00:00In Palestine, thousands of displaced people began to return to their homes in the north
00:14of the devastated Gaza Strip after Israel opened the Net Zarim corridor.
00:22A new caravan of migrants departed from the northern border of Mexico to the United States
00:26in search of the so-called American Dream.
00:32And the Argentinean Círculo Podemos will file a complaint Monday against President
00:37Javier Milet for several crimes related to public intimidation and threats.
00:44Hello and welcome to From the South, I'm Alejandra Garcia from Telesur Studios in Caracas, Venezuela.
00:50We begin with the news, stay with us.
01:06In Palestine, thousands of displaced people began to return to their homes in the north
01:10of the devastated Gaza Strip after Israel opened the Net Zarim corridor.
01:15Most of the displaced people returned on foot through Al Rashid, a street of at least
01:20seven kilometres that stretches from the south to the north of the Strip, and that
01:25has witnessed dozens of massacres during the 470 days of the conflict.
01:30The ceasefire agreement between Hamas and resistance movement and Israel came into force
01:36on January 19th and establishes that the Gazans will be able to cross the Net Zarim corridor
01:42to return to the north of the Palestinian enclave from Sunday.
01:46As of October 7th, 2023, the Zionist forces of Israel caused the displacement of more
01:52than 85% of the citizens of Gaza in the midst of a massive and unprecedented destruction
01:58of infrastructure and property of citizens.
02:04It's a great feeling when you come home to your family and see your house, if you still
02:08have one.
02:11Meanwhile, thousands of people are still waiting off Saladin Street to gain access to the northern
02:19Gaza Strip and return to their homes.
02:25We are sitting here until they open the road for us and we return to our homes.
02:29Children slept in the cold.
02:31We dismantled the wood from the tent and lit a fire with it to warm ourselves.
02:36We were waiting for this moment for Gaza and to go back to it.
02:40Last night was very tough.
02:43The cold was very intense.
02:45We are waiting here until they open the road.
02:48We return to our homes in the north of the Strip.
02:56I am from the Al Shadi camp.
02:58Of course we hope to return to our homes.
03:00I have been displaced for one year and three months.
03:03We visited all the places during the period of displacement.
03:06When we heard the news that the army would not allow us to return to Gaza, we felt very
03:10sad and we hope in God that we will return to Gaza.
03:13It was a very difficult night.
03:15We were freezing cold.
03:18My joy when I heard the news of my return to Gaza was indescribable.
03:23We want to show the enemy that we are firm and, God willing, we will be victorious.
03:28We have been here since last night and we have been in the south for a year and a half.
03:32The Palestinian resistance movement Hamas announced the release of three Israeli prisoners
03:37in the coming days, as stipulated in the ceasefire agreement.
03:41The Palestinian movement notified mediators of the list of prisoners to be handed over
03:45in exchange for Israeli troops, allowing the return of displaced Palestinians to northern
03:50Gaza.
03:51Among the prisoners is Arbel Yehud, along with two other detainees who will be released
03:56this Thursday, January 30th.
03:59An additional three detainees will be released on Saturday, February 1st.
04:04Israel is expected to free 400 Palestinian prisoners on Saturday as well.
04:14In Palestine, hundreds of Gazans are going on a long and exhausting journey to return
04:19to their homes in the Northern Strip.
04:21Let's see the following coverage of our collaborator, Huda Hegassi.
04:25Finally, the most expected time has arrived since the truce and the end of war were proclaimed
04:34in the Gaza Strip, the time in which Gazans could go home to the northern area.
04:40I am now at the Netzarim checkpoint, which is split the north from the south in the Gaza
04:45Strip, that today, at 7 a.m. in the morning, Israeli forces have withdrawn to allow Gazans
04:53to return home.
04:56As we can see on this path, the journey will be by foot.
05:01Gazans have arrived very early in the morning at this place to go to the northern area.
05:10And even as we can see here, there are drums of water provided by the International Red
05:15Cross for people to drink because the journey is very exhausting and long.
05:22And so, despite this, Gazans are not afraid and not sure that they will do everything
05:27at their hands to go finally to their homes, even though the journey be complicated.
05:35We have to say that at this checkpoint, they will allow the exit and return of Gazans,
05:40so those Gazans from the south could go to the north and those from the north could go
05:45to the south and even to the center.
05:49And the journey, the path is partially opened, and as we can see, the joy of Gazans is unspeakable.
05:58So at the end, they will finally go to their homes, to the northern area, which they have
06:02been deprived of for 15 months.
06:08The city of Gaza is my life.
06:10It is everything to me.
06:11It is true that a lot of destruction and a lot of work awaits us, but it doesn't matter.
06:16Even if I have to pitch a tent where my house used to be, the important thing is that we are back.
06:26Thank Allah we are back, but the truth is that we are very tired.
06:29If Allah helps us, I will soon be back home.
06:32We wanted to come back a long time ago, but it hasn't been possible until now.
06:36I want to return home, to my land, with my people.
06:41As we have heard, Gazans are very happy to return to the northern area, finally.
06:48And they assured that this is a historical day for the history of Palestine, in which
06:53they finally could go to the northern area, that area that they have been able to go since
07:00the genocidal war of Israel.
07:02And they assured that despite destruction and the losses of all their belongings and
07:07houses, they assured that they will go there and rebuild everything the Israeli army has
07:13destroyed since the onset of war.
07:16In Sudan, Army Chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan visited the recaptured military headquarters
07:21in downtown Khartoum.
07:23This was the military leader's first appearance since government forces claimed to have broken
07:28a month-long siege by the rapid support forces.
07:31Accompanied by senior military commanders, Burhan prized the resilience and sacrifices
07:36of soldiers who defend the army's general command for 20 months, and vowed to eradicate
07:42the paramilitary forces.
07:43The war, triggered by a power struggle between the army and the RSF, has killed tens of thousands
07:50of displaced people, displacing millions and plunged the country into a humanitarian crisis.
07:58The Sudanese people stand behind the army, and we are all witnessing now how the entire
08:03people is supporting us in this battle.
08:05This battle is nearing its end, and these rebels, the rapid support forces, shall cease
08:09to exist.
08:10We pledge to the Sudanese people that we'll keep fighting until we achieve this.
08:19And now we have a short break coming up, but first remember you can join us on TikTok
08:23at Tell Us Your English, where you'll find news in different formats, news updates, and more.
08:28We'll be right back, stay with us.
08:35Welcome back to From the South.
08:51The Russian government has stated that any Western force sent to Ukraine without Moscow's
08:56approval would become a legitimate military target.
08:59Russian authorities denounced that the proposal for the creation of the so-called peacekeeping
09:03forces in Ukraine is aimed at preventing CAIF from suffering further defeats while
09:09maintaining its position of not negotiating with Moscow.
09:13The Russian statements come in response to a proposal made by the European Union military
09:17committee that a ceasefire in Ukraine should be imposed with the intervention of so-called
09:23peacekeepers.
09:24These statements are in line with calls by the CAIF government to deploy at least 200,000
09:30European troops to force Moscow to halt its special operation to demilitarize Ukraine.
09:39In southern Poland, a tremor in a coal mine in the city of Ratlin killed one worker and
09:45injured 11 others.
09:46This Monday, Polish mining group PGG reported a tremor at a depth of 800 metres.
09:53According to the mining company's report, 29 employees were in the area of the incident.
09:58After rescue work, the 11 injured were taken to the nearest hospital.
10:03In this context, the head of the emergency medical services of Katowice said that at
10:08least four of the injured are in serious condition.
10:11Authorities added that work continues to determine the total damage and secure the area.
10:20A new caravan of migrants departed from the northern border of Mexico to the United States
10:24in search of the so-called American dream.
10:27Close to 3,000 foreigners left Tapachula, Chiapas after President Trump cancelled the
10:33CBP-1 application last Monday.
10:36The migrants seek to move forward in the hope of being allowed to cross into the United
10:41States and in case they cannot cross, they want to reach Mexico City or Monterrey to
10:46look for jobs.
10:48With only a week as head of state, Donald Trump ordered several measures against illegal
10:52migration, among them deportations, while Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum opened
10:57the possibility of regularising foreign migrants or repatriating them.
11:06The President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, announced having submitted a proposal for
11:10reforming the constitution to safeguard 59 corn breeds and ban the sowing of genetically
11:17modified corn.
11:21Today, here in Puerto Escondido, I would like to inform you that the constitutional reform
11:27for safeguarding our corn has already been sent to the Congress of the Union.
11:31It is a reform to Article 4 and Article 27 of the Constitution, which establishes corn
11:36as a national identity, an element of national identity, and concurrently, the prohibition
11:41to plant transgenic corn in our country, and to ensure that it is through agro-ecological
11:45techniques, that is, free of transgenics.
11:54Likewise the head of state, Claudia Sheinbaum, emphasised that corn is a Mesoamerican heritage
11:59that has fed millions of people inside and outside of Mexico.
12:07It's 59 breeds that have been found so far, which are a fundamental element of our country,
12:12of our history, of our people, they had been created here, in Mesoamerica.
12:17This marvellous Mesoamerican plant stemmed from wild plants, such as the Tia Cintal,
12:21which we Mexicans domesticated, and we feed with it, and a good portion of the world feed
12:25with it as well.
12:34Nearly 1,000 people have been arrested in the United States for allegedly being in the
12:38country illegally amid mass deportation of migrants.
12:42According to the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement, ICE, the raids took
12:47place this Sunday in cities such as Chicago, Denver and Dallas, where people will be examined
12:52to determine their immigration status.
12:55At least 1,300 people have been arrested and deported from the United States in the first
12:59wave of immigration raids.
13:01In response to the measures imposed by the Trump administration, thousands of people
13:06have gathered in several U.S. cities to protest against his immigration policies.
13:12U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hexeth said Monday that the military will keep assisting President
13:20Donald Trump's mass migrant deportations.
13:23He guessed that, confirmed by Republicans despite concerns over his inexperience and
13:28alleged record of heavy drinking and domestic violence, is one of Trump's most contested
13:35cabinet picks.
13:36The former news host made clear that he will work to carry out the president's hard-right
13:42agenda.
13:43Hexeth added that more executive orders are coming on removing diversity, equity and inclusion
13:51programs from the Pentagon and restricting troops who were pushed out because they failed
13:56to comply with COVID-19 vaccine mandates.
14:03of mass deportations in support of the president's objective.
14:06That is something the Defense Department absolutely will continue to do.
14:09And today, there are more executive orders coming that we fully support on removing DEI
14:16inside the Pentagon, reinstating troops who were pushed out because of COVID mandates,
14:22Iron Dome for America.
14:24This is happening quickly.
14:25Our job is lethality and readiness and war fighting.
14:30We're going to hold people accountable.
15:00Welcome back to From the South.
15:13In Venezuela, the National Electoral Council announced that this year's parliamentary
15:17and regional elections will be held on April 27th.
15:20The president of the electoral body, Elvis Amoroso, said that the electoral process includes
15:25the election of deputies to the National Assembly, governors and legislators for the
15:30legislative councils of each state of the country.
15:33Amoroso also detailed that in the next hours, the electoral timetable will be published,
15:38which establishes processes such as nomination, acceptance and candidacies and the beginning
15:44of campaigns.
15:45Likewise, the National Electoral Council assured that they will warranty to all political parties
15:50the highest reliability, transparency and corresponding audits in accordance with the
15:55provisions of the laws of the country.
16:03The National Electoral Council calls for a comprehensive electoral process.
16:24That includes elections for members of the National Assembly on 27 April 2025 and elections
16:31for state governors and members of state legislative councils on April 27th, 2025.
16:45The Argentinian Circulo Podemos will file a complaint Monday against their president
16:50Javier Millay for several crimes related to public intimidation and threats.
16:55According to the details of the lawsuit, the Argentinian president will further be charged
17:00before the courts for instigating crimes and violating the laws stipulated in the country
17:04against discrimination.
17:06The complaint was initiated after Javier Millay issued a series of threats and derogatory
17:12comments from the United States and Switzerland against left-wing militants.
17:17On his comments, Millay stated that he will look for any leftist people with the goal
17:22of exterminating them.
17:29Public Argentinian workers are expecting a new wave of layoffs by the Millay's administration.
17:35Employees denounce that the Argentinian government is preparing to reduce public sector expenses
17:39by up to 30% with minimum allocations.
17:43Such a coercive policy will be pursued at the brink of the campaign for legislative
17:48elections.
17:49The State Workers' Association presided by Rodolfo Aguiar indicated that the State Union
17:54will oppose the adjustment by the Ministry of Deregulation and Transportation.
17:59The movement recalled that President Millay has been renewing the 2023 public budget for
18:05two time periods, which led in 2024 to some 36,000 workers layoffs due to the lack of
18:11updating and policy of dismissals.
