00:00Let's cross live to South African Parliament member and president of the African transnational movement, Vuyo Zungula.
00:07Welcome to the program. Can you share with us your thoughts on Zelensky's possible visit to South Africa?
00:14There already seems to be a lot of controversy about that within your country.
00:18Definitely. Look, Zelensky faces a legitimacy issue. He lacks legitimacy because he's refused to hold elections.
00:31He's refused to sign a peace deal with Russia.
00:34And he may try and run away from the fact that he does not have the mandate of the people of Ukraine because he's refused to go to elections.
00:43So he's coming to South Africa. He has no standing as a president or as a leader because he does not have a mandate.
00:53And surely this visit in our country has led to South Africans being against that particular visit on the grounds that he lacks legitimacy.
01:03And he's got a problem of not wanting to end the war in Ukraine that he started by inviting NATO to set up bases in Ukraine.
01:14Indeed, Zelensky's presidential term has expired and he refuses to allow elections due to the ongoing conflict.
01:20And Russia says it doesn't recognize him as president. You're calling him illegitimate as well.
01:25But could negotiations between South Africa and Zelensky leads to peace if Zelensky is illegitimate?
01:34It will never lead to peace.
01:36And also we need to maybe state the fact that Zelensky is not coming to South Africa on the ticket of wanting to hold or to have peace in Ukraine.
01:47He's coming here to drum up support from the global South and is only coming because the United States refused to fund him any further.
01:57So he's a person that is helping on continuing with the conflict.
02:01So this is not a trip on his side that is trying to promote peace.
02:06It is rather a trip that is undertaking so that he can gain some form of legitimacy and relevant in the global South.
02:14And some South African opposition parties such as MK and SACP have clearly said Zelensky is not welcome.
02:25What's the position of the African transnational movement on this matter?
02:31Definitely he's not welcome because he's a warmonger.
02:35He's an illegitimate president.
02:38His entire visit sparks of controversy.
02:40It has got nothing to do with the promotion of peace.
02:44It has got nothing to do with mending relations with Russia.
02:49It has got nothing to do with seeking the guidance or the advice of the global South.
02:55Because this Zelensky, when even the African presidents were in Ukraine, he undermined them.
03:02There was a lot of racism.
03:04So he's not coming to people that he regards as leaders who could provide solutions to the conflict in Ukraine.
03:12He is just coming on a ticket of trying to keep himself relevant.
03:16You'll recall that ever since the conflict started, he's been going around the different countries, touring.
03:22That is the only way in which he can remain relevant.
03:26And he can try and raise billions of U.S. dollars, the very same dollars which have been found unaccounted for.
03:35So this is nothing about peace.
03:37It is rather about him as a selfish individual that is only there to keep his relevance
03:44and wants to get some form of funding from other countries.
03:48And, you know, some members of South Africa's political opposition have denounced Zelensky as a NATO puppet.
03:54Is there any truth to that, do you think?
03:58Yeah, he's definitely a NATO puppet.
04:01Because from the first instance, we're in this position of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine
04:08because of him as a puppet who allowed NATO to break the commitments they made in the early 90s
04:17of not expanding their territory towards Russia.
04:21If it was not for Zelensky being a NATO puppet, there would be no conflict now.
04:27He's a NATO puppet that is unable to have any form of a backbone to take decisions in the best interest of the people of Ukraine.
04:37Because the people of Ukraine want peace.
04:39The people of Ukraine want, you know, the ties and the close relations with Russia to remain.
04:47It is Zelensky and his handlers that want this conflict to remain.
04:53So do you think South Africa should extend the same invitation to Vladimir Putin as it has to Zelensky,
04:58especially considering that Johannesburg is set to host the G20 summit this year?
05:03What do you think?
05:04Definitely, President Putin, firstly, is a democratically elected president of Russia.
05:12Secondly, he's a close ally of South Africa, which we share very, very cordial and longstanding relations
05:19with him as an individual, as well as Russia as a country.
05:23Therefore, there would be no form of any dialogue or peace if President Putin is invited to South Africa
05:32in order for South Africa to play any meaningful role in terms of achieving peace in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
05:42So in our view as a party and the country, the presence or the coming of President Putin in South Africa
05:48would go a long way in terms of ensuring and guaranteeing peace because peace cannot come,
05:54cannot be dictated or led by a warmonger that is Zelensky,
05:59but it can only be led by credible individuals that are having the mandate of their people.
06:05And such an individual, which is President Putin,
06:09is best suited to come to South Africa to hold such discussions.
06:12And what's your opinion of South Africa's efforts to try to end this conflict in Ukraine?
06:19Why are we seeing an African country putting in more effort than many European powers to end a conflict in Europe?
06:26Firstly, Russia has always been isolated by Europe
06:32because Russia in its DNA, in its culture, in its ideology,
06:37is not a country that has been involved in colonizing Africa,
06:42in undermining or looting the mineral wealth of Africa.
06:47It has been a country that respects, you know, Africa and all other countries.
06:53So this conflict that is happening there, the reason why Europe is not intervening in order to create peace,
07:01it is their long-standing prejudice against the people of Russia.
07:05So it is for that reason why countries such as China, such as in Africa,
07:12have took it upon themselves to try and solve this situation, this conflict,
07:17because of the isolation that Russia finds itself in,
07:21and not because Russia has inflicted pain on anyone.
07:26Russia has not colonized any country.
07:28It has not stolen the wealth of any country.
07:31It is those principles that other countries in Europe have decided to isolate Russia for.
07:38So it is for those reasons why the countries in Europe do not want this war to end,
07:44because the continued conflict between Russia and Ukraine works in their favor,
07:50because they are able to spread propaganda about Russia being a country that is an aggressor,
07:56whereas the actual truth is that Russia is only defending and protecting its territory and the people of Russia.
08:03Vujo Zungula, South African parliament member and president of the African transnational movement,
