00:03Hi, I'm technology and TV writer Matt Morne-Hickson
00:06and today we're going to be taking a bit of a deep dive
00:09through the history of the game show The Traitors
00:12which has become quite the worldwide phenomenon in the 2020s.
00:16So, The Traitors first started out in the Netherlands, Holland
00:20and that premiered in 2021, that was the first version of the show
00:24and it's quickly become a massive, massive franchise around the globe
00:29for those who aren't as familiar with the show
00:32basically it splits a group of contestants who are competing to win money
00:37into traitors or faithful.
00:40It's a bit like Secret Werewolf, Secret Mafia, Secret Hitler
00:44all those games that you might have played over the years
00:47it's a bit like that but with, you know, played on the TV
00:50with challenges and all sorts of fun stuff
00:53but yeah, so the traitors have to go around and murder the faithfuls
00:58try and avoid being banished and survive to the end and win
01:02the faithfuls have to try and uncover the traitors
01:05and, yeah, if they don't then they don't win the money at the end of the show.
01:10The UK version premiered in December 2022
01:14it was around Christmas time, you know, the reluctant Christmas
01:17and then after that for seasons 2 and 3 it's moved to a January slot
01:22so the second season was January 2024, so last year
01:25and then the third season was January 2025
01:29this year it's just ongoing currently
01:32the US version is a bit different than the UK version
01:35they have a mix, well, the first season of that
01:39which is also filmed at the same place, Arbroath Castle in Scotland
01:44near Inverness, it's filmed at the same place
01:48and it has Alan Cumming, a mix of celebs
01:52it has a mix of one, it has a mix of celebs and non-celebs
01:57at least the first season had celebrities and non-celebs
02:00since then it's just been celebrities going forward
02:03the first season of the US had a bit of a problem
02:06because the celebs know how to play the reality game
02:09and the normal people are not as familiar
02:11so a bit of an unfair balance
02:13so I think having it either be all non-celebs or all celebs
02:18is probably the way to go forward
02:20Ireland, as mentioned, are having a show
02:23their own version coming later this year
02:26it will be hosted by the actress who plays Sister Michael in Derry Girls
02:31will be the host of that
02:33don't know about the details of when it will air yet
02:37it's still unconfirmed
02:39there's also a celebrity version of the UK one coming
02:43this year, 2025
02:45we'll obviously get more on that as it comes out
02:48the UK version is on BBC
02:51it's on BBC iPlayer and it airs on BBC Terrestrial TV
02:55BBC have also acquired rights for other versions of the Traitors
03:00so there's both seasons of Traitors Australia
03:03which has been sadly cancelled
03:05there's Traitors New Zealand they added recently
03:07I believe they've got the rights for Traitors Ireland
03:10when that comes out but that's TBC when that comes
03:16and also the Traitors US
03:19that usually comes after it's finished in America
03:22so I expect that later in 2025
