00:00Good day and welcome to the Gulf News Update for Monday, May the 2nd.
00:06Here are the top stories at this hour.
00:08Passengers set sail from Miami on a historic cruise to Cuba, the first in decades to depart
00:13from a U.S. seaport for the communist island nation.
00:16Carnival Corporation's 704-passenger Adonia left port at 4.24 p.m. on Sunday, bound for
00:24Havana and carrying several Cuba-born passengers.
00:27The cruise comes after Cuba loosened its policy banning Cuban-born people from arriving
00:32in the country by sea.
00:35Around 10,000 cases of stroke were reported in the UAE in 2015, of which nearly 2,000
00:42people would have likely died if proper care were not extended to them.
00:46The study by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation shows that the average age for incidents of
00:51stroke is 45 in the UAE compared to the worldwide average of 65.
00:58Fresh airstrikes pounded Syria's Aleppo city early today as U.S. Secretary of State John
01:03Kerry arrived in Geneva in a bid to halt the mounting carnage.
01:08More than a week of fighting in and around Syria's second city has killed hundreds of
01:13civilians.
01:14It was not clear if the raids on the rebel area were conducted by Syrian or Russian jets.
01:21On stage, Prince was still captivating audiences at recent performances in Australia and California
01:27weeks before his death on April 21.
01:30But offstage, the pop legend began wanting meals that were easier to digest and was fighting
01:36off waves of sore throats and frequent upset stomachs, the musician's personal chef said.
01:41Investigators are now looking into whether Prince died from an overdose and whether a
01:46doctor was prescribing him drugs in the weeks beforehand.
01:50Finally, the weather.
01:51Today's high across the UAE will be 32 degrees Celsius, dropping to 24 degrees at night.
01:57That's all for now.
01:58Thanks for watching.
