00:00Let's cross live now to the chairman of the Botswana Movement, Democracy, Julius Baitometti,
00:04now joining us here live on RT International. Julius, it's so good to get you on the program.
00:08Thank you very much for your time. Thank you for joining us here.
00:11What do you make of the accusations put forward by the head of the U.S. Africa Command
00:16by making this public comment? What do you think Washington is actually trying to achieve, Julius?
00:21Thank you very much. Let me accept your invitation and stay to the point.
00:30I'm the chairman of the Botswana Movement for Democracy in Botswana in Africa.
00:35Africa has been very much silent about the interference of Western countries in its dealings,
00:43more especially in deciding who should be the leader, who should be the president and all that.
00:49But we all know this is due to the fact that Western countries are looking at and looting African resources.
00:57We have gained political freedom for years, 30 to 50 years.
01:02Now we feel it's time for Africa to gain economic freedom.
01:08So this is why we are standing with Captain Traore to say we can't allow as Africans what has been happening for years,
01:16whereby African leaders have been killed by Western leaders just because they refuse to be their puppets.
01:23Yeah, you know, I think that's a really good point.
01:25I was just going to say we all know, for example, what happened to Gaddafi in Libya, even Sankara in Burkina Faso.
01:31You know, it's interesting, isn't it?
01:32Because Burkina Faso, which is one of a number of countries there in the Sahel that has kicked out former colonial powers,
01:38and now they're kind of dishing out a new narrative.
01:41They're spinning a narrative, peddling and pushing that Traore is a bad man and the country is steeped in corruption.
01:47Am I stepping in what you're smelling here?
01:49Does that sound about right to you?
01:50Exactly.
01:54You see, the same narrative that is being used against Captain Traore is the same narrative that was used against Colonel Gaddafi.
02:01I mean, come on, we are well educated in Africa.
02:06We know if a leader is corrupt, if a leader is infringing on our democratic rights, we can speak for ourselves.
02:12So we don't need America, France, Britain, Western countries to come and meddle in our efforts as if you are children, as if you are toddlers.
02:22We can speak on behalf of our children, on behalf of our communities as political parties in Africa.
02:28So it's wrong for these Western countries to keep peddling the same narrative that was used against our previous leaders who they killed for their personal interests,
02:40or to loot African resources.
02:42Colonel Gaddafi comes to mind immediately.
02:45Yeah, yeah.
02:45And when he was killed, people who killed Colonel Gaddafi are still walking in the streets.
02:50They're still considered as, in their home countries, Western countries, as whatever, heroes, whatever.
02:56But in Africa, we know what Colonel Gaddafi was trying to do.
02:59He was a Pan-Africanist who wanted to see Africa dominating as it's supposed to be.
03:06Because we have had leaders who sold us to Western countries.
03:11Now, the current group of leaders in Africa are saying, enough is enough.
03:16And Captain Traore is leading from the front line.
03:21And we are coming behind him to support him.
03:23No matter if we have something or we don't have anything, we are supporting him.
03:27That is why, as the Bolsonaro Movement for Democracy, we wrote a letter in support of Captain Traore and the people of Burkina Faso
03:34and say to the whole of Africa, it's time to stand up.
03:37It's time to fight for our resources.
03:40It's time to fight for our minerals.
03:42Yeah, this is exactly what's going on with the Global South these days, Julius.
03:44The Global South is really raising its voice on the global stage.
03:49You might have heard of the Russian foreign minister at the BRICS meeting 24 hours ago in Rio.
03:53And he was saying that Africa needs proper permanent representation at the United Nations Security Council.
03:59The voices must be heard in a balanced manner.
04:03Meantime, when it comes about Western narratives going after Africa, I remember a story about a year ago, Julius.
04:09There was a story that Uganda suddenly discovered what was called the biggest gold deposit in the world.
04:14And within weeks, you heard Washington saying, you guys are anti-LGBTQ.
04:20You guys are this.
04:21You guys are that.
04:21We're going to have to bring you democracy.
04:24It's all about the mineral resources.
04:26But the political and media landscape, they sell, they peddle, and they push these narratives.
04:32Do you think solidarity, Julius, among African nations can help to counteract these perceived threats from Western nations regarding governance and regarding resource management?
04:43You guys, you think you're tough enough to join hands and kind of push back?
04:47Look, it's long overdue for African countries to stand together, to support one another.
04:56I mean, Europe countries, European countries support one another.
05:00Even if they are peddling a wrong narrative, Western countries, they always support one another.
05:06Why can't African countries support one another?
05:09We can only stand tall if we support one another.
05:12And talking about the Russian foreign minister, you see, from a very long time back, 60s and all that, we have always seen Russia helping Africa as a brother, not with the intention to loot out of Africa.
05:29I'm not saying Russia is perfect.
05:30We all have mistakes.
05:32But from a long time back, Russia has always stood with Africa for political freedom.
05:38So, for someone like the Russian foreign minister to be speaking on our behalf, we very much welcome it.
05:46But I want to emphasize to our African brothers, it's time we stand together.
05:50It's time we see each other as brothers and work together.
05:54Trade amongst African countries must be improved and emphasized.
05:59I mean, why should we take our oil, our minerals to Europe to be refined and come back to Africa at a very expensive price?
06:09Our brothers and sisters are dying trying to cross through the Mediterranean, going to Europe, because they're looking for jobs there.
06:17And the minerals are coming from Africa to create industries in Europe and in America.
06:22Why can't we create industries in Africa to make jobs, to create jobs for our people?
06:27It's also about trying to shake off the old shackles of old former colonial ghosts as well.
06:33And you guys are really trying to stand up on your own two feet and got nothing but respect for you.
06:37Julius Abaito-Metsi is chairman of Botswana Movement Democracy, joining us live here on RT.
06:42It's been a great conversation.
06:44Thank you very much for your time.
06:46Thank you very much.
06:47We need people like you because we have been, the Western media has been peddling lies about Africa.
06:52Yeah, it's time we get people who can give Africans a voice to say their stories in their own narratives.
06:59Yeah, Julius, exactly right.
07:00The mainstream media, the legacy media is basically dead in the water.
07:03That's why more and more people are watching channels like RT International.
07:06Julius, great to have you on, man.
07:08We'll see you soon.
07:09Thanks again.
