00:33to be formally arrested.
00:36Hello, welcome to From the South, I'm Luis Alberto Matos, from Televisa Studios in Havana,
00:43Cuba.
00:44We begin with the news.
00:59More than 4,000 truckloads of humanitarian aid has begun to enter the Gaza Strip through
01:08the Rafah border crossing in Egypt.
01:10The United Nations Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East reported that the trucks
01:14are loaded with food, drinking water, medical supplies, hygiene products and tents, while
01:19hundreds more remain in the border area awaiting authorization to cross.
01:23According to the Truce Agreement, some 600 trucks of aid are expected to enter Gaza daily,
01:29including 50 with fuel.
01:30On the other hand, Egyptian authorities have reportedly put on alert hospitals and medical
01:34teams to receive the wounded and sick coming from Gaza during the ceasefire.
01:41Meanwhile, Gazans celebrate the agreement between Hamas and Israel, which came into
01:49force on Sunday after 15 months of Zionist genocide in the region.
01:53In the streets of the devastated city of Gaza, the citizens have expressed their hope to
01:58move forward and that the Israeli troops will finally stop the bombardments.
02:02Gazans were also happy to be reunited with their relatives retained by the occupation
02:06troops in the framework of their illegal raids carried out since October 2023.
02:14And this place Gazans begin to go back home after the ceasefire agreement signed between
02:19Hamas and Israel came into effect on Sunday.
02:27I live in Rafah, from North Rafah, which is right there.
02:31We are returning to our house with the favor of God I just came to record some videos and
02:36I will return with all my family.
02:38We will open the door of our house again, here I have the keys.
02:43I ask God to help those who lost their homes to recover them there isn't a more beautiful
02:47feeling than coming back home and being stable, there isn't a better feeling than stability.
02:52With God's favor we are going to rebuild everything that was destroyed, we didn't lose hope.
02:57May God bless all of you.
02:59My chest is overwhelmed with joy.
03:01Joy invades me all over.
03:03I have been displaced since the fifth month.
03:05I had to leave in May.
03:07My brother also came to this area.
03:09It is the first time I come back.
03:11It is true that the images are terrifying but with God's favor we will build everything
03:15again.
03:18The commander-in-chief of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, Hossein Salami, described the implementation
03:23of the ceasefire in Gaza as a historical victory.
03:30We hope that today, if, unlike its usual conduct, the Zionist regime keeps its promise, the
03:36barrage of fire against the oppressed people of Gaza will have ceased, and a historic and
03:41decisive victory will have been achieved, serving as a great lesson.
03:45We hope that history and humanity learns that ultimately righteousness triumphs over falsehood,
03:50no matter how vast the imbalance in arms and equipment may be.
03:55The Palestinian resistance movement Hamas releases the first three Israeli prisoners
04:00in line with the agreements reached with Israel for the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
04:04In exchange for the three Israeli citizens, Tel Aviv promised to release 90 Palestinian
04:08women who are illegally detained in Israeli prisons.
04:12According to the Red Cross sources, the women held by Tel Aviv will be transferred to the
04:17Ofer prison to be evaluated and identified by medical personnel.
04:22According to authorities, a total of 1,890 Palestinian hostages are expected to be released
04:27by Israel during the first phase of the exchanges.
04:34And Golan authorities warn that cholera is spreading in several provinces of the country,
04:39after cases were reported in at least four territories.
04:42The health authorities report that so far 536 cases of the disease have been registered
04:48and only two of them are women are in stable condition.
04:53They also inform that there are at least 28 deaths ages 2 to 76 years old.
04:59The Ministry of Health and other agencies are working to control the outbreaks of the
05:04disease before April, when the probable increase in rainfall is bound to influence the spread
05:09of the disease.
05:13We now have a first short break coming up, but first remember you can join us on Tiktok
05:17at TELUS for English, where you'll find news in different formats, news updates, and
05:21much more.
05:22We'll be right back, stay with us.
05:34Welcome back.
05:35Here you've received another 217 police officers from Kenya, despite the lack of resolve shown
05:40by the contingents deployed in the fight against violence by criminal groups.
05:44With the mediation of the United States, Canada, the Organization of American States, and the
05:48United Nations, more than four countries have sent security agents and weapons to the Caribbean
05:53nation.
05:54However, violent criminal groups continue to gain ground, especially in Port-au-Prince,
05:58the country's capital.
06:00With the addition of this contingent, the African nation exceeds 600 agents deployed
06:04in Haiti, while displacement, sexual violence, and hunger continue to increase.
06:13The first Economic Cabinet of 2025 was held in Venezuela, where new policies were evaluated
06:19based on economic strengthening with emphasis on the defense of workers' purchasing power.
06:24The meeting was headed by the nation's Executive Vice President, Celso Rodriguez, who informed
06:29that according to the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean, the economy
06:35grew 62% and not 4.2% as initially projected.
06:41Rodriguez highlighted the strengthening of production and the increase in consumption
06:45in Venezuelan households, and affirmed that the defense of the purchasing power of workers
06:49will be the central issue of the Venezuelan government's agenda throughout 2025.
06:54The year 2025 will be to defend the purchasing power of workers, above all difficulties,
07:06and to maintain the extraordinary mechanism, one of a kind, of indexation of workers' income,
07:12so that its purchasing power does not lose value.
07:15Meanwhile, the death toll from violence unleashed by ang groups in Colombia has risen to 58,
07:22while thousands more flee their homes.
07:25According to authorities, the clashes between the National Liberation Army and Structure
07:2833 of the former Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia have affected mostly the region
07:33of Catacombo.
07:36Around 1,200 people from that region have reportedly fled to the city of Cúcuta, while
07:41others have moved to the Venezuelan state of Zulia.
07:44Authorities have informed that the country's military forces have reinforced their intelligence
07:48actions to control the violence in the region.
07:55And in Ecuador, Juan Francisco Román, Secretary-General of the Republic, informed that Verónica Abad,
08:01Vice President of the country, will travel to Turkey as part of the diplomatic task assigned
08:05by President Daniel Novoa.
08:07The Secretary-General further stated that this measure was taken to ensure that there
08:12are no limitations on Abad's performance of her duties.
08:16The government's decision to send the Vice President to Turkey is a response to the
08:20consultation made by Abad regarding Executive Decree 490, which reinstated her in her position.
08:27In addition to this, it was learned that the executive would also be paid the unpaid remuneration
08:33since November 9, 2024, when she was suspended from her functions for 150 days.
08:44Currently in the heart of Rio de Janeiro's rapidly gentrifying court district, a victory
08:49for a group of local housing rights activists has taken on national significance.
08:54Our correspondent Brian Muir has more.
08:58Nine years ago, a coalition of housing movements in Rio de Janeiro coordinated with hundreds
09:02of landless working class people to occupy an abandoned government social security building.
09:08This year, they celebrate the occupation's anniversary, knowing that they've successfully
09:12pressured the government to fulfill their constitutionally guaranteed right by transforming
09:17the building into ownership-based social housing.
09:23I've been involved in this process since the very beginning, long before we occupied the
09:27building.
09:28It started as a collaboration between three social movements, the CMP, the MLB, and the
09:34UNMP, who got together and kicked the door in so 28 families could live here.
09:41The Paulo Gianetti occupation is on the forefront of the battle against gentrification.
09:46Located in Rio's port district, which has been designated a special development zone
09:50for big real estate companies, it's surrounded by museums, art galleries, and new middle
09:56class housing developments, which have been forcing out the neighborhood's working class
10:00residents.
10:01Despite empty promises by the mayor's office, the occupation represents the only social
10:06housing initiative in the neighborhood.
10:08But it's not just about housing.
10:13We operate a soup kitchen for people who live on the street.
10:17We have a communications group.
10:19The landless rural workers movement supports us politically.
10:24So it's not just about housing.
10:26This occupation has organic depth.
10:32As Brazil's city centers become ground zero for the fight against capitalist real estate
10:37speculation, housing rights activists across the country are celebrating the victory of
10:42the residents of Paulo Gianetti.
10:45Nine years of the Vito Gianotti occupation is an important date for all the social movements,
10:51mainly because it's been nine years during which we've managed to achieve the regularization
10:55of the property.
10:56We are about to enter the phase of reforms which will guarantee dignified housing ownership
11:00for the 28 families living here.
11:03It's not just important for Rio de Janeiro.
11:05We are celebrating it nationally.
11:09Residents of the occupation are currently negotiating with a construction company to
11:12conduct the government-funded reforms.
11:15Brian Meir, TELUSUR, Rio de Janeiro.
11:31In Paraguay, several fires have been raging for weeks.
11:35The last few hours of fire in Asuncion, the country's capital, consumed more than 40
11:40hectares.
11:41Hundreds of families have been evacuated from houses near the Paraguay River in the Bahia
11:45Blanca area.
11:46There, the flames are advancing dangerously from a fire that, according to local authorities,
11:51has three sources of ignition.
11:53The fire, besides forcing the evacuation and affecting several firefighters, has spread
11:57to the ecological reserve Banco San Miguel due to the high temperatures and the change
12:02in the wind direction.
12:03Authorities have confirmed that at least two people have been arrested for the incident,
12:08confirming also that it was intentionally provoked.
12:12Meanwhile, in Uruguay, social, environmental and academic organizations reject the privatization
12:19of water for the supply of water in the metropolitan region of the nation's capital, Montevideo.
12:25More than 150 groups signed a letter addressed to President Luis Lacayo Poe and the Minister
12:30of the Environment, Robert Bouvier, requesting that the signing of the contract for the Arrasati
12:36project be halted.
12:38In the letter, the organizations expressed their concern about the environmental impact,
12:42human rights and the legality of the project.
12:45They also point out that the investment of some $900 million for the execution of the
12:50project will generate a significant debt for the next 20 years.

13:20South Korea's President Jun Suk-kyo became the country's first sitting president to be
13:24formally arrested after a court issue of warrants Sunday to detain him for an extended
13:29period over his botched martial law bid last month.
13:33The court approved the arrest warrant, citing sufficient proof for the charges and the risk
13:37of evidence tampering.
13:39The decision means that investigators can keep Jun in custody for up to 20 days, including
13:44the days he has already spent at a detention center following his apprehension at his residence
13:50in Seoul on Wednesday.
13:52The ruling led to violent protests by hundreds of angry supporters who stormed the court
13:56building's smashed windows and broke in with riot police trying to keep them at bay.
14:03Malaysia hosts the Association of Southeast Asian Nations Foreign Ministers' meeting to
14:10set the agenda for the year 2025.
14:12Under the motto, Inclusion and Sustainability, the foreign ministers seek to strengthen relations
14:17between the member countries in order to guarantee stability and security of the region.
14:22Therefore, territorial disputes have priority in the points to be discussed during the meeting
14:27on the 1st of the year.
14:29In this regard, Malaysia proposes to promote permanent dialogue in search of a peaceful
14:34solution to the conflict in Myanmar, in addition to accelerating the approval of a Code of
14:38Conduct regarding the South China Sea.
14:42On the South China Sea, we touched base on the retreat welcome, the progress of the negotiations
14:50of the Code of Conduct in the South China Sea, and highlighted the need to continue
14:55the momentum to expedite the Code of Conduct in the South China Sea negotiations towards
15:01an early conclusion and effective and substantive COC in accordance with the UNCLOS 1982.
15:13During a press conference, the foreign ministers of Malaysia assured that they expect a dialogue,
15:18a peaceful dialogue with Myanmar to guarantee stability and the installation of a democratic
15:23government.
15:24No intention to carve out Myanmar.
15:28In fact, we are looking forward for a peaceful dialogue with Myanmar and also the stakeholders
15:33in Myanmar.
15:34And we are trying our very best to put our head together, together with the dialogues
15:38partners and also country neighboring Myanmar, how best that we can ensure that stability
15:48and also a democratic government being installed in Myanmar.
15:58In Russia, the Nutcracker has become a winter cultural phenomenon, standing out among Christmas
16:08and New Year traditions thanks to its music and plot.
16:11From Moscow, our correspondent Oleg Yasinsky with the details.
16:18The ballet Nutcracker, with music by the great Russian composer Pyotr Tchaikovsky, has become
16:24one of the most important and traditional symbols of the New Year season in Russia.
16:28It is also a clear example of the symbiosis of Russian and universal culture, as the plot
16:32of Hoffman's fairy tale The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, the script of the ballet by
16:36Mariusz Petipa and the music of Tchaikovsky are united in one great work.
16:47We all dream of something.
16:48This ballet work is like dreaming of the beautiful, well, maybe a prince, maybe something else.
16:54This is what we dream of when being at home, it suddenly comes to life in front of us.
17:05We made great efforts over the past year to bring the riches of Russian opera and ballet
17:09classics back to the stage, both on the main stage and on the new stage.
17:21The Nutcracker premiered in December 1892 at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg.
17:26Its story has also unfolded at other famous theatres such as the Bolshoi in Moscow.
17:30There, several productions have been presented, each with its own unique interpretation, to
17:35become famous not only in Russia but all over the world.
17:43To begin with, the most wonderful thing is that it is an encounter with childhood, whether
17:47we like it or not.
17:48Anyway, when we were children, our mother once took us to a puppet theatre, a dramatic
17:52theatre or a ballet theatre, and we saw The Nutcracker somehow, or someone gave us a book,
17:56and also, of course, the music of Tchaikovsky.
17:58I am absolutely sure of this and nothing, and no one will ever be able to cancel out
18:02this wonderful music.
18:05Tchaikovsky's beautiful, bright and melodic music, the children's dance, the waltz, the
18:13adagio, as well as the traditional New Year atmosphere, are for the Russian spectator
18:17the hope of a miracle, a magical transformation, a renewal for the future.
18:26The ballet The Nutcracker is the most beautiful and magical thing that can happen to you before
18:30the New Year.
18:31And, of course, the production of Grigorevich, our outstanding choreographer, is amazing,
18:36fascinating every moment.
18:39The music is great, the experience is great.
18:45Vino Gradova and Ovcharenko danced.
18:47They are so beautiful and danced so well.
18:50I like ballet very much, every time I see it, I enjoy it to the fullest.
19:00Modern adaptations for children often include simplified plots with interactive elements.
19:05Some theatres offer special explanatory or educational programs before the show so the
19:10children can learn more about ballet, music and history.
19:14After all, the main thing is to create an atmosphere of magic and inspiration that children
19:19will remember for years to come.
19:21Like this, we have come to the end of this newsbrief.
