00:00Magic and strength, tempered by heart, I stand for peace.
00:04Here's a look at the brand new Mattel Creations, Matthew Universe,
00:06The Powers of Greyskull, Hero, The Most Powerful Wizard in the Universe.
00:24The Most Powerful Wizard in the Universe arrives in the Origins line for the first time
00:28with his iconic golden armor and red cape.
00:30He's prepared to fight the monsters and dinosaurs of Praeternia
00:33with a magical staff that can spin and open,
00:35allowing him to harness the good magic of the ancient wizards.
00:39Here's a guy that predates not only He-Man, but predates Eternia as well.
00:43Before we get a closer look at the Mattel Creations, Matthew Universe, Origins, Hero figure,
00:47let's take the tape measure and see how tall the figure stands.
00:49Now, this figure is only available from Mattel Creations site.
00:52The figure sells for $20, which is fine and good,
00:54but you also have to purchase as well the Club Greyskull one-year digital membership,
00:59which goes for $9.99.
01:00In the end, though, it's still a fairly inexpensive figure,
01:03and he's still available right now on their site.
01:06As for how tall the figure stands,
01:08you're looking at Hero being six inches in height,
01:10or roughly about 15 centimeters tall.
01:13Just speaking of He-Man, here's He-Man now.
01:15Similar style of bodies, though you probably can notice already
01:17that Hero has more of a cartoon face.
01:20Speaking of other heroes from other dimensions,
01:21here's also what the figure looks like with Sun Man.
01:25Grey, Hero's alter ego,
01:26does come included with both a mini-comic and a magical staff.
01:29Unfortunately, though, the entitled mini-comic is a hero's journey.
01:32And I will say, unfortunately, this journey
01:34ended up arriving with the comic corner curled like this.
01:38Now, I don't know if you noticed at the beginning of this review
01:40when I was trying to do my best to carefully unpack everything.
01:42Sure enough, the bag was sitting in,
01:44well, the comic was sitting inside of a bag.
01:45That kept the front protected.
01:47But you may have noticed also at the beginning of this video
01:49that the corner was tucked inside of a slit
01:52on the back of the cardboard.
01:53Well, the way that it was folded in like this,
01:55and you're probably saying to yourself,
01:56don't fold it anymore.
01:57Well, damage has been done, my friends.
01:59Look at the state of the corner.
02:01Could they not have found a better, more smarter way?
02:03I mean, it was already sitting inside of a bag.
02:05Could they not have just used a little bit of scotch tape?
02:08Some tape just to adhere it on the inside
02:09without having to feel the need to curl the corners.
02:13Either way, though, this probably would be the first and only time
02:15that we're going to be getting the included mini-comic.
02:17The mini-comic does tell the tale of Grey in his pre-eternia.
02:21Now, of course, he does acquire the magical staff,
02:23and with the magical staff, he becomes himself hero.
02:26Not that I would like to think I've spoiled this.
02:28This actually would have come from an abandoned 1987 Mattel toy line.
02:32We're going to talk more about that in a moment.
02:34Not only will I say the illustrations seem a little bit different,
02:36but it seems it could just be my old eyes playing tricks on me.
02:39That does seem like the font's a little bit smaller.
02:41Can you make that out?
02:42You probably can make it out because you have younger eyes than me.
02:45Yeah, yeah, I don't know what's going on with this mini-comic.
02:48I'm going to see if maybe I can put a couple of heavy books on top of this,
02:50see if I can flatten this out.
02:51It should not have arrived, especially this being a Mattel creations,
02:54not in the state that it was in.
02:57Luckily, at least the staff arrived in better conditions.
03:00I don't know if you also were paying attention.
03:01If you were, thank you for that, by the way.
03:03The staff itself actually sat inside this magical box.
03:07I don't think the box was necessarily made of magic.
03:08It was made of cardboard.
03:09It does open up, and of course, the bag would have been sitting inside.
03:12You know, I might see myself maybe using this box for something else.
03:16It's too cool of a box, even though you could easily recycle it.
03:19I'm sure I will find other purposes for this.
03:21In the meantime, though, let's put it off to the side.
03:23So the story of Hero is, he's essentially a Master of the Universe toy line
03:27that was going to be an expansion to the Master of the Universe in 1987.
03:30The powers of Greyskull was going to be set in Eternia's prehistoric past called Preternia.
03:35And essentially, he would have been the magical magician back in that day.
03:39The equivalent, sort of, of He-Man.
03:41Now, for him to wield his magic, he also required his staff.
03:45Now, staff is nicely recreating.
03:47Hero was also, at one point, going to be a prototype figure.
03:49It never really saw the light of day.
03:50I think the first time it only saw light of day was in the Master of the Universe Classics line.
03:55And it has made several appearances since.
03:56I think it also made an appearance in Revelation, where Hero appeared in that as well,
04:00with Wonder Bread He-Man.
04:01I know his name isn't Wonder Bread He-Man.
04:03Anyways, though, the staff itself can be held in his hand.
04:06He does actually have gripping hands already on the ends of his form,
04:09so you don't have to worry about swapping anything else.
04:10He holds the staff pretty well.
04:12The staff is nicely molded here in gold plastic.
04:15It doesn't look like there's any bit of marbling happening either as well.
04:18And with the staff, what you can do is you open up the ends.
04:21So each one of these are individually hinged.
04:23You just pry one down, pry one down.
04:26It's sort of like peeling an orange,
04:28or like one of those chocolate-covered oranges.
04:31Those things are disgusting.
04:32Just basically peel these all down.
04:34And now Hero has his magical staff.
04:36Well, he already had his magical staff before.
04:38This end does spin as well.
04:40They sort of do advertise that this thing also spins,
04:42but there's nothing at all that I can see, at least,
04:44that does spin on this,
04:46other than really this gemstone on the end.
04:48Now, you can either, of course, have it in his one hand,
04:51just basically take the guard,
04:53fit that in his hand that way,
04:54or you can also do this as well.
04:56You basically would just take the hand and have it held that way,
04:59and just have him basically gripping with both his hands.
05:02Being, of course, that he's a spellbearer,
05:04I'm going to find my way of probably displaying the figure like this.
05:08Looks pretty cool.
05:09He does also technically come with one other accessory,
05:11that being, of course, his cape.
05:13One issue I may have with this cape
05:15is the fact that it sits really loose on the figure.
05:17It doesn't attach necessarily on the back of his VAC chrome plastic.
05:21Had there been maybe a peg or something like that,
05:22I know most people probably would have wanted not to have a peg there,
05:25but unfortunately that, the cape sits really loose.
05:28It also, unfortunately, has just a very thin strand of plastic on here.
05:32Not that it's going to fray at all,
05:34but that's the only thing that's really keeping the cape at bay.
05:37For a head sculpt-wise,
05:38Hero does sort of look like the prototype figure
05:40that we've gotten from before.
05:41I say, again, prototype,
05:42there's images you can look at online
05:44of what Hero would have originally looked like
05:46before Mattel scrapped the line.
05:48The head sculpt looks pretty accurate,
05:49again, if you were to compare, say, with He-Man.
05:51Hero has certainly more of a,
05:53I don't want to say like a Disney look to him,
05:55but he certainly looks a little bit more cartoonier.
05:58Body-wise, though, of course,
05:59the arms seem obviously to be shared the same,
06:02as well as it could be said for the legs.
06:04Hero does have now his VAC chrome,
06:06I think it's VAC chrome plastic that they've used here.
06:08Really nice, shiny, metallic gold.
06:11Hero logo there featured on the front,
06:12blue trunks down below,
06:14and matching, of course, gold that he also has in his boots.
06:16Carefully packed, this guy was from Mattel,
06:18because they also put a little plastic insert in between his cape,
06:22so it wasn't going to be rubbing against this plastic.
06:23He also put a piece of plastic on either end of his ankles,
06:26just to ensure there was no wear there.
06:29For me, I'm probably going to be putting this guy immediately onto my shelf.
06:32If you were to one, say, for example, put this guy in a bag somewhere,
06:35I would worry that over time, this would probably start to rub and scuff.
06:39So be careful of this.
06:40If anything, if you don't plan to have this guy displayed on the shelf,
06:43maybe just put him back in the box.
06:44At least the way they designed the box is,
06:46everything basically can be repacked back in there.
06:48Yeah, the state of the comic is kind of sucky,
06:51but everything else basically can keep stored away
06:53until you decide you want to open up Hero another day.
06:56I just realized I rhymed.
06:57For the figure's articulation,
06:59Hero's head is going to work the same as He-Man's.
07:01It's going to rotate all the way around,
07:02and because he does technically have this little tomato buffer in between,
07:06it does prevent him then scratching any surfaces on the actual armor here.
07:10So the head rotates all the way around, yeah,
07:11it does look down, looks up, back and forth, back and forth, yeah.
07:15Arms rotate all the way around as well.
07:17You may also notice here as well that Hero has also these arm gauntlets.
07:21Now, technically, the gauntlets aren't only,
07:23well, they're not committed at all to the forearms.
07:25If you really remove the hands, for example,
07:27you can easily just slide these right off if you don't like the looks of those.
07:30Or again, if you want to maybe use it for another figure.
07:33A single hinge only in the elbow.
07:34You already know this, you know how it goes.
07:36Swivel back and forth on the forearm.
07:38The hands, again, rotate all the way around,
07:40hinging back and forth there as well.
07:41Hero's waist swivels back and forth.
07:43Yeah, the cape just kind of just gets in the way.
07:46Swivel back and forth goes the waist.
07:48Legs do split out.
07:49There's the ball joints there.
07:51You can move the legs forward.
07:52You can move the legs back.
07:53There's a swivel at the top of the thigh.
07:55I didn't notice, though, on my Hero,
07:56and it might only just be mine,
07:58is that the lower legs seem loose.
08:00Loose, especially on this leg right here.
08:02And I know, obviously, they've used this mold countless times already.
08:06Maybe there's mold degradation causing, of course,
08:08the result of the knees being loose.
08:10But I noticed, though, on my Hero's,
08:12his knees are a little loose.
08:13There's a rotation down below on the legs.
08:15And, of course, back and forth, up and down on the ankles.
08:18You can also rock them back and forth as well.
08:20Good-looking figure?
08:20Yeah, good-looking figure.
08:21Some may not be invested in the idea of getting Hero.
08:24I mean, one good thing is he's not sold out at all.
08:26At the time of doing at least this review,
08:29Hero is still very well available.
08:31And for $20, that's not bad.
08:32I know, technically, there's sort of a caveat that goes along with that.
08:35It's not just $20 alone.
08:37It's $20, and then you have to buy yourself
08:38the Club Grayskull one-year digital membership.
08:41It works out to be $9.99.
08:43Now, again, that's U.S. dollars for me, at least in Canada.
08:46I think when it was all in for both Hero, the membership,
08:49and, of course, yadda, yadda, yadda,
08:50all the shipping costs that went along with that.
08:52Hero probably set me back more, closer to $45.
08:54I probably would have spent that anyways
08:56if I had ordered him on eBay.
08:58If, though, you are a fan of the history of Eternia,
09:02predating, in fact, Eternia to pre-Eternia,
09:05yeah, Hero's a nice-looking figure.
09:06Now, again, he wasn't really available for the longest of times.
09:09At one time, he was an abandoned project by Mattel back in 1987.
09:13Since then, though, Hero has made some appearances,
09:16I mean, probably the most recognizable one in recent memory.
09:19Not only was he appearing in the 2009 Massey Universe Classics line
09:22by the folks over at the Four Horsemen,
09:24also, as well, he would have also appeared in Revelation.
09:28I think in the cartoon episode, he appeared in Revelation,
09:30along with, again, like the primitive He-Man,
09:33the Wonder Bread He-Man.
09:34I know most people don't, and he's not really technically Wonder Bread He-Man,
09:37if you follow the history of him.
09:38It's nice to finally have a Hero as part of my collection.
09:41I think for a long, long time, collectors really only just relied on prototypes.
09:45They tried to do their best to kind of makeshift and throw together
09:47their versions of Hero.
09:49Now we finally have the real deal.
09:51And for what the price is going for right now,
09:53it's not a bad figure to be picking up at all.
09:55Some may not have liked the idea that Mattel hid the Hero behind a subscription wall,
09:59and the only way to get this figure was to spend the $9.99.
10:02For me, at least, the way I looked at it was $9.99.
10:06It's not just going to be giving you the Mattel Creations exclusive figures,
10:09which, for that matter, I've already got my money back
10:11because I also picked up the cartoon collection Vault-Tec.
10:13Yeah, we're going to be looking at him in another review as well.
10:16But also, too, like, you can still also purchase Mattel Master Universe figures over there anyways.
10:21And so I did save some money on a couple of other figures.
10:23I also picked up the Skeletor's Panther.
10:25Oh, look at me, just giving everything away.
10:27So for me, like $9.99 for figures that I would have still tried to track down anyways.
10:32And likely for Hero, I probably would have spent more for him trying to pick him up through eBay.
10:37So for a $20 figure, $9.99 on top of that for the membership sign-on.
10:42For a $20, $30 figure, for me at least, it was probably like $45 when it was all said and done.
10:47That's still, again, what I probably would have ended up paying for Hero on eBay.
10:50And again, I still get myself the options to pick up other Mattel Creations exclusive.
10:55What do you guys, though, think of Hero?
10:57Do you feel like a figure like this should have been more store-released rather than being exclusive to an online site?
11:02You have to also kind of think, too, like certain figures would have sold better than others.
11:06He-Man and Skeletor were sold fine and good in brick-and-mortar stores.
11:10But a character like Hero, the cost of course producing so many more numbers to match the POs,
11:15maybe a figure like this would have ended up sitting on the shelves as peg warmers.
11:19Let me know what you guys think of the figure down below in the comments section.
11:21And if you've also signed up for Mattel Creations and how have you already used this subscription sign-on.
11:27If you guys also did enjoy this video, you can do it as a saw and throw it a like.
11:30You guys want to stick around for more so?
11:31I hope so.
11:32But look at this guy anyway.
11:33So you've already kind of given away everything that we're going to be looking at during this week.
11:36Panthor, yes, we're also going to be looking at the Cartoon Collection, Vault-Tac,
11:40all the Mattel Creations stuff that I've just picked up recently.
11:43We're also going to be looking at them all during this week.
11:45If you also want to get your fix in for other Mattel stuff, or more specifically Master Universe,
11:50there's playlists that will be popping up at the very end of this video.
11:53But yeah, hit the subscribe, turn on that bell.
11:55Most important thing, of course, is that you're always coming back.
11:57As always, thanks for watching.
11:59See you guys next time.
12:06See you next time.
