know. Keith said, Jerry, that he thinks the fuse must have blown because it was working.
21:58All right. Well, just get it checked out, by all means. Yeah. Thank you very much. But enjoy the rest of the day, though. Sorry, I hope I didn't put a damper on it.
22:03It's fine.
22:04Great.
22:05Officer Sean rules our rules, even in paradise. Safety is very important. And that is one thing that we are strict on there, because you never know when you're going to need that safety equipment if your boat's starting to sink.
22:16So if people don't know if the radio is working, you're not able to call for help, especially if your cell phone gets wet. And if you just explain to them what you're doing and the reason you're doing it. And generally, you know, they know it's for a good reason.
22:28See ya.
22:30In Hamilton, Officer Gregory.
22:44Hotel 2, 10-4, thank you.
22:46Is racing to identify the squatter in the property of the elderly man he visited earlier.
22:52I got to need somebody that was part of a trio that just got off some murder charges. Ring any bell to you?
22:58The office said it would be in your guy's department. See if it stood out. All right. I'll try and look it up. Thanks.
23:06So I just contacted one of my colleagues who works in the investigation department, who would have dealt with the possible murder that it doesn't ring any bells with him.
23:18With the victim due to make a statement in an hour, it's vital to establish if the suspect is already known to police.
23:26So we're just trying to see if we can go down some other avenues as to who this person may be. And I did identify a possible suspect's last name, but I can't do anything further until I get a statement.
23:42The victim should have been at the station half an hour ago, but he hasn't appeared.
23:47With the island being so small, you can run into challenges because people will not want to come forward with information sometimes because of who they know or because it's so easy to be found out.
24:01So you have people afraid of reprisals.
24:04Concerned for the man's welfare, Officer Gregory decides to return to the property.
24:10Yeah, Hotel 2, 10, 15. My statement didn't show up at 4 o'clock. Go check to make sure he's OK.
24:17When it comes to the elderly who've been wronged, you definitely feel more of a sense of urgency to want to do something to help them feel like they've got some justice and chivalry isn't dead yet.
24:29Back at the property.
24:31Hello?
24:32It's Sergeant White.
24:35When the homeowner finally appears, he has forgotten about the meeting.
24:39Hi.
24:40What up?
24:41I thought it was going to be a statement, that one.
24:42Yeah.
24:43Reassured he's safe, Officer Gregory checks the property again.
24:45Is there somebody in there?
24:46No.
24:47Hello?
24:48It looks like he's gone.
24:49Do you want him prosecuted or do you want him just to be gone and not to return to the property?
24:52No.
24:53Hello?
24:54It looks like he's gone.
24:55Do you want him prosecuted or do you want him just to be gone and not to return to the property?
25:01Yeah.
25:02Whether you prosecute him or not, as long as he don't come here, that will be good enough for me.
25:08OK.
25:09Yeah.
25:10Sometimes that's all it takes.
25:11It's just a police presence in order to achieve the goal of having somebody just leave the residence and find somewhere else.
25:18Sign right there where that X is, please, sir.
25:20The victim was happy that the person had appeared to have taken all their property.
25:24So if they were happy, then I'm happy that they were able to achieve their goal.
25:29Thank you, sir.
25:30Thank you, sir.
25:31Because he's changed his mind, my investigations will now be closed.
25:37It's bittersweet.
25:39Another case closed and another one I can take off my plate.
25:42On the east of the island, officers Lisa Tucker and Derek Simmons are on the move.
26:01Sorry, bumps.
26:02We have a lot of potholes.
26:03I don't know if you've noticed that or not.
26:06They are transporting a suspect arrested on suspicion of bike theft to the station.
26:12You don't have to answer right now.
26:15Did you pay for it?
26:16No.
26:17Oh, he just gave it to you?
26:18Yeah.
26:19Why would he just give you the bike?
26:21No, he just had a bike.
26:22He said, you want a bike?
26:23I said, yeah, I'll give you some bike.
26:25To be honest, I am not certain that he's the one that actually stole the bike.
26:29He stated that someone else had given him the bike.
26:33He claimed that this other person just gave him the bike.
26:36I'm sure that he must have given him the bike for something.
26:39The suspect now needs to be processed and put into a cell.
26:44Taking charge is no-nonsense officer Carol Skerritt.
26:49Were you born in Bermuda, sir?
26:50Yes.
26:51And you know why you're here?
26:53Sensational.
26:54Bad.
26:55Where's Lockings?
26:56I'm coming, Miss Skerritt.
26:58But the suspect quickly becomes agitated.
27:01Don't make sense.
27:03Calm down.
27:04Calm down.
27:05Calm down.
27:06You can't, you become.
27:07You can't take it out.
27:08You can't take it out.
27:09Your attention is low.
27:10Was it open?
27:11Calm down.
27:12We're going to assist you.
27:13Just calm down.
27:14With one second.
27:15So with some people, once they get there and they realize that this is, this is real,
27:19then it can go down south, like real quick.
27:22There's nothing there.
27:23Sir, it's there.
27:24Right now, he will be staying in custody for the night, and we're hoping that tomorrow,
27:30we'll be able to do the interview with him.
27:36Fortunately enough, we were able to make an arrest.
27:44For me, it's a good thing because we were able to recover the electronic bikes.
27:49So I think it builds up confidence with the police service when the community gets their
27:54items back.
27:55Thank you, Miss Skerritt.
28:00For officers Lisa and Derek, today's a win in the war against bike theft.
28:05Good night.
28:06See you tomorrow night.
28:07Right.
28:08Take care.
28:10Next time, on the water there are penalties to be paid.
28:14First ticket in Bermuda.
28:16Second ticket in Bermuda.
28:17Stop there.
28:18Thank you for supporting the government of Bermuda by paying some money towards it.
28:21We need every cent.
28:23And in the park, a patrol gets heated.
28:26Why are you taking my food?
28:27You didn't pay for that.
28:30What is your problem?
28:36It's a big difference.
28:37You didn't pay for that.
28:38A lot of times when you think about the fact that your daughter is very tight.
28:39And in a way, you don't take up to it.
28:40I think we're going to take you in a late night.
28:41And what are you doing?
28:42It's a big enough.
28:43What are you doing?
28:44Nobody's trying to look at it.
28:45When you're trying to figure out what you are going to get,
28:46And what is your fault?
28:47Why don't you are going to get,
28:48It's just not even more.
28:48Why don't you be allowed to do it.
28:53If you're trying to get,
28:55You're trying to get it to get it.
28:57I really do.
28:59That's a big enough.
29:00There's a big enough.
29:01You have to come.
29:02I'm going to go.
29:03You
