00:00Extreme storm chaser Aaron Jajak following this latest blast winter storm moving through the Mid-Atlantic
00:07He's joining us right now from Washington DC with an update go ahead
00:14Yeah, hey guys I am in Washington DC
00:17I think there's no doubt about it when you see this building back behind me in the Washington Monument
00:21Looking like I'm in a snow globe right now as the snow continues to dump here in the nation's capital
00:27We were expecting that three to six inch snow range or so and I would say already in these open areas
00:32We're approaching that four inch mark. So
00:35Significant snow coming down here in DC. They've been treating the roads all day laying salt down all across the town
00:41In fact, they've actually already started to clean up the snow. So they've run the running plows
00:46They're moving the snow and the slush off the streets running snow blowers and shovels on the sidewalk
00:51So not waiting for it all to pile up because we are expecting to get more snow. This isn't over yet
00:56We still have several more hours at least of the snow coming down through the overnight hours
01:01And again, as I mentioned we were probably in that four inch range
01:04So I've already basically met the lower end of the range that we were looking at here in Washington DC continuing to snow here
01:12Roads are going to be difficult to travel on so you're good best to stay indoors
01:15Thankfully, we're past the rush hour the peak of rush hour. Most folks are home right now
01:20Hopefully enjoying the snow but surprisingly lots of people out here in Washington DC walking around here at the monument
01:28Usually at this time of night most people are headed out of the out of the city
01:31But I think people are out enjoying this beautiful snow here
01:35This is one of the best places to experience a winter storm in my opinion in the world is right here in the nation's capital
01:42Washington DC with all these lights and beautiful monuments here in the in the nation's capital
01:47Well, I will be tracking the storm here through the evening into tomorrow as well for you all for AccuWeather
01:52I'm Aaron J. Jack back to you guys
01:55All right, Aaron. So we were watching your video earlier before the snow started
01:59It looked like that those crews in Washington DC were just dumping
02:03Salt across the roadway. So how much of a difference in your estimation has that salt made it to the roadways?
02:10They're in our nation's capital
02:12Yeah
02:15For sure, you know and some of the roadways I was on it looked like it had already snowed
02:18There had been so much salt dropped on the roadways
02:21It did hold off the snow for quite some time
02:23Some of the roadways where they really packed the salt down on the road
02:27Stayed wet for a couple of hours after the snow fell
02:30But now there's this the steady snow has been falling heavy snow heavy steady snow
02:35I would say in the one inch approaching the two inch per hour snowfall rates has
02:39Overtaken the salt on the roads even you've got a slushy nasty mess here and all the streets across
02:45Washington DC, so thankfully things aren't too bad traffic's moving pretty well
02:50All right, good stuff Aaron. We appreciate you reporting as always there in Washington DC the number to beat 7.2 inches
02:56That's what fell on one day back in early January. Are we going to do it today tonight?
03:00It's gonna be a close call here Aaron mentioned four plus already there at least unofficially
03:05And we have plenty more hours to go here into DC
03:08We're about midway through the event in Washington DC look at the heavy snow down in Salisbury, Maryland
03:13That's a deep blue the reflectivity there indicating some big chunky wet flakes coming down
03:18They're accumulating well now with that said the rain snow line is taking a little step across areas like Ocean City
03:24Seeing some mixing there after a great snowy start there in Ocean City meanwhile Bethany Beach and Cape Henlopen and across the bay into South
03:31Jersey, it's all snow there
03:33But also we were looking at this little feature here on the map 30 minutes ago
03:37It's still holding together
03:38Okay
03:39With a little bit of an enhanced snowfall rate there right over York PA the south side of York
03:44and some areas near Gettysburg a little bit south of Gettysburg and the southern half of Lancaster County Quarryville and
03:50Willow Street and so forth so we're gonna keep an eye on that, but the the main event here certainly
03:55Washington DC
03:56Dale City Falls Church down into Woodbridge and other areas here nearby where again the the northern neck here
04:04Seeing some widespread widespread snow there. That's coming down pretty heavily and Baltimore. You're not exempt from this
04:09We've been spending a lot of time in DC
04:11Baltimore you're seeing almost as much as Washington DC still high impacts into Baltimore County up into areas near Harford County
04:18and into Cecil County, Maryland
