00:00Welcome to Bermuda, a small island paradise in the middle of the Atlantic.
00:07Seeing the turquoise waters, it does lift my mood.
00:10Go along the coast, okay? See you up there.
00:14A dedicated police service...
00:17Somebody's going to need to open this door up really quickly.
00:20...is keeping this British Overseas Territory safe.
00:25I think he wears the uniform very well.
00:27You want the $20 now?
00:29Officers, including Brits, doing their duty.
00:32It's tough. And it's really humid today.
00:37The reality is that there are challenges.
00:40Crime busting in a place where anything can happen.
00:44I didn't really expect the cows to run out the gate. Uh-oh.
00:49Going to great lengths to catch criminals.
00:54She's gone, gone. She's gone.
00:56Cannot make this up.
00:59With summer tourists arriving in droves.
01:02Woo-hoo!
01:03This is peak season for the police.
01:06Listen, baby.
01:07Calm down.
01:09I love policing. It's in my DNA.
01:12Coming up in Bermuda, the island goes cricket crazy for its national holiday.
01:22Kill me down, girl. Kill me down.
01:23It's a joyful time in Bermuda.
01:25Everybody's celebrating.
01:26Everybody's happy.
01:27Everybody's partying.
01:28There's an illegal substance at the airport.
01:32This is speculative not just for presser use, but also for intent to supply.
01:37And there is brawling on the beaches.
01:42Oh, buddy.
01:43I'm thinking this could turn out really quite badly.
01:47Every August each year is cup match.
02:05A public holiday centered around a huge game of cricket.
02:08Bermuda's national sport.
02:10It's the biggest and wildest event in the calendar.
02:15Ooh, cup match.
02:20It is like Bermuda's Super Bowl.
02:23Two teams, Somerset and St. George's, come together and they have a cricket match over two days.
02:35Thousands of locals come out.
02:38It's a joyful time in Bermuda.
02:40Everybody's celebrating.
02:41Everybody's happy.
02:42Everybody's partying.
02:44You see campsites all over the island, all on the beaches, all in the parks, everywhere.
02:52People are out on their boats.
02:55You can forget, honestly, that there's an actual cricket event going on.
03:02It is a lot.
03:04It's amazing.
03:05Love it.
03:06We're gonna win this year, I promise.
03:08Go home, sleep and do it again tomorrow.
03:11With the island off work and officially in party mode, it's all hands on deck for the police.
03:17Cup match is probably our busiest time of the year.
03:23He's coming through, excuse us, please.
03:26It's tough.
03:27Like, it is hot.
03:30You have people traveling with the bladed articles.
03:32You may have people drinking and they've been drinking all day.
03:36We prepare ourselves in advance mentally, physically.
03:41It can go left, as we say, very quickly.
03:46So you have to be on your toes.
03:49With crowds building, officers Derek Simmons and Duval Robinson are dispatched on a beach patrol in the east of the island.
04:04We'll just start with clear water, even make our way to Tobacco Bay.
04:13We're excited to work today.
04:15Well, they say it's double time on the holidays.
04:18So that is the most important thing.
04:20For some people.
04:25Whilst filling up before their beach tour, they get an urgent call to the airport.
04:31A male flying in from the US has been arrested at customs.
04:38It's suspicion of importation of a controlled drug.
04:43It's common for those from states in the US with more lenient drug laws to be arrested in Bermuda.
04:50They didn't realize the strict laws of Bermuda, and they find out by surprise.
04:57Bringing cannabis into Bermuda is illegal.
05:01And anyone caught at the airport with more than seven grams is automatically arrested.
05:07During a busy party weekend, this American has been caught with almost 130 grams.
05:13For officers Derek and Duval, instead of beach patrol, it's a journey to the police station.
05:20It's the first day of cup match, a two-day contest between St. George's from the east of the island and Somerset from the west.
05:41Officers Deshawn Chin and Talifa Simons are two of the 150 police out in force today.
05:50St. George's is the blue and blue team, so blue and light blue.
05:53And then Somerset is the red and blue team.
05:56It's pretty much from one island to the other.
05:59Everyone picks a side.
06:01I represent St. George's.
06:04Boo!
06:06I was born in St. George's, I was raised in St. George's.
06:09I'm a Somerset fan, as you can see, my red and blue, you know.
06:19It's 10am, time for the first ball to be bowled, with thousands in attendance.
06:24In he comes. The first ball of the cup match. Here he comes. Right time, over the ring.
06:33Drinking in public is not permitted in Bermuda, except here on cup match holiday, which might explain the high spirits.
06:42People have their own little campsites and have their own little parties.
06:46They would hire a DJ sometimes to come and play inside.
06:49They're consuming a lot of alcohol.
06:51So officers Dashaan and Talifa must be on their toes.
06:56Obviously there's thousands of people here.
06:59And we don't have thousands of police officers on.
07:01So our challenge is trying to be everywhere at one time to kind of disrupt any antisocial behaviour.
07:09So that's one of our biggest challenges.
07:11The aim is to keep the vibe joyous and respectful,
07:15because the first day of cup match is also emancipation day to mark the end of slavery on the island.
07:23Cup match is a time that we celebrate because it was when we were freed as black people.
07:29So the history of cup match really runs very deep for us.
07:33And that's why it's such a huge occasion every year.
07:36Bermuda attracts almost one million visitors a year, and never more so than during the cup match holiday.
07:51Bermuda's top cop is Commissioner Darren Simons.
07:59The reality is there are challenges.
08:01There are issues that police officers have to engage with, have to deal with.
08:06Fortunately, I think from a visitor perspective or people coming into our island, they rarely see that.
08:11Bermuda as a jurisdiction doesn't have much crime that's directed towards tourists.
08:19It's still very safe.
08:21Policing on the beaches is not something that your average UK police service is going to have to deal with,
08:26but it's one of the more difficult jobs that we have to deal with in Bermuda.
08:29I mean, I suppose there are worse things to do.
08:31Horseshoe Bay is the location for Beach Fest.
08:45An annual event for those wanting to celebrate on the sand rather than watching sport.
08:53With drinking in public also being permitted at this event for the cup match holiday,
08:58it attracts a younger crowd.
09:02The vibe is party. Partying really hard.
09:07Which is why the police are out in force.
09:10Brit officer Holly Levine-Smith graduated from training only days ago.
09:14She's a Beach Fest newbie.
09:17I don't really know what to expect, so I'm feeling okay.
09:22Hello, how are you?
09:23Fine, thank you.
09:24But I've heard this is one of the baptisms of fire, so we'll see how it goes.
09:29Officers, is it warm enough for you?
09:34She was a nurse in the UK for ten years before moving to Bermuda.
09:39Bermuda has some of the clearest beaches.
09:43The water is literally turquoise, crystal clear.
09:45When I first got off the plane, my husband and I both looked at each other and thought,
09:51how did we get this lucky?
09:57Officer Holly and her colleague Rajiv Bailey will need to keep their wits about them.
10:03We're near a big body of water with a lot of rip currents at the moment,
10:07so we don't want people drunk in the water. It's not safe, basically.
10:15As a former nurse, caring for others is something she's used to.
10:20She and Officer Rajiv need to make sure that all those drinking are aged 18 and above.
10:27As soon as the sun comes out in the UK, everyone is at the pub, everyone is drinking, having a great time.
10:33And you're living on an island where the sun is always out and the beach is always accessible.
10:39And so there's always going to be that feel-good party vibe.
10:43I think there is a difference there.
10:46What time did you guys get here?
10:48In the morning?
10:50So you guys are all over 18?
10:53If people have yellow wristbands, it means they are over the age to drink, so they can drink.
10:59So we're just looking out for people who don't have yellow wristbands and who are drinking.
11:05You look around, you see everybody's wearing the yellow wristbands to show that they're over 18.
11:09That was issued by, I believe that was Carter.
11:11You might want to get one, then you'll stop getting stopped.
11:14No-one's ever called me a party peeper.
11:16Yeah, no worries.
11:18But you possibly did feel a bit like that.
11:20There's a girl holding a Bricardi in a blue bottoms, red top, no wristbands.
11:26How old are you?
11:28I'm 17.
11:29You're 17?
11:30Why are you drinking alcohol?
11:32Because my mom gave me two.
11:33Where's your mother?
11:34I struggle with that sort of fight between police and nursing.
11:38Like, where is my line now?
11:40Where do I have to kind of step back and be like, okay, this is where St John's Ambulance takes over.
11:47So that is actually something I didn't think I would feel, but I felt quite strongly.
11:52Officer Holly's gentle bedside manner is currently keeping everything in check.
11:57It's all about communication.
12:00If you go in all guns blazing, then no-one is going to respond well to you.
12:04With the real work yet to come.
12:07Some of them have been out since six this morning, and it's now four, so it will start to hit them if it hasn't already.
12:28With the day's heat taking its toll, Officer Brydon Pedro and Shandora Burrows are out patrolling the middle of the island.
12:38Brydon has been in the police service for almost five years.
12:43I kind of have actually always wanted to be in the police service.
12:46I've always wanted to be, I guess, a helper, or someone who can give back to the community.
12:52One of the downsides would be, Bermuda can get very hot during summer.
12:58You have to really make sure you stay in shape so that you can run after someone when you need to.
13:03I still remember seeing quite a few of my partners, you know, or myself deck out.
13:10Halfway through a foot chase.
13:12You kind of just barrel through it and keep going.
13:15I've had a few fulls.
13:22But today they plan to be a little more static.
13:28They're doing traffic stops on one of Bermuda's busiest roads.
13:35So right now we're on Harbour Road, junction with Lovers Lane.
13:38We're going to do vehicle checks.
13:39We actually have our sergeant that's a little ways down.
13:42And if he sees anything that's suspicious or brings to our attention, he will tell us.
13:45And when the vehicle comes closer, we'll pull it over and we'll deal with it accordingly.
13:48The primary thing I look for when I'm on the road is for dangerous driving, cycles that are unlicensed or uninsured.
13:57Sometimes they're not in the right owner's name.
14:00And you really want to target those because if they're involved in the collision with someone else or they cause injury to someone else,
14:05you want to make sure that they're documented.
14:08And it's not long before they find the first offender.
14:12It expired in May 22.
14:17Yeah, I mean, you can't be driving on the road without license and insurance.
14:23Do you have any proof of insurance?
14:26I don't. Not on them.
14:28I can't provide any permission for you to ride the bike on license.
14:31Well, I'll walk it if you want me to.
14:33You're allowed to walk the cycle, but you can't ride it.
14:35A lot of people, you know, often comment, you know, why aren't you out there catching murderers?
14:41You aren't carrying any weapons or anything like that with you?
14:43Are you able to just pop your seat so I can just check underneath?
14:48They have to realize that a lot of people who commit serious offenses are members of the public too.
14:53They're going to be using effective methods of transport.
14:56You're good. You can put it back down.
14:59Am I able to just feel around your base to make sure you don't have anything?
15:01Yep.
15:03Okay, start.
15:06So the best thing for us is to be out there on the road.
15:0910-4, Charlie Zulu.
15:12You can find a lot about murderers by just simply being out there and being proactive
15:21and help reduce a lot of crime in Bermuda.
15:23There are no serious offenders on Earth today.
15:28But it turns out that this man has an outstanding warrant and fine
15:32for driving through a stop sign a few years back.
15:35Your vehicle is coming back to say the owner has a warrant.
15:38Do you know of any warrants that you may be aware of?
15:40Yeah.
15:41Any tickets that you might not have paid or anything?
15:44You have $50 on you?
15:46This man will be held in custody until he settles his debt to the government.
15:50So right now we are going to transport the driver to Hamilton Police Station to sort out a warrant.
15:57Follow him.
15:58Yeah.
15:59And thank you for your cooperation too.
16:10In the east of the island, officers Jen Iserdyke and Eddie Smith are also on road duty in the sun doing some speed checks.
16:18He's trying to target our speeders, our prolific speed racers as we call them.
16:25A lot of times, you know, most of our issues are road traffic collisions.
16:31Officer Eddie is an old pro with the speed gun and renowned for guessing a vehicle's speed, even before the results pop up.
16:41Generally speaking, if they're on this straight enough stretch and they're not had one to you, it takes a bit of that perception.
16:46Then, yeah, I can pretty much get within 5k of it.
16:49Years of experience.
16:54The last car is about 30, about 40?
17:0042.
17:02The last car is about the same, 40 or slightly below.
17:08Dodger.
17:09The national speed limit is 35 km per hour and this bike is going much faster.
17:18Is bike common?
17:1961.
17:23Just take your bike up there for me.
17:29Good afternoon, sir.
17:31Can you turn your bike off for me, please?
17:33So the reason that we stopped you today was for going 61, OK?
17:40The police may not be winning any popularity contests for handing out speeding fines.
17:45Can I have the next available court date, please?
17:47But Jen's sure it's for the greater good.
17:50We try and be proactive and get out there and just warn these guys to slow down because we don't want to see them scrolled out in the road or worse.
18:00Ride safe.
18:03It's 5pm back at Horseshoe Bay and some revellers on the beach have been drinking for more than eight hours.
18:25Watching them sort of deteriorate through the day, I'm thinking this could turn out really quite badly.
18:37Officer Holly may be laying down the law when it comes to drinking age, but as a newbie, she's not yet too confident doing it.
18:46People don't know this is like my third day on the job, so it's quite nerve-wracking.
18:53If you haven't got any adrenaline pumping on you when you're on patrol or walking along beach fest, there's something going wrong.
19:00Because you can become quite vulnerable quite quickly.
19:07There's lots of glass bottles on the floor that can potentially become weapons.
19:14My biggest fear was that things could escalate quite quickly.
19:18With rowdy behaviour rising in the sunshine, former nurse Holly is employing the gentle approach.
19:31Nice to meet you.
19:33Nice to meet you.
19:34Enjoy your holiday.
19:35Bye-bye.
19:36Bye-bye.
19:37There was a group here that I wanted to engage.
19:39But she knows there are limits.
19:41People can take advantage of a kind nature and take you down the garden path a little bit.
19:48I've experienced that.
19:49Excuse me.
19:50Hi.
19:51How old are you?
19:52I'm 16.
19:53You're 16.
19:54You're drinking alcohol.
19:56Can I see your ID?
19:59Okay.
20:00Okay.
20:01Why do you say you're 16?
20:03It's a joke.
20:04It's a joke.
20:05It's humorous.
20:06Very funny.
20:08The American humor, obviously.
20:10Sorry.
20:12So, Officer Holly is learning to bring out her tough side.
20:17Are you a softie?
20:18A softie?
20:19Yeah.
20:20Yeah, I am a softie.
20:22I've stopped crying so much because of this job.
20:27You do need to nip that in the bud quite quickly when you're on patrol.
20:32I'm still going to be a nice person.
20:33I'm still going to be kind and empathetic.
20:35But toughening up is something that I'm going to have to embrace.
20:39This job does desensitise you, doesn't it?
20:42A little bit, yeah, yeah.
20:43Yeah.
20:44But I think that's how you survive it.
20:46Otherwise, if we're all crying all the time, I don't think we'd get much done.
20:51You never get used to it.
20:53You just adapt to every situation differently with experience.
21:02Suddenly, Officer Holly might need her tough side.
21:06There's a report of a fight between two drunken men on the beach.
21:10You're trying to find where that fight is, and you're not really sure what direction to run.
21:24On sand, in the heat.
21:26You're hoping to get there in time.
21:28And what you're going to do when you get there, will you be able to control the situation?
21:33What's wrong?
21:35Is he OK?
21:37Thankfully, the situation has calmed considerably.
21:4010-16, it's not a genuine fight.
21:43Horseplay, two brothers.
21:46It looks to be like a fight.
21:49Too much alcohol.
21:51They're fine.
21:53Hey, you guys are able to get him off the beach?
21:55Get him home?
21:56Yeah.
21:57But getting the brothers safely away is easier said than done.
22:03They're both intoxicated.
22:06One's really drunk.
22:07Hey, hey, hey.
22:08Chill.
22:09Chill.
22:10Mind your arm.
22:11They're getting a little carried away.
22:24The brothers travel to beach fest by motorbike.
22:27Get off that bike now.
22:29But for their return journey, the police send them safely home in a taxi.
22:54Captain, Officers Derek and Duval are handing in the suspect, caught with cannabis at the airport, to custody Sergeant Dominique Simons.
23:02It's a really important thing is that you just treat people with respect and courtesy.
23:06The suspect is from New York State, where the drug has been legalized, unlike here. Officer Derek is bagging up the evidence.
23:15This is plant material. It's a homegrown illegal substance.
23:21Candace.
23:22This is speculative, not just for personal use, but also for intent to supply.
23:27So it is a large amount.
23:29A canine alerted to your luggage, which was sent to secondary search by Customs.
23:34They found three clear plastic vacuum sealed bags containing plant-like material with a total weight of 126 grams.
23:44We're going to send it off to the analysts and they would verify for sure what it is.
23:49You have a right to have somebody know that you're here.
23:51You've got a right to speak to the lawyer privately. You can do so in person or on the television.
23:55Custody Sergeant Dominique's job is to book in those arrested, but also to look out for them.
24:01You understand your rights, sir?
24:03Yes.
24:04Anyone coming here, it's not the best day of their life.
24:07It's definitely probably one of the worst days of their life, and I can appreciate that.
24:12Prisoner's welfare is very important here because it will dictate, hopefully, how they act whilst they're in the cells.
24:17It's not a fun place to be here, and I can really appreciate that.
24:21His good nature can sometimes be a hindrance to the job in hand.
24:25I'm trying to work on not smiling because I try to, I guess, put the best version of myself forward.
24:32What I'm realizing is some people find my smile offensive at times when they're in these types of situations.
24:38So I'm trying to work on that. It's still struggling because smiling is just something that I do naturally.
24:47Is that as cold in here as it is out here?
24:50It's, it's, it's, it's cold.
24:51It's changing.
24:52Oh, I got some pants in my bag. Can I put them on, please? Please?
24:57Sergeant Dominique develops concerns about the welfare of the detainee and decides to be extra cautious.
25:04Just gonna ask you some quick questions in relation to your health in the event that something happens to you whilst you're here.
25:10I was watching him on the camera when he went into the cell just to make sure that maybe he hadn't swallowed anything or something like that.
25:18And really, he only went in there just so he could have a moment to catch himself and just to kind of process what's about to happen to him.
25:24There's a lot of uncertainty of being in a foreign country and what our laws are and what our procedures are.
25:31So in these types of situations, I always try to explain to people that it's, at least you're here in Bermuda.
25:37You know what I mean? If you were in, in Brazil, Mexico, Thailand, Bali, their, their laws are completely different.
25:43They don't have the facilities that we do. They could hold you for longer. There's just, it's just better.
25:50Is it the best situation that you're here for whatever you're here for? Absolutely not.
25:53But if you had to pick somewhere to be, I'd pick him.
25:57The detainee is booked in before being bailed for a court date the following week.
26:02All in all, another smooth intake for Sergeant Dominique.
26:07As they drive back east, officers Derek and Duval get a chance to listen to the cricket, a big perk of working the cup match holiday.
26:22In he comes, right arm, over the big. And outside your stump. The ball out just outside your stump and free.
26:28Looking to push it to the covers, doesn't make contact. My goal is through to the wicket.
26:32I'm a Somerset fan. I'm St George's.
26:36No arguments at all.
26:38It's still friendly. It's still friendly.
26:40Yeah, yeah, yeah.
26:41It's all happening here at Somerset Cricket Club, as Zico purchased.
26:59Back at the ground, officers Dashaan and Talifa are still out patrolling the crowds.
27:05How are you, lovely? You all right? How are you?
27:11I would say the main challenge today is the sun. You know, the sun is taking its draw way too serious. It's very hot.
27:20After day one, Somerset have a big lead at the halfway point of the game.
27:28At this point, it's impossible for St George's to catch Somerset. I don't even think they're going to be in for another five, ten years.
27:36And with another scorching day left to play, St George's fans are left hoping for a miracle.
27:46Next time, the national holiday gets heated.
27:49Listen to what the police have to say. I didn't do anything wrong to anybody.
27:53And officers respond to a critical bike crash.
27:56Can you hear me?
27:57The only thing on my mind is, I have to save this person.
28:27What is a dream?
28:28He's a very ill.
28:29He's a good boy.
28:30See you guys.
28:31I don't know.
28:32I can only take a repentant stuff, but I don't even care.
28:34I won't be terrible.
28:35You know, be a ancient story.
28:36I want to say, look at everything.
